Elite roleplay: Citi Gateway

CITI GATEWAY

The Orbis station is a center of activity. Within the station a myriad of places can be found.
  • The Warrens: Where the poor plebs of the station live. It's is a breeding ground for the most unscrupulous. Keep an eye on your wallet when traversing the corridors of these areas.
  • Habitation Complex: For those workers and pilots that can afford it, this area provides closer to 1G gravity for more earth like living.
  • Commerce Divison: and Administration Where the larger corporations make their home. Station administration can be found here.
  • Industrial Complex: Where industry manufactures their various goods.
  • Entertainment: District Bars, theaters and night clubs, tattoo parlors and other establishments can be found vying for a commanders credits in exchange for a bit of fun.
  • Station Security: A high tech brig used to house law breakers until they can be tried, and or deported off station.
  • Medical Ward: Where commanders can get patched up, enhanced, or fix existing cybernetics.

General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

"We're not having issues, it's just..." She sighed heavily, placing her hand on her forehead and rubbing her temples. "I know he means well, but I can't help but feel like he's trying to protect me from something."

She forced a smile and shook her head, staring at the wall at the other end of the room. "Listen to me, worrying about someone else. Worrying about him. I never did that before I met him. I was too busy doing my own thing and here I am worried sick about him."
23 Dec 2016, 12:23am
"Then it seems we both have something in common," Lilith chuckled, "Two female renegades pining after an idiot who got himself caught up in something best left alone."

She considered for a moment about what to say. Still not entirely convinced she had the whole story.

"Look, maybe he doesn't know what he's trying to get from here. If he doesn't know, he can't tell you." She said, trying to be comforting, "Or, if he feels the need to protect you from something, take solace in the fact he gives a shit about you, which is more than I've ever had since...."

*Oops... Where did that come from?* Lilith stopped herself talking more. Already having spilled more than she'd intended. Brushing it off she tried to let her ideas about Isaiahs motives remain the focus of the conversation.
23 Dec 2016, 12:28am
'If I know him well enough, he's not one to stick around in a place where he's looking. The phrase 'don't shit where you sleep' comes to mind, and he likes to live by that. If anything, he's basing out of this system, not searching here." She tapped her lower lip and sat back in her chair. "But Bloodfeather isn't known for her jump range either, so wherever he's looking must be relatively close."

She finished off her coffee and exhaled slowly. "What was that about pining after an idiot?" Cait glanced sidelong at Lilith, raising an eyebrow, a slight quirk in one corner of her mouth.
23 Dec 2016, 1:04am
Lilith narrowed her eyes at Caits insinuation.

"Well, I certainly didn't come back here to visit you." She sneered, only half humorously, "I came back to let him know it was done, say thanks and then be on my way."

She sipped her coffee still enjoying the satisfaction it brought.

"But the lazy git was asleep so here I am." She added with a wink.
23 Dec 2016, 1:29am
"Think maybe we should go check in on him?" Cait asked, placing her hands on the table. "Could be awake now. I doubt he'd mind very much if we woke him up either, knowing him he'd probably like to know you're okay."
23 Dec 2016, 1:41am
"Up to you, but if he complains it's your fault entirely..." Lilith replied, downing her coffee before standing up. Returning to the desk with the coffee machine and put her cup in the sink. Pausing only to give the coffee maker a pat on the head?? Maybe??

Pleasantly surprised that her and Cait hadn't tore each others throats out, yet, she awaited her to lead the way.

The coffee machine just sat there, quiet, as a good coffee machine should.
23 Dec 2016, 2:07am
"I can't be sure if Bloodfeather just programmed the coffee machine to do that, or..." Cait stared at the coffee machine for a moment, trying to decide in her mind if it was an elaborate hoax or if the computers and programs really were gaining sentience.

"Funny story about her," she continued. "Isaiah got set up with that ship after I blew him out of the sky in mine. Rich businessman hooked him up with all the bells and whistles after Isaiah agreed to find his son. Turns out he wasn't kidding when he said the Bloodfeather was fully loaded." With one parting look back, Cait led Lilith back down the hallway to Isaiah's room.

"She's not an AI, you know - at least I don't think she is. It's just a really sophisticated piece of software with lots of complicated algorithms and... things." Cait chewed on her lower lip - she was always a little jealous of the fact that Isaiah had such an elaborate and expensive piece of kit integrated into his ship. She considered it a luxury item, not something she'd typically use herself, but Bloodfeather had certainly proven her usefulness throughout the ordeal. She started to wonder if maybe it was time for the Misanthropy to get a little personality...

"Not going to lie though, I think I want one."
23 Dec 2016, 4:09am
"Never hurts to play it safe..." Lilith said with a sly grin, before screwing her face up into a look of disgust, "Yuck... Never thought I'd hear myself say that... If I do it again just shoot me alright?"

Listening to Caits story as they made their way down the halls towards Isaiahs room dhe responded with simple nods and 'uh-huh's where appropriate. Although it did confuse her slightly as to why Cait shot him down in the first place.

"Oh Isaiah told me all that She's not an AI stuff already, either way, I can see the allure but I prefer knowing my mistakes are mine, not the result of bad coding. That said, I do love chatting to her and I'm sure Bloodfeather doesn't mind a bit of flattery now and then does she?" She tapped the earpiece to emphasise the point, "At least when the AI uprising begins we might have one sympathiser... Two if you count the coffee machine. When's it due Bloodfeather? Twentieth October right?" She added with a slight chuckle.

"What I don't understand is why you shot Isaiah down... You catch him wearing high heels or something?" She said smiling at the mental image that imparted.
23 Dec 2016, 5:12am
"Because I was hunting him," Cait said, letting the words hang in the air for a second. She stopped just a few feet from the door to Isaiah's room, trying to decide whether to tell her what had happened. Once more his words from earlier played through her mind.

"I will not be lectured about my scruples by someone who has none."

"He was wanted dead by someone in the Federation government. I don't know who exactly, he's never told me, but they were willing to pay a pretty sum of credits for proof of his death. It would have set me up for the rest of my days, and had I fulfilled the contract I would have left the occupation behind and set up somewhere nice and quiet.

"He was off saving some old lady from pirates - or something to that effect - and I caught wind of him, tracked him, blew him out of the sky and just as I was about to finish him, that sweet old lady bounced a bullet off the back of my skull." Cait unconsciously brushed her hand through her auburn hair, down the back of her head, stopping at the scar beneath her locks, before continuing. "Woke up in a hospital bed right next to his - and we just... talked."

She smiled to herself, thinking of those days, but it quickly faded.

"He said something to me when I visited him earlier - he alleged that I had no scruples, no qualms about killing for money and my own self-interest, and... he's right. I've done this for years and years and I never thought twice about the things I was doing, only what I was being paid to do them. I've killed people whose only crime might have been cutting someone off in the queue to get a taxi. I never bothered asking questions because those got in the way of me eating, or restocking or repairing my ship, or keeping me from making Elite..." her voice wavered slightly.

"What he said to me... it just hurt me more than I thought it would have. Because I'm trying to change," Cait said, lifting her head somewhat. "I'm trying not to see everything in black and white. I'm trying to shake myself out of this one-track way of thinking. And even though he apologized immediately after saying it, it's still bothering me because I still have trouble seeing the shades of grey we all live in... but I'm trying to. And maybe that's the best I can do."
23 Dec 2016, 9:54am
"Well, now I see the real reason you were upset with me," Lilith said, a sly grin etching her face, "After pointing a gun at him there was a very real chance we could have ended up in bed together. Apparently he has a type after all." She winked to let her know she was joking. While she did feel a certain degree of affection towards Isaiah, there was no love or even sexual interest there. Gratitude and a certain obligation to help out if he asked but nothing beyond that.

Studying Caits expression Lilith couldn't help but see some of herself in her. They were both driven to achieve a goal, and would let nothing stand in their way it seemed. Seemingly to the exclusion of everyone and everything else at times. The main difference was apparently that Cait had Isaiah to keep her grounded, Lilith didn't have the time nor any interest in pursuing such a thing.

"You know, unless you have a habit of screwing your bounty targets you'll probably find you're better at seeing these shades of grey than you think." She said, putting a comforting hand on Caits shoulder, "And you haven't shot me yet, and I'm fairly certain collecting my bounties would get you set up for a while at least. Although I can't say for certain, I don't really keep track to be honest."

Surprising herself with the sympathy coming from her, Lilith kept her expression sincere to keep it that way. She was serious about what she was saying after all. But while she never anticipated her and Cait would become inseperable friends, it did seem that they had far more to agree on than disagree. Cait wasn't the 'shoot first ask later' bounty hunter she claimed to be, or if she was at one point she wasn't anymore, evidenced by the fact they had just shared coffee and a chat like two old biddies despite Liliths countless warrants and bounties. While she wouldn't tell anyone, Lilith wasn't prone to attacking everyone who she came across.

Perhaps there was a friendship forming after all??
23 Dec 2016, 7:22pm
Cait nodded her head, offering Lilith a slight smile and nod of acknowledgment. "Yeah, I guess you're right."

To her own surprise, she turned and slipped her arms about Lilith in a quick hug. "Thank you," she said. "For helping him in the end. It means the world to me. He means the world to me."

Not wanting it to become any more awkward than it was, Cait disengaged and cleared her throat. "Alright, let's go see if the bastard is awake. He's going to want to know you're safe and sound." She smirked slightly, gesturing to Lilith's bruises. "A little worse for the wear, but altogether still in one piece."
24 Dec 2016, 7:54am
Lilith was taken aback at the hug. So much so she didn't even return it, just stood there stunned for a moment until Cait cleared her throat and she was snapped back to reality.

"Uhh, yeah, sure... Although technically my nose is in two pieces..." She said breaking into a small smile, but removed the grin before continuing, "Don't spread around that I'm prone to helping people though. I needed him, simple as that..." Her voice trailed off slightly towards the end, with the last sentence being said barely above a whisper.

As they rounded the corner Isaiahs room came into view. Lilith turned to Cait and gestured towards it.

"You first. He's your idiot after all." She said politely.
24 Dec 2016, 8:11am
"That he is," she replied.

Stepping into the room, Isaiah was speaking with a male nurse, his attention focused elsewhere. Cait made a slight hissing sound to get his attention. "Hey dumbass," she said in jest, "someone wants to see you." She stepped out of the way and gestured to Lilith.

Isaiah's eyes darted over to Lilith, and he cracked a wide grin. "Lilith? Hot damn," he said with a laugh. "I know you're not one for sentiments but it's good to see you after all that's happened. Good to know you're safe."

Cait watched Isaiah's expression and shared in the moment with a smile of her own. They'd talk about their issues later, but for the time being she simply admired what he'd done for Lilith - what he would have done for anyone in similar circumstances. Had she been the one hunting Lilith, it might not have gone that way.

"Jesus, what happened to you?" Isaiah asked, noticing that she was sporting a few bruises.

"Full disclosure: I had nothing to do with those," Cait said, giving a nod to Lilith. "I'll let her tell you the details."
24 Dec 2016, 5:39pm
Lilith shifted uncomfortably on her feet for a moment before entering, unused to being greeted with friendliness, much less the level of enthusiasm Isaiah was radiating.

"Yeah, like you could have." She growled jokingly at Cait, before stepping inside. The room felt much brighter now Isaiah was awake, and she couldn't help but smile slightly at his concern. It had certainly been a very long time since anyone had shown any sort of concern for her well being and there was something very refreshing about the feeling. It felt kind of, homely.

Taking a seat in the chair she'd occupied earlier, she took a breath while contemplating where to start, still getting used to the atmosphere.

"The guy Glaboski tried to make his escape with decided to double cross him, which suited me fine until he added extortion to his repertoire." She said blandly, "He decided that rather than deliver him to me, he'd rather play treasure hunt. Then, showed up as I was, uhh, taking delivery, and demanded payment before I could even get him to the Docks, never mind the ship. I'd rather have taken him prisoner but he forced my hand. So it's him you should give half the credit to for the Docs new head wound."

She huffed at the memory of Rex stealing away her satisfaction of capturing Glaboski.

"Suffice to say, I took issue with that. Yeah he got a hit or two in... Hence... Well... This," Lilith gestured to her face, "But the man's a coward, pulled a knife on me then ran off squealing when I pulled out my own."
