Kurakil They are like 2 separate games. The ship game and the walking game. They don't really affect each other very much. :/

In an ideal world based on what's been implemented so far this 'should' be true, but it isn't. ED:O is a significant performance and exploration aesthetics loss, and the presence of settlements completely changes BGS gameplay for those involved in it.

The simulation can be affected of course, but I mean nothing you do on foot interacts with things you do on ships and vice-versa, as far as gameplay is concerned. Or at least not that I am aware of. I am curious why they "needed" to "upgrade" the game engine. Was there something specific that the Horizons variant could not do?

That's horrifying and I love it.

AFAIK their justification was that on foot terrain detail in EDH was not good enough for the experience Braben wanted us to have. The new planet generation engine is all about making on foot 'feel right', but the cost was absolutely not worth it imo.

So... prioritizing graphics over gameplay and performance. *Sigh* [Insert rant here.] Seems most developers are sliding down this slope.

You can thank the players for that. Look at the Elite Reddit. Every 2 weeks there's yet another inane post with a purty picture containing some random assortment of skybox, planetary bodies and sky shader typically titled "This game is amaz0rs beautificalz!" but completely glosses over the 1000 hours of grind gameplay needed to get to that point, or the finicky camera trying to take that picture, or the 10 FPS they were getting at the time, or the glitchy shadows/flickering textures popping in that a still won't show.

FDev are yet to gather the fruits of their marketing stunt and questionable development practices. They blame the pandemics for their failure but actually the pandemic is what saved them somehow. A lot of people accepted this way better just because of lockdowns than it would be received if delivered before 2020.

I'm actually quite satisfied with Odyssey now, since update 11. I even upgraded my alt account recently when the DLC was on sale.

It is better than it was a year ago, no argument on that. But then I have a question for you: Is it better than Horizons?

It certainly looks like a downgrade for me. Which is odd - you do not bring new stuff in a game with a downgrade

You unlocked Mercenary Elite, so the DLC did bring in new stuff for you, no?

I still rarely do on-foot missions, but I like having the option to do them. They add more variety to the game. I haven't touched Horizons since I cleared my save.

There is always room for improvement, but many of the issues with the renderer have been addressed. I didn't like how Odyssey messed up my Horizons avatar, but I solved that problem by making a new one from scratch in Odyssey. I know it's weird, but I have more fun taking pics of avatars than taking pics of planets, so I don't care much about the pros and cons of the new planet tech.

I got a courier mission sent to me over comms. Hadn't done courier work in a long time. Had to figure out how to approach low fsd wake and drop out of supercruise without the aid of supercruise assist. Took a few tries. Can be fun relearning stuff.

My mercenary rank is not representative. I have it thanks to my 400 arx collection weekly (fastest way is ground high CZ). I also played it exclusively but I fire Horizons each few months and I am stunned of how much we lost. Yes, we got some new textures and on-foot content but the cost seems unjustified for me.

The performance is most obvious downgrade but what made the game unappealing for me is its general visuals. The overall contrast of pitch black with overblown light sources is killing my eyes. Light passing trough solid mass, bonked shadows and the constant bugs is just adding more to that feeling of general downgrade. I do not even want to get started with horrible new UI but in the recent events of dropping console developmet it makes even less sense to me.

... Added more stuff that have nothing to do with spaceships and in a way made the old stuff harder to play and enjoy.
I guess it is fine if you like it as screenshot engine but I am not that guy ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
