Elite roleplay: Off station

OFF STATION

Your ship, deep space, anything that is not happening inside the Citi Gateway or Ingaba...

General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

Amata LireinAmata looked at the doctor, this time taking a moment to inspect what she was able to see of the redhead's features while she was cleaning her glasses and now that there was time to do so. She smiled, then walked over to the sofa and sat down, crossing her legs, sitting in an elegant yet slightly seductive pose. "I hope you find something you like."

The contents of Amata's wardrobe were mostly dresses of various lengths, ranging from formfitting over daring to quite revealing, the only exceptions seem to be two spare made-to-measure white Remlok-suits.

Nerys jumped, startled... Obviously she had not heard Amata enter. She blushed, trying to keep the glasses and the towel in place. She succeeded... more or less.

"Oh" she said, a cute purple color on her cheeks. "Oh. Yes. The wardrobe. Thank you. I... well, you definitely have good taste in dressing, Amata. And in perfumes, too. I like all these clothes... but maybe it's better if I wear something... more... practical, I mean... suitable for a ship... like..."

She stopped, smiling shyly, touching one of the Remlok suits with a finger. The surface was incredibly smooth and just that simple contact was enough to made her shiver. This suit must cost a small fortune.
23 Sep 2020, 5:13pm
Amata smirked. "While I agree that you would look great in one of those I kind of doubt those two would fit you very well. Those are from Remlok's 'Exclusive'-line of suits. Each one is made-to-measure, so unless you happen to be my long-lost twin sister it would not fit properly. And to answer that next question on your mind: Yes, they aren't cheap, but completely worth it in my opinion. Very comfortable, and as you can see: unlike the standard suits they make you look gorgeous."

She stood up and walked over to Nerys with a subtile sway in her hips, looking over the doctor's shoulder into the wardrobe. "So I'm afraid unless you want to wear those sweaty work clothes again one of my dresses will have to do until we reached Burojinura, once there you can get a new suit for yourself." She looked at the blushing redhead and smiled. "And with a body like yours I have no doubt you would look quite stunning in one of those as well."

Nerys nodded, still touching the suit. Her own Remlok was a second-hand standard model, cheap and a bit worn-out on knees and elbows. It worked, yes, but this one was a totally different league.

And yes, it was beautiful. She imagined herself wearing one of them, then she thought of Amata... Definitely she would fill it much better than me, and...

Nerys swallowed, feeling Amata's gaze on her neck. "Uhm... thanks..." she answered, shrugging. "Maybe one day I'll have enough money for one of these... but... meanwhile... maybe... let me check..."

Her fingers fumbled in the wardrobe, searching for the less daring dress, but they all seemed to lack fabric in very important places. At last she chose a teal cocktail dress. It was extremely short, the neckline was deeper than a canyon and it left her back bare, but at least it was opaque.

"...this one" she said, not daring turning her head towards Amata who was so close to her. "And if... you could lend me a pair of flat shoes... it would be perfect."

Amata smiled, kind of enjoying watching Nerys' having to step out of her comfort zone. "I bet you'll look great in it." she tried to encourage her.

When asked about shoes she opened the cabinet at the buttom of the wardrobe, filled to the brim with high heels. "Sorry, no flats I'm afraid."

Well, this is it. The last 24 hours before Kolrami finally starts a long awaited expedition. He felt stable. He felt ready.

One quick trip to upgrade the hull, he promised himself. This time he stared into space, instead of a collection of liquor bottles lined up on a glass shelf. Look how the stars shined for him, his borderline alcoholism, and neurological dysfunction.

"Why didn't I get it done?", he exclaimed to himself, face-palming. This was a moment of regret from his visit to the barbers next to the bar he visited just hours ago. Kolrami was never good at making big decisions, and true to form had failed to decide what colour to dye his hair.

Usually it's either red, or a sort of shiny blue purple, inexplicably. But this time his hair ended up plain, simple, bla-ack. Maybe it was fitting, he pondered. After all, that was exactly where he was headed, in a navigational sense anyway.

"It really did have a good beat", Kolrami muttered, the Lavian groove still looping in his obsessive head.

Nerys shrugged. "Oh well, too bad... I suck at wearing heels, so I'll go barefoot until my shoes come out of the washing machine. It shouldn't take more than an hour."

She detached the dress from the hook and took a couple of steps towards the bathroom to get changed, then she stopped suddenly.

"Oh, by the way, Amata, could you please authorize me to contact my COVAS, on an encrypted channel of course? I'd like to check if she's ok".
25 Sep 2020, 1:44pm
Amata nodded. "Of course. Gerhard, you heard the lady, please see to it." "Of course, Commander. I will need the ship's name and registry though." the COVAS replied.
25 Sep 2020, 2:22pm
"Thank you, Amata" Nerys said. "The ship is the Fairytale 3, identifier Foxtrot Echo One Two One, hull number... wait, I mess with the Sidewinder... oh, yes, four eight one five one six two three four two".

She went into the bathroom and looked at the dress. Now, how am I supposed to squeeze into this thing? I hope not to rip it in half if I breathe too deeply.
25 Sep 2020, 2:40pm
Gerhard went to work right away. "Searching. Searching. Link to the Fairytale's COVAS established. Identification required."

Amata watched closely at Nerys' movements behind the frosted glass door, noticing her hesitation. "Like I said, you will look great in that dress, so don't worry about it."

DescartesA yone within hailing distance?

Where are you?
27 Sep 2020, 11:19am
Hawking's Gap. Wandering, lonely as a cloud...
saw no one for weeks
wishing I was home.

Descartes wanders about aimlessly.

Fuel reserves at twenty-five percent

"OK I'm coming, find me a fuel star. A red dwarf, I'm too lazy to play chicken with a hot neutron-thingy," says Descartes, looking around at the scattered clothes for a flight suit.  "This place is a mess. I suppose it's my turn to tidy up. It always is."

She effortlessly makes her way to the pilots seat, zipped up. Descartes always suited up and belted in when she took manual control for scooping, made too many errors in the past, and had a scarred cheek to remind her. "I'm so glad I had this modified" pulling the harness tight as the seat moulded itself to her shape. "Snug in all the right places".

"OK, lets go. Ready?" she asks, talking back over her shoulder, not expecting an answer. Fly close enough to scoop at seventy-five percent. "No hurry, we have all the time in the galaxy. No-one to jump us." Descartes runs an FSS while staying a safe distance. Everywhere explored already, nothing undiscovered or different. How many systems is that now, finding nothing.

Time to make a decision: keep jumping around half-way between Morgans rock and DSSA Ironside; Go on or go home; very few unexplored regions here, it could get better, but then what? Still thousands of light years from an inhabited system. Go back with a barely profitable expedition to my name. Go on  get rich, maybe, and still be far from civilisation.

Fuel scooping complete

Descartes looks back over her shoulder. Still silent, impassive, just there always there now. Some comfort. "You're not helping. I'm really struggling here."

Is their anybody out there. Please.

Amata LireinGerhard went to work right away. "Searching. Searching. Link to the Fairytale's COVAS established. Identification required."

Amata watched closely at Nerys' movements behind the frosted glass door, noticing her hesitation. "Like I said, you will look great in that dress, so don't worry about it."

Totally unaware of the show she was performing through the bathroom door, Nerys dropped the towel and studied the dress trying to understand how to wear it without ruining, ripping, damaging it. But of course it was an excellent and elastic fabric, so there were no real problems... except in her head, of course.

"Calling Celeste on Fairytale FE121" she said while sliding her legs into the dress. "Identification code November Echo Romeo Yankee Sierra. Maximum encryption".

Even with faster-than-light communications, the call had to be relayed through a dozen of different systems, so she had the time to adjust the dress over her shoulders. Why is this neckline so deep?

"Celeste speaking, Commander. I am happy to hear you."

Nerys smiled. Yes, she... it... was just a computer. It was not really an artificial intelligence, and all its "emotions" were actually just pre-programmed messages. Yet, she was her only friend.

"I am happy too, my girl. What's your status?"

"I am still in the private bay of the Union Workers. All my systems are nominal and the damages to the hull and the cockpit have been repaired."

"Awesome!"

"There is also an high priority message, Commander. Transmitting it now."

What ho Doctor
I trust you made it safely off the station aboard Amata’s ship without further trouble thanks to your capable escorts.
I have retrieved my new ship and left Citi Gateway behind. Beforehand, Ninette did as she was instructed and allowed Security access to prevent damage. I fear they may have left a transponder or some such device aboard.
Could you perhaps ask your friends if they could suggest an uninhabited system where we could rendezvous?
I’m currently in one such system, Col 285 Sector LJ-N B8-2. I look forward to hearing you are unharmed and safe.
Your humble servant CG

"Aknowledged, Celeste. I'll get in touch soon. Take care and stay safe"

"Yes, Commander. Out".

Excited, Nerys turned towards the bedroom to tell the news to Amata... and then she realized that the bathroom door was half open.

"Ehm" she said, blushing. "Well.. Creamy is ok".
29 Sep 2020, 9:21am
Amata inspected Nerys head to toe. "You know, you should wear something like that more often. You certainly have the necessary... 'requirements'." She winked at at the redhead. "If you don't believe me check yourself out in that mirror over there." she said, pointing at a full-body mirror next to the wardrobe.

Her smile gave way to a more serious and more importantly an angry facial expression. "To be honest: I don't care about that guy. His self-absorbed attitude almost got us killed merely a few minutes after he left us alone in that hotel. All because he needed to play with a defective service panel like he's five years old, resulting in him going viral on the stations intranet, giving away our location. He's proven himself to be a peril to us all. I wouldn't even be surprised if he managed to raise even more attention to himself afterwards, resulting in us being in even greater danger then before, all because he's unable to understand the importance of keeping a low profile."
29 Sep 2020, 2:34pm
Nerys lowered her eyes at the compliment, instinctively avoiding the mirror. "Thanks" she said, in a whisper, looking at her toes.

When Amata started the outburst, Nerys waited patiently, then she simply nodded.  "I understand" she said. "He is not exactly a champion of diplomacy... but he is a good man and a friend. At first, I thought that being in his company was dangerous for me... but now it seems that being in my company is dangerous for him... and for everyone around me. Although I still have no idea why. But he was hurt because of me, and I don't want that to happen to others. Maybe you should just... drop me somewhere until the dust will settle. Then I'll try to recover my ship and I'll check on Creamy. He is still my patient."
