Elite roleplay: Citi Gateway

CITI GATEWAY

The Orbis station is a center of activity. Within the station a myriad of places can be found.
  • The Warrens: Where the poor plebs of the station live. It's is a breeding ground for the most unscrupulous. Keep an eye on your wallet when traversing the corridors of these areas.
  • Habitation Complex: For those workers and pilots that can afford it, this area provides closer to 1G gravity for more earth like living.
  • Commerce Divison: and Administration Where the larger corporations make their home. Station administration can be found here.
  • Industrial Complex: Where industry manufactures their various goods.
  • Entertainment: District Bars, theaters and night clubs, tattoo parlors and other establishments can be found vying for a commanders credits in exchange for a bit of fun.
  • Station Security: A high tech brig used to house law breakers until they can be tried, and or deported off station.
  • Medical Ward: Where commanders can get patched up, enhanced, or fix existing cybernetics.

General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

"A little bit of both," the former inquisitor replied. "But I think the personal part is gonna involve some punching."

Jubei turned his head, keeping an eye on the door. He was safe enough but it didn't hurt to be aware. "Your tattoos... Pegasi, right? I bet you've seen your share of action, if ya got those."

Batu, being Batu, couldn't help but to smile upon hearing that someone might get their facial features displaced.

-"Pegasi. Was it that obvious? Smart breeder always brands their cattle..."

Jubei's observation almost felt like a compliment. The crowd usually dismisses the ink as a mere sign of gang affiliation, a bad reminder of one's presumed rebellous teenage years maybe, or worse, a mere sign of bad taste. Carefull observer, however, will start noticing patterns. The bizzare art resting under his dermis painted the story of his life, and could be used to trace his origins. It was all there. His homeworld. His age. Social status. The insignia of the dreadfull raider pack that took him as their tribute. The ship he was assigned to. Superiors he had defeated. Settlements he helped ransack...

Naturally, imperial patrons of Qetesh found an issue with this artistry, and were generous enough to offer a treatment that would restore Batu's body it's original purity. He never gave them any answer. Not because he felt attached to the ink, certanly not. Batu never asked for it in the first place. This action would put a story of Batu Mandakh, the dreadfull raider of the Khanate, to it's end. As he has failed to assimilate within imperial society, there would be no identity left for him... Besides, did he deserve a right to erase the evidence of his past deeds so easely?

The question in the air was: how much has Jubei really decyphred from his skin? Naturally, the full majesty of Batu's artworks was covered by his flight suit, and other pieces of clothing, but was the visible part enough for the former inquisitor to realise know who he was, and what he did?

-"As for the action, oh yes, I did. All in the name of greater good, believe it or not. He chuckled, barely able to handle the irony of his last statement. "Good times. I'll spare you the details unless you're either hiring, or the drinks are on you."

Jubei pulls out a cigar and lights it. "I've spend a good amount of time in Pegasi. While there, I learned a lot. I know the tattoos are something one gets as a right of passage, and usually in celebration of victory. Then there's the matter of clan tats and symbols."

He took a long pull and waited for a brief second before exhaling the built up smoke. "I recon you got more on ya, that's why I said you've seen some action."

Jubei had two of his own tattoos, despite Imperials taking issue with such crude body markings. He wore them on his arms with the same pride that he wore his battle scars. In fact, Jubei earned his tattoos in Pegasi. They marked the beginning and the completion of his battles with addiction. Both were given to Jubei by his good friend who helped him back into the world of sobriety.

"Kid, I bet you think you're pretty strong, eh?"

The clerk was watching the entryway when McLaughlin and his two companions arrived, Edmund had only been working at the front desk for the Alliance embassy on Citi Gateway for a month at this point but even he knew that this was not a regular event. He eyed up the two armoured figures that took up positions in the lobby, their gaze slowly sweeping across the room and no doubt taking him in as well.

"Legionnaires," Edmund had heard whispers of the Sap Core Legion. Enforcers under the direct command of the Prime Minister's office and outside the jurisdiction of the Council of Admirals. The two armoured figures wore armour that was both familiar and foreign to Edmund at the same time. Their armour was reminiscent of the old *Bear* armour from back during the Galcop era, but it seemed to have been modernised. Their waists were adorned with a strange garment that wrapped around their waste and came down to about their knees, leaving the front open. The officer and the two Legionnaires bore an Alliance insignia he didn't recognise.

McLaughlin strode up to the front desk and got right to business, "I'm here to see Ambassador Polk, is he in his office?" Edmund gestured with a sweaty palm towards a door behind him and to his right, "Yea-Yes, he's in there Sir." McLaughlin face took ona small smile of amusement, he thanked Edmund and made his way into the Ambassador's office, gesturing for the two Legionnaires to wait in the lobby. Edmunds throat was dry as he attempted to focus on his work and ignore the gaze of the silent sentinels who were no doubt keeping a watchful eye on him along with the lobby and the area outside the embassy.
11 Feb 2021, 4:47pm
Alexei Polk was tapping his desk when McLaughlin came through the door, he waited until the door was closed all the way before he began speaking, his brown eyes warily watching McLaughlin as he made his way to the desk and took a seat in front of it. "You shouldn't be here, what the hell are you thinking?! Showing up like this, after what you did." McLaughlin paused briefly in the act of sitting down to look the Ambassador in the eye before fully sitting down. "I haven't the faintest idea what you're talking about."

The ambassador now had a bead of sweat on his forehead as he continued in a frantic whisper, "You- you murdered Adrian fucking Gilbert! You know how many strings I had to pull? How many favours I had to call in to keep your name and face out of it?!" Polk wiped a hand across his forehead and wiped it on his trouser leg, gritting his teeth, "Why didn't you just arrest him and hand him over to Station Security?! His testimony could have been invaluable."

McLaughlin adopted a silent stare for a few long moments before he answered in a level voice, doing his best to be patient with the Ambassador. "And what was I supposed to tell them? "Hey, I broke into this guy's apartment illegally and uncovered a conspiracy by one of the biggest corporations in the Federation to commit fraud, blackmail, murder, etc..." McLaughlin's eyes narrowed as he continued, "I had an Alliance VIP, up in the air who as far as I knew was in immediate danger, I couldn't leave him alone to immediately report to his Fed handlers."

McLaughlin leaned back in his seat, finishing with a hard edge in his voice, "He betrayed the Alliance and was complicit in the conspiracy to murder Tina Parks, he was a threat to be eliminated and I had no other choice, if I had to go back and do it again I would." Polk sighed, sagging back in his seat, running a hand through his thinning brown hair, which was turning grey at the temples. "Why are you back here then? The trail went cold, there are no leads. Barboni disappeared in a puff of smoke into the void."

McLaughlin smiled, a glint in his eye as he leaned forward, "That's exactly right Alexei, that is "precisely" how he vanished."

Polk furrowed his eyebrows at the Commodre's statement, "what do you mean?" McLaughlin stood up to walk around the desk to stand beside Polk, "I can tell you or I can show you."

One of JB's fences down in The Warrens had been having trouble with some local thugs. He'd sent Panza down to lend a hand whilst they were at the station but, with JB rarely getting called to The Embassies by strangers, he'd called his android copilot to join him... just in case things went sideways.

Panza had his synthetic mask on to make him look more human... not the best of disguises but it did the job.

JB and Panza, trying their hardest to be low-key, entered the lobby from the main concourse and walked up to the reception desk.

"My name's Commander Threepwood," JB introduced himself, "We're here to meet Ambassador Polk."
13 Feb 2021, 8:01pm
Edmund looked up, happy to see a new face other than the two Legionnaires who had been silently watching over the lobby for the last two hours, his hopes they woud be gone by now were in vain. He was somewhat relieved that their attention was now focused on the newcomer who had approached the desk. "Welcome to our embassy Commander Threepwood, you're expected just ins..." his voice trailed off as he saw the man standing behind him, who was silently standing behind Threepwood, the hairs on Edmund's neck stood up as he looked at the man's face, he gave off the same vibe as the Legionnaires.

He was dangerous. The Legionnaires evidently felt the same as their attention was now fixated on him, their hands resting softly near the triggers of their weapons, they made no moves other than that. Edmund put on his best smile and turned back to Threepwood, "And who is your companion? I assume he is a member of your crew? I must specify the invitation was for you specfically."

Edmund's hopes of a boring and mundane end to the day were quickly looking more and more futile.
13 Feb 2021, 8:26pm
"This is my lawyer," replied JB, automatically cautious, "He helps make sure all our deals are legal and above board... I can't make decisions for my organisation without his legal thumbs-up."

JB was getting a bad feeling from the receptionist. The sweaty little man's furtive glances between Panza and at the two armed guards that they'd passed on the way in was starting to set off alarm bells in JB's head.

JB was happiest doing his work in dark, quiet little corners... this set up was already making his arse twitch without the receptionist and the armed troops getting all jumpy too.

"...maybe we should come back another time?..." JB nodded to Panza as they readied to leave.
13 Feb 2021, 10:32pm
Just as Edmund was about to speak one of the Legionnaires stepped forward, speaking to Threepwood directly and ignoring the receptionist. "You and your... "lawyer" can go ahead." She then opened a door behind the receptionist desk and waited while holding the door open. Inside was an office where the Ambassador could be seen sitting at his desk looking at something on his terminal while another man could be seen sitting across from him with his back turned towards the doorway.

As he turned around to face the doorway, Threepwood was greeted by the face of Robert McDaid, his closs cropped red hair and beard accompanied by the same cold blue eyes as their last meetingm however instead of wearing business attire he was now wearing the uniform of an officer in the Alliance Defence Forces. "I'm glad you were able to make it Commander Threepwood." The corner of his mouth curled into a tiny smirk "Or do you prefer "Mickey"? Either one is fine with me." He gestured towards a seat beside him, across from the Ambassador's desk. "You look a little tense, you can rest asured that I've given Alexei here my personal guarantee that we're all going to be on our best behaviour."

The officer gestured with his hand to the lobby and the building around them, "This is his house so to speak."
13 Feb 2021, 10:52pm
JB remembered Robert from the bar. He'd pushed Robert's business Spud's way... and, if he remembered correctly, Spud had done pretty well out of the deal.

JB took the chair next to Robert, moving it slightly to give himself a better arc of vision, and slowly sat down.

Panza took a couple of steps back and leant against the wall... the combat suites JB had installed taking over, telling him to give himself a better view of everything going on. Just in case.

JB took the hipflask from his inside jacket pocket, unscrewed the top and took a swig, then put the top back on and put it away.

Still cautious of his surroundings, but confident in his and Panza's abilities, JB turned his attention to Polk.

"So... you say you've got work you want to push our way?"
13 Feb 2021, 11:12pm
Polk and McLaughlin exchanged a silent look between the two of them, Polk stood up and nodded to McLaughlin, "The Commodre will be able to answer any questions you have," he paused before walking out the door leading to the lobby, "he's the one footing the bill in any case." As he left the Legionnaire outside took a step through the door before McLaughlin gave them a hard stare, "I'll be out shortly Tanaka, you can close the door on your way out." The Legionnaire silently stared at McLaughlin for a few moments before slowly backing out and closing the door.

McLaughlin sighed and turned to face Threepwood, his eyes skimming over the man's companion leaning against the wall. "I need to speak to Barboni, you know where to find him, yes?"
14 Feb 2021, 12:02am
JB relaxed a little as the others left the room.

"Barboni?" JB repeated, surprised to be asked about him. "Everyone knows where to find him. He'll be back in HR 6999... he runs Six & Nines Free. He was here a while back for some big Fed meeting that turned sour... What's a third-rate swindler like Barboni got to do with anything?"
14 Feb 2021, 12:22am
McLaughlin's blood went cold when he was told that Barboni had been here for a "Fed meeting." Thoughts began racing through his mind as he mulled over this tidbit, "Was he working for the Feds? Were they trying buy Lakon shares through him or off him?" If it was the former then best case, Parks was being held somewhere as collateral.

Worst case she was long dead by now.

McLaughlin suppressed these thoughts as he asked in a casual voice, "And how did that meeting go?" McLaughlin scratched his beard, doing his best to appear casual. "Things certainly got a bit lively when those Feds pulled up outside the station."
14 Feb 2021, 12:57am
It was obvious at this point that there was no work coming JB's way, therefore no pay-out was coming.

JB knew Barboni relatively well... Jamaica Inn and the Six & Nines Free did a lot of business together... he was a weaselly little fuck but he was always good to them. On the other hand, he barely knew this Robert guy.

"I remember... but if you want me to roll-over on Barboni then tell me what this is about. We've got a pretty strict "Don't Kiss And Tell" policy... even for the likes of him."
14 Feb 2021, 1:44am
McLaughlin was quiet for a few moments, he then came to a decision and slowly pulled a data slate out of his pocket, he quickly looked through it until he found the correct image. He passed it over to Threepwood, it displayed the image of a woman in her 40's, brown hair held up in a bun in the back with pale skin and green eyes looking directly at the camera.

"Her name is Tina Parks, she's a shareholder with a great deal of shares in Lakon Spaceways. I was to meet her and another named Adrian Gilbert here on this station around about the time you and I last met." McLaughlin paused, exhaling through his nose as he remembered that day. "I was to buy their shares off them on behalf of SAP CORP when the meeting was cancelled at the last minute. "I have reason to believe Tina Parks felt her life was in imminent danger and fled the station with the aid of your associate Mr Barboni."
