Elite roleplay: Citi Gateway

CITI GATEWAY

The Orbis station is a center of activity. Within the station a myriad of places can be found.
  • The Warrens: Where the poor plebs of the station live. It's is a breeding ground for the most unscrupulous. Keep an eye on your wallet when traversing the corridors of these areas.
  • Habitation Complex: For those workers and pilots that can afford it, this area provides closer to 1G gravity for more earth like living.
  • Commerce Divison: and Administration Where the larger corporations make their home. Station administration can be found here.
  • Industrial Complex: Where industry manufactures their various goods.
  • Entertainment: District Bars, theaters and night clubs, tattoo parlors and other establishments can be found vying for a commanders credits in exchange for a bit of fun.
  • Station Security: A high tech brig used to house law breakers until they can be tried, and or deported off station.
  • Medical Ward: Where commanders can get patched up, enhanced, or fix existing cybernetics.

General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

Oh, shit. I've opened an old wound. This woman is evidently more vulnerable than she tries to let on. Time to soften the tone, Jemine...

"I see. You don't do it for yourself, but because you have a family to support. I understand that, honestly I do. But there are other ways of making money. Legal ways."

This is certainly a turn up for the books. I actually feel sorry for her...
10 Nov 2016, 12:19pm
Kyla relaxed her demeanour.

She was *not* supposed to see that side of me.

"The Legal ways barely paid for food and gas, and gods help me if I ever had to repair any serious damage. You don't understand, Jem, once you get a taste for the black market, once you don't have to worry so much about how you're going to fix that leaky fuel line, it's hard to go back."

Kyla's confident smirk returned to her face. "Though, I'll admit it, I do enjoy the rush of swooping into a station undetected, or outrunning the cops and losing them in a planet ring."
11 Nov 2016, 12:52am
Just when I thought we were making progress, she throws up that wall again...

"You're right, Kyla. I don't understand about the black market. But I do understand about obsession. It starts one day without you realising, like an itch. You scratch it, but it doesn't go away. So you scratch it some more, and you keep on scratching, day after day, until it bleeds.

"When that day arrives it's already too late. You've already begun to rely upon the pain, and you don't worry so much about how much it hurts. You just keep scratching, and it's too hard to go back. But the itch is still there, tearing away at you.

"So what do you do, hmm? What do you do to deal with the pain? You pretend to enjoy it, that's what. And before you know it, you forget you're pretending. And that's when it's got you.

"Then one day you wake up and realise the truth, and that is the most dangerous day of all. Because that's the day you start running."

Which of us am I talking about here?
11 Nov 2016, 8:20pm
"Obsessions?!" Kyla fumed, "this isn't obession, it's fraking survival! What the frak do you know?" Her expression was visibly agitated, fighting between a mix of anger and sadness.
What is she trying to achieve here?! What am *I* trying to achieve here?

Kyla attempted to regain her confident smirk, noticing that she was receiving looks from passers-by after raising her voice. "I don't pretend to enjoy it either. It's what I do, and it's what I am good at. You may not like it, Jem, but it's a cruel 'verse out there, and we have to find our own ways to survive."

"That's precisely what I mean! You are so obsessed with smuggling as a means to survive that you won't consider any alternatives."

I'm obviously not going to change her mind about that...

"Look, I know it's a cruel 'verse. And you're right, we do what we must to get by. Believe me, I'm no stranger to that myself, and I'm far from perfect..."

Don't go there, Jemine. Don't reopen your own wounds yet again...

"All right, so the legal ways may not pay as much, but at least I don't go through life looking over my shoulder all the time. I fully accept that you're good at what you do, because you've told me so. But what happens when your luck runs out? When you don't make it past the starport scan, or when you're not quite quick enough to lose the cops? How will you support your family when you're in prison? If you think that can't happen, then you must be either stubborn or stupid.

"And I certainly don't think you're stupid."

But I do think you're afraid of something. I can see it in your eyes...

As the door clicked shut behind her Lilith took in her surroundings. Typical Doctors office, really. Filing cabinets lined the rear wall, desk in the middle, offset to one side, computer on, probably hasn't been switched off in months, Doctors were busy people after all. Not that the computer was of any interest to her, she needed a lab coat to change into and maybe some papers in case she needed to create a distraction of some sort.

The coat was easy, there was a spare one hanging up on some hooks by the door. Standard practice really, never a great idea to meet a new patient covered in blood or vomit. Never mind the health concerns, you'll probably scare the patient to death. Now, the papers, they needed to look busy. Blank pages would be far too obvious, so tearing them out of a notebook was a definite no go.

Grabbing the lab coat, Lilith pulled on her jumper and threw the jacket over herself. Making a point to close it up to hide the hole in the shoulder and hopefully the darker patch on the front a back that signified the blood stain. Then she made her way round the desk, found nothing on the surface and so began turning her attention to the drawers in search of anything useful.

Finding a binder, she pulled it out. Blank discharge forms, those would do. She unclipped several from the holders but kept them in the binder before turning in the chair to pull her boots on. The right one pulled on easy enough, but in oulling her left one on, her shoulder cried and she leant back in the chair a bit too far, bumping against the desk. The movement causing the controls to shift and the screen to light up. The sudden change in brightness drew her attention and she found herself staring at a a face. Long black hair, red lipstick, she was a pretty little thing, although sleeping. She turned back to do her laces up and once finished she turned to push the chair back and stand up.

Looking again at the photo on the computer. Yes, she was quite pretty, but looked different in this picture. Yet, eerily familiar. Wait... This was a different picture... A different woman... Then it changed again and she found herself staring at an even more familiar face... Hers....

*What... The.... Fuck???* Grabbing the mouse controls she began flicking through the slideshow. *How many women are there here??* It was a very surreal experience, staring at a face that was both hers and yet, not hers. Unsure how to react, she simply stared at the screen slack jawed.

After a moment, her head cleared and she grabbed into her bag and pulled out a memory drive. A few clicks later and all the photos were copied onto the drive. No way this doctor was getting away with this. Pulling open a few more drawers she found an ID belonging to Dr Glaboski. At least that explained why he was constantly avoiding her gaze, shame really, he'd seemed nice enough.

Still unsure about how to punish him she just decided to leave a message. Something subtle, but clear. She was needing to take off the hospital tag anyways, and she used some tape to stick it to the edge of the screen and scribbled a few words onto a small bit of paper. *That should be clear enough, providing pigs can read, anyway* she thought to herself.

Then she got up, stuffed her gown in her bag and crept out of the door again, holding the binder tightly against her waist and the bag over her shoulder.
13 Nov 2016, 10:35am
Kyla looked to the ground again. As much as I hate to admit it, she's slightly right there. What happens if I do get caught?

Her lips curled to a smile. Simple. Don't get caught.

"I'm sure I'll be fine, Jem. I'm sure you know how cold the Diamondback runs." She paused, looking back up at Jemine. "And yeah, I am stubborn, and I'll happily admit that. This kind of life makes you that way. You have to be persistent or you slip up, and that is when the authorities catch up with you."

She sighed. "What alternatives do I have anyway? I already told you I could barely scrape by through legal means, and I'm not a killer, so that rules out reaping or merc work. So, what? Just go back to truck driving, earn frak all and then I can't help my family again? If my father wasn't such a wanker and didn't bugger off the way he did, maybe I would consider going legit, but it's just not viable, Jem. Only a select few get rich off trucking."

Donning her newfound lab coat, Lilith made her way down the corridoor. Once again, the Doctors and Nurses paid her no heed, being too busy and distracted to notice her, or even care. But she still needed one more thing to aid in her escape. The front door wouldn't be wise, she suspected that security would be looking out for her the instant they realised she was gone. So she kept her eyes peeled open for a possible mark.

It didn't take long, black hair was fairly common so Lilith steered herself towards a female Doctor walking towards her. Pretending not to see her she collided with the woman and dropped her binder, allowing the loose pages to spill free from the folder.

"I'm so sorry!" Cried the woman

"No I'm sorry, it's fine" replied Lilith, bending to start gathering the papers

The two continued exchanging apologies as they colected the papers together but during the dustraction, the Doctor didn't notice Lilith steal the ID card pinned to her chest.

Once all the mess had been cleared, Lilith smiled, said her thanks, and hurried off towards the staff exit before the Doctor could realise what just happened.
14 Nov 2016, 10:47am
Hopeless...

"Kyla, you are like the proverbial horse that can be led to water but not made to drink."

Papa...

"That was one of my papa's favourite sayings. He said a lot of things, bless him. Another one was, "It takes all sorts of people to play the same game". I used to think he was referring to games like Monopoly or Topflight Treacherous, but he was actually talking about real life."

Don't cry...

"You and I are simply different sorts, and that's all there is to it."

So why the fuck do I envy her?
15 Nov 2016, 1:12am
Dr. Glaboski had finished the emergency surgery. The patient's body was rejecting the cybernetic implant, and in this case it was a rather necessary life giving organ. He finished washing up and had just returned to his office. He doffed his lab coat and sat into his high backed chair. He swiveled around to face his monitor.

His face fell and turned white a sheet. He ripped the note off the terminal and woke the computer up.

On the screen was an image of a patient he had turned into Susan. His heart raced. He was found out. It was his most recent subject. The Jane Doe that was brought in. Was it coincidence that the image on the screen was her? He ran through his memory. The last image he looked at, was the first one he ever did. Someone went through these! Then he spotted it. The ID bracelet.

"Dr Glaboski?" It was a nurse.
"Get out!" He yelled at her. She did as she was told. He turned and called up security. The guard at the woman's room didn't answer.

Security soon showed up to her now vacant room, helping the one that was unconscious. They made a call.

"Code Black. Repeat. Code Black." Came the voice on the overhead. Doors around the medical facility closed and locked themselves. Nurses and workers not actively engaged with patients stood at all doors interlocking the facility. On monitors set in the walls, an image of Lilith's face popped up.

Kyla sighed. "The proverbial water was a dried up, dirty pond by the time I got there. But let me ask you something, Jem."

She paused, noticing the change in Jemine's expression.

"Why does it bother you so much, the fact that I smuggle for a living? I don't hurt anyone. I never touch slaves. The worst that could come of it is that someone smokes a little too much Onionhead and ruins their night out."

Kyla's posture relaxed a little.

"So why would I drink the muddied water when there is wine right next to it?"
15 Nov 2016, 3:54pm
This bitch has an answer for everything, doesn't she?!!

"Why am I bothered? I'll tell you why I'm bothered! I'm bothered because it's common criminals like you who get to take the wine, and decent, hard working people like me have to make do with the bloody muddy water!"
15 Nov 2016, 9:07pm
I knew it!

Kyla's smug grin returned once more. "And there it is... You are jealous! So it's not because you're a goodie two-shoes, it's because you envy me. Well, sweet cheeks, I am not without empathy. I've already divulged my situation so I can't really rub it in your face. I'll be honest, sometimes I envy the truck drivers that don't look over their shoulders all the time, but it is what it is."

Without warning, the drunkard from earlier bumped into Kyla's shoulder on his way past again, causing her to stumble. Startled, she turned toward the man.

"Are you fraking serious? Watch where you are going you drunken arsehole!"

The man swayed and faced her. "Oh hey beautiful," he slurred, "can I get ya ladies a drink?"

Without hesitation, Kyla reached under her jacket, pulling out her pistol and aimed it at the inebriated man.
"Call me beautiful again, I dare you," she threatened, her voice venomous.

He flinched and attempted to stumble away. "Alright, alright, fuck! I'm goin'. You're not my type anyway."

She reholstered her gun as he hobbled away into the crowd, banging in to more people on his way.

"I swear to Gods, some people."

Christ!

The presentation of a firearm across the way from him caused Isaiah's fight-or-flight response to kick in. He'd been sitting back, enjoying a drink outside, just minding his own business when he saw the woman draw her gun and point it at some transient drunk. His shooting hand had already gone to the grip of his own weapon by the time she'd reholstered, and he breathed for a moment to calm himself.

Relaxing getaway, my ass.

It wasn't like he was looking for trouble, even though he was technically looking for it. Condition yellow all the time, even on a short vacation like this. Satisfied that the moment had passed, he went back to his drink and tried to settle down, but still kept an eye on the two women from a distance.
16 Nov 2016, 9:58am
Oh, for the love of Gaia, she even carries a gun...

"Is that a typical example of how you deal with people who irritate you? Pull a gun on them? I suppose I should count myself lucky that I'm not lying on this deck in a pool of my own blood by now!"

Careful, Jemine. You don't want to go giving her any ideas...

"Keep that thing out of sight, or you'll get us both arrested. I'd rather not spend any more time in prison, if it's all the same to you."

Oops. Let's hope she didn't catch that...
