Elite roleplay: Off station

OFF STATION

Your ship, deep space, anything that is not happening inside the Citi Gateway or Ingaba...

General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

Rex called down for enough noodles for two.

While waiting he dressed in Jeans and a blue button-down shirt with short sleeves.

As they ate he thought about Paul. Would he ever see his brother again? What would he say to him if he did?

It was a big galaxy, the chances were that if Paul was in hiding he'd have changed his name and hopped a freighter somewhere far away.

His mind snapped back to the present, and he glanced at Descartes.

"You don't look like a pilot right now", he referenced an earlier comment of hers.

"Ready to go?"

Descartes sucked a stray noodle into  her mouth.

"I'll just put some clothes on, shall I,?." she laughed. "What do I look like?"

Did he seem distracted somehow, or was she imagining? They really didn't know very much about each other. Her tough upbringing. Learning the hard way working for unscrupulous bosses and ship captains. The customer when she worked as cabin crew on a two-week sightseeing trip, who thought she was included in the price. He managed to corner her after a week of trying to grab her or put a hand up her skirt. He really thought his luck had changed when she didn't  remove his hand from her breast, instead reaching down to his groin, holding him. She gripped, squeezed, pulled, twisted and squeezed some more until his eyes were popping. Leaving him puking.  Walking oddly for the rest of the trip.

What had Raglans life been like. We all have a tale to tell

"A friend once told me that a question that guys always hate is, - 'what are you thinking about?  So  what's on your mind Raglan, you seem miles away. What are you thinking about.?" She  put a hand over his.

As she lay submerged in the bubbles from her Vincent Le Chenko Bath Bomb on the outside and full of bubbles from the 3219 Vintage Perrier-Jouët on the inside, Effie felt super relaxed. She keyed the intercom button and asked Kate to pop in, if the screens were clear of other traffic.

A few minutes later Kate stepped into the en-suite with an empty glass. “What’s up F?”

“I’ve been thinking about the deleted logs and what happened last week whilst you were back on Rhea visiting your Father?”

“Not much F, Dad’s the same as always, complaining about I haven’t married yet and why I insist upon ‘cavorting’ (as he puts it), throughout the Galaxy with you, getting up to no good”

“Did you see anyone else in Town?”

“No, not a soul. You told me to go in ‘silent’ and not advertise the fact I was back”. “You know I wouldn’t have risked it if Dad wasn’t so ill, Effie”.

Pouring herself a glass, she asked, “want me to do your back?”

“You sweetie”...

“WHAT’S THAT!” Kate shrieked!

A small lump, barely noticeable to the naked eye, was sitting right at the base of Her friend’s neck. Tiny, almost imperceptible.

“What do you mean?!” Effie asked.

Kate had known her best friend since their Cat Walk days back on the Rhea fashion circuit. The two girls had been quite in demand back then and were particular favourites of Jean Michelle Boatier. As a result, their lives had been spent in extremely close quarters, close enough for them to have a more than rudimentary knowledge of each other’s bodies. If there had been even the smallest of imperfections in her friend’s body, Kate would know it, probably even more so than any of Effie’s lovers, past or present.

“Hold on, stay right there F, I’m going to fetch the med. scanner”

Effie stepped out of her bath and wrapped herself in her robe...

The scanner beeped twice, there was no doubt. “It is some kind of beacon, F!”

The two women looked at each other with wide eyes. They now knew for sure, how they were being followed. “Get the fracking thing out of me NOW!” Said Effie.

A few moments later and without fuss, the little metallic cylinder was sitting on Effie’s jewellery dish by the sink.

“What are we going to do with it then” asked Kate, “ we can’t just kill it can we?”

“Jettison it out of the ship next to a Star as we come out of the next jump” Effie suggested

“But they’ll know that we’re onto them if the signal just goes dead like that and they’ll know where we were when they lost the signal!”

“Good point Kate!”

“What we need is someone to take our place! Any suggestions?”. Effie sat and looked at her friend, who’s face still look slightly horrified.

“How about getting the Chief and asking him to accidentally drop it under the deck plate of some random explorer’s ship?”

“Good idea Kate”. “Set course”

Kate dashed out of the cabin and as Effie stepped into the dryer, her thoughts turned back to JB and that disgusting robot. “Noodles are back on the menu! It certainly is a funny old world! She smiled as her mind turned back to more serious matters. “Felicia! This has to stop!”

She walked into the cockpit and sat in her chair next to Kate. Turning to her she asked, “When did they implant that!?”

“Well” said Kate, “it explains your temporary memory loss, so I guess it happened during the time I went back to Rhea to see Dad”. “What’s the last thing your remember after I boarded the cruise ship?”

“I’m not sure, let me think. Any coffee?”...

"A friend once told me that a question that guys always hate is, - 'what are you thinking about? So what's on your mind Raglan, you seem miles away. What are you thinking about.?" She put a hand over his.

"Just life, the way it works out", Rex let out a deep sigh
"Come on, we need to go spend some money, get dressed and we'll hit the markets"

It had been just a second or two, but he'd considered letting his guard down.
He was beginning to trust her, after years of not trusting anyone.
02 Dec 2020, 5:53pm
"My second favourite passtime - spending money!" Descartes didn't want to pressure him with questions.

She grabbed her small bag and disapeared into the bathroom. Rummaging around amongst her personal grooming bits and pieces she pulled out a battered old communicator, the sort of thing you 'hang on to, just in case', when you upgrade. She fired off a brief message to the old man 'Hi. Any suggestions for tourist hotspots in Lhou Mans ov Webb City?' It would get to him eventually.

A few minutes later she dressed in front of Raglan. Just a jumpsuit.

"OK, let's do it."
03 Dec 2020, 3:14pm
They left the hotel and walked slowly, side by side, toward the sho[pping district.
It was already quite busy, but they weren't worried about that.
For the most part, Rex didn't even notice it.

"There's a nice looking open air market here", he said

"It's apparently modelled on the ones they had on earth back in the 20th century", he paused.
"I just realised I sound like a tour guide", he laughed

"maybe we can pick up a few bargains"
03 Dec 2020, 6:33pm
Effie looked down as if to be considering the fruit on the Market Stand as a couple approached, so deep in each other’s company that they didn’t notice as she dropped a tiny cylindrical object into the guy’s jacket pocket as they strolled past.

Effie turned and headed straight back toward the Docks.
03 Dec 2020, 6:43pm
"I'm happy to be guided, let's see what takes your fancy!" Descartes smiled, keeping close.

It was busy, very busy, and looked as if you might find anything you want.  Food - vegetables and spices;  gold,  jewellery, cloth and clothes, animals, souvenirs, pots and pans, junk. Descartes grabbed his arm and held him even closer. She wouldn't like to get separated - not that it was dangerous neccesarily, but finding the way out might be.
03 Dec 2020, 11:29pm
“You did WHAT?!” Asked Kate

“Look, it’s not like they’ll come to any harm, Felicia’s goons aren’t completely dumb, they’ll see immediately that those two are nothing to do with me.

The only problem is, we won’t be there to see the look on Felicia’s face when they tell her what’s happened? Effie grinned.

By they time they file their report, we’ll be 1,000 light years across the bubble.

Amata LireinAmata smirked. "Like we just said, you can have the bunk in the co-pilot's quarters. Jason will use mine once I relieve him in the cockpit. You can sleep until we get there, then you should be well rested and can concentrate on Ao alone." She then looks at Jason with a smile. "Wake me once we're half way there, will you?"

After finshing her food she turned towards Nerys again. "That was very good, thank you."

Nerys smiled. "Thanks" she replied. "Just a quick thing. Maybe one day I'll show you something more elaborate".

Then sreached the co-pilot quarters and removed carefully the dress to not ruin it.

Sitting on the bed, she re-read Creamy 's message.

Something is not right she thought... but she was so tired to not be able to think clearly. She wanted to tell him a lot of things, but now she was afraid to tell them in a bad way. Yet, she needed to answer.

"Message to Creamy Goodness" she ordered to her wrist scanner, in a croaky voice. "I'll come as soon as I'll have done everything I can to save Ao. This is a promise!".

Then she touched the SEND icon... and crashed on the pillow.

Amata winked at Nerys. "I'm looking forward to it."

She then headed to her own quarters and laid down into her own bed, crossing her hands behind her head. After pondering the current situation a bit she turned towards the nearby terminal. "Gerhard, send a message to my parents. Ask them to find out whatever they can about Creamy Goodness III. Add a copy of the last communication with him and Captain Yamamoto, that should explain to them what happened and that he might cause trouble in the future." After Gerhard confirmed the transmission she closed her eyes, trying to get some sleep before Jason asks her to take over the helm.

They walked together, stopping at various stalls to peruse the goods on offer.

Stopping at a clothing stall, Rex selected 3 T-shirts and haggled over the price until he struck a deal. This was almost second nature to him, getting the best price he could. Something he'd learned when he was a kid from his father.

"Seems like we hit tourist season with all these people"

He watched as Descartes looked through the clothes on offer as well.

Slowly looking around him, he took in everything. He was always watchful wherever there was a crowd.

"Think I might treat myself to a new jacket as well, this one's getting a bit frayed after so many months hanging around spaceport docks"
04 Dec 2020, 1:43pm
Descartes smiled. "Looks OK  to me, for work anyway, but it's always a good idea to own more than one."

She picked up a few things and put them down again.  They walked on a little further.

"Look at this, " she said holding up something that resembled a short thin strappy-looking dress. "who designs stuff like this, who would wear it?"

She held it in front of herself, laughing. "What do you think?! "And no, I'm not buying it, before you get any ideas!"
04 Dec 2020, 9:00pm
"Needs more blue" he retorted

He moved over to the next trader, and picked up a pair of faux leather gloves.
Trying them on for size he wrinkled his nose and decided the were not right for him.

Looking around again he scanned for a stall selling flying jackets

"See anything you fancy?" he asked, looking back at Descartes.
