Elite roleplay: Citi Gateway

CITI GATEWAY

The Orbis station is a center of activity. Within the station a myriad of places can be found.
  • The Warrens: Where the poor plebs of the station live. It's is a breeding ground for the most unscrupulous. Keep an eye on your wallet when traversing the corridors of these areas.
  • Habitation Complex: For those workers and pilots that can afford it, this area provides closer to 1G gravity for more earth like living.
  • Commerce Divison: and Administration Where the larger corporations make their home. Station administration can be found here.
  • Industrial Complex: Where industry manufactures their various goods.
  • Entertainment: District Bars, theaters and night clubs, tattoo parlors and other establishments can be found vying for a commanders credits in exchange for a bit of fun.
  • Station Security: A high tech brig used to house law breakers until they can be tried, and or deported off station.
  • Medical Ward: Where commanders can get patched up, enhanced, or fix existing cybernetics.

General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

"I'm coming to that," Lova responds. "At first our progress was slow. Funding was minimal due to the highly theoretical nature of what we were trying to achieve. But then the project attracted the attention of the Imperial Navy. They had recognised a military application for our work. Rather than transport hundreds of cargo canisters in a Sidewinder, we were directed to using our technique for the covert transportation of an entire fleet of ships instead. Funding was suddenly made available from the very highest levels of the Empire, and we found ourselves shrouded in secrecy. We even had a visit from Denton Patreus himself, anxious to ensure his credits were being well spent."

Lova cautiously glances around the room, then shrugs.

"Three months ago we reached the first practical testing stage for our process. But, to cut a long story short, it didn't work. It could never work. Our calculations had contained a tiny yet insurmountable flaw within the mass conservation matrix. Nothing we tried was able to solve the problem, and so fifteen years of research had failed in an instant. And I... I had wasted four years of my life."
22 Oct 2018, 8:39pm
Isaiah nodded, looking down at his hands for several long moments. He wasn't sure what to say to her -- there was nothing to say, really. He could imagine the despair she must have felt and the desperation that followed.

"I'm sorry," he said quietly, looking back up at her. "I'm sorry that it went that way. I can't imagine how you must have felt. How you must feel."

He leaned back and ran a hand through his hair, sighing to himself. "I'm actually very sorry that I was only thinking about... you know. But I'm grateful that you spoke up. Even more so that you've told me this." He offered her a small smile. "You're a remarkable woman, Lova."

He furrowed his brow in thought for a moment. "What can I do for you this evening? What can I do to help?"
22 Oct 2018, 9:16pm
"But I still haven't yet answered your question. Why did I, a brilliant quantum physicist, end up working as a whore in a brothel? And," she adds with a wry smile, "clearly not a very good whore at that."

Lova leans forward and taps the table menu for another round of drinks. She sits back and takes a breath.

"When Patreus learned of our failure he acted swiftly. All our funding was immediately withdrawn. The entire operation was shut down. Our equipment and research notes were confiscated, and we were all out of a job. But worse was to come. Infuriated by our failure, the Imperial powers-that-be saw to it that none of us would ever work in our chosen profession again. We were totally discredited in all the scientific circles, and our licences were revoked without recourse to appeal."

The drinks arrive, and Lova picks up her fresh vodka cocktail.

"My lifelong passion had been cruelly snatched away from me, and I didn't know what to do with myself. Then one day I woke up and realised something that had never occurred to me before. I had been so focused on my work for all those years, I'd never once made room for love or sex. Can you imagine that? Twenty-six years old, and still a virgin."
22 Oct 2018, 9:28pm
Isaiah's brow furrowed intensely as she recounted her ordeal, his hands curling into loose fists. It was a story he'd heard before, though not for the reasons Lova mentioned. But his eyes widened when she mentioned the reason for her seeking work in a brothel.

"That's not something to be ashamed of," he said, shifting slightly. "I wasn't much older myself, although my wife was my first." He smirked a little, though it fades slightly as he remembered Natalia, and how much he craved her touch after all these years.

His mind turned back to Lova, and he gathered his composure. "Could I offer you a little advice? Don't lose it here. Don't... don't give it away. Don't let some man interested in sexual conquest be the one to take that gift from you." He made a sweeping motion to the rest of the room. "I'm all for empowerment and choice and the like, but... there's only one first time. And frankly you deserve far better than what you're putting yourself up for." He winced slightly, knowing he was speaking as much about himself as he was his male counterparts.

"Be picky about who you take to bed for the first time if you can."
22 Oct 2018, 10:11pm
"You're very sweet," says Lova. She picks up her drink and takes a sip.

"Once I started thinking about it, all I wanted was for some man - any man - to take me in his arms and... well, you know what I mean. I suppose I fantasised about it. I wanted to find out what I'd been missing out on for all those years, but I hadn't the slightest idea of how to go about attracting a man. I didn't really even think a man would be attracted to me anyway."

A smile plays on Lova's lips.

"Have you ever watched 'Gourmet's Guide To The Galaxy'?"

Despite having only moments earlier entertained the prospect of bedding Lova, Isaiah found himself somehow shy at her mentioning her own fantasy. When she mentioned Gourmet's Guide to the Galaxy, he nodded. "I've seen it once or twice. Usually in passing. Why do you ask?"
23 Oct 2018, 8:41am
"The Olive Grove was featured in one of the first episodes," Lova explains. "I caught it on a repeat."

She takes another sip of her drink, then puts down her glass and sits back, crossing her legs.

"Having been deprived of my life's work, I found myself in the unusual position of having nothing to do. I had no confidence to go out and actually meet people, and I've found that men generally feel uncomfortable with a woman who is smarter than them."

She gives Isaiah an apologetic smile.

"So," she continues, "I stayed at home and started watching holovision instead. Old movies, soaps, really shows, anything to stave off my boredom. Then I saw this place on 'Gourmet's Guide', and it stirred an intense curiosity inside me. I did some research on prostitution, and came to the conclusion that if I couldn't function in social situations as myself, perhaps I could do it pretending to be someone else. Plus, I needed the money. And so I came here and asked for an interview."

Isaiah gave a nod of his head in understanding, taking a sip from his glass and finishing it off. "If I may be so bold, an intelligent woman is one of the sexiest kinds there are," he said, grinning. "Quite frankly I'm more attracted to you now, knowing your background and the wealth of knowledge you have, than I was when you first approached me. But I share the same sentiments. I've found it difficult to meet people outside of my profession. Struggled to connect with people because they either feel intimidated by me for what I do, or what I've done..."

His voice trailed off.
23 Oct 2018, 11:54am
Lova allows the silence to hang for a few moments, then laughs softly.

"Well, aren't we a pair! So serious and glum, in a house of pleasure! We must do something to remedy that at once."

She drinks the rest of her cocktail in one go, and eats the cherry. Then, placing the glass back on the table, she stands up. Smoothing her dress, Lova looks down at Isaiah and gives him a warm smile.

"Hej. My name is Linnea Gudjonnson."

She extends her hand in greeting.

"Doctor Linnea Gudjonnson."
23 Oct 2018, 12:04pm
Isaiah rose from his seat and grasped her hand gently, giving it a firm shake. "Hello Doctor Gudjonnson. I'm Commander Isaiah Evanson. It's a pleasure to meet you." He returned her smile with a broad, genuine one of his own.
23 Oct 2018, 2:54pm
"Likewise."

Lova remains standing.

"Listen, thank you for the compliment. About my intelligence, I mean. I really appreciate it. But," she adds, with a sardonic tilt of her head, "I think I'd better go back to being the fawning bimbo for my next client. From what the other girls tell me, not all the men who come here are quite as enlightened as you. And besides, I quite enjoy the play acting. It takes my mind off quantum physics."
23 Oct 2018, 3:06pm
"If you insist," he said, nodding his head. "It wasn't quite how I imagined my evening would go, but I enjoyed it all the same."

He spent a few extra moments taking in the sight of her, her blue eyes and the way her hair framed her face. Part of him felt a pang of regret that it wouldn't be him that spent the night with her, but he knew she was far more than what she might have presented herself as.

He hated the idea of leaving so soon.

"I'm uh... I'm probably going to get a drink or two before I wander out," he said thoughtfully. "Mull over what we were discussing earlier." He inhaled deeply and smiled. "You've given me a lot to think about."
23 Oct 2018, 3:50pm
Lova smiles. She looks down at her shoes, and then back up to Isaiah.

"I've been doing some mulling of my own. About the advice you gave me earlier. You advised me to not lose my virginity here. I'm sorry, but I will soon have to ignore that advice."

She moves closer to Isaiah.

"You also told me to be picky about who I take to bed for the first time. In that case, call me picky. Room number five. I'll be waiting."

Lova turns away, strolls across the bar and out through the door which leads to the bedrooms...
23 Oct 2018, 4:29pm
Isaiah was more than a little shocked at her proposition. Admittedly he did have every intention of going to bed with her earlier, but that was before he got to know her.

He turned back to his glass and drew the last sip of rum from it, and turned the glass over and over in his hands. Knowing her gave him pause. But she'd made the choice, and it was him. And in a way, he felt rather privileged to know he'd be her first. He resolved in his mind to take it slow, respectfully, and make sure she was comfortable with what they did together.

He drew in a deep breath to steady his nerves, then grinned slightly to himself. He set the glass down and straightened his collar, and after a few moments, he followed Lova's lead by crossing the bar and heading towards the bedrooms...

OOC Note from Lova and Isaiah.

It's a rule of The Olive Grove that what happens in the bedroom stays in the bedroom. So, in the interest of good taste, this is where our story ends.

To those of you who have been following this RP, we thank you and hope you enjoyed it.
