Elite roleplay: Off station

OFF STATION

Your ship, deep space, anything that is not happening inside the Citi Gateway or Ingaba...

General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

Rex thought for a moment.

"Killers?", he looked quizzically at her, "Is there something I should know?"

He switched gears.
"Personally I don't plan on selling any ship I buy if I don't need to, I may need a smaller ship one day and I'd prefer to have one readily available. I'm close to getting my Cobra soon, a couple more decent trips should do it."

He slid his arm around her waist.

"Of course, if I keep having holidays and spending like this, it may be three or four more trips. Think you could live without me for that long?"

"Well there's always a chance of running into someone who holds a grudge." She replied, looking down at the ground. "Nothing sinister, no secrets there." Descartes lied, thinking, 'Their are a few'.

She felt very comfortable with his arm around her waist, close, very close. Normally it would have been unwelcome, too possessive.

'He's considering moving on to do a job.' She thought. 'Probably has bills to pay. 'Better make sure he comes back.'

She put a hand in his back pocket and steered him towards a clothes shop. there were few customers and no apparent staff. Grabbed a few dresses and pushed him into a changing room.

"Hold these" passing him the frocks she slipped out of her jumpsuit.

"Better make the most of our time before you fly off to earn an honest living." She unzipped his pants and spent the next fifteen minutes reminding him what he would be missing.

"Better buy something to wear now. You choose." She said, holding up the new clothes.

"The blue one, and the yellow one", he laughed.

He wasn't sure how to say what he needed to say next.

Thinking it over as he watched her dress, he formulated a plan.
He hoped it would work for both of them, and was the best compromise he could think of.

"Well, I certainly do need to grind some more soon, just to reach my next goal"

He reached out and stroked her face as she looked at him as if ready to hear bad news.

"How about if we head back to Citi tomorrow, then I can take some local runs for a while. I don't mind basing myself there for a while until I get the cobra squared away"

He looked into her eyes

"Once I've done that it'll give me more scope, and more earning potential. Then we can talk about doing some work together."

Amata LireinShe nodded. "I see."

She rolled onto her side and sat up properly so she could take a look at the nearest terminal, checking on their current position before looking at Jason again.

"I guess that means you'd like to join them as soon as you can?" It sounded more like she's pointing out a fact then asking a question.

Amata left her cabin, a bit sad about what Jason and herself were talking about, but she headed to the cockpit nontheless. After strapping herself in she plotted a course towards the carrier in the Marrallang system, a flight that should take only a few more jumps.

A few jumps later...

As soon as the Astarte left witchspace facing the primary star of the Marralang system Amata parked the Python close enough to the sun so the fuelscoop could refuel the ship. Afterwards she carefully checked the sensors, not only looking for ships that might have hostile intentions, but also looking for one of the three ships that Captain Yamamoto said would provide them with an escort to the carrier: the I-402 Unicorn, the TS-04 Kongo and the TS-03 Starlight Lady.

Descartes wore the blue one. Smiling. Looking in the mirror, decided that it wasn't too revealing, although it was a long time since she had worn a dress in public. Would feel very conspicuous, exposed, vulnerable - again!

"Sounds like a plan." She said, making her way out of the dressing room and paying for both. Then made arrangements to get the rest, and her jumpsuit, delivered to the hotel.

"I feel like eating Sushi and hot crispy tempora, let's find a place on the street."

"Have you anything lined up? I've a few contacts. I also have a little job to do myself, and an old Viper that want to make go faster. Any tips?"

She wasn't sure about being based at the Gateway - always felt restless and not too safe there.

As they wandered along to the sushi bar, he held her hand tightly.

"I gained a fair bit of rep with all the carto data I handed in when I arrived, so I'll check the boards and see if I can stack a few courier jobs"

He already had enough to get the new ship, but wanted a reserve for insurance

"I'll give you my comms code in case you want to check up on me", he smiled at her again.

"If we both take care of our jobs over the next couple of days, we can maybe work on the viper together. A decent FSD and thrusters should be your first priority I would think"

They reached the Sushi bar and took a quiet corner booth.

She looked puzzled when he giggled

"I was just remembering what happened the last time I was in a corner booth and you were around..."

The I-402 Unicorn dropped from supercruise onto the Arstarte's wake, the blue and white hull of the cutter semmed to glitter in the starlight, she was quickly followed by the Kongo and the Starlight Lady.

Commander Mike Edge pulled up the comms channel and locked onto the Arstarte's signal:
"Calling commander Lierin, this is commander Edge, Captain of the BWSF Unicorn, I'm glad to see you guys made it here safe, I'm sending you over a wing invitation now"

One of the triglaive Hammerhead Corvette's has been sitting there all along. In the dark, dumping heatsinks while staying off of both the Unicorn and the astarte's sensors. those two ships are together, and they seem.. how should i say...pudient.. maybe , ill trail along Cephy thought to himself, there might be some credits to be ripped out these two.

The Anaconda speeds along in supercruise across the system from Citi Gateway, towards preset coordinates for a hyperspace jump that is currently being obstructed by the system's star. Anders had a disdain for those kinds of jumps, but alas, he cannot do anything about it other than moving to an unobstructed position within the star system.

The trip was going well until he was suddenly interdicted. The ship shook as the Anaconda's pursuer tried to pull it out of supercruise, Anders tried to maneuver it towards the escape vector, but it was clear that his pursuer was winning. Thinking fast he decided to go for the lethal option. He immediately set his throttle to zero and as soon as the ship returns to real space, he immediately set max pips to shields and the rest to weapons, then promptly deployed his hardpoints. His weapons consisted of all multicannons, all built for continuous fire, except for the largest cannon. That one was equipped with corrosive ammunition, sure the ammunition was larger, but it let him tear through armor faster than a hot knife through butter.

Scanning his scanner, he soon spotted his would-be thief, a Fer-de-Lance. The Fer-de-Lance opened a comm channel to Anders, "Alright, I know your ship contains something my employers want. Drop it." Anders smirks, knowing that his pursuer is too late for his cargo, replies "Gotta be a lot faster than that, fatty." "A shame. Oh well. You'll die as you lived, a fucking joke." the Fer-de-Lance replies before powering up its weapons and going full throttle towards the Anaconda.

Knowing full well that he can't outrun nor outmaneuver this one, he decided to go full reverse to give himself as much time as possible to put as much lead as possible on this vessel. Soon enough, the Fer-de-Lance entered his gun range, but Anders held off until it was within 2km to make each bullet count. The FDL gave out an opening salvo of torpedoes, which was shot down by the Anaconda's PD guns, then came the barrage of PA fire. At this point, the FDL was well-within the effective range of the multicannons, and Anders began blasting away his weapons at the FDL.

Sure enough, the FDL's shields were immediately down right before it passed over him, and Anders immediately set forward thrust to give chase to the FDL, switching his pips to 4 WEP and 2 SYS so as to keep his guns powered for continuous fire. A chase ensues, as the FDL tried to outrun and outmaneuver the Anaconda long enough for its shields to regenerate. Unfortunately, the unrelenting fire from the multicannons chipped away at the FDL's hull and armor and soon enough, the ship started to erupt.

Anders gave a sigh of relief, then reset his pips to standard setting. He decided to proceed with the supercruise once more, reaching his intended spot. Charging his FSD again, he took one look of the scenery in front of him before his ship went into hyperspace towards its next destination. Once the FSD was ready, he throttled up again, and was soon out of the system.

Cmdr Leiring has been under The trigliave's scope for quite some time. "These guys are dealing with the tech we need, we must pursuit this lead" Cephy, remembered hearing at high command briefing about a year ago. And there it was, clear confirmation that the target of our investigation was confirmed nearby. The heavy escorting means the value of the cargo is equal if not greater, could this be it? Do they have the tech on board. Can a single triglaive Hammerhead do anything? a rush of questions went through Cephy's mind in mere seconds. What to do next seemed like the right problem to solve right now, but what the answer was, eluded Cephy continuously. "Heatsink deployed" the warning from the computer reminds him, he doesn't have much time left that last one only barely brought us to eighteen percent, he thought. In the absence of a plan,do nothing, he remembered reading somewhere in some ancient earth book. Perhaps we shall sit and wait, then it came. The successive beeping of the hull temperature sensor. Temperature alert the computer reads , twety-two percent, then training kicked in, there is only one thing to do Cephy thought, to hell with tactics and phylosophy. TIME TO BE BOLD. Full power to engines !!!! open heat vents overheat thrusters!!! commands are being pushed into the computer quicker than it can react to the input. the alrms blare. we are detectable now Bill yells at me from the back seat, are we really doing this boss? Shut up bill, Cephy replied, I pay you to shoot when i say shoot you shoot friend. Right now the Arstarte is fourteen kilometers ahead give me everything to engines, its GO time!, a year of work is right there...Passsing right by the Kongo and barely missing the Starlight, To which bill only had one thing to say in his usual cationary tone," that one was closeeeeee!!! im in range of Arstarte, 4 kilometers, in range bill is reading out of his display. As cephy inputs the last commands hes going to for this move, he closes his eyes, full power to shields, deploy hardpoints, launching hatch breaker limpets... then a battle prayer from his ancestors....

JB sat at the canteen table and looked up at the small screen. It was around midday Local Planetary Time but it was closing in on Midnight UGT throughout the galaxy.

The presenters on the TV show were stood in a crowd, looking up at a big clock and counting down to midnight. Some of the other convicts in the canteen joined in with the countdown.

JB was pushing some of his shitty dinner around his steel dinner tray as he watched the big clock as it readied to chime.

Suddenly, JB felt the heavy whack of a meal-tray across the back of his head. He turned in his seat and grabbed his aggressor's arm as the burly man swung for another hit. JB recognised him as some meatball from a rival faction.

Much to the cheers of the other inmates, JB pulled his attacker onto the canteen table and started raining punches down on his face.

"CONVICTS!" yelled a voice over the PA system as a klaxon started to sound, "AGAINST THE WALLS!"

A mix of the cheers from the other inmates, the sound of music blasting from the TV, and the blood boiling in his veins made JB oblivious to the fact that the riot guards were flooding into the penal colony canteen.

The guards piled in, beating JB across his body and the back of his head with stun-truncheons, sending him to the floor where a pair of cuffs were swiftly attached. A couple of hands on the scruff of his prison-peels helped him to his feet.

Prisoners, lined up against the walls of the canteen, were still cheering JB on as several guards dragged him out of the prison canteen.

It was his own stupid fault he was there. A two-day drinking session had ended with him getting pulled for an aggravated assault charge, something his organisation's pettifoggers could get him out of, but it looked like he'd be doing a huge chunk of his remaining sentence in The Hole.

"Happy Fuckin' New Year," JB thought to himself as was led away to solitary.
02 Jan 2021, 4:40am
Happy New year, that's what I went to sleep on, but in reality, in my mind its always been just another 24 hours.  Sweet dreams, as I rolled over, wrapped my wife up and drifted off.

"BLEEP!" "BLEEP!" "BLEEP!" "BLEE.."

I slammed my hand on the communicator before it could finish, set it to text only, and opened it. "Commander, you have a priority incoming message from Tinman, may I put it through?"

Who the hell is Tinman I thought to myself still groggy with sleep. I typed back "yes do so"

"Spud_ you dont know me, I work with JB, and he is in the can, the have him on prison ship XCB-34A, 36mil credit bond, I can not get there, can you?  If you cannot respond in 18 hours, I will turn to other sources."

I scratched my head, could be a trap I suppose, but doesn't seem likely... 36 million? oofta... thats pretty serious.  I thought for a moment, ok.

I typed back, "Sylvia, let Tinman know I've got it, I'm on the way, also have FLS Hunter pre=flighted and ready to go in 20 mins, oh and have the crew pull that cargo rack out and put in a Lux passenger cabin. Spud clear"

"Yes Commander"

The wife rolls over and looks at me... "Your going someplace?"

"Yes hun, sorry, but business."

"YOU AND BUSINESS! WONT EVER STOP WILL YOU! Not even for one night!  Well go on then, get the hell out of here."

As I put my gear on, I realized, I was going to have to do something really good to make this one up, the door panel closed behind me as I headed for the hanger.  Maybe I will buy her a Clipper, she always fancied a big yacht.

If you walk a straight line in the direction of rotation around the circumference of a rotating space station you will, after one circumnavigation, return to the point of departure.

If you walk at a slight angle to the left or right of the direction of rotation, your path will, after numerous circumnavigations, trace a helix around the circumference of the station from one end to the other, without ever stepping on the same spot twice.

Descartes and Raglan wandered along, deep in thought or idle conversation, 'small talk', without taking much notice of their surroundings.  One block on the modular station looked much like any other, if you didn't look too closely. After a while they realised that they were following the second path. It took a long, long time, and several rotations before the reached the sushi bar.

"The way I remember it, you were checking out my butt as we left." Joked Descartes.

They ate sushi. "Shall we leave tomorrow?"
02 Jan 2021, 5:09pm
He gave her the look again.

"As I recall, you were hightailing out of that bar so quick your butt was just a blur. I didn't get a good look till much later!"

He grinned

"Yeah, if we leave tomorrow I can pick up the Space Mini and get some work done. After that I'll take a few days to get the new ship kitted out for some trading and a bit of light mining"

He looked around at the rest of the clientele and relaxed.
"Best we get an early night, the sooner we get back the sooner I can get some runs done. Didn't you say you have a job to do as well?"
