Elite roleplay: Off station

OFF STATION

Your ship, deep space, anything that is not happening inside the Citi Gateway or Ingaba...

General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

The medics were only medics by name only. In theory, they knew just enough first aid to save a life, or kill it. But on the bright side, their hygiene was questionable at best. As they went about their business attending to Twinkle-Toes, one of them failed to place a bandage on a wound correctly, and had to violently rip it off before reaffixing it. It was bright pink, and had some feminine cartoony character plastered on it. On might even say it was kawaii, but the medics were eager to prove themselves, more out of fear of being flushed out of an airlock, or tossed into the pit as ready to go kitty kibble.

The large man scratched at his rotund belly, and stubbly chin.

"Marra?" he said stupidly mishearing the pronunciation. "Donno who she is. Ferget about her! You got a fan base! The next run, you get a cut of the winnins'!"
25 Aug 2017, 6:30pm
Snipes smirked. "You'll have a knife in my brain, a weapon would be of no use to me regardless."

He rises from his seat, inputting more into his console. "I shall go make arrangements and see you at 0800 then." He bowed politely to the man who would literally be in his head in a little while, and headed for the hatch.
25 Aug 2017, 6:51pm
"Mr. Snipes," Doctor Glaboski called to the man once he reached the door. "I wasn't referring to you. I was talking about your assistant." he smiled with fingers pressed together in a steeple like form. "I suggest you get some rest."
25 Aug 2017, 8:10pm
Turning to Dr. Glaboski, "Of course. Thank you for your time."

He stepped out of the clinic into the corridor where a modified Achilles robot was waiting. "We'll have to remove your arm weaponry..."

They then headed back to the Nyx Lukos to prepare for the procedure.
25 Aug 2017, 10:26pm
Luke sat up and used his free arm to wipe his face, barely registering the haphazardness at which the 'medics' were doing their work.

"If Mir-rah," He emphasised the syllables with the sort of indignation one usually reserved for laughter at a funeral, "is one of the prizes, I'll take her and leave. I don't want money, I dont need money, and I absolutely do not need to go through that sort of hell again!"

His breathing was heavy, a sign of the anger that just wanted to explode out but couldn't thanks to his current physical state. Managing nothing more than a glowering stare at the man sat opposite him, Luke stoicly attempted to show his decision was made and would not be changed, doing so over the medics head as a rudimentary sling was wrapped round his arm and neck, mumbling something about keeping it immobile for a couple of days until the stitches held.

[OOC; sorry again for anyone whos been trying to follow mine and Leif's arc about this taking soo long, I've been really overwhelmed by IRL stuff recently, Hopefully, we'll be able to pick up momentum again now. we left off the arc >Here< ]

************

What? thought Bryan as he looked up and down the corridor of the fourth floor, the access hatch to the engine heat conduits should be around here somewhere. Bryan couldn't see any obvious hatches or access panels anywhere, instead of an access panel where the blueprints had indicated there was just a potted tree which extended the height of the corridor.

Where the… He was about to pass the tree when he spotted a red light behind the branches about doorbell height, he walked over and inspected the button more closely, the button seemed to be unlabeled, he gave it a tentative press. The button changed colour to green, there was a sound of something powering down and the tree gave a slight shake. He had disengaged the magnetic clamp holding the pot in place. He looked down at the pot and realised that it was now possible to slide the pot two feet to the left. He did so and found that behind the tree was a concealed maintenance cupboard above which was the Heat conduit access hatch which had previously been hidden by the foliage. It was however located in a rather awkward spot, the hatch was located in the top truncated corner of the corridor.

“Really?...” Bryan said looking at the hatch which was a full foot above head height, “this is what happens when you put aesthetic design over practicality” he said in a monotone voice.
Bryan pulled the maintenance cupboard open, the door was heavy but it was supported by a hinge that swung it down so that the door could unfold to form a step ladder. Upon opening the cupboard the access hatch automatically opened, the two panels folding inward, revealing a tunnel about 3 metres deep angling upwards at an angle perpendicular to the entrance, the back of the tunnel was glowing orange from the heat conduits. As the tunnel opened the contained heat rushed outwards, washing over Bryan giving him a vague mental image of himself about to climb into the gaping mouth of a fire breathing dragon.

He grabbed the replacement conduit which was a bluey-gray cylindrical object contained in a glass tube that fit perfectly in his hand, he began to climb the step ladder and stuck his head in the tunnel. The heat from the tunnel was intense Bryans face was already starting to sweat from the heat but he'd have to climb higher to get in far enough to repair the systems. He assessed the damage to the heat conduction system, “WOW,...Impressive” the heat built up within the system had melted the bluey-grey inner part of the the previous conduit and was now a bubbling white molten liquid contained inside the ‘glass’ cylinder, the stuff was obviously not glass. Bryan almost immediately felt less impressed when he realised how hot it was going to be, and he was going to have to find a way to remove it by hand. Although his flight suit had gloves on it, they were made from a breathable material that wasn’t the best at dealing with heat. Bryan climbed down the step ladder and had another look in the cupboard below. He found an odd tongs like apparatus that looked like it was for removing hot broken conduits, he grabbed it and climbed back into the access vent. The arm with the tongs outstretched as far inside the vent as it could. The tongs were still a few inches short of the broken conduit.
“Shit.”

Bryan  tried pulling himself further into the vent with his other hand to try to close the necessary distance to change the conduit. Suddenly the vent doors clamped down on Bryan’s stomach. He would’ve fallen out the vent if the door didn’t catch under his ribcage. “Hwuh, What the…” He tried to readjust his feet on the rung of the step ladder, but the step ladder had folded away when the vent door tried to close, “shit…” the intense heat was starting to build now that the vent was blocked again, Bryan was dangling from the roof but he found fixing the conduit the most pressing matter, despite the uncomfortable position he was in.

He stretched out the tongs again this time he managed to grab the broken conduit and pry it gently out of it’s fixture, he quickly exchanged the conduit in the tongs and inserted the new one into the fixture. Within seconds the conduit was glowing a hot white similar to the lower part of the heat relay, as the heat from the engines began to pass through it, soon the bottom, top and conduit all began to equalise out into a blazing orange glow as the built up heat was finally beginning to escape out of the ship into space. “Right, now to get unstuck...”

Bryan tried to pry the door of the access vent open to allow him to slip through but the metal doors refused to budge, he also tried wriggling his legs to try to escape but which to anyone witnessing would probably be rather comical. After a few minutes of vain struggling he finally  resigned himself to being stuck and needing help. He breathlessly called up the comms and called Leif, the call connected and awkwardly said, “Hey, I… uh… kinda need a hand here.”
14 Sep 2017, 1:17am
Senator Hallman kept nodding after Leif stopped talking.

“I take it I should do so?” Leif asked and tilted his head at Hallman.

“Yes. And if you may excuse me now...” the Senator said with a sigh.

“Of course.”

Leif gave the Senator a polite nod as he turned and left the cockpit, the door closing behind him with the same gentle sound it opened earlier with. He himself turned to look out the canopy and leaned back in his seat, arms hanging to the sides. The heat indicator was still far beyond normal levels and the warning lights kept flashing.

This is gonna be a long trip...

He closed his eyes and tried to breathe calmly. The intense red flashes went through his lids and he adjusted to it with a couple more breathes, when they suddenly stopped.
His lids shot up and his gaze went to the heat indicator. It had gone below limits.

Finally!

Shortly thereafter the comms lit up, Bryan called and explained his uncomfortable situation.

“Sure, I’ll be right there,” Leif said half-willingly and pushed himself out of the seat, heading for the vent Bryan stuck in.
23 Sep 2017, 1:16am
A slick film of sweat was begining to form on Bryan's forhead. Although the heat was nothing compared to what it had been before, it was still to hot to be exposed to for any length of time in such an enclosed space. Bryan was begining to feel faint from the intense heat that was microwaving everything from his ribcage up. He could feel his energy was waning, he had struggled to re-adjust himself so that the vent doors were no longer catching him directly under the ribs that was still sore from the toolbox slamming into him shortly before getting stuck in the vent. His efforts however had bore no fruits and only served to further tire him out.

Bryan sighed, gently swinging his legs below him in small arcs like a lathargic grandfather clock's pendulum, his voice echoed harshly against the metallic walls of the shaft. The sound was unpleasant and distorted. Bryan couldn't really tell whether his headache was from the harsh echoing or from the heat. His legs were begining to feel numb from hanging and poor having their circulation dampened by the door.

A thought struck Bryan while he waited, what if Leif can't here me because ive got my head stuck in this bloody vent? an image flashed through his mind of himself trying to instruct Leif non- verbally through the use of only his legs. He would have laughed at the thought of it if he was not so disgruntled with being stuck in such a humiliating position.

Bryans eyes were starting to feel heavy lidded when he thought he heard a noise coming from what he thought was outside the vent.

"I'd really appreciate it if this was to never come up in conversation" he commented to what he hoped was Leif and not his imagination.
24 Sep 2017, 1:20am
"This whole trip is better not mentioned at all," Leif responded as he stepped towards the maintenance door. "Nobody would believe us we made a jump over 20 kylies. But we got a more urgent problem, I guess. Hold on!"

He pulled on the maintenance door beneath Bryan's feet, it resisted and hardly moved. Leif put a foot against the wall, pulling as hard as he could until suddenly, the door sprung open and sent him flying backwards on his back. At the same moment, the hatch doors let loose on Bryan.
26 Sep 2017, 9:45pm
Bryan fell from the vent like food that had missed someones mouth. His feet collided with the floor and his numb legs buckled beneath him. The rest of his body crashed to the floor and sprawled out across the floor. Bryan was grateful to saud kruger for installing carpets that had to a degree made his collision with the floor less painful.

"Ow. Well. Good to be outta there, a bit too toasty for my liking"
Bryan sat up and tried to stand but his legs were still numb from being suspended for so long. Trying to put any weight on his feet sent pins and needles up the entire lenght of his legs. He decided to wait for the sensation and numbness to pass before he attempted to stand again.
"So? Did you break the news to the passengers?"
26 Sep 2017, 9:59pm
Leif stood up and brushed his shoulders, followed by a few stretches to make sure his bones were still in the right spots.

"Kinda. I told the senator that we are out in nowhere and let him handle how to tell his company. He's the guy paying for them, after all."

He walked up to Bryan, offering him a hand to get up.

"I noticed you atleast cleared the objective, but from your look I can tell that you're not alright. You really should take a break now that we're in no critical status anymore," he said with a smirk.
26 Sep 2017, 10:46pm
Bryan took Leif's outstretched hand.
"Meh, nothings broken, just some bruising at most." He winced as he pulled himself up.

"But here, listen seeing as we're headin' to Colonia for repairs and the damage is partially my fault, I can probably pull some strings and get us seen to immediatly. I know a mechanic who owes me a favour. She might even do it pro bono just to work on a luga, she doesnt see many out her way." Bryan explained he felt bad for having trashed the FSD on his maden voyage aboard the Moto Meli. Hopefully this wasnt an omen for things to come.
27 Sep 2017, 12:37am
Leif didn't let loose of the grip, instead he held Bryan close for a second.
"That's convenient," he said quietly.

He took a step back, putting the hand he helped Bryan up with on his shoulder.

"Now, take a break, would you? I'll take care of the rest," he said loud again, hinting the way to the quarters with his other hand.
27 Sep 2017, 1:03am
"Ok, i guess if its an order then" bryan said cracking a smile. He had a tendency to overwork himeself for the sake of not wanting to be a burden to others, he was lax when it came to his own work but as soon as it came to work for other people he had a bad habit of holding himself to a sometimes unreasonably high standard. However he did admit he was rather tired and sore after the fiasco that had been the last few hours.
It's gonna be a while till we get to Colonia anyway, I can fix more later.

"See ya later then" he said turning to head to the quarters adding as he steped out from the heat that was radiating down from the open vent above them "Oh and careful closing that vent, it's a bloody death-trap" he gave a short laugh that was cut short by a sharp pain that shot through the bruised rib. He turned and waved goodbye over his shoulder as he headed for bed.
27 Sep 2017, 6:38pm
"Cya," Leif said as he turned back towards the maintenance vent, put his hands on the hips.

He did suffer in his work, put himself into this mess, but helped me out of a situation that would've ... probably dragged out for many, many jumps.

The tongs and broken conduit laid on the floor, imperfections on this else so accurately cleaned vessel. Leif sighed, picked up the tongs, put them back into the closet and closed it. The vent above closed in sync. Picking up the molten conduit, he noticed the burn it caused to the carpet beneath.

I hate when this happens. The carpet is the most expensive thing in upkeep.

He shoved the planter back into place and reengaged the maglock before heading back to the bridge, the molten conduit still in his hand.
