Elite roleplay: Off station

OFF STATION

Your ship, deep space, anything that is not happening inside the Citi Gateway or Ingaba...

General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

I still had something to say about the comforts of the metal container and the luxury accommodation in the cargo hold in general, after I finally figured out Kasumi's words, thanks to the helmet headset being pressed against my ears, thus providing some vibrations. My personal cabin lacked many things you'd normally expect to be there when riding as a passenger, even in the most simplest conditions. And one of them was air. Not that I was particularly upset about such a spartan transportation method, yet that fact has made replying impossible. At least vocally. And my elbows were so tightly pressed against the walls that it was also impossible to reach the pocket where my communicator was placed, to reply in text. There was an option to reply in Byte-code or in even more ancient Morse, by knocking or rubbing the helmet microphone with my finger hoping to cause vibrations and therefore noises, yet, sadly, I didn't remember the signal sequences. So I just thumped it a few times hoping that would be enough for her to understand the nature of the predicament I was in.

"Ok, ok, I get it. The accommodation needs work. It will be improved next time."

"... but I did offer you the luxury option in the shipping container. Anyway, it's time to get this going... properly. "

With that, I initiated the jump sequence, zipping into Witch Space a few seconds later. Destination, Azimuth, my missing friend, and probably a lot of explosions. Or at least bullets, but most likely both.

I wanted to make a point, and those bastards were about to get one hell of a demonstration.

Author's note - From this point on, the events will be continued in a log entry. Should be published in a few days (from time of writing this post)... for anyone not catching this 'live' or within the few days before the entry is posted, I'll retroactively link it below this text, in the quote box.

Crab Sector DL-Y d9 - STATION X - Concourse bar
Approx 7Kly from Sol
Station X, was there any other station this side of the core farther out, she was pretty sure this was it. The literally end of civilization,
What grandfather would have called the boonies. What kind of people came out here other then her kind she mused to herself.
At least the nebula was a sight to behold.
Anri sat slumped over her drink stirring it mindlessly as she scrolled thru a datapad of news feeds, she sighed and hit refresh as she took a sip.
The screen blinked and at long last it was a new headline, a whole new story it had been several hours since anything had come up.
Utopia was in the news lately with their call for materials and data, which had met only a bare minimum of its hoped for supplies.
Her eyes darted across the news feed, taking in all the details until she read about the Acheron interface.
"That son of a bitch", she whispered.
Nothing she could do about it now, she thought to herself and simply scrolled back down the news feed.

Continued from here.

The Tear of Raxxla floated majestically in the void, its imperial-white hull gleaming under the distant starlight. As the crew completed their final checks, I stood on the bridge, my gaze fixed on the holographic display showing the nearby carrier, Abode.

“Open a channel to the Abode,” I ordered. The communications officer nodded, and a moment later, the call sign of the carrier appeared on the screen.

"Commander Goto,” I began, “is everything prepared for our journey to the Thor’s Helmet Sector? The Tear of Raxxla has finished loading Tritium and spare parts. All systems are green. We’ve completed our pre-flight checks, and the crew is ready. Supplies are fully stocked, and the navigation charts are updated. We are ready to leave this system when you are."
19 Aug 2024, 5:25pm
“Incoming transmission.”, EDI announced, pulling me out of the blissful laziness of floating around in zero G with nothing to do. I grumbled in a mildly annoyed manner after a bit of silence, then answered properly.

“Play it.”

"Commander Goto, is everything prepared for our journey to the Thor’s Helmet Sector? The Tear of Raxxla has finished loading Tritium and spare parts. All systems are green. We’ve completed our pre-flight checks, and the crew is ready. Supplies are fully stocked, and the navigation charts are updated. We are ready to leave this system when you are."

Of course, I could not leave that unanswered. I took a deep breath before replying, however.

“I was, just being lazy.”, I said first, in a theatrically sad tone. “Give me, a few minutes. Then, I will be ready. So, take… both, carriers, or only one?”

I was reasonably certain mine had the necessary reserves to cover the distance to the nebula and back, but it seemed a little pointless to bring two, unless I needed more equipment than I was willing to store on somebody else’s carrier… which I kind of doubted, but also had no way of knowing ahead of our arrival and investigation.

Also still spoke a bit slowly, but at least the sentences were coherent… that was something I couldn’t do much about at the moment, hoping it would improve itself over the next few months. Doing things that tested my brain did appear to help, but not over the duration of a single day.

I was a little distracted by irrational biological needs, too, which would need ‘sorting’ before I committed to anything else. So I just left the channel muted on outgoing, after dropping a muttered remark to my “title”, just loud enough to be audible, and with a tone that suggested I was not particularly fond of it.

“Commander Goto.”

I still had to shake my head at it… because it was not part of my identity at all, and considering the average pilot operating under that banner… happy to have it that way. Then back to the distraction that was my big, curvy body.
19 Aug 2024, 6:22pm
The communications officer turned pale when he heard the murmured remark about addressing Kasumi as ‘Commander’ before the transmission was ended. I, on the other hand, grinned broadly and waved it off.

“Not worth mentioning,” I said to the officer. “Commanding a carrier comes with certain privileges. Some folks are sticklers for protocol and proper titles when they’re on duty. Others, not so much, and then there are those…” I nodded towards the display of the Abode and rolled my eyes slightly. “Well, I think you get what I’m saying…”

Then I ordered the channel to the Abode to be reopened.

“I don’t care if we jump with two carriers or not, we’re loaded with everything we could possibly need, just in case the journey does not end at the nebula. You might want to consider if you need anything other than your Phantom. We might run into pirates down there, and we’re definitely going to encounter corporate security. How friendly that turns out to be is anyone’s guess.”
19 Aug 2024, 7:37pm
I took a bit longer before I answered this time, partly from still waking up from a nap.

“I, guess, I could just… bring a, combat ship. But, prefer the Phantom. Has weapons, anyway.”

That, and I did not want to waste my time fighting corporate security in space instead of tearing down the lab from which Helix originated, wherever it was exactly in that nebula. I had thought about it, and a starting point of shipping did not mean it had to be in that system, or whatever else was there.

“Think, I am coming, to you. Easier to organize.”

First, I needed to get myself looking appropriately decent, not floating about as a lazy human with big, fat curves and in her underwear. Nevermind the total mess which my hair was at the moment. But that would only be a few moments… and perhaps it was not a terrible idea to have something like my Fer-de-Lance temporarily transferred over. Otherwise, I would be leaving my Phantom’s loadout as was, with its travel loadout including a fuel scoop. In case we wanted to go somewhere further without the carrier.

But I still needed to get myself in order, so on the next bump into a wall with my big ‘shock absorber’, I pushed myself over to the lockers with my clothing. Needed to go for a bit of change after yesterday’s adventures with the NMLA remnant, anyway, and hadn’t swapped those clothes out yet.
19 Aug 2024, 8:17pm
“Well, you know the drill. There’s always room for a few more ships and some gear. Catch you later.”

With that, I cut the connection and thought about treating myself to a good meal and an even better drink. After all, one should never embark on a major operation on an empty stomach. You never know what could go wrong.

“Let me know as soon as Kasumi is on board,” I instructed the bridge crew. “I’ll be in my cabin.”

Yes, I actually had an appetite for something again. I took that as a good sign after the thing with Palin and those strange artifacts had really got to me and ruined my day.
19 Aug 2024, 8:29pm
As usual, I fought to get myself into a shirt, mostly the result of wanting something snug around the lower body yet fitting for the breast as well, instead of basically wearing a bag on my lower body. The pants, comparatively, were easy... even if they still required a little convincing around the hips. Then followed the fight into some kind of suit. The Artemis again, in this case, since it was my preferred one while I didn't need something a little sturdier.

After that, I went off into the cockpit, stretching a bit more along the way, and took off for my companion's carrier. Descended straight into the hangar from there, ordered my Fer-de-Lance over after ensuring it had the appropriate loadout - an odd beam laser in the huge hardpoint plus four plasma accelerators - and then got to the business of satisfying my belly, which was giving me signs of wanting food. Hadn't eaten anything in the morning, anyway, sleeping almost right past it... and then finding I needed a nap again already, early in the afternoon, I had not gotten anything into myself except water for today, yet.

Probably would have enough time while the carrier prepared to jump. Or at the very least get sufficient time to save anything from flying all over my ship's living quarters from the sudden acceleration.
19 Aug 2024, 9:19pm
I had just enjoyed a good meal and was mulling over recent events when there was a knock at my cabin door.

“Come in,” I called out.

A young officer entered hesitantly. “Commander, I’m to inform you that Commander Goto has arrived in the hangar. However, she’s not leaving her ship.”

I eyed the somewhat shy and stiff-looking person mischievously. “Alright, let’s drop the ‘Commander’ bit real quick…”

The young officer looked a bit relieved. “Yes, Ma’am…”

I interrupted her, trying to keep a straight face. “…for Kasumi, but as for me…”

The officer blushed and hurried to salute. “Yes, Commander!”

“Good grief… you’re still wet behind the ears, aren’t you? Fresh out of the Navy, I bet? Just call me Haraldsen… whenever I hear ‘Commander’ or ‘Ma’am,’ I always look around to see if someone else is behind me.” I grinned at the new officer warmly.

“Now, have yourself a little drink…” I poured her some wine, “… there you go. Welcome aboard!”

I toasted her, and then we left the cabin together, heading towards the bridge, where I turned to the navigation officer. “Everything ready for departure?”

“All set. Awaiting your orders.”

“Alright then…” I glanced around at the gathered officers. “Let’s get this show on the road. Prepare for jump.”

Moments later, the orders were relayed, and all hatches were sealed.

I settled into my chair on the bridge and opened a channel to Kasumi. “Welcome aboard. Get ready for the jump. We’ll be off in a few minutes.”

The hum of the drive charging up was already audible, but it would still be a few minutes before the carrier was fully ready to jump.

I finished munching before I answered.

"Oh. Sure. Just, eating."

A brief pause followed as I quietly drank some fruit juice. I just hated it when everybody in a ten meter radius could hear somebody swallowing.

"Hope to, be done, before long." Mostly, because it looked unlikely that I would finish up before the jump, which itself only posed a momentary interruption to stuffing myself. "Will stay, on the ship, too. Unless, you want me, to meet your crew."

That was kind of an experience I could pass on, even if asked to. Because everybody would just be staring at my skin and how it looked as if my body was trying to get away from itself, especially on the lower half. Probably, anyway. I also still wasn't much one for social interaction.

“Stay put in your ship, I know you feel more comfortable there.”

The Tear of Raxxla geared up for its jump, the first of many that would take it towards the general direction of the well-known Guardian ruins. From there, it would head towards the nebula. The plan, as always, was to jump the carrier into a neighboring system of the actual target to appear as inconspicuous as possible. To maintain the carrier’s cover from any prying eyes, I also planned to send out a few ships to mine metals or Tritium near the carrier.

I shared this plan with Kasumi and kept her updated on all subsequent jumps of the carrier, which were all routine and uneventful. Soon, we were on the brink of the carrier’s final jump. I opened a channel to Kasumi once more.

“One last jump of the carrier, and we’ll be where we want to be. From there, we’ll continue in our personal ships as usual. Our final destination is Thor’s Helmet Sector FB-X c1-5 - there’s a known station there, registered to Thor Biometrics, a base inside an asteroid. The sector isn’t too far from the center of the bubble but remote enough to be rarely visited. There are security reports of occasional pirate activity in the area, but nothing extraordinary. All in all, we’re in the middle of nowhere, as they say. I thought we could pose as bounty hunters with our ships, which would give us a reason to be in the area, and then refuel at the publicly accessible station. Otherwise, hardly anyone comes by here by chance. Or do you have a better idea?”

In the meantime, I had tried to learn more about the Consortium, the name of an organization we had stumbled upon during our last mission. However, I hadn’t been able to find out much. Most of it was rumors and hearsay. It seemed to be an organization that operated largely in the shadows and was apparently more focused on larger economic projects. It was definitely not a group that a small-time commander would typically come into contact with; you had to be more at the level of trade fleets to be involved with them.

Thor Biometrics also remained largely a mystery to me. It seemed to be a company based in the security sector. At least half of all modern computers used their patented technology for authentication purposes. Otherwise, the company didn’t make much of a public appearance. Interestingly, their origin was the Thor system, which was considered uninhabited, with no stations at all. How could anything originate from there?

I informed Kasumi of the results of my research and was eager to hear her opinion.
20 Aug 2024, 2:19pm
"No, no better idea. Posing, as explorers... probably, would not work.", I answered. "At least, not, with our ships."

At best mine would pass for an escort out of populated space, or to the station in case of a pirate attack here. I'd finished with my food endeavor just about halfway through the carrier's route, and also had taken care of the relevant hygiene matters following that... brushing the teeth, mostly. That did at least leave me free to chat back as I lazily lounged around my ship's cabin, before the serious business started.

"So, you think... this Thor, company, is an Azimuth, front? May be. Do not know. I, think, we should, start looking."

I would prefer that over discussing hypotheticals or theories when we were basically right there, or would soon be, and could get our hands on some more tangible information.
20 Aug 2024, 4:26pm
“I'm not sure if Thor is an Azimuth front. Wasn’t that your theory? I just find it odd that the company’s origins are so mysterious. Never heard of anything coming from a system without stations. Well, hopefully, we’ll know more soon. Get ready, after the last jump, it’s go time.”

I handed over control of the carrier to my first officer, reminding him once more that I wanted mining operations for camouflage purposes. I wasn’t too worried about the carrier, which was more than capable of defending itself, but I thought it best if the ship wasn’t directly linked to our operations.

Then, already suited up in my Maverick, I made my way to my midnight-black Mamba to wait for the last jump and then leave the ship with Kasumi. Just as I arrived, the preparations for the final jump were complete, and the charging of the jump drive could be heard.

It would not be long now.
20 Aug 2024, 4:46pm
"System, without stations, does not mean that, there is nothing, there.", I replied, doubting that the system was actually uninhabited or empty... but anything there just not listed in public registries.

Being pointed here, however, from a project Azimuth was working on... that said enough to me about its actual owners. The jump then initiated, and as soon as the carrier was on the other side, coming out of lockdown, I moved my big backside into the cockpit and put in a course to the Thor's Helmet system in question while the ship went to the surface, in preparation for launch.

"Do you, think we will, go on the ground, again? Currently, not wearing a suit, for fighting. Will have, to change, if we do."
