Elite roleplay: Off station

OFF STATION

Your ship, deep space, anything that is not happening inside the Citi Gateway or Ingaba...

General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

JB sat in his cell, he could play the harmonica but it seemed a bit obvious to be playing it in The Clink. Instead he just lay on the bottom bunk in his cell and casually kicked the bottom of his cellmate's mattress.

"Threepwood!" called one of the guards from outside of his cell. JB stopped annoying his cellmate briefly enough to look at the guard. "The Governor says you've got someone coming in to bail you out. Get your shit together."

JB sat up on his bunk and stretched a little.

"Looks like I'm getting out of here," JB said to his cellmate.

"I really hope you die," came his reply.

An voice filled the cockpit of the Unicorn, Alphonse, a less advanced copy of Leo from the Yamato spoke:
"Warning! An unidentified heat signiture has been detected, relative bearing 210 degrees by -10 degrees.
Sensors indicate hardpoints are deployed"
Commander Edge cursed loudly:
"Red Alert! All hands to battle stations, fighters, emergency sortie, divert power to the sheilds and weapons!"

The normally bright cockpit went dark, before being bathed in an eerie red light.
The whirr of machinery as the turreted beam lasers and multi cannons extended from the hull and the Unicorn's engines flared to life as the hulking cutter, setup as a fighter carrier and support ship turned about to face the incoming hostile.

"Commander Edge to Kongo and Starlight Lady, defenceive formation B, protect the Arstarte at all costs! Lupus in Fabula! We are the Wolf, speak our name and we shall come!"

The Kongo, a python gunboat, every hardpoint loaded with corrosive multicannons and packhound racks took up position between in incoming signal and the Arstarte, starlight lady moved into position above and behind the Arstarte, deploying its own hard points, standard mix of pulse lasers and multi cannons, with one exception; The turreted repair beam mounted in the starboard nacelle, it turned on the Astarte and fired on low power.
As long as the starlight lady could maintain weapon power, the Astarte could not be harmed.

The opening wave of the attack reached them in moments:
The incoming limpets were quickly turned to dust by the defending ship's point defence systems.

The two condor fighters, both rigged for speed and sheild breaching began their run.
The paid tore through the night, it was difficult to make out the ship type at this distance but the telltale glint of the cockpit screen was clearly visable in the starlight.

They opened with a quick one - two style attack, one behind the other the two fighters strafed along the hull of the attacking ship, taking special care to land as many hits as possible on the glass.
On their own fighters will only do minor damage to even modest shields, but still the psyhological effect of knowing that if those shields had failed that blast would have melted your face would make even the most battle hardned commander wet their remlock.

"Alphonse, relay all battle data to my heads up display and send an emergency ping to the starwolf with our location requesting support, there is no garuntee there is only the one ship!"

"Aye Aye, ping is away"

"Hanging it out there for this thug aren't you commander?" Said the bond officer.

"Yes I may be, but as I recall that is my business. Now instead of giving me grief for the next half an hour like you have for last, and playing 20 questions with me, with all due respect, show me where I sign, where I pay, and bring out my associate please." I said rather grumpily.

Man this process takes forever. Of course rousting them all out of bed probably was not the best choice, but I have places to go and goods to move, and the thought of sitting in the hanger of this stinking barge any longer then I have to made me start the hassel and not let these chumps sleep.

He rather rudely presented me the memo board to sign, presented the credit chip reader, and then told them to "fetch the trash" over his wrist com. I don't think he was very impressed with the hard look I gave him when he said it.

I stood around for another 20 damn minutes until finally a hatch slid open and two guards came in escorting JB, "He looks like hell I thought to myself", as they rather rudely started to remove the electronic restraints from his hands and ankles. Another door slid open and another clown came in and threw a laundry bag on the ground at my feet, "His garbage, inventory it and sign here" and he had a memo board in his hand.

I think the guy did not believe I would inventory it. I did.

"Where is his jewelry?" I said

"There is none" the guard replied.

"According to your memo board there should be a ring and a neck chain, where the hell are they?" I asked rather demandingly

"Now listen here scum, don't you take that tone of voice with me or you will be a new addition to the population here, I said there is none!"

I looked over at JB and he shook his head in a manner that told me to drop the subject. I reached out and signed the memo board, and looked at JB "Can you follow along or do you need me to help, you look like hell man. The faster we get on board and blow this shit hole, the happier I will be."

I don't think the staff much liked my view of their fine ship.

"Nah... I'm good, mate," JB said, slinging his bag over his shoulder. "Thanks for doing this. All our spare pilots have been dragged onto a big contract over the other side of the bubble and I didn't want to pull any of them away. As soon as our lawyer sprung the deal with the Governor I just wanted to get out of this crooked dump... and there's no way that spineless little shit lawyer was gonna fly out here by himself."

JB walked alongside Spud as they headed towards the docks.

"They froze my account when I got pulled so I'll sort you out for this when we get back. Did everything go ok with that Tritium job back on Gateway?"
03 Jan 2021, 11:19pm
"Everything went very well, all was delivered, contract filled and I believe Robert was happy.  Happy enough he paid us a bonus of 35% on top.  Lets get aboard, do you have anywhere in particular you want to go, or should I head for Nouvel and sort stuff out there?"

I pushed a button and the hatch dropped open, Sylvia standing there with a blaster in her hands... I smiled. "Put it by Sylvia, its just us and get in the seat and fire this bitch up, its time to make high wake"
03 Jan 2021, 11:51pm
Boarding the ship, JB tapped away at his Comms device.

"Nouvel's fine, mate. I'll get Panza to fly The Cuckoo over and pick me up when he's done. The Organisation can put money into a shell account and Panza will pay you from that." JB watched as Sylvia headed towards the cockpit. "Who's your new pilot?"

"My new pilot is novice I hired from Nouvel, she is sharp and pretty good in the drop ship. This Krait flys well, and has proven to be my best friend in my limited combat experience as a fighter pilot." I turned up the gangway, "Sylvia! High wake to the first uninhabited system, then the next, then take us home, scoop only, no landings.!" Sylvia replied "Aye Skip"

As I felt the docking clamp release, I looked at JB, "Lets get to the ward room, I will get food and drink ready, and the bot can fix up some that damage the guards did to you. What the hell happened mate? Oh and dont worry about the money end of it, favors for favors at this point. Fuck em."
04 Jan 2021, 1:15pm
"Nah.... it's nothing I can't walk off, mate, a comfy seat'll do me."

JB dug around in his bag and found his hipflask, gave it a little rattle.... empty.

"Although a touch of the hard stuff might be just what the doctor ordered. I've only been drinking toilet wine for the last week."

JB filled Spud in on the events before his arrest. The huge party thrown for getting Barboni to safety, the swarm of revellers aboard the armada of "Party Orcas" as they did a system crawl of hotspots across the bubble... to getting into a row with the jumped-up Wing Commander at the underground cockfight. JB told Spud how the police had caught up with him later that evening after he'd "curbed" the commander's teeth on a nightclub bathroom's sink.

"I don't suppose you'd noticed a couple of good looking girls knocking around Gateway before you left?" JB asked; his thoughts, as they had done over his short incarceration, returning to the couple of nights he'd spent with Effie.

Effie woke sharply from a deep sleep. “Weapons fire!!! She jumped out of bed and ran toward the flight deck in just her her PJ’s.

The flight deck door slid open and she saw Kate at the helm, zigging and zagging through an asteroid field, shooting at a small but very agile fighter.

Just as she sat in the second chair, she remembered. “Of course” she thought, “it’s just Kate putting the new fighter pilot though his paces!”

“How’s he doing?” She asked Kate.

“He’s good” said Kate, not looking up, “but I’m not stopping the test until I’ve hit him”

Just then, the Condor pulled a back flip and came straight at them. The two vessels passed close enough for Jim to have seen that Effie was now on the flight deck of the Gunship as he zoomed passed their canopy. His voice came crackling over the comms speakers, “Nice PJ’s Effie!” He laughed like a Pirate.

Kate retracted her hard points and recalled the fighter, “That’ll do Jim. Return to Mother and we’ll debrief over breakfast.”

“Copy that Kate. Docking now”

Kate turned in her chair toward her friend. “Bunnies!” She roared. “Good luck living that down girl!”

Effie tilted her head slightly to one side and turned her hands palms up, “what’s a girl to do?” She giggled. “Can you set the ship on course for the first system en route to drop our Guest off at the rendezvous with his Fleet and I’ll meet you guys in the Galley in a minute”

“No worries Eff” replied Kate.

Effie got up and headed back to her cabin.

I walked over to the bin and pulled out a bottle of old Sol and set it in front of JB with a glass, and then sat down listening to the comforting hum of the ship as the FSD wound up, opened the com speaker so I could listen for anything important and poured myself a couple of fingers.

"Funny you should mention those two, yeah one was that woman, the one I saw you with a couple of times, Descartes I believe her name is, and yes another pretty woman as well was with her, and some dandy fellow following along like a love struck puppy. They headed for the docks about the same time I headed out to move Tritium.  I thought the seen was rather amusing."

The jolt of the first jump took hold, "When we get closer I will com ahead, I know a couple of folks you might well be interested in meeting.  One is an ex interstellar factor that has somehow managed to hack the system, Toad can be very very handy and he works for the good stuff." tapping the bottle with a smile.
04 Jan 2021, 11:52pm
"Always happy to make a new friend."

"Descartes" thought JB. It seemed strange to hear her name, It was a name he hadn't thought about for a while.

They'd met a short time back, he felt like they had a lot in common but never saw her again. He'd often wondered what had happened to her and if they'd meet again.

"Here's to you, buddy," JB said, raising his glass to Spud.

Raglan gave her the look again.

"As I recall, you were hightailing out of that bar so quick your butt was just a blur. I didn't get a good look till much later!"

He grinned

He looked around at the rest of the clientele and relaxed.

"Best we get an early night, the sooner we get back the sooner I can get some runs done. Didn't you say you have a job to do as well?"

It was not like Descartes to blush, but that's how Raglan made her feel when he mentioned her backside.

"Yeah, I have a few things to catch up on. Pick-ups and drop-offs. And I'm going to take the Golden Viper out for some aimless fun."

It had been some time since she'd had a visit from any or her earworms - warning, offering advice, chastising. Not since she started spending time with Raglan in fact. No doubt they would return when she started spending time alone in the void. She needed a plan to follow and fulfill.

She sat closer. "I'm going to miss you Raglan. Make sure you don't stay away too long. Shall we go?"
05 Jan 2021, 9:46pm
I felt the docking clamps take hold as we touched down in Nouvel, I am sure there are 100 psuedo gators waiting out there for me to deal with in the squad but right now I really dont care.

I looked over at JB "Lets get you a room and then I will meet you down at the lounge for a steak, they do pretty good here."

"Thanks Sylvia, as always your service is most appreciated, you are welcome to join us for dinner."

"I'll be in the lounge in about 40 minutes, need to clean up real quick."

as I hit the button for the hatch to drop.
06 Jan 2021, 12:21am
Steak... the magic word. His steak with Effie and Kate was the last good meal he'd had. There was food laid on at the function Barboni had put on but, frankly, that was just an excuse for a piss-up.

"Steak sounds good, mate. Once I can sort myself a room I'll get cleaned up and come down."

After the past week, JB felt like he could sleep for a month... but steak and the company of a friend were more than enough to tempt him away from a comfy bed for a while.

JB's copilot Panza would still take a few more days to reach Nouvel in The Cuckoo, so JB decided to make the most of his downtime.
06 Jan 2021, 12:44am
She sat closer. "I'm going to miss you Raglan. Make sure you don't stay away too long. Shall we go?"

"Don't worry, I'll be back before you know it" he reassured her.

As they stood up he took her hand.

"I'll program my comm code into your ship system when we get to Inara, that way we can videocall so you can see I'm still alive"

They headed back to the hotel slowly.
