Elite roleplay: Citi Gateway

CITI GATEWAY

The Orbis station is a center of activity. Within the station a myriad of places can be found.
  • The Warrens: Where the poor plebs of the station live. It's is a breeding ground for the most unscrupulous. Keep an eye on your wallet when traversing the corridors of these areas.
  • Habitation Complex: For those workers and pilots that can afford it, this area provides closer to 1G gravity for more earth like living.
  • Commerce Divison: and Administration Where the larger corporations make their home. Station administration can be found here.
  • Industrial Complex: Where industry manufactures their various goods.
  • Entertainment: District Bars, theaters and night clubs, tattoo parlors and other establishments can be found vying for a commanders credits in exchange for a bit of fun.
  • Station Security: A high tech brig used to house law breakers until they can be tried, and or deported off station.
  • Medical Ward: Where commanders can get patched up, enhanced, or fix existing cybernetics.

General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

"Yeah, that's the thing though. I ain't going there to tell stories or make converts. I'm there to lay low. Be someone else for a while. Not draw attention."

John leans forward, his lips in a mocking pout.

"You're no fun, you know that?"

"You should see me at parties, I'll take the fun out of an Imperial orgy faster than a bad seal on an airlock," Isaiah said with a laugh, taking one last drag of his cigarette before putting it out in the ashtray.

Growing serious again, he shrugged. "This ain't the end, you know."
06 May 2020, 12:43am
John smiled warmly.

"No. It's another beginning."
06 May 2020, 12:49am
Isaiah nodded. He was quiet for a few more lingering moments, then sighed with exertion as he stood up.

"Never was good with goodbyes, but.." he extended a hand to John. "You watch your back out there."
06 May 2020, 1:00am
John stood up, put out his cigarette on the table, and took Isaiah's hand.

"You too. But remember, you whistle? I'll come running."
06 May 2020, 1:31am
"Likewise," he said. "When the time comes, brother. When the time comes."
14 May 2020, 12:59am
Kammus quickly flew down the stairs, his thick cape flowing behind. Off the ship, he walked quickly to the nearest transport terminal, and selected passage to the Habitation complex.

Once arrived, he found the nearest decently dressed person who look like they worked at the facility.

"Excuse me. Lord Thaxted. I am in need of a suite while the ore is unloaded from my ship. Would you be so kind?"

He tried to codeswitch into a more neutral universal dialect.

[continued from https://inara.cz/board/3483/328521/#328521 & now in Station Administrator's office]

He was torn between feeling exasperated with yet another complication in his already too-busy daily schedule, & his boredom with his usual routine leaving him starved for anything which might rescue him from it.

He re-read the summary from his datapad of the development yesterday in the morgue. He thought, Well, this certainly qualifies! A frozen corpse found in an ancient life pod, suddenly coming back to life; & if that wasn't novel enough, speaking in some unknown language! He punched in the comms code... what was it again? Oh... there it was... & the last 3 digits entered with extra force.

"Morgue. Admin. I need to see you in my office right away." The face on the screen was half-covered in sterile medical garb, but her mouth moved with her reply. "Right away, Sir. A moment while I deconn." He nodded curtly, & then disconnected & leaned back in his chair. Despite it moving to conform to his body, his back ached, & his ass was sore from sitting. He thought, I really do need to get out more... & he considered the advantages of moving his office farther towards the core with its reduced 'gravity'.

Presently, his door chimed & he tapped the 'entry' key on his desk, & the medical practician strode in, the paleness of her face only surpassed by her hair, disheveled & nearly perfectly white from the frequent trips through the deconn chamber.

"So. Tell me, what's all this here?" He waved to this datapad. "Something more than what I've got here."

She drew a deep breath, then replied in her usual cool, professional clinical manner. "Apparently, some pilot managed to pick up what he thought was salvage, an ancient life pod. The design & form was unknown, nothing like what we use today, so he assumed that it was either damaged or at least, so old, that if it had anything inside, it would only be a frozen corpse." She paused for breath, then continued. "The dockmaster called Medical & they sent down a couple of orderlies, managed to get the pod open, & pulled the body out, & placed it in a bodybag, & brought it to me for examination & identification, so the next of kin could be determined & notified if possible, you know, the usual routine. We get them from time to time..." Her voice trailed off & she glanced down, averting her gaze.

He paused briefly out of the tradition of respect for those lost in The Black, then continued, spurring her on. "But, then things took an unusual turn...?"

"Yes," she replied, & drew in another deep breath. He could sense her distress, & stood up. "Would you like anything? Coffee? Tea? Something other than stims, perhaps...?" He gave a friendly chuckle.

Her face brightened with the thought. "Yes, yes I would, thank you. Something with caffeine, strong. It's been quite a day." He stepped over to his personal chef off to the side & tapped the keys selecting something special. Within moments, the exotic aroma began filling the room. He brought 2 large steaming Hutton mugs & placed 1 on his desk & handed the 2nd to her, which she welcomed with both hands, noticeably glancing at the rare mug. She inhaled the aroma & then sipped.

"Oooh! Void Extract coffee! In a Hutton Mug, no less!" She took a deeper draught, then continued. "So. What's the occasion?" She braced herself, expecting something significant.

"I have a special project for you. Are you as bored with your usual routine as I?" Looking over the top of his own mug, his eyes focused on her studiously, scrutinizing every subtlety in her expression. He wasn't the head Admin of the staton without good reason.

Last year controversial media figure Kara Walden was in the middle of her rebooted Piracy adventure series The Galaxies Greatest Jewel Thief when production ceased mid series.
Insiders suggested legal wranglings and some reports of fatalities amongst cast and crew but in a candid Galnet interview Kara has revealed she suffered a debilitating bout of Depression and was unable to continue with the series.

During the exclusive interview she insisted she intends to complete the series but doubts remain as to the viability of the project. In a controversial move she also repeated the claim that she is in fact a cloned advanced human and was part of a top secret Imperial military programme dating from the reign of Tresken Duvall the third. She went on to claim that she has even more startling reveleations about the Duvalls which will be revealed in future episodes of her show.

Critics of Walden, and there are many, dismissed her claims as the ravings of a lunatic and labelled her attempts to soil the Imperial dignity of the Duvalls with sensationalist claims as cynical attempts to revive her flagging career.

Whatever the truth it seems she will always remain a controversial figure and her continuing association with Nova Imperium may yet bring some further secrets to light.

She sighed deeply over her mug of hot caffeine, considering carefully her reply, & returned her gaze to meet his.

"Sir, it's not at all that I'm ungrateful for the position. I mean, I certainly keep busy, & I'm needed, between the various conditions & situations with & between the occupants of the station that bring them to me, but..." She drew a deep breath, swallowed another sip, & let it out before continuing. "Actually, Sir, I need more staff. Between running Forensics & Morgue, I'm kept busy non-stop. I hardly have time to sit & enjoy something like this" -she raised her mug- "before I have to return to my duties." She paused & tilted her head slightly. "What exactly do you have in mind?" She could feel the effects of the high-strength caffeine sharpening her focus as it infused into her body.

He listened closely & nodded faintly, acknowledging her points. When she finished, it was his turn to take a deep breath before responding.

"I'm head of Admin here on this station." He paused for effect, then sighed, "On this independent station in a relative backwater area, having to try to manage & subsist on whatever traffic & commerce might chance to come our way. Which isn't much." He took a breath & a gulp of his own coffee before continuing.

"Now..." He stood up & waved his free hand for emphasis between each point "...if we just happened to have found... perhaps one of the most significant living ties to our past since the discovery of the Golconda... just what do you think that would do for this station...? And, by extension, of course..." He spun around to focus on her, "all those directly involved with that discovery? Our discovery?" He finished by raising both his free hand & the one holding his own mug, inadvertently slopping out a tiny bit of the cherished delicacy with the exuberance of his gesture. He finished his rhetorical question. "Why, it would bring attention, fame, commerce, & fortune to us, that's what!"

She took his little speech in, eyes & ears open, & her eyes brightened as she saw an opening to connect with her original point. "Uhm... I suppose that would mean a raise...? Or maybe even a staff person...?" she asked tentatively.

He almost laughed, pointing his finger at her & grinning. Her heart sank.

His eyebrows arched up his forehead & he grinned as he said, "A raise, assuredly, & how about two staff?"

Amazed, she decided that whatever it was that got him into this good mood, she'd press her luck. "Experienced staff, not interns?"

He nodded agreement. "Not interns".

With a flash of insight, aided no doubt by the mugful of Void Extract coffee, she caught herself abruptly. "Wait." She looked at him with her eyes slightly narrowed with suspicion. "What will I have to do in exchange?"

He turned back to his chair & sat down, leaning forward across his desk to her. "Here's my plan. You're the very 1st person she's seen & had any interaction with after she regained consciousness, correct?" She nodded & he continued, "Okay. & from reading here..." he reached to touch his datapad in reference, "she's currently under light sedation in ICU, correct?" Again she nodded & he continued. "What we need her to do is to signify in some way, her wish to stay here, during & after her medical recovery, & for her recuperation & rehabilitation afterward."

She began to shake her head slowly as he explained. "But, Sir, that's completely outside my field of training & experience. She's going to need a string of specialists..." her voice trailed off.

Now it was his turn to shake his head & more forcefully. "Nonono... you think of what'll happen... we'll have our momentary flash of fame & glory, then just as quickly, we'll all vanish as the eyes of the media follow to wherever she's whisked away. We'll be but a speck, a blip, barely a footnote. Now, If you had your staff to help relieve your schedule, you'd have this... Miss, I assume... what's her name? Wylder?" He glanced at his datapad, "Synthya Wylder? You'd be able to gain her confidence & oversee the basic steps as we gradually acclimate her & to this station, & being an 'unknown', she's 'off the grid' as it were... after all, she's listed as "Presumed dead, body unrecovered", especially after all this time..." His voice trailed off momentarily, his shrewd mind working in overdrive with all the potential aspects developing in his mind.

He snapped back into focus. "Because, if we don't," he now appealed to the Practician's humanitarian side, "You know what all the major factions will do to her. They'll tear her apart, each vying for whatever benefit they can get from her. Between that & her culture shock, I fear for her sanity, even her life, certainly her happiness, if she became a pawn for whatever unscrupulous powerplay & zealot may lie in wait." He nodded solemnly.

"We must keep all this on the down-low, at least, until she can come to the point of making the decision which will benefit us all." Besides, he thought, if it was discovered that Miss Wylder might be heir to some great fortune, why it wouldn't be unreasonable at all if she decided in sharing it, now would it? His eyes twinkled.

She drew in a deep breath, then another, & finished her coffee. "Very well. I agree with your points. I'll do it. BUT, we'll need to carefully scout for the required specialists. Neither of us here have all that's needed." She thought to herself with feelings mixed evenly between excitement & trepidation. So much could go wrong here, & then she felt a wave of sympathy for her 'patient'. The words came to her out of some vague memory... Synthya was a "Stranger In A Strange Land".

They both stood in unison & made the time-honored handshake. "Deal!"

The Hologram flickered and died.

Kara put down the remote and looked around her exquisite and private gardens in the Multi Billionaires enclosure of Citi Gateway.

Distant sounds of construction drifted across from another residence and she rolled her eyes in annoyance.

"Rich people," she said to no one in particular.

"Always building stuff. You spend all this money to live in a Paradise and all you can hear is power tools,"

She reached for her gun but saw a message on her communicator.

"Whats this, a new book by Matt Lehman, Shadows of the Past,"

"Huh, judging by the cover it looks exciting, the last one was pretty good, apart from the bits with Ouberos, he's so over rated as a Pirate,"

Ignoring her gun she downloaded the book and started to read.

"I better be in this one or there's going to be trouble,"

[Continued from Here]

The Station Director leaned back heavily in his chair after seeing the medical officer leave out of the corner of his eye. He thought carefully for a moment before leaning forward again & hitting a key on his Comms panel on his desk.

The face of 1 of the personnel appeared on his screen & gave a bored response, "Requisitions." A tiny moment's pause, then, visibly straightening their posture. "Oh! Sir! Yes, Director! What may I do for you, Director?"

"Contact Achilles Corp. & send in an order for 1 of their robot units. I need it programmed for... um..." He ticked off a mental list on his fingers. "Basic Protocol... Linguistics...  Personal Assistant, with interactive subroutines..." He paused, trying to think of what else might be needed for their unique newcomer. "Oh, yes, & include a detailed history database. I'll also require an open programming access key." He nodded to himself. That ought to just about cover it... for now.

He could see the Requisitions officer's eyes starting to widen. "Sir... Yes, Sir. Any particular design? I recall there were options available now, mentioned in the trade publications... & Sir, if I may confirm, your order, with these options, may amount to a substantial sum of credits...?" the face & tone asked timidly.

"Yes. I know it will, & file it under 'Special Projects'. What were the new design options you mentioned?"

"Well, Sir... there's the standard model of which I'm sure you're familiar... the recent addition is called, 'Sappho'..." A picture from their sales ad appeared on his screen; he peered more closely at a softer, less imposing, more rounded feminine design. He thought quickly, considering how their newcomer might better react to that form. He nodded in satisfaction.

"Very well, include that in the order." The picture of the 'Sappho' unit was replaced with the officer, who looked away for a moment, plainly calculating the total sum, & then looked back to the Director, visibly gulping.

"S-Sir... with delivery, the total credits will c-come to-"

The Director interrupted with a snap, "I don't need to know the details, have Accounting & Finance tend to it! Just have them enter it under 'Special Projects'."

The face of the officer nodded, "Y-Yes, Sir. It's a special order item, & transit time for delivery should have it here within approximately 10 days, or less, depending on favorable shipping routes. Considering the expense, Sir, I strongly recommend-"

"Secured Courier? Yes, valid point. Now, get it done. Out." the Director again interrupted & impatiently slapped the key to disconnect. He found it irritating & tedious to involve himself with all of the mundane operations of the station's many divisions & their activities, & heaved himself out of his chair & strode back to his dispenser holding the remainder of his Void Coffee & poured himself another steaming mug.

He returned to his chair, careful not to slop any more of that precious brew along the way. "So many complications", he sighed to himself as he took a welcome sip, eyes gazing through the steam at something visible only to him.

I hope they will become affordable....
12 Sep 2020, 11:23pm
JB strolled through the dark alleyways of The Warrens. Security may have been running around the docks but The Warrens were a ghetto, left to fend for themselves. A lot of pilots avoided coming down into the rat runs but, for those who can handle themselves, there's business to be made down there.

JB had been planning to head straight to the bar but decided to take a detour as he knew the denizens of The Warrens would be making the most of the station security being distracted. There were the large scale Black Market merchants selling by the tonne but, down here, you could get your hands on some random little bits of contraband.

JB slipped through a doorway into a small dwelling with "Uncle Stinky's Diner" sprayed on the wall... there were a few small groups of shady looking buggers sat at tables in the dark and smokey room. JB went up to the large hatch at the back and ordered a beer. The grumpy man on the other side of the hatch grunted and passed a bottle through. JB paid and went and sat at an empty table.

JB took out the comms device that Batu had thrown to him down in the docks and typed,

"Batu,

I'm in Uncle Stinky's Diner down in The Warrens, if you're still looking to do business come over.

JB."

JB didn't want to put too much info down as messages can always be intercepted. The Warrens were a bit of a shithole but Batu looked like he could look after himself.

As JB sat sorting data chips his thoughts turned to Descartes. This wasn't the kind of place he'd invite her to join him... but there was a connection, wasn't there? JB swigged his beer and looked at the door.
