Elite roleplay: Off station

OFF STATION

Your ship, deep space, anything that is not happening inside the Citi Gateway or Ingaba...

General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

Bryan had his head in the access cupboard, it was much more spacious and comfortable to be in compared to the heat relay access vent. He had begun taking the disassembling bits of the FSD once he saw the faint blue lights pulsing throughout wink out after Leif turned it off. He had the top half of the FSD's Shielding removed and was working on some of the internals by the time he heard the sound of soft footprints on the carpet approaching down the corridor towards him. He didn't bother to look and guessed it was Leif.

"Do you remember the mnemonic for the internal parts so this doesn't explode when we turn it back on?" Bryan joked without taking his head out of the cupboard to look. He kept his voice serious until the end of the question where it raised slightly in pitch giving it away that it was a joke.
03 Dec 2017, 8:22am
Leif smiled over Bryan's joke.

"You like being stuck in access vents, don't you?" he fired back as he approached him, taking a look at some of the parts lying around. He noticed the inside of the shielding plates had turned blue. Also he noticed the tray of the fuel injection needles pulled open.

"So, what step are you on? Replacing the injection needles?" he asked and went up to the tray to inspect the remaining needles.

"Well...Not stuck stuck..." Bryan retorted.

"Whelp, I've finished taking apart the shell but I still need to drain the core before I replace the pins. I'm still a little stiff after all the bangs and bumps, see if you can release this valve for me will you?" Bryan backed out of the cupboard.

He'd somehow managed to smear soot across his forehead, likely from wiping the sweat off his forehead or something. he held the wrench he's been using out to Leif in one hand and pointed at the valve in question.
04 Dec 2017, 9:17pm
Taking the wrench from Bryan's hand, Leif said self-confident: "Sure I can," and added a smile to turn over and step up to the valve.

Like a professional he learned to be, he put the wrench on the pin sticking out at the front of the valve, brought himself into a good position to push and ... the valve hardly moved.

"Don't tell me this thing is stuck," he pressed out between his gritted teeth, tensioning his body in order to push harder. It took him a couple of attempts to finally break it free, it sprang open and sent Leif tumbling forward.

Regaining his balance, he added: "Guess I've been a spacer for too long. Not too much of the mechanic strength left." Taking few deep breathes, he continued: "You mentioned getting data from this jump, what would a specialist do with that?"

Supercruise, Cubeo

"Yes Jirai-senpai, the crates have been delivered as requested." Veronica reported over the comms. Her lips curled into a frown as she thought of who the delivery was for. "Why did I have to be the one to go there? Why couldn't you have sent one of the usual runners? We're just lucky I didn't slap that spoiled brat, Asling, right in her smug, bitch-face!"

"Veronica, this is a part of your training. Your aversion to Asling is known around the clan." Jirai's gentle voice spoke over the speakers. "One must learn to keep one's composure in unfavourable situations. Seijuro-sama is pleased with you."

"Thank you, senpai," the young woman relented.

"Anyway, our merchants have come across a new establishment in the Inara system that has become quite popular in it's short life. Reports indicate that it is a high-class establishment that caters to their patron's more... cardinal needs." Jirai sounded uncomfortable with that last part.

Naturally, Veronica took that tone as an opportunity for fun. "Oh, well sounds like an entertaining spot."

"Amusing that you should say that," the senior clansman cleared his throat before continuing. "The master-merchants have requested that you seek out the establishment and see if it is up to the Clan's standards in all humane aspects. If they are, you may offer a contract for a supply for our sake."

A sly smile crossed Veronica's red-hued lips. An easy mission and a chance to relax? That was a no-brainer!

"Of course! I'll go right away!"

The young protege terminated the transmission and plotted a course for the Inara system on her Cobra's HUD. She paused for a second to think about what her sensei would think about her going to such an establishment and laughed. Naturally Jubei-sensei would be very uncomfortable, even if he had no issue with people's chosen profession. Veronica wiped a tear from her eye and started the Frame Shift Drive.

Next stop, Inara.

Breaking news from GalNet as the Minister of Defence for the Ryders of the Void takes the podium. Interestingly, the Minister is not in his usual trappings of office, but dressed in his full black battle dress uniform.

"Esteemed Colleagues of the Galactic Community,

Thank you for granting me the opportunity to address you all today. As you know, conflict continues within the 2nd Southern Galactic Quadrant between the Ryders of the Void and Sanctis. Unfortunately, I am here to convey to you today that Sanctis has decided to elevate their atrocities within the region. What follows is a detailing of the history of this conflict.

On November 24th, 3303, Ryder Vice-Commander Dunedain Knight attempted to establish communications with Sanctis as Ryder expansion into their system is an eventuality. Ryder forces entered Karka to assist Sanctis in their fight for Chandler Ring - giving Sanctis control over Karka.

On November 29th, unknown parties attacked the Ryder system of Paroja.

On November 30th, a diplomatic response came from Sanctis seeking 'a method or agreement to implement a peace treaty between us.'

It was discovered on November 30th that members of Sanctis held large bounties within Paroja. At the same time, Paroja went into Civil Unrest. Clearly, Sanctis was actively undermining Ryder authority in Paroja while feigning diplomacy. What began is a desire for peaceful negotiations to establish an embassy in Karka was now an open conflict.

On December 1st, Ryder Supreme Commander TooBones sent one last diplomatic communique to Sanctis to avoid open war. On December 2nd, Sanctis declared, 'we will destroy all your ships on sight.' Ryder Influence in other systems immediately began to drop.

On December 2nd, 3303, Ryder forces entered Karka to destabilize them. On December 4th, Sanctis was in Civil Unrest.

Since that time, Sanctis has continued to invade Ryder territories in order to destabilize the region. The Ryders of the Void have responded by putting Sanctis into lockdown.

Now, today, December 13th, 3303, Sanctis has UA-bombed Braun Orbital in Tengye. This escalation cannot go unanswered. Accordingly, the Ryders of the Void are declaring open war on Sanctis in order to drive them back to Stith Enterprise. It is only in this way that the Galactic Community can be safe from Tyranny.

Those who wish to join the Ryders are welcome. Those who wish to side with Sanctis now know the extent of their treachery.

I thank the Chair for this opportunity to speak."

"Ayyy," said Bryan as the valve sprang open, He smiled at Leif's comment about getting rusty because he'd spent too long in space. For Bryan, he was so proficient because piloting "The Nomadic Wayfarer" required him to constantly keep his skills fresh. The ship had a mechanical Munchausen syndrome that constantly begged for his attention, except there always was something actually wrong with it.

Bryan sat with his back to the wall with the cupboard and rested his arm on the plant pot in the corner. He looked up at Leif as they waited for the core to finish draining. "Well, the first thing that'll happen is They'll laugh us out of their office when we tell them what happened, then they'll apologise profusely when we show them the data and realise that we're not shitting them..." Bryan gave it a second before properly explaining what would happen. "Well they'll likely call whoever they're working/researching for to try and negotiate an offer for the data, they'll likely make a big offer to try and get an exclusivity deal on the data, depending on how insulted we are about their laughing we can either accept or maybe share it with the wider scientific community although that probably won't be as profitable, it's up to you really, it's your jump data." Bryan paused to let the options sink in. He didn't really care which option they chose, on one hand, there was the money, on the other, there was the chance of being famous for making the longest survived jump in a Beluga.

"Whoever we give it to will likely spending months to years looking over the reams of data and crying about how they wish we had the proper equipment to monitor such a jump. See because the internal analytics never expected to monitor such an event a large portion of it is errors, so essentially what we're doing is handing someone the answer and asking them to come up with the question using only a portion of the value of 'x'. If by some miracle they do manage to reverse engineer or come up with a theory which is even halfways correct, they'll likely move onto prototyping a ship that can recreate it. They probably won't be able to without first investing in a jacked up Navigation and safe pathfinding system first, maybe if we buy some share in Core Dynamics and the likes our grandchildren might end up getting rich too."Bryan felt a little proud of having laid out the future so neatly before them.

"Course that all depends on there being anything salvageable from the analytics in the first place." he finished with a shrug.

"My jump data because she's my ship," Leif said as he sat down at the opposite wall, "you say? You made it do that jump, so I wouldn't dare to claim it as my own achievement." He shrugged. "But seeing the look on their face would be totally worth it. Who would you start out with? Core Dynamics or one of those independent people that made so much cash with their work they bought their own port. What was that one woman's name again, Farsea? Foresee? I've heard she apparently knows what she's doing, but didn't have the time yet to give her a visit."

Still exhausted by the lack of sleep, he rested his arms on his knees and laid his head into his palms.

Suddenly, he chuckled. "You do realize we were in Inara four jumps ago and you just signed your contract just two days ago? Twenty thousand lightyears." He shook his head in disbelief.

"I think I know the one you're on about. bases herself out of Deciat I think." Bryan said. He'd shifted and brought his knees up to his chest like Leif across the from him. "We can definitely check her out. If you'd like I can make a call back to the bubble to make up a whitelist of people who would be interested for when we return. No need to worry about the info leaking my contact knows how to be discreet... That sounded ominous. I didn't mean anything bad just they'll understand the situation without actually having to say it to them so even if someone intercepts they won't be any the wiser."

Bryan took a breath to calm down.

"They work in logistics," he said as if to say 'not a spy network'. "They're very good, smells gaps in the market like a bloodhound, he'll find the best place to sell the data for the highest profit," Bryan had begun to absentmindedly twiddle his thumbs.

he enjoyed the slight pause in the conversation. he was beginning to feel sleepy again. He thought about heading back to bed soon. Ah. he remembered. The core it had finished draining and Bryan resolved himself to finishing up here before heading back.

Bryan let out a small yawn as Leif chuckled and mused over their journey.

"I know," he said raising himself onto his knees turning back to the now fully drained core. "If we were supposed to be going to Colonia I might say we were making good time." He said cheekily.

"Lakon-Delta-Alpha-Mike, Citi Control, this is an independent starport. Obey all local traffic regulations and request docking clearance before you attempt to land."

"Citi Control, Lakon-Delta-Alpha-Mike requesting docking clearance."

"Lakon-Delta-Alpha-Mike, Citi Control, request approved. Prep for arrival on pad zero-fife."

With that, Commander Brynhild Hervorsdottir slid her Asp Explorer Esmay Suiza through the mailslot and settled down for a textbook landing on pad 05.

Well away from Citi Gateway, Bryn and Abby were discussing their latest escapade.

"We'll crunch the data when we get home, too many transactions involving slaves means they're hiding a slave market," Bryn said.

"I think it'll show they're relatively clean," Abby replied. "Not enough symptoms of a hidden slave market."

"We didn't check the warehouses, or the industrial areas. We'd still be there if we did."

"My opinion, Bryn? We wasted our time."

"Your cut of that brandy sale wasn't a waste of your time."

Abby chuckled. "Yeah, there's that."

"But we were not supposed to," Leif said, grinning towards Bryan.

Driving his hands into the floor, he pushed himself up to continue the repairs on the Frameshift Drive.

"Wasn't there some tool to grab the injection needles?" he said as he checked the tray for it, "or have you got it already?"
