Elite roleplay: Citi Gateway

CITI GATEWAY

The Orbis station is a center of activity. Within the station a myriad of places can be found.
  • The Warrens: Where the poor plebs of the station live. It's is a breeding ground for the most unscrupulous. Keep an eye on your wallet when traversing the corridors of these areas.
  • Habitation Complex: For those workers and pilots that can afford it, this area provides closer to 1G gravity for more earth like living.
  • Commerce Divison: and Administration Where the larger corporations make their home. Station administration can be found here.
  • Industrial Complex: Where industry manufactures their various goods.
  • Entertainment: District Bars, theaters and night clubs, tattoo parlors and other establishments can be found vying for a commanders credits in exchange for a bit of fun.
  • Station Security: A high tech brig used to house law breakers until they can be tried, and or deported off station.
  • Medical Ward: Where commanders can get patched up, enhanced, or fix existing cybernetics.

General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

"-Incoming message!"

COVAS made it's announcement, and the dark cockpit was lit by a faint glow of a notification icon. Startled pilot viewed the delivered message. To his surprise, its encryption codes matched one of those he uses to secure communication between him and his current employers. The sender did not reveal much about himself, besides signing up under an acronym "JB".

After a long thought, the pilot popped up the console, and typed in the response, to be sent immediately:

"-I'm OMW."
17 Sep 2020, 6:28pm
"-I'm OMW." flashed up the reply on the comms unit JB was given by Batu.

JB waved over one of the regulars of Uncle Stinky's Diner. He'd bought a couple of bottles of Silver Sea Rum from him before so he hoped he could get his hands on some more... and whatever little treats he might have up his grubby little sleeves. JB hoped he could get what he needed, and this guy away from him, before Batu got there.

Diner doors finally swung over, withholding the usual rumble of the place and bringing everyone's attention to the doorstep. Flickering neon light revealed Batu's silhouette. The man took a step forward, which in an on-going silence made a distinct, audible thump. Local denizens of the place discreetly sized the pilot up, and then slowly returned to their usual affairs, not counting in the three grumps, sitting on the table just right of the entrance, clearly inviting newcomer to the starring contest. Just a few, long seconds later the group finally decided to look away with the rest. Whatever message these men read in Batu's eyes will remain a mistery to the smuggler.

Batu disorderly slumped onto the chair just in front of the JB, and leaned forward.

-"Nice place for a date."

The pilot spoke while looking right into smuggler's eyes, uncomfortably examining either him, or his expressions.

-"So... you're saying that you may have something for me?"
18 Sep 2020, 8:36pm
"Yeahhhh..." JB started, "It's a bit of a dump down here but these rat-bags know to keep their business to themselves."

JB had already set up a couple of glasses on the table and had opened a bottle of rum in anticipation of Batu's arrival. It may have been presumptuous but JB started to pour them both a big slug of rum, remembering that Batu had said before that he drank.

"I've got some cargo jobs, there's a few guardian jobs, some bait and distraction work... and some off-the-books sort of stuff if you're flexible that way. What sort of work do you usually do?"
19 Sep 2020, 11:36am
Batu swig his glass full of rum, flinched distinctly, and then plunged it back onto the table, while making a loud, exaggerated hiss.

-" Cargo jobs? Bait jobs? I didn't expect a full set here."

The man spoke, whilst looking at the empty glass, playing with it using his right hand. His stare, now more relaxed, went back up to lock onto the smuggler, again.

-"Who are you exactly?"
19 Sep 2020, 1:38pm
"Me?" asked JB whilst taking a mouthful of the rum and pushing the bottle into the middle of the table, gesturing to Batu to help himself. "I wear a lot of hats, at the moment I'm coordinating certain jobs for my organisation that we'd like to keep off the mission boards. They might not be above board but we pay well to make up for it."

JB tried to make out which side of the law Batu danced on... he seemed to be keeping his cards close to his chest, a trait JB was aware he did too much himself.

JB had remembered that Batu had given a vague answer about his work when JB asked him previously in the docks... most undercover cops seemed to be in a rush to get their backstory out so he wasn't getting that vibe from Batu.

"What about you, Batu? What is it that gets you back into that cockpit every day?"
19 Sep 2020, 5:39pm
-"A few things...."

Batu paused and, without so much as a please or thank you, poured in more rum into his glass.

-"Survival, I guess. A man's got to eat, and well ... I'm not exactly qualified to do anything else."

The man released a slight chuckle.

-"I also like when things happen. Consortium tried to make me a tour operator. Didn't work. That's just who I am, and I can't change that. Nobody can..."

Finishing the sentence, the pilot took yet another shot at the glass of rum.
19 Sep 2020, 7:04pm
Finishing his glass, JB topped himself up. He was glad to see Batu getting stuck in, he found it hard to trust people who didn't have any vices. There's no saints out here in space... and especially not here in Uncle Stinky's Diner.

JB felt a bit more comfortable down here in The Warrens and Batu looked pretty relaxed too. Batu had a bit of an accent that JB couldn't put his finger on but he didn't want to poke into his history just yet... JB was in the process of creating a portfolio of contacts and was hoping that Batu would be a good fit.

"So this consortium you worked for? What happened there then, mate... you fall out or you still with them?"
20 Sep 2020, 7:26pm
-"Nothing happened."

Batu reached into his pocket for a fresh batch of cigarettes, took one, lighted it up, placed it in his hand and then, completely relaxed, leaned back on his seat, crossing his legs.

-"I had to leave my old acquaintances behind ... and I happened to be around."

Pilot lost himself in his thoughts. His eyes now pointed above and beyond the smuggler, to a land and events far, far away from the unappealing time and place they both now occupied. Few moments passed, and Batu was ready to continue, but not before taking a drag.

-"Consortium needed someone willing to kill for credits. I took the contracts to get back on my feet. Now I am. Got myself decent equipment, and now I'm looking for better contractor, or a buyer. Simple."

JB nodded as he listened to Batu as he was talking about his wetwork jobs.

JB had killed before... not just destroying ships but up close, face to face murder. JB wasn't totally devoid of attachment when it came to these things but it was a toolset that served him well within his organisation.

Maybe it was that level of dehumanisation that stopped him from getting close to people...

...Nah, you just can't trust folk, JB

"Get back on your feet? You hit hard times, brother?" asked JB as he swigged back some more rum. "We've all been there, mate."

-"Nope. Just had to leave everything behind."

Uttering last sentence, Batu turned his head to the right, and hissed out a curse. He then turned back to look straight at his interlocutor.

-"Now tell me, which "hat" of yours is asking, huh?"
22 Sep 2020, 11:03pm
"Truthfully? Recruiter right now."

Truthfully... not a very important word in JB's vocabulary but he felt like Batu was holding back because he wasn't being very open with him himself.

"Like I said, our organisation is mostly legitimate, but I'm in charge of the work that we like to keep off the books. What I'm doing out here is looking for able Commanders with a flexible morality to subcontract these jobs to... and hopefully form a network to use again in the future. We're not a huge outfit so I'm hoping we can be mutually beneficial to each other. Does this sound like something you'd be comfortable with?"

-"Naturally. Credits are credits."

Batu answered out of hand.

-I like it that way. At least I get to see the face of the man handling the dough. Useful if he turns out not to be as truthful as he claimed to be."

Pilot let out a short, deep, fake laugh, and took a drag from his smoke.

-"Although, I've seen organisations put their termination jobs on board officially, like it was a parish notice. You know ...  I'm curious, what makes you so afraid?"
23 Sep 2020, 10:52pm
JB took a swig of the rum. You could call him a scum-bag, call him trash, call him a thug or even a liar... but "afraid"? JB calmly poured himself another drink and took a slow glug.

"Not afraid, mate... we just like to stay under the radar. Our organisation like to keep ourselves looking legit to keep the authorities off our back. We're smugglers, through and through... so we get jobs from clients who know we can do things on the sly. We don't often do wetwork but we'll get jobs that the clients don't want to be linked to."

JB calmly sank his drink and poured another.

"A lot of our clients have political interests and therefore don't want to be associated with a smuggling outfit, so we need to find pilots who can't be directly linked to their underhanded shit. We weaponise coups, we undermine security and we false flag activities in those systems. We'd never ask a pilot to do something they're not happy with. Our jobs have different levels of criminality, but we pay accordingly."

JB looked at Batu through his cloud of smoke.

"Credits are credits... whether you want them from our outfit is up to you."

The Galactic Bar was its usual self, full of people doing their best to look dangerous and tough by being obnoxious. Dyson and Thade stayed for one drink before moving on. There was plenty for them to look into and sitting in the bar would make Vodan even more prickly than he already was.

Just down the concourse security had The Highlights motel behind crime scene tape. That was going to blueball a lot of explorers and raiders that had stopped off just for the motels' hospitality.  The pair watched and listened to the officers talking, apparently, something like this had also happened at a second-hand tech parts store in the warrens.

“I’ll go see about that one Dyson, after all, you’re real familiar with this place.” said Thade with a sideways smile.

Dyson’s retaliatory kick clanged off Thade’s new cybernetic shin.

“You really gonna go down there on foot? You know you walk like you shit yourself now? Ya should have got two of those.. ..  Or an IQ booster” joked Dyson

Thad’s replacement leg had cost him everything he’d saved and he was eager to find the woman that had explosively amputated his leg back on Hauser's Reach.

“Therapist said I’ll get used to it but you’re gonna be a prick for the rest of your life. I’ll see what I can learn from the warrens then we’ll meet at the dock in an hour. That shit show on the way in will definitely have something to do with Goodness and that gun bitch”

Thade couldn’t even think about that woman without narrowing his eyes and Dyson knew the look well.

“Hey Thade, remember where the orders come from. We maybe workin for Vodan, but shit rolls downhill. If he gets it in the neck we’re next, and Vengerfield doesn’t give warnings. Un-fucking-harmed are the orders. Remember that” Dyson locked eyes with Thade as he reminded him of their situation.
With a head movement just perceivable enough to be called a nod, Thade waddled off towards the closets lift.

Down in the warrens the mood was tense, kind of like the Galactic. Not because some ass hole with a weapon was doing his tough-guy act for anyone that could be bothered to pay attention through their own hard-man routine, this was protective. Everyone down here owned very little and therefore had everything to lose. One of the best shops on the level had been wrecked and it's well known and liked owner killed, and now security were getting in everyone’s less than on-the-level business.

Thade could feel eyes on him every step of the way making him eager to get out of there. This Crime scene was much like the one around The Highlights but with fewer officers. The warrens didn’t get the same attention as the main habitation and business levels. Security was moving out a body and CSI was doing a lack-lustier job of investigating. The officers seemed to be feeling the same as Thade, no one was chatty and they all noticed the guy coming to watch.

Before security could come to move him along, Thade decided to find another place to be. He was going to learn nothing down here because the locals had closed ranks deciding outsiders meant nothing but trouble right now. Thade felt he may be able to get a good look at what was left of the fight on the surface pad from his ship, so he took a lift to the docks.

Standing in the lift with a few strangers was as uncomfortable as ever on this station and Thade’s new leg itched badly at the hip where it interfaces with his flesh. Scratching that itch would just make him look like he was playing with his balls so he tried to relax and looked at the ceiling wishing the itch away. A screen behind a cage in an upper corner caught his attention. It was an ad for a “Coming Later” section new show called Gateway to the Citi. Thade pulled out his own slate and connected to the local network to watch with sound.

An Image of Goodness taking a running jump out of a moving maglev carriage played in slow-motion as the anchor advertised the segment that would apparently throw new light on the recent outburst of violent crimes onboard the station. Thade dragged a hand down his face to encourage his eyebrows to descend while the other idly rubbed his itchy crotch.

“Dyson” he said to his slate to start a call to his wingmate.

“Hay man, you can relax. Someone has done our work for us. Put the local news channel on in about forty-five minuets” .. . “Oh yes we’ll have some good news for Vodan, it looks like a local reporter has been investigating our targets”
