Elite roleplay: Citi Gateway

CITI GATEWAY

The Orbis station is a center of activity. Within the station a myriad of places can be found.
  • The Warrens: Where the poor plebs of the station live. It's is a breeding ground for the most unscrupulous. Keep an eye on your wallet when traversing the corridors of these areas.
  • Habitation Complex: For those workers and pilots that can afford it, this area provides closer to 1G gravity for more earth like living.
  • Commerce Divison: and Administration Where the larger corporations make their home. Station administration can be found here.
  • Industrial Complex: Where industry manufactures their various goods.
  • Entertainment: District Bars, theaters and night clubs, tattoo parlors and other establishments can be found vying for a commanders credits in exchange for a bit of fun.
  • Station Security: A high tech brig used to house law breakers until they can be tried, and or deported off station.
  • Medical Ward: Where commanders can get patched up, enhanced, or fix existing cybernetics.

General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

It seemed to JB that Robert gave Barboni far too much credit. Barboni was a crook who used the Federation for free security and tax breaks. Every so often Barboni would throw a big piss-up for the work Jamaica Inn did for Six & Nine Free just so he could write it off against tax.

JB thought back to when he took Barboni off-station and the trouble Barboni had found himself in with the Federation Bigwigs at the Lakon meeting.

"Barboni had to get off the station because he sold his shares behind the rest of the Federation's backs... he never said who to."

JB took out his hipflask again whilst thinking how much he should say. It didn't seem like he was betraying much of Barboni's confidence by helping this investigation... and the fewer people he had looking in to his own business the better.

"They were after his blood over it so he had his Second, Akers, track me down to get him back home. If Barboni had organised to get someone else off-station first..." JB took a swig whilst he pondered the thought of it, "...I don't know why he'd sort Ms Parks out before himself. Barboni is a selfish and left-handed little man. Unless there was more to his and Ms Park's relationship, he would've left her to fend for herself whilst he scurried out".

JB put the cap back on his flask and looked back to Robert.

McLaughlin considered this new information, "Well, he didn't sell them to me. And if he didn't sell them to the Feds I'm left a bit perplexed as to who bought them." The officer waved a dismissive hand. "In any case the Lakon takeover seems to be falling through anyway, what I'm more concerned about is this "Jupiter Division" going after Ms. Parks in order to tie up any loose ends, silence witnesses, etc."

Mclaughlin rubbed his chin as considered Barboni's motivation, "It's possible that she simply paid him. The value of her shares in Lakon was in the neighbourhood of about 10 Billion credits so she's not lacking for money. McLaughlin let out a small chuckle, "Maybe Barboni is tired of being a third rate swindler and wants to move up to being second rate? Pretty ballsy move, buying shares for the Feds with their money and then selling it from under their noses."
15 Feb 2021, 12:09am
"Whatever it was, he squared things up with the top brass once we got him back. Barboni can talk his way out of anything so, if you do seek him out, I'd take whatever he says with a big pinch of salt. He's easy enough to find, he moved his HQ over to Wingrove Station in the Tata system. As for Ms Parks, never heard her name till now."

JB shrugged... whatever Barboni was up to, murdering women wasn't his usual Modus Operandi. Even for money.

"That's about the long and short of it."
15 Feb 2021, 2:13am
McLaugjlin nodded, taking all of this info in. "Well, I'm very grateful for your assistance Commander, it would seem we are sorely uninformed about events in this particular region." McLaughlin took a credit chit out of his inner pocket and put it on the table, sliding it over to Threepwood's end. "No good deed goes unpunished, your compensation for your time, there's 500,000 credits on that... ah, almost forgot."

McLaughlin took another credit chit out of his pocket and placed it next to the previous one, "Your finder's fee for linking me up with Spud, 250,000 on that one." McLaughlin clasped his hands together and leaned back, "Not bad pay for a short little chat, huh?" McLaughlin seemed thoughtful for a moment before he continued, "For what it's worth my name is Commodre Gerry McLaughlin, ADF, SCARF division." The officer reached out his hand towards JB, offering a handshake.
15 Feb 2021, 2:56am
JB reached forward and shook Gerry's hand.

"Good luck with your investigation, mate."

JB subtly palmed the credit chits with the other hand and gave Gerry a concordant nod.

"If you need any similar services to what I offered Barboni, here's how to find me." JB produced a business card and put it on the table. He then turned his attention to Panza. "C'mon then, lurk."
15 Feb 2021, 4:08am
Gerry pulled out his datapad and began consulting it, without looking up and raising a hand in farewell he said, "Do give Ms. Trinkett my regards Commander, good luck to you." With that the Legionnaire outside opened the door and poked her head in, seeing that everything was alright she silently held the door open for JB and his companion.

Batu noticed The atmosphere getting less tense, and seeing Jubei exposing his nicotine addiction only reinforced that feeling. His refusal to help himself with ex-raider's cigarettes was, however, beyond him. The pilot, naturally, noticed the oddities on his interlocutor's forearms, but refused to give any comment.

Was the Imperial showing his true colors, or just trying to gain Batu's trust?

-"There's nothing to "learn" in Pegasi." He responded, in somewhat condensending tone. "Human civilisation over there rans it's cycle. Right now, we're back in the Stone Age. Strongest motherf*ucker stays on the top of the foodchain. Strongest and meanest."
As Batu finished the last sentence, he carelessly shook of the cigarette ash onto the station's deck. "Loyal members of the Alpha's pack gain new teritory, and females." He added out of the blue, giving voice to his chian of thought without making sure that Jubei actually followed it.

-"As for the question... It almost souds like you're trying to start something up. Bad place, bad time, I'd say..." Batu said, nodding his head sideways towards the more populated area of the district. "

-"I respect you enough to give you a warning though." His tone was now serious, and his eyes fixed on Jubei's. "Yes. I am strong. Strong enough to do something that wouldn't earn me another paintjob anymore. Believe me."
17 Feb 2021, 12:53am
"Your warning is noted, but not needed." Jubei replied to Batu's words. "Pegasi is a place that shows one type of strength: brute strength. While powerful, brute strength is faulty on it's own. However, with guidance or a cause, it can be focused into something awesome."

The former inquisitor looked at his cigar for a brief second. Perhaps it was rude of him to refuse the offer of cigarettes to then only produce his own nicotine product. He chuckled. It wasn't often that he smoked, but it seemed that when he did, it was on Citi Gateway.

"Ha, ya know I don't smoke often. Only when I'm feelin' philosophical." Jubei laughed. "Here, come with me. I wanna show you something."
20 Feb 2021, 10:19pm
Jubei's request just asked to be turned into a bad joke. This time, however, Batu decided to hold his compolsure. Funny. This man just a few seconds ago was looking behnd his back, paranoid. Now they exchenged smiles and chuckles, the ones of the true type even, without any bullshit to be hiding in between. Question was: what changed?

The former inquisitor missed something in his speech. Old masters of Batu Mandakh did indeed use his strength to push further causes they considered noble, or good. Every attrocity he commited was done in the name of peace and security of his homeworld, and of homeworlds of many like him, shaped to never feel remorse about his victims. Batu was curious enough to discover that he lived a lie. To try and convince that raider that indeed there were valid reasons to put up arms, for something else than a hefty sum of credits, may be a fruitless task... or at least this was something that Batu intended to proove to his interlocutor, whatever he had in mind, whatever was his plan, wherever they might go.

-"Allright, Socrates, lead the way." He replied, and stubbed out his cigarette.
21 Feb 2021, 2:34am
Jubei led the younger Batu down the corridor of Citi Gateway's entertainment district. They passed by holovid theatres, clothing stores, data vendors, until Jubei stopped in front of a particularly nice building in the Red Light district. The name of the establishment glowed in a beautiful neon hugh.

The Olive Grove

The Imperial looked up at the sign and smiled. "This is a place that, on the surface, is a place where a someone can get their rocks off. It's a pleasure palace, sure. Hell, they got most whatever ya may be looking for, as long as it ain't extreme. I've never used it for any of those services, but it's one of my favourite places in the galaxy. Really nice bar inside."

He took a long drag on his cigar before continuing. "That's not why I love this place so much. I love it for what it represents. This place is special, a testament to the strength of its creator, Jemine. She wanted to provide a safe place for those who work in the pleasure business. To bring up those who had been looked down upon and abused. They are provided a fair wage, medical, and they get to set their own rules, or even leave the business entirely. Jem faced a lot of opposition from existing sex establishments and pimps because all of their girls and guys wanted to work for her. They tried every intimidation tactic you can think of, especially violence."

"But she stood her ground, and inspired others to help her cause. She wanted to protect people she knew to be vulnerable. That's what real strength is: fightin' for somethin' bigger than yourself."

Gerry watched Threepwood and his companion leave, he waited a few moments before muttering into his ear piece. "They gone?" A few moments passed before he heard Tanaka's voice come back in response, "They're out in the promenade now, can't see them anymore." McLaughlin nodded to himself, "Both of you come in here." The door to the office opened and the two legionnaires came through, Tada clsoing the door behind him. The Commodre stood up and made his way to the Ambassador's seat on the other side of the desk.

Without turning to look at them he said, "Take a seat and take your buckets off." The two paused for for a moment before undoing the seals at their necks and pulling their helmets off while also taking their weapons and attaching them to the magnetic points on the rear of their suits. The two of them were natives to Tsuki Yomi and bore the trade mark grey eyes and raven black hair of their people, to outsiders they were generally regarded as being cold and and aloof but Gerry knew all too well that they were fiercely protective and affectionate towards their friends and family. The two of them took seats on the opposite of the table from Gerry and stared at him silently, Gerry sighed, knowing what was coming.

"I unders..." Tanaka cut him off, her eyes narrowed, "What the hell were you thinking? Sitting in a room alone with that thing?" Her voice was calm.but her eyes burned with fury. Tada leaned back.in his seat, "Whatever that thing was, it wasn't human. Fucker didn't breath the whole time I was watching it." Gerry grew irritated, "He isn't an idiot, you two were outside along with embassy security..." Gerry gestured to the door behind them "... station security is outside in the promenade, this isn't the Warrens, if he started something here he'd have left in cuffs or a body bag."

Tanaka didn't back down as she pressed onwards, "You don't know that! This station attracts all kinds of crackpots and wannabe hotshots. What would you have done if he got the insane notion to sick that thing on you?!" Tada interjected as Tanaka tried to calm down, "With all due respect Sir, why is this even a priority? The Lakon takeover has been revoked and the company is now safely in the hands of the Alliance. We should just leave it to Inter..."

Gerry raised a hand, the two of them fell silent. Neither seemed convinced but they were quiet for the moment. Gerry leaned forward, clasping his hands together on the desk. "I don't leave jobs half done." Gerry looked between the two of them, "Something still isn't right about this whole thing. They caught Rochester and immediately threw him in a cell and sentenced him. No trial, no investigation. Nothing."

Gerry raised a hand and scratched his cheek, "Someone is doing damage control, Rochester surely has a lot of dirt on a lot of people. Tying up loose ends is what they're going for now, that's my best guess anyway." Gerry sighed, "If it was as simple as you guys are making it out she could have just handed herself in at an APF station. She's still hiding from something."

Gerry stood up from his seat and started walking to the door, the two Legionnaires shared a look before donning their helmets. Gerry gave an apologetic smile before walking onwards, "She's hiding, question is from what?"

Leaving the bar, JB headed back towards Citi Gateway's main concourse. He was going to head to the hangars until the news of the bombings started lighting up everyone's Comms Units.

JB watched as pilots all across the station scrambled to their ships, to aid their affiliates and communities.

His organisation's boss, Red Rose, had been in touch telling JB to send some of his squadron to assist in the aid effort. JB hadn't seen the point... there was no money to be made. He'd rowed with Rose a little until it seemed like she was about to pull rank, so he capitulated and sent a handful of his pilots in a couple of their T7s to help out. It would make things less awkward next time they met.

JB made it to the main concourse and leant onto the railings that looked out over the brightly lit parkway below, CMDRs racing around barking or receiving orders as they tried to make sense of the attacks.

JB took a swig from his hipflask and kept an eye on his Comms Unit, not sure what the recent attacks would mean for his organisation.

It had been a little more than an hour since Jubei finished his speech and was left alone. Batu seemed a little underwhelmed with Jubei's words. The older Imperial assured Batu that he'd understand in time and that's when he'd truly unlock his potential. A blip on Jubei's wrist computer indicated known people on the station, and he got an idea. Jubei suggested to Batu that he find a rather eccentric man in the InGaBa, an old friend that would allow the younger man to learn the Empire while having the freedom to do what he likes best. Batu seemed interested at the prospect and left Jubei sitting outside the front of The Olive Grove.

Again, more memories of friends long gone passed through his mind. More good memories than bad, he had ben lost in thought for a time.

"Time to do what I came to do," Jubei muttered to himself as he rose. The Imperial dusted himself off and headed inside the fabulous Olive Grove.

Soothing music fills the sweetly perfumed air of The Olive Grove's reception room. The lighting, like the music, is soft and subtle, all carefully designed to produce a calming effect on all who enter.

Standing behind the reception podium is Dalila-May Cummings. She wears a simple, low-cut peasant blouse of white polysatinester lace which bares her midriff, an elegantly patterned knee-length skirt and high heels. Around her head is tied an exotic-looking bandana, from which jet black hair carefully tumbles. Hoopy earrings adorn her ears, beads hang from her neck, gold rings decorate her fingers, and bangles encircle her wrists. Her makeup is sultry and sensuous, her eyes bright and alert.

Dalila-May looks up as a newcomer enters. She offers him a charming smile, then glances down at the newly-displayed information on her podium. Facial recognition software tells Dalila-May that the newcomer is one Jubei Himura, designated in The Olive Grove's records as an 'Esteemed Guest'. The dates of his previous visits are also shown, and Dalila-May notes that it has been many months since the last one.

"Greetings to you," says Dalila-May in a friendly, sing-song voice. "Welcome to The Olive Grove. Your pleasure is our pleasure. How may we help you today?"
