Elite roleplay: Off station

OFF STATION

Your ship, deep space, anything that is not happening inside the Citi Gateway or Ingaba...

General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

"I, am... going to guess, this was, the NMLA. This... is why, I fought, them, back, then. I, think. My logs, say, at least."

Certainly not a memory I really had recovered yet. Or cared that much to.

"If, that, has a recording... play it. Better to hear, now, than... wait, even longer."

I did keep looking further down the corridor, just in case. Couldn't discount a remnant cell of those idiots, or Azimuth quietly moving in after the total abandonment of the facility.

I snatched the device and swallowed hard, forcing myself to look away. “We need to find out who did this,” I spat, my resolve hardening like steel. “And if they’re not dead already, we’ll make sure they pay.”

As I examined the device in my hand, I noticed it had once been attached to something. Partially bent loops still had threads hanging from them, so it was probably sewn onto something. Maybe a hidden recording device from the woman’s suit?

I flipped the recording device over in my hand and saw that it was neatly turned off. Maybe there was still some juice left in this thing.

“There might still be power in this. Let’s give it a shot.”

With that, I switched the little device on. Static followed, and I thought the recording or the device itself was probably toast, when suddenly, noises and voices started coming through.

[Sound of footsteps approaching]

Cassia Verda: "Ah, Agent Kael, how the mighty fall. Do you feel it now, all broken and gasping? The cold grip of death closing in on you? It's music to my ears. You know, this is for John Tyburn. He was worth a hundred of you."

Lyra Kael coughs, her voice weak: "Cassia... you've become a monster. Even John Tyburn knew... he knew... you'd go too far. Too far..."

Cassia Verda: [Laughing] "Too far? There's no such thing as too far anymore. The Empire took everything from us, and now I'm taking it back, piece by screaming piece."

Lyra Kael: "You're... you're mad..."

Cassia Verda: "Mad? No, no, no. I am clarity incarnate. I am the retribution they begged for, the vengeance they feared. And you, dear Lyra, you're the message I'm sending straight to their core."

Lyra Kael: "You won't... win. There's always... someone to stop you... The Empire... is eternal. Your... chaos is temporary."

Cassia Verda: "Eternal? Let's test that theory, shall we? Starting with you."

[Sound of a device powering up]

Lyra Kael: "You won't... get away with this..."

Cassia Verda: "Oh, but I already have. Our movement has friends, even in Imperial Intelligence... so no one will come here because of your little message. All you did manage to do was warn me of your presence..." [Laughter]

Lyra Kael: "No... that can't... be..."

Cassia Verda: "Farewell, Agent Kael. May your spirit find more freedom in death than it ever did in service to the Empire."

[Chilling laughter fades with the sound of a bolt gun firing]

[Noises of the device being switched off. Then noises of it crackling to life again. Cassia’s voice, low and filled with a dangerous edge, can be heard.]

To those who dared claim the body, and to everyone who hears this, listen up. This is Cassia Verda. John’s death won’t be in vain. Oh no, you’ll pay dearly. You’ll all pay for what you’ve done. Every injustice, every life lost, will be avenged tenfold. You and your damned royals think you can crush us, silence us, but you’re dead wrong. We’re stronger than you can even imagine, and we’re not backing down. Not now, not ever.

We’ll go underground, vanish from your sight, and keep preparing. One day we’ll strike from the shadows, and when we do, you won’t know what hit you. I promise we’ll meet again, and when we do, it’ll be your turn to run for your life."

"Hm. I, guess, we know... who might be here."

Not for certain, given that a few years had elapsed, but it seemed likely enough. I looked at my companion.

"We should, go deeper? Find out, more. If, these... people - " I hesitated to use that word for the crazed nutjob from that recording - exactly the kind of person driven too far, and mad, by desire for revenge. " - are, still here, somebody... needs, to stop, them. So... are you, up?"

I sure was. With a bit of luck, we could kill two evils at their root, here. Or at the very least, find more clues to one of them, if not where to find both, and put an end to them. Then Azimuth's ridiculous Dawnbreaker proposal. I wasn't even sure how they would get the power to 'drive' such a weapon with, or at least, fire it frequently.

“Holy shit. That was… uncanny. So, this must be Agent Kael. Looks like she didn’t manage to complete her mission. Gotta give her respect for trying, though. You really don’t want this Helix stuff in the hands of that terrorist.”

I tilted my head thoughtfully, trying to relieve the tension in my neck muscles from both the previous stress and the weight of my helmet.

“I’m with you on this one. We need to follow this lead, but it’s old. Seems like no one’s been here for years to recover the agent or even hear the message, like we just did. And I think we know why - her message from the ship got intercepted somehow. But it makes me wonder if…”

The second encryption protecting the location of the Azimuth facility in the other messages kept nagging at me. Perhaps the agent had suspected that her communication was not completely secure, as the location had been double encrypted and the sender's name had been removed. But if that was the case, where was the key? Where would I keep it?

Hesitantly and carefully, I searched the outer pockets of the agent’s suit but found nothing interesting. I was about to give up when my eyes fell on her belt. The buckle, adorned with the shape of a stylized sun, looked pretty bulky. I decided to take a closer look and discovered that the buckle was made of several modular parts. It had taken a hit, maybe during the fight with that terrorist, which had caused a gap to appear.

“I think the buckle is hollow.”
04 Jul 2024, 11:13pm
"Well, then... open, it.", I prompted her.

"Though, even if, that gives us... something, we should, continue, looking - into here, anyway. If, that... Helix, container, is, still here... we should destroy it. Or, if it is, gone... find out, wherever it, went."
04 Jul 2024, 11:33pm
“No doubt. If this Helix stuff is here, we definitely need to figure out a way to neutralize it.”
I ran my fingers over the belt buckle, trying to find an opening mechanism.

“And I think we should stick to our original idea and look for that data processor. Seems like the smartest move to get ahead.”

I had just finished my sentence when the belt buckle popped open with a slight jerk. Inside was…
“…a note??? I was expecting a keycard or something.”

I unfolded the note. In the same uneven handwriting as on the wall next to the corpse, it read:

Clever. But I was first.
04 Jul 2024, 11:40pm
I snatched that note quite abruptly, without asking or warning, read it, and... tore it to pieces.

"Smug idiot. Will not be so smug, when I put a bullet, through your stupid face."

I was just about done with this stupid game and quite annoyed, thus I began to march forward at a surprising pace, though remaining attentive. But my patience for "cat and mouse" was already not very high, and someone on the wrong end of one of my guns was going to hear it now.
04 Jul 2024, 11:52pm
“That crazy terrorist is really getting on my nerves,” I muttered, my voice dripping with irritation. “But at least it wasn’t a bomb…”

I took a deep breath, the reality of the situation sinking in. The thought made my stomach churn. Maybe I’d been a bit too reckless... I decided it was time to be more cautious from now on. We were dealing with someone who shouldn’t be underestimated. In that regard, the note might have been a mistake, serving as a warning that our opponent loved to play games.

“Whoa,” I said, holding up a hand as my partner moved ahead. “Not so fast, and watch out. I wouldn’t be surprised if there were some traps.”

I scanned the way ahead, every sense on high alert.

“Where’s the data processor?” I asked my companion.
05 Jul 2024, 12:01am
"Up ahead.", I replied, pointing ahead... trying to moderate the impulses that were making me want to storm ahead, risks be damned. Apparently, if I wanted, I could move surprisingly quickly for someone with my curvature.

"Somewhere, to the right. Might... should, be marked... if, the holo panel, has not failed."

The second half of that sentence was in an unamused, dry tone, because it was a very realistic possibility. And, since I was seemingly not opposed to using it if necessary, I checked for traps or hidden devices using the different senses and vision spectrums which were not available to an ordinary human. If it helped me live through nonsense like this, it was just as well to not ignore it.

So far, nothing. I kept some attention diverted toward signatures of electronic devices, though, those of the station aside. And hoped the implant had integrated itself into my brain well enough again by now that it would 'tell' me if it picked anything out of the ordinary up. With the knowledge of the nutjob - who was an idiot in all but intelligence, annoyingly - in hand, I expected something to try and stop us from accessing the data processor, first, before anything, anywhere else.

Hopefully, my companion's suit had sensors just as advanced as those on her ship, because those could potentially spot something I missed. For all the Thargoids had done to turn me into something not-quite-human on the biological level, organic fallibility was not one thing they'd removed. And, in a way, I was glad for that.
05 Jul 2024, 11:15am
With one last glance at the tragic figure, I walked on and followed the corridor that turned right. I moved cautiously, the flickering light casting eerie shadows on the walls as I scanned the area with my suit's sensors. We passed a series of smaller rooms, most with their doors ajar or wide open, allowing us to see inside. Some rooms looked like small offices, others like meeting rooms for couples, with seating and even a bed.

“Nothing yet,” I murmured, my voice barely audible over the radio of our helmets. “But stay alert. This place gives me the creeps.”

Continuing down the corridor, every step brought us closer to our goal - and to whatever dangers lay in wait. As we finally approached a junction with a lift in the middle, a beep echoed in my helmet. The sensors had detected something - a faint electronic signature of unknown origin, almost imperceptible. I raised a hand, signaling my companion to stop.

“Hold on. there’s something up ahead. Could be a trap.”
05 Jul 2024, 1:52pm
"Hm ..."

I 'scanned' the walls, and the floor - relative floor, with this being zero G - and did notice 'something' - somewhere near the elevator, or maybe the alternative option of the stairs. No idea what it could've been... but I did have some idea on how to "test" it. One that involved various bits of debris and other stuff floating around.

"May want to, back off. This could, explode."

Assuming this wasn't a malfunctioning power conduit or something else like that, I hoped that throwing something in front of it to set off a proximity sensor would do it. If it worked off of heat detection, that would be more problematic.

I grabbed a floating object and began to walk back toward the last corner we'd passed, expecting that to be far enough - if it wasn't, then whatever device was over there would probably just rip the corridor we were just in to shreds and either make us find another path... or create one. Once around the corner, I triggered my shield and got ready to toss my improvised trap detection/prevention device down the corridor, hoping for the best. Only one more glance toward the other woman, to make sure there weren't any valid objections to be had to my idea.
05 Jul 2024, 4:43pm
I nodded in agreement as I also backed away to use the corner as cover and to give my companion the space she needed. The tension in the air was palpable, every second stretched out as she sent the object on its journey down the corridor. I was curious to see if anything would happen.

At first, the object flew gracefully in the zero-G environment, turning as it went. For a moment... nothing. Then suddenly there was a bright flash through the corridor. The moving object had triggered something, but it wasn't an explosion - instead, a battery of lasers extended quickly from the ceiling directly in front of the lift entrance and shot the object to pieces.

"That could have been worse," I muttered, peering round the corner to assess the situation. It seemed we had found the source that my suit's sensors had reacted to.

"Can you hack into this?" I asked as my eyes scanned the surrounding area for more threats.
05 Jul 2024, 4:53pm
"Uh... maybe? Not sure, if remotely. Would need, to accept, external connections."

I gave things a quick thought.

"But, then, this... has, to be connected, to power, somewhere. Maybe, we could track, that? If, your fancy scanner, can. Unless, it leads right past, it. Then... well."

I pulled a grenade off my belt, and rolled it in my right hand. Thrown right at the ceiling, it would probably take the laser defense system out with it. Wasn't the most ideal though, in case we wanted to use the elevator, which could get damaged... but then, that itself would probably also be rigged, so I didn't feel like chancing it.

But it would still work as a roundabout way of "hacking" it. By removing the object which required the hacking in the first place. Explosively.
05 Jul 2024, 5:12pm
“Well, I guess that could pass as a tampering attempt…” I grinned broadly as I saw the grenade in Kasumi’s right hand.

The situation was far from ideal. After the laser battery had descended from the ceiling, it slowly swung back and forth, covering the entire width of the corridor. I figured it would eventually deactivate if it didn’t find any more targets, so there wasn’t much time to think. Still, I risked a quick scan, hoping to find a more elegant and, above all, less conspicuous solution.

But we had no luck - whoever designed this system when the station was built knew their craft. The thing was clearly aimed at riot control, and the trap in front of the elevator was sickly perfect. 'Medical research centre', my ass. Of course the power supply, which my sensors easily detected now after the laser battery activated, led from the battery through the ceiling towards the elevator. Not good for us.

“Give it a try, but watch out for those lasers!”
05 Jul 2024, 5:41pm
"Ok."

I stepped out after attaching my rifle to the wall, into the middle of the corridor - width-wise - priming the grenade.

"Hey! Over here, big stupid!"

The laser trap reacted by emitting a "Target detected" noise, the same moment at which I tossed the grenade... and quickly rushed back into cover as I was met with a hailstorm of laser fire, but it only dented the shields before I was out of the firing line again.

Had to hope the explosive'd made it through that mess while the machine was distracted with a much bigger - and living - target. We'd know in a second or two...
