Elite roleplay: Off station

OFF STATION

Your ship, deep space, anything that is not happening inside the Citi Gateway or Ingaba...

General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

Look up at Nerys and start thinking of lyrics for a silly song to sing when I get on the keyboard.

"My word! You do look weather-worn and interesting with damp hair, A very good look on you"

Give a slight shake of my head to take my mind off that track.

"Well I know how to kit up a ship for the task. That booster thingy I told you about is important ingredient number one.. .Along with.. .. oh what's her name..."

Swish my finger into the air as if I just remembered the answer to an impossible question upon remembering the FSD experts' name.

"FARSEER! Phillis Farseer in.. .Dedicate? Something like that anyway. She's an FSD wizz and all the Rim-Trippers go see her before they journey the sea of stars"

Start climbing the ladder.

"I think I told you I was setting up a ship to meet a .. well someone that went to the same Academy as I"

Absentmindedly rub a foil wound I was given in Fencing Class by my *friend*

"Can't really call her a friend. She was out on the rim exploring and needed a resupply as she was staying out longer then she intended. To answer your question, I can tell you enough to get started and maybe help you get the FSD Booster. If you want to hear from someone that's done it for months including planetary landings on places of interest, I'll see if I can shake my .. associates tree for you. She knows her stuff."

22 Mar 2020, 10:14pm
Nerys nodded. "Thank you. It would be really appreciated!"

A light on the navigation panel started to blink. "Oh, this is our last jump towards Robigo".

Still barefoot, the girl sat in the pilot seat and pushed away the wet hair from the face. "Ready when you are, Creamy" she nodded. "Fasten those seat belts, your prized possessions await you".
22 Mar 2020, 10:39pm
Head back to the cargo space and my makeshift seat. Once strapped in, check the intercom is active.

"All strapped in and ready Ms Nymei. My prize possessions are still on my lost on my Conda. I hope I have a ship or two on Robigo so I can start looking for it"

Hearing the ship powering up ready for the last jump, double-check my safety straps.

"Either way Ms Nymei, I'll have some money for you and maybe a few people I know could be on station that will give you good money for that tea"
23 Mar 2020, 2:03pm
"Oh, the ride is free, Creamy, we agreed on that! But selling this tea for good price would be really wonderful".

"Five... Four... Three... Two... One... Jump"

The witchspace twisted and turned around the Fairytale 1, and after some seconds the stars shifted in a new position.

"Entering Robigo system" Celeste said. And after a couple of seconds... "Warning. Ship detected. We are being scanned."

On the radar, an hollow triangle blinked to life.

"Weapon signatures detected. Possible pirate ship."

Nerys swallowed. "Creamy, it seems that we have a problem" she said, tightening the grip on the control bar. "Probably we'll have to dance a bit".

"Celeste, raise shields. Supercruise to the nearest station, now. He'll try to interdict us."
23 Mar 2020, 2:18pm
Dash up to the cockpit and lean on the back of the pilot's seat.

"Don't fret, just point ya self at Hauser's Reach and open comms to the ship"

Find out the type of ship scanning the little winder.

Open coms and be polite. Ask them what they want. Could be worth losing some tea to live"

Stay calm so as not to worry Nerys.

"If we get tugged out of hyper-cruiser, keep your nose pointed at the escape reticle. If it looks like your going to fail, just kill power to the FSD so we can get back to hyper-cruiser quicker"

Place my hand on Nerys' shoulder.

"Stay cool, we'll be fine"

Smile and wink at my pilot.
23 Mar 2020, 2:48pm
Nerys just left the throttle for a split second to adjust her glasses on her nose.

"I am not worried" she said, and her voice was... different? Surely there was ice in it.

It's like that emergency surgery she thought. Doctor Mallett had a flight delay and was unable to arrive on time... so I did it. And I did it well.

"Celeste, do not answer to their calls. Shut off the beacon. Send classical music on their channels and interferences on their sensors. I will not beg for my life".

"Aye Commander. They are on intercept cruise. Possible interdiction in four seconds."

"Creamy, hold on something. I am going to improvise."
23 Mar 2020, 3:00pm
Look down on Nerys and think about what to grab on to and quickly give my self a mental slap for inappropriate timing.  Keep a good grip on the seat and plant my feet.

Wonder about the change that's come over Nerys. She still seems nieve and inexperienced, but her self confidence cast a long shadow over her usual nervousness making her even more attractive.

"What I wouldn't give for a co-pilots seat.. and a good blade. I say Celeste, how about a little Danse Macabre hmm? String heavy arrangement if you would be so kind. Good chase music don'cha know"

Hold tight and project that trust humming Danse Macabre to myself.
23 Mar 2020, 3:33pm
"Agreed"

The internal speakers started to play Saint-Saëns at maximum volume.

"Commander, they are calling us. They demand us to stop and to release the cargo".

"Send them this music. Switch to MAD."

Maximum Awareness Display, also called Combat Mode, was a modality of the external HUD focused only on essential items. Navigation, comms and auxiliary panels went out, leaving the cockpit almost dark. Only the tracking circle and the escape vector were visible.

"Interdictor detected" Celeste said. "Locking... now".

The ship started to jump like a wild horse. Nerys followed the escape vector.

Zig, zig, zig, Death in cadence,
Striking with his heel a tomb,
Death at midnight plays a dance-tune,
Zig, zig, zig, on his violin.

A spiral... a dive... then a reverse turn. The Fairytale creaked like a wood boat.

The winter wind blows and the night is dark;
Moans are heard in the linden-trees.
Through the gloom, white skeletons pass,
Running and leaping in their shrouds.
23 Mar 2020, 3:48pm
Hang on to the seat with all my might being careful not to distract Nerys while I swig around with the thrashing of the Winder.

"I say. Capital! Just a little longer and we'll be out of it. Jolly good show what!"

Lean in and take the liberty of using the target inspection panel to a good look at the ship interdicting The Fairytale.

"Oh Blast, It's a Cobra. Damn fine ship that but not one that can outclass you Ms Nymei"

Take note of the ship's name for later, the Tide Dweller, and say in a quiet voice.

"That'll give me something to do once I'm reacquainted with a pilot's seat of my own"

Glance at the Interdiction meter and brace my self for return to normal hyper-cruise, or if things take a drastic turn in this joust, back to a near standstill.
23 Mar 2020, 4:15pm
"Interdiction energy flux at maximum torque".

This was the critical moment. The red and blue bars danced for some seconds on the screen...

Then Nerys slammed the stick hard towards the escape vector, and the Fairytale was free.

Zig, zig, zig, each one is frisking.
The bones of the dancers are heard to crack-
But hist! of a sudden they quit the round,
They push forward, they fly; the cock has crowed.

Like a rubber ball shot from a catapult, the small ship spinned for some seconds, then stabilized.

"We escaped" Celeste said. "Enemy FSD overheated."

"The cock has crowed" Nerys whispered. Then, louder: "Celeste, set the course for Hauser's Reach. Turn on the beacon and inform the police.".

She unfastened her seat belts and stood up. And then Creamy realized that her face was pale white and her hands were shaking hard.

"Please... take the helm, I need to..."

Then she ran towards the tiny bathroom.
23 Mar 2020, 4:35pm
Get the Fairytale on target and push the throttle up to full, taking note of the time left before a pilot will be needed to drop from Hyper-Cruise.

Grab a sick-bag from the pilot's seat and chase after Nerys. Being ill in a low gravity situation can be messy without assistance.

"Celeste, kill the music if you would be so kind"

Get up and find Nerys leaning over the little sink still trembling. Gather her hair out of her face and put the bag in her line of sight. Once she takes it, gently stroke her back.

"Relax and take a seat on the lavy Ms Nymei, let ya legs rest a bit. That was a cracking job you did back there, you should be proud of ya self. Bravo?"

Listen to the sound of the hyperdrive cycling up knowing the Fairytale is under the influence of one of the astral bodies on the space lane to Hauser's Reach.

"Don't worry about that, we still got a little over a minute before the ship needs piloting. I'll get you a water pack once you've .. well you know"
23 Mar 2020, 5:22pm
"Thanks, Creamy... Just a bit of... nervousness. This is nothing compared to my first surgery... I needed three bags, not just one".

But the patient had survived. Just like now.

Nerys splashed her face with some water, then activated the air flow to empty the zero-g sink.

"My hair is a mess" she mumbled. Furthermore, the bad taste in her mouth was over-amplificated by the tongue cyber-implant, and the sensation was totally disgusting.

Then she freezed.

But... who taught me all these things? Certainly not the accelerated pilot school. It's like I was able to "see" the ship's trajectory. Where does this instinct come from?

"Celeste... request approach authorization to the station. Assist Mr. Goodness for the landing."

"Aye, Commander."
23 Mar 2020, 6:34pm
Give Nerys an appraising look as I hand her the cool water pack from the little fridge before getting back to the pilots seat. Accelerate the Winder as the speed indicator falls to the safe drop zone and manually trigger the drop put of Hyper-Cruise just before we hit the rings that Hauser's Reach floats above. Gently swing the winder inline with the slot weaving between the big cruise ships that drift like mighty sea creatures around the station.

"Hauser's Reach, this is.. umm.. little ship.. or.. err.. Winder... Oh, the Fairytail.. .not sure of the registration. Any way, requesting permission to land if ya don't mind. Thank you"

An Indian accented woman's voice answers over the cockpit speakers.

"Lord Goodness, is that you?"

A quick race through my memory brings up a name to go with the voice. Answer with a lower, more breathy sound to my voice.

"Rajeet! What an absolute pleasure to hear your irresistibly exotic voice once more. Have you got a pad for a good doctor's ship at hand?"

She answers with a chuckle.

"You are no Doctor Lord Goodness, not in the medical sene any way" Rajeet stops for a playful giggle. "I always have a place for you my Lord, how about the Inner Ring VIP lounge tonight at Twenty-Two Hundred hours?"

"Mmm I say, ding dong!"

Remember I'm not alone.

"I'll let you know my eastern empress, you see I've also miss-layed my pilots' identity. Could you send me a temporary access code to my hangers please, oh and prepare a ground crew to unload some tea on pad...?"

Rajeet responds with exaggerated shock at being asked to bend the rules regarding lots Pilots Federation IDs

"Goodness me Mr Goodness, you know I can't do a thing like that for anyone. Let alone someone who so often earns fines on this fine station"

A hanger accesses code appears on the Nav Display.

"Now put your tiny self down on pad 17 and do not ever ask me to break the rules again. Not until I can get my hands on you.. my Lord"

"Your the best Rajeet, I'll see you soon. Creamy out"

Resist the urge to show off my considerable landing skills in deference to Nerys' delicate condition, and gently offer the Fairytail to pad 17 bring us down for a soft landing. Unbuckle my self and go find my savior.

"I say, Ms Nymei? We've arrived and a ground crew is on the way. How are you feeling now Ms Hot-Shot-Stick-Jock?"
24 Mar 2020, 10:35am
While Creamy was... negotiating... the landing procedure, Nerys took advantage of the time to finally comb her hair, wear shoes and tidy up her clothes.

Creamy Goodness III
"I say, Ms Nymei? We've arrived and a ground crew is on the way. How are you feeling now Ms Hot-Shot-Stick-Jock?"

Nerys blushed. Then blushed harder.

"Oh, please" she sighed, lowering her eyes. "Don't mention it. Even better... if someone should ask, you avoided the interdiction, ok?"

She looked outside. The docking pad 17 was already alive with transport robots and ground crew.

"Let's recycle this stale air. Celeste, open the docking bay and the main hatch. I need to stretch my legs."

Jumping down the access ladder, Nerys gave a gentle pat on the Fairytale landing gear. "Good girl" she whispered. "I'm proud of you".

"So, Creamy, here we are. I'll stay here some hours to manage the selling of cargo, then probably I'll find something to buy and I'll return to Citi Gateway tomorrow or the day after. What are your plans?"
24 Mar 2020, 12:27pm
A cleve girl like Nerys must have her reasons not to take credit for her flying skills, and greater men than I have tried to work out the nuances of a woman's mind.  Shrug in silent agreement with Nerys' request.

"My plans are to help you get a good price for your tea, direct you a few systems over for a rear treat that will compliment you burnt-gold hair and make a good cargo for your next trip"

Pop back into the Fairytail to gather my bags and put them by the door. Realizing I have nowhere to put them once they are off the ship, slide down the ladder and join Nerys. Take in the sights and sounds of a familiar station and let the little smile play on my lips.

"First, I must see what assets, if any I have to play with here"

Take Nerys by the hand and lead her to a pilot's hanger terminal. Enter the code Rajeetgave me and start the registration process while talking with, or rather at Nerys.

"I don't think you appreciate just what you have done for me Ms Nymei. It is terribly bad form for a chap of my standing to let one's self fall as low as I have. An Imperial Lord is supposed to lead by example and always be seen as a capable man of civility and higher standards don'ch know"

Access the list of properties I own on this station and their value. Quickly offset that against the cost of the bills that have accumulated in my absence.

"Yet when I approached you, I was working in a bar as a cleaner about one hundred credits away from destitution without out even my own slate for communication and solitary entertainment on my many lonely evenings"

With three ships left and a Cobra to keep, make a choice that may be a bit to much for the kind Doctor. Turn to Nerys and take hold of both of her hands.

"After giving me the pleasure of your company over simple tea and cake, you then generously and without thought of reward offered to take me, a perfect stranger 300 light-years out of your way out of pure kindness.  You really are one of a kind Ms Nymei and the House of Goodness will not forget that. Once dad pops his clogs and I am The Count, that gratitude will count for something ay?"

Smile and laugh at my own little joke there.

"Now I have the means to sort out my situation thanks to you, I would like to show the proper gratitude as is fitting for a Lord of the realm. You showed a spot of interest in being a rim tripper and seeing what our Galaxy has to offer, I wonder Ms Nymei would you accept my Diamondback Explorer, the Bones Jumper as a right and proper show of thanks that you deserve? They are not my favorite model, always feel like flying a plastic box to me, but I am just going to sell it if you don't want it. I'd be much happier if it went to someone that would appreciate her.. .. Umm, feel free to rename it naturally"
