Elite roleplay: Off station

OFF STATION

Your ship, deep space, anything that is not happening inside the Citi Gateway or Ingaba...

General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

CLAIR DOCK;
TJAKIRI SYSTEM

From a luxurious observation lounge atop one of Clair Dock's outer spires, Marra Morgan watches a solitary Fer-de-Lance make its approach, the matte-black paintwork softening the reflection of the nearby type-T star.

A burst of static crackles from a comms point on the lounge's table, breaking the silence of her vigil. A woman's voice, heavy with a Gallic accent, follows; "Fer-de-Lance No Data Available approaches, maîtresse,"

"I know," replies Marra softly, "Make him welcome and bring him up."

Her eyes adjust their focus, settling on her own reflection in the viewport's glass. She smooths out her long black kimono and adjusts the red sash around her waist. Leaning in closer, she inspects the heavy make-up around her eyes and lips, grimacing at the scarring that it masks.

"Fucking bitch," she hisses under her breath, running her hands through her hair and bringing it forward to fall either side of her face in a glossy dark curtain.

Finally satisfied with her appearance, she turns to the lounge's only other occupant; her gargantuan personal guard, Idris.

"Stay outside, I don't want you intimidating my guest," her lips curl into a smile as she steps towards him, placing her hand on his huge armoured chest. "Peidiwch â phoeni amdanaf," she whispers in Cambrian, their native language.

A low, mechanic growl rumbles deep from within the monolithic beast, nodding his understanding and turning on his heel to exit the room.

Marra pours herself a glass of wine, selects a chaise-longue and relaxes, leaning back with her arm outstretched over the backrest, legs crossed elegantly.

"Of course I do," she says out loud, seemingly to someone despite being alone, "You would do the same, no?"

She smiles and sips her wine, waiting patiently for her guest.

"NFS No Data Available you are clear to dock at pad two, three.  Welcome to Clair Dock, Commander.  We hope you enjoy your stay."

"Acknowledged, control.  Happy to be here."  Phisto rolled his neck from left to right and sighed.  The trip from Eravate to Inara then out to Tjakiri wasn’t the most strenuous journey he’d ever taken, but he knew a shower and change of clothes would refresh him all the same.  Firing his vertical thrusters he pushed his Fer-De-Lance down in front of Clair Dock's entrance.  Rolling slightly to the right, keeping just enough pressure to stay aligned with station rotation, he throttled up to the local speed limit.  As the hum of the docking port shield rolled over him, he whistled low.

Phisto always appreciated the glossy, manicured interiors of high tech stations like Clair Dock.  Surprisingly, this one seemed to pulse with a raw sense of human energy in spite of all the spectacular lighting and clean, precise lines.  Was it just the reputation he'd heard whispered and hinted at playing with his perception or was something really there?  He tilted his head to the left in thought, and by extension rolled his ship in the same direction, bringing the belly in line with his assigned docking pad.  Drifting over a pair of sharp, dangerous looking spires rising from the station interior he deployed his landing gear and gently pulled back on the throttle, bringing his ship down with a delicate touch.

*****

Phisto clapped his hands together as he strode down the ramp of No Data Available.  Clean, fresh, and dressed in his favorite black tailored suit and red dress shirt he smirked as his matching shoes smartly clicked on the metallic surface of the docking pad.  Turning briskly at the base of the ramp, he headed for the exit.  As he finished his turn, he spotted what appeared to be a welcome party.  An attractive woman, professionally dressed in a black business suit of her own, stood flanked by two impressive looking guards in matching black combat gear.

Pulling up to the trio, Phisto lazily saluted and smirked playfully.  “Well hey there.  Y’all must be from Ms. Morgan, I reckon?”
27 Jul 2017, 2:08pm
The blonde woman smiles congenially, stepping forward to greet Phisto with a kiss on each cheek.

"On behalf of Mademoiselle Morgan and Black Omega, welcome to Clair Dock!" she says warmly, "My name is Apollonia, please let me know if there is anything I can do make your stay more comfortable."

The glint in her eye and curl of her lips suggests that she means this quite literally.

"But for now, let us not keep your host waiting. Please, follow me."

Holding her devilish smile a moment longer, she gestures for Phisto to fall in step with her between the brace of armoured guards.
27 Jul 2017, 2:21pm
Phisto returns Apollonia's greeting and at her comment raises an eyebrow. His own eyes shine slightly as he nods politely.

"Noted." Phisto allows a small smile of his own to crack into his cheek. "And nice to meet you, Apollonia." As she turns to leave, he obediently falls in line and matches her pace.

As they walk, Phisto tilts his head back, looking around the docking area. He furrows his brow curiously at the site of matte-black Federal Corvette crawling towards the exit. Turning his gaze back to Apollonia, he shamelessly steals a look at her slight, graceful figure.

Unable to keep a cheesy grin from plastering his face, he chuckles. "You know, this is my first time on Clair Dock. Pretty nice place you got here."
27 Jul 2017, 2:46pm
"It was not always so," replies Apollonia, "but with a little investment, we have turned this little backwater into a thriving commercial sector, non?"

Glancing over to Phisto as they walk, she continues;

"Black Omega is committed to investing in the wellbeing of the citizens on the outer fringe, not just here in Tjakiri, but in Nuen, Ts'in Gu, Suya... all the neighbouring systems."

She comes to a halt as they approach an elevator, a sad look in her eyes.

"And yet, we are scorned by those who do not understand life on the frontier. They call us pirates. Slavers. Barbarians," she spits out the words as she runs her fingers along the elevator controls. She pouts, looking up at Phisto as she smooths her suit out over her slender curves.

"You see nothing barbaric here, no monsieur?"

The elevator gives a soft ping as the doors open.
27 Jul 2017, 2:53pm
Phisto grins at Apollonia, chuckling slightly at her pouting. "See a bunch of stuff I like so far." He brought his fist up to his mouth and faked a cough. "Soaring technology, impressive ships, polite manners, and attractive folk to boot."

Nodding submissively, he gestured with an open palm to the waiting elevator.

"But that said, a little barbarism now and again never hurt anyone." He winked. "After you."
27 Jul 2017, 3:08pm
Apollonia smiles sweetly and shakes her head.

"This is where I depart, monsieur. Select the top floor. Don't worry about Idris, he's expecting you."

She takes a step back and gestures to the open door.

"Enjoy your evening."
27 Jul 2017, 3:46pm
Stepping into the lift, Phisto turns back to Apollonia with a confused look. "Idris?" Suddenly, his face lights up in recognition. "Oh, right! The really big guy."

Looking to the controls then back to Apollonia, he presses the button for the top floor with his right hand then brings it up to his head in a lackadaisical salute. Moving his hand away from his forehead, he flashes a "V" symbol with his fingers as the door closes.

"Catch you later."

After the door closes and the lift engages, Phisto shakes his head side to side, trying to clear his thoughts. He shifts his weight, trying to decide what stance to have when the doors open. Settling on a relaxed recline against the elevator back wall with his backside against the handhold, he smooths out his suit jacket and hooks his thumbs into his belt loops. He gazes around the space, whistling to himself.

Within a few moments, the doors open.
28 Jul 2017, 6:52am
Blocking the exit of the elevator stands the hulking seven-foot frame of Idris Gawr, in full tactical armour, a brace of heavy carbines holstered on his trunk-like thighs as if they were pistols.

In one giant armoured gauntlet he wields a baton, pulsing with a faint white light and gentle humm. With the other he beckons Phisto to step forward.
28 Jul 2017, 2:02pm
Phisto thrust his shoulder blades back, causing the rest of his body to pop forward from the elevator wall. Unhooking his thumbs from his pants, he grins and steps forward to the wall of man waving him forward.

"Guess I graduated from the welcoming party..." Phisto moves his view from Idris' face plate down to the large, humming baton in his hand, "...to whatever-kind-of-party you're supposed to be."

He raises arms, expecting a search. "Go ahead."
28 Jul 2017, 2:14pm
Idris steps forward and moves the baton slowly down Phisto's body. Suddenly, it vibrates as it passes his left hand side, the white glow turning bright red. With a low guttural growl, Idris reaches down and removes the pistol from under Phisto's jacket.

The rest of his search reveals no other weapons; the giant nods with a grunt, stepping aside for Phisto to pass into a small lobby with a set of polished double doors at the far end.
28 Jul 2017, 2:27pm
As Phisto passes Idris, he nods in the direction of his pistol now securely held in the giant guard's hand.  He smirks, understanding yet slightly annoyed at being relieved of the weapon.

"Feel free to pop off a couple shots down at the range, if you like.  Just make sure I get it back, alright?"

Not waiting for a response he doesn't even expect, Phisto walks briskly to the doors at the end of the lobby.  He breathes deep, suddenly aware of nerves dancing through his mind.  Stopping at the doors, he gives his outfit a last-second-once-over, checking for anything even slightly out of sort.  Satisfied, he looks down at his right hand, flexing it into a fist then relaxing it.

He looks up at the doors, reaches out to the handles, and pushes them forward to enter the room beyond.
28 Jul 2017, 2:53pm
The observation lounge is large and spacious, dimly lit with pale white lights set into the floor and ceiling. The furniture is sparse, but luxurious; a bottle of wine and two glasses stand on a low table, between two dining chairs and a chaise-longues, crafted in real ebony and upholstered in genuine leather.

Marra stands at the viewport, overlooking the outer surface of Clair Dock, the small planet of Tjakiri 1 and the intense orange star beyond. After gazing on the serene vista for a few more moments, she turns to greet her guest with a smile and steps slowly to the table.

"Pleasant journey?" she asks, taking the wine and pouring out two glasses.
28 Jul 2017, 3:22pm
Phisto steps into the lounge and catches his breath, marveling at the impressive scene.

He whispers low to himself. "Wow."

Sweeping his eyes quickly across the room to Marra, he pauses. Seeing her hung against the backdrop of the planet and star beyond, he can't help but smile. As she turns, he continues walking forward, his smile growing into a massive grin.

Eyeing the wine and glasses, he nods in response to her question. "Just fine, thanks. How've you been?"
28 Jul 2017, 3:31pm
"Busy," Marra replies flatly, passing Phisto a glass.

She begins to walk back to the viewport, motioning with her head for him to join her.

"As have you been, so I hear."
