Elite roleplay: Off station

OFF STATION

Your ship, deep space, anything that is not happening inside the Citi Gateway or Ingaba...

General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

“Mork calling Orson”

“Mork calling Orson”

“Come in Orson”

Kate’s voice came clearly across the Rocinante’s onboard PA.

Effie nearly spat coffee all over the console. “Orson here” she laughed. There was never a day when her friend didn’t make her laugh.

“Listen Eff, Jim’s got a plan. We’re on our way back to Mother now.” Said Kate excitedly.

“What’s your ETA?” Asked Effie. “I’ll put the kettle on”

“I’ll be back in twenty five minutes, but the way Jim drives, he won’t be home till next Wednesday!” Kate said, quite seriously.

“Copy that” Effie rolled her eyes.

“Cheska, go and check the hold for vermin”...
15 Jan 2021, 10:06am
In the airlock, Jim helped Kate out of her EVA suit and she in turn helped him. “That was fun” she said, “but I hope it wasn’t a total waste of time”

Effie’s voice came over the PA, “I’m in the Salon”

They stowed their gear and the door hissed as it opened into the ship’s interior and they headed on through to the Salon to put their plan to Effie.

They all sat around the central table where Effie had placed flasks of fresh coffee out for them. “So, how’d it go out there?” She asked.

“Not as well as we’d hoped” replied Jim, “but not a total bust, at least not if my plan works”.

He pulled out his tablet and began to sketch something on it. His workings were projected into a 3D hologram in the middle of the table in front them.

Continuing on, he explained his idea to repair the Rocinante’s canopy. “Kate and I removed the central section of that old Viper’s canopy glass. It has a nice, flat profile to it. I think that we can bond it in place directly on top of the cracked portion of our central canopy section.”

“Will that even work?” Asked Effie, “Will it hold up to the stress of jumping into and out of Witchspace? We’ve got at least six jumps to perform to reach civilisation! Couldn’t we simply weld a piece of bulkhead over the window instead, like armour plating?”

“Thought of that” said Kate, “but Jim doesn’t know how that would effect our ability to navigate, because the entire HUD and Sensors are tied directly into the Canopy glass itself and most likely we won’t be able to see any of the display. We wouldn’t know which way was up, not that there is an ‘up’ in space, but you know what I mean”

“Well that sucks” said Effie

“I think it’s worth a go Effie” Jim continued, “bonding glass directly over the top of the existing canopy glass, I believe there will be enough integrity retained in the ships HUD systems, by keeping the original glass in place, to enable us to navigate our way to an inhabited system and into a Station for repairs.  It’ll be too opaque to actually see through, with all the gloop, obviously, but we can still peer through the two glass sections either side of the main screen, to help us line up to the slot when it’s time”

Effie turned to Kate, “Do you think it’ll work, Kate”

“I think so. Welding over the screen would require the cracked canopy to be removed, due to the heat applied by the weld, which would explode the glass anyway, and we don’t think the HUD will work at all without the glass. The thing is Eff, no one has done this before and it’s not as if we can call up Core Dynamics Aftercare hotline to ask them if it’ll work either”

“Shall I get started?” Asked Jim, finishing his coffee.

“It’s late Jim and you two must be dog tired already. Why not wait until you’ve both had some sleep? Get started fresh in the morning” suggested Effie.

“Sounds good to me” said Kate, “I’m going to have a shower and  then get my head down.”

Jim rose from the table, “in that case” he said, “I’ll bid you fine ladies good night”...

JB dropped into the Inara system.

Being in the local area, his short-range Comms lit up from one of his contacts on Citi Gateway.

"*Gaffer, clean under your nails if you're Eastbound And Down... Dibble's low-waking and there's some J-Cats bouncing around Gateway. I'll ping when the Bears are hibernating*"

"10-4 and in the wind," JB replied.

Turning The Cuckoo around, JB headed towards Bombelli Hub until Citi Gateway was a bit more approachable.

After waking early, Effie’s shipmates had worked tirelessly all morning and whilst it wasn’t pretty, the canopy repair was complete.

“Well” said Effie, as Jim and Kate walked into the Cockpit, “If we die, at least I’ll know who to blame!”

“Don’t look at me” replied Kate, turning to Jim with a wink.

“Alright then Boss, where are we going?”

“Citi Gateway. We ran out of booze yesterday and if we make it back alive, I’m going to need a stiff drink” Effie replied with a smile.

“And I don’t suppose the choice of destination has anything to do with, you know who, does it!” suggested Kate.

“No idea what you mean” giggled Effie.

You know who?” Asked Jim

“You’ll find out” laughed Kate

“Are we sitting comfortably? Effie asked from the command chair. “”Then I’ll begin” She hit confirm on the first jump coordinates and pushed the vertical throttles into action. Rocinante lifted off from the planet surface in a cloud of dust. At 30 metres Effie pointed her nose to 90 degrees, pushed the main engines to max and hit the big red boost button on her stick.

As the ship bucked and kicked into orbit, she engaged the FSD the moment they were free of the gravity.

“So, we’re taking it easy on the repairs then!” Declared Jim

The Ship’s computer announced, “Ready to jump in 5, 4, 3, 2, 1”

“Here goes nothing shouted” Kate over the din of the engines...

“Coming up on Inara any minute” Kate called through to Effie, who was in her Cabin doing whatever an Effie does in a cabin when alone.

“Be right there” Effie replied over the intercom. “Jim, the moment we drop into the system, can you set up a scan of the Nav Beacon and see if there’s any trace of a ship called the Cuckoo in the logs, please”

“Sure thing Boss” he replied.

“I’ll put a call into our old friend the Deck Chief before we approach the Station and see if he’s heard anything about the Cuckoo, too, if you like” offered Kate.

“Thanks guys” there was a short pause from Effie, then, “damn these boots! I’ve just laddered my bloody stockings again! Kate have you got a spare pair?”

Jim coughed and turned his attention to his Nav panel. “Girls!” He thought to himself.

“Sure, second drawer down on the left in my dresser, there’s a couple of new pairs in there, help yourself” said Kate.

“What are you sniggering at?” Kate asked, looking over at Jim with a grin.

“You two” he replied. “You’ve not had a man as a shipmate before, have you! Or are you always this, erm” he paused to choose the right word, “open?”

“Oh don’t mind us, Jim” she said. She shot him a friendly wink, “You’re one of us now” she chuckled.

“Doomed I tell you. I’m doomed!” He laughed back at her.

Just then Effie entered the Bridge.

“Holy shit!” He couldn’t restrain his shock at what he was looking at. “You going on a date or something?! He said to Effie. “Who the hell is on this ship called Cuckoo?”

The ships AI announced, “ All systems nominal, preparing to arrive in 5, 4, 3, 2, 1”...
20 Jan 2021, 12:10am
Jim turned to Effie, “I’ve hacked the beacon and there is an entry confirming that a ship called The Cuckoo entered the system a couple of days ago, but it looks like it jumped straight out again without stopping.”

“Thanks Jim” looking over at Kate, Effie asked, “Any word from the Chief?”

“Nothing yet Eff” replied Kate just as her comms panel beeped, “hold on, this is him now”

Effie sat forward in her chair, eager for news.

“Nope, not a sausage, apparently” Said Kate, “The Chief say the last time he saw JB and his metal friend was the day we covered his departure. Nothing since. He said he’ll contact us on Channel 9, if he hears anything”

“OK” said Effie in a rather deflated voice. “Any other news?”

“Apparently there’s a lot of very odd stuff going on at the Station right now and the Docks are full of all sorts of shenanigans. The Chief suggests we stay out a while longer and he’ll shout when things calm down” said Kate.

“Well that’s just dandy” said Jim. “I’m dying for a beer right now!”

“Let’s get out of here then” said Effie. Plot a course to Achenar and we’ll see about getting this bird fixed up on the QT, before heading back to Inara when it’s quietened down a bit.” Said Effie. “I’m going to get changed”

“On it” replied Kate.

“I’ll go check the FSD repairs are holding up” said Jim as he followed Effie out the door.

Lambast Mercy Echo watch Lamb stride away. She managed to stomp in the low gravity environment of the station yet still seem graceful. He dragged his hand down his face and looked at the bouncer who was recovering from his laughter.

“You’re a brave man tryin to get it on with that one” chuckled the doorman.

That deserved a comeback, but Echo couldn’t muster a witty response. Noticing the green blond and white hair of Maul Vega and Kaisla respectively withdraw from their vantage point like alligators sinking back into the water didn’t help either. Echo just took a deep breath and went to look for some intelligence to gather. He deeply hoped he could find some because right now he felt really stupid.

Kai was rambling incoherently about Echo and Lamb as she walked between Maul and Vega. With as much time as they'd spent together on the Hand, Vega and Maul were forced to learn how to let Kai's rambling fade into the background. The three were making their way to the meet with Cal and presumably Cat, when Vega noticed the odd look on Maul's face. His brow was slightly furrowed, as if he were lost in thought about something.

"You still with us, over there?" Vega said, over top of Kai, who didn't look too pleased about being interrupted.

Maul didn't respond. His eyes briefly glanced up to look at their surroundings but quickly back down to his mag boots clanking with each step.

Kai, not being happy about Vega's rudeness moments ago, raised a brow and directed her attention on Maul.

"Hey beard boy, she's talking to you!" Kai shouted, pinching and tugging at few hairs on Maul's chin.

"Ow! What the hell?!" Maul bellowed, bringing the group's stride to a complete halt.

Kai smirked and pointed a thumb at Vega. "She was talking to you."

Maul looked over to Vega with a mixed expression of concern and aggravation.

"You seemed out of it. I was just asking if you were alright." Vega shrugged.

"...Also, you interrupted me." Kai added, causing both Maul and Vega to shoot her a "look".

"No, I'm fine. I just...I have to do something." Maul said to Vega as he pulled his backpack around him to dig around in it.

"What?" Vega and Kai said in unison, causing them to give each other a brief glance. "You're bailing? It was your bright idea to go to the meet early." Said Vega.

Maul took a step closer to Vega, pulling out an earpiece.

"Here." He said reaching the earpiece to Vega. "Pair it with your comms device, we'll stay in touch this way. If shit goes south, contact the rest of us." He then turned to Kai. "And you make sure to get my data slate inside that building. I'll be on my computer, doing what I do." He zipped up his backpack and put it back on his shoulders. "The plan is still the same. Nothing's changed. Well, except I won't be...there."

Kai and Vega stood in silence as they listened to Maul tear apart an already unstable plan. A quick "Sorry. Trust me." and Maul was gone.

"Your boyfriend is flaky, you know that, right?" Said Kai.

"He's not my..." Vega sighed."...I'm tired of explaining this."

"Have you ACTUALLY explained it though?" Kai continued, attempting to rattle Vega's cage.

"Can we please just get on with it?" Vega said, continuing in the direction towards the meeting.

"That's exactly what I've been saying about you and Maul." Kai mumbled as she hurried to catch up with Vega.

************************************************

Maul entered the hangar that housed The Hand and approached the ships lift. He looked at the biometric scanner and wondered if his thumbprint was still saved to Holly's database from all those years ago. Just before his thumb touched the scanner, the lift unlocked and the doors slid open.

"Thanks Hol!" Maul said to the A.I. with a smile as he stepped on the lift.

The lift slowly made its way up and stopped abruptly. In between two floors of the ship.

"Ride stops here, Bumfluff. You need a key to proceed..." Holly paused for a moment. "...and judging by the look on your face, I'd assume you 'avent got a clue what I'm on about."

Maul rubbed the bridge of his nose. He'd temporarily forgotten just how worried Lamb was about ship security. At that time a small hatch flopped open to reveal a physical keyhole.

"I knew I should have picked up lockpicking." Maul thought to himself.

"Good news though, Bumfluff. I happen to know that you are actually in possession of such a key."

Maul began patting around on his pants pockets. "I am?..Where the fuck...Actually how the fu..."

"Bad news, Bumfluff. Telling you the location of this key would be a security risk."

The monotone voice coupled with the sarcasm of the A.I. was enough to make Maul's blood pressure rise.

"So it's games you want to play, Hol? You're still mad about me not getting in contact with you immediately after my recovery?! Is that it?!"

"I assure you, Bumfluff, I take security very seriously. I'm offended that you'd think such things of me."

Maul rolled his eyes as he started to moved to his jacket pockets. There it was! A lump in the inside pocket! He unzipped the jacket and quickly scratched around inside to get the key.

"Ah ha!" Maul shouted, holding the key up to the camera inside the elevator, boasting to Holly.

He slid the key into the slot and turned it. The life cam back to life for a brief second only to stop again.

"What the FUCK!" Maul roared.

"There's also key word." Hol delivered the statement as monotone as ever.

"No, there fuckin isn't." Maul said with narrowed eyes as he called the bluff with very little confidence.

"Security measures enabled. Target acquired. Beginning silent countdown." Came the voice of Holly accompanied by flashing red lights and a series of metal tubes suddenly protruding out of the walls.

This was no joke. Maul had now started franticly tapping buttons and trying to pry the doors open with his hands.

"Ah, Hol, I don't know!." Maul cried out as he began breathing heavily.

After a few seconds of grunting and yelling profanity at the A.I., Maul began shouting random words.

"Apple!..Orange!..Blue!..Avocado!..I don't fucking know!"

"3.." Holly said in his usual monotone, now somehow menacing voice.

"No 3! Go back!" Maul shouted as he released the maglock on his boots, pushing himself upwards to float to the maintenance hatch at the top of the lift.

"..2.."

"Of course it's locked!" Maul cried out.

".....1.."

Maul clenched his entire body and closed his eyes as tight as he could, fully expecting to be vaporized....but nothing...he felt nothing. He slowly opened his eyes and looked around. The tubes had retracted into the wall and the flashing red lights had gone too. He pushed himself back down and enabled the maglock on his boots again.

"April Fool." Holly said, followed by the lift doors opening.

Maul was shaking inside and out. He cleared his throat and straightened his jacket, making sure the key was well secured inside his pocket.

"...Not funny." Maul said in a serious tone as he stepped out of the lift, heading in the direction of the cockpit.

In the cockpit, Maul attached his computer into the console near the pilots seat, which would allow him to control it from the projected holo screens and the ships built in keyboard, stashed his backpack into a nearby cubby, where he could strap it down and proceeded to  make himself comfortable in the pilot seat. After a few moments of loud clicking from the keyboard, in the otherwise silent cockpit, Maul could hear the audio from his data slate that, judging by the sound of it, was still in Kai's pocket. One of the holo screens projected a series of signals that his slate was picking up on but from what he could tell from the audio, Kai and Vega where not near the meeting, thus none of these signals were his target.

With nothing to do at the moment, he began cycling through the ships cameras. He eventually happened upon Lamb, who was elbow deep in various ingredients in the galley. He was pleasantly surprised to see she was already on board, as his intentions where to beat her here. He needed an ear to bend and Lamb's was the one he'd been searching for.

He hopped from the pilots chair, grabbing an earbud from a recess in his computer and jamming it is his right ear, as to listen for Kai's arrival at the meet, and headed towards the galley.
20 Jan 2021, 1:50pm
Cooking in zero-G was messy and very difficult, but it did have some benefits. Every surface could be a work surface and with the amount of cooking Lamb had to squeeze into the remaining hour forty-five minutes, she’d need all the space she could get.

Holly had told her Maul was boarding, and the computer had successfully stalled him for a while so Lamb could get everything in the galley set up the way she wanted it before Mr. Montresor came to bother her. She carried on prepping, keeping an eye on the little window in the galley door for her friend.

When his face appeared at the glass Lamb raised a finger.

“You’re not coming in here in outside clothes Mr Montresor. Please put on a clean pressure suit, cowl and all” She said through the intercom “I don’t want green hair in my cake mix thank you” she continued to herself.

When he appeared again looking like a reluctant diver, Holly unlocked the door.

“Sit there and don’t touch anything” said Lamb indicating the stool by the entrance “I have a lot to do in very little time”

She spared the man a glace; something about the way his face was hanging caused her to soften a little. Something more than the balaclava like cowl pushing his face out made him look a little puppyish.

In a softer tone, she asked “What can I do for you Mr. Montresor?”
20 Jan 2021, 2:08pm
Maul took a moment to eye over everything Lamb was doing. He tried to think of how to word his response.

"...I'm worried...well I think that..." Maul stopped. He still had no idea how to start this conversation.

"I'm worried that things are about to get a whole lot more dangerous very soon..."

Maul stopped again, shaking his head with shrug.

"Alright, you remember what we did on Hauser's Reach all those years ago?"

He continued without giving pause for a response.

"That guy Fluke?...What I...what we did...that shit really fucked me up...all of that did, you know?..."

He started to get up but remembered that Lamb told him not to move or touch anything, so compromised by leaning forward with his elbows on his knees, looking, mostly, down at the floor.

"I mean, I've tried to avoid making any contact with you since then, because I wanted to forget all of that shit and move on...but I can't lie to myself anymore...and now here we are working together again and things are starting to get seriously fucking dangerous and...I'm starting to question myself and my morals again, just like I did when I left Robigo."

He shook his head again.

"I guess what I'm asking is, how the fuck am I supposed to be okay with everything I've done? Because I'm tired of trying to pretend that I'm okay when I'm not. People have died because of the things I've done...more than you even know, Lamb, and it's starting to get to me." Said Maul as he finished with a very stern, yet anxious, look at Lamb.
20 Jan 2021, 2:15pm
“Back straight and chip up man. If you’re going to talk to me then have the decency to point your mouth in my direction. Although given the caliber of your language, I’m glad you mumbled at the floor” replied Lamb in her best schoolmistress tone.

She stopped herself from saying the first thing that came to mind on the matter in hand and compiled everything Maul had just unloaded. What a day she was having. First she finds out her best friend was a pirate, then a little stress relief made one man want to talk about relationships, and now another chap sounded on the verge of a nervous breakdown. She felt guilty enough for being angry at Kai on her birthday of all days that Lambast had completely forgotten about for the first time ever, so she wasn’t about to scare off another friend by being terse.

The butter went in the bowl and Lamb quickly put the mixing lid on before all the ingredients floated away.  She turned her attention to Maul once more and tried to use a kind tone that sounded natural. It wasn’t easy for her.

“Your rambling dear boy; order your thoughts and take another run at it. Tell me what’s really at the heart of the matter ay? If you manage to answer without swearing at me, I’ll let you lick the bowl” Said Lamb pushing the massive mixing bowl forward as exhibit A

Maul chuckled a bit at the ridiculousness of her response and sat back up to look at Lamb. He was never a fan of the necessary profanity filter he had to have when discussing things with her, but he felt that she was the only one who could seriously help him sort out his thoughts right now.

"Okay." He said taking a moment to collect his thoughts into something other than a ramble.

"I'm having regrets about everything that I've done up to this point in my life." Said Maul with a nod. At least that sounded an actual sentence.

"I've hurt people, even some innocent people, and done things to further my own goals. I guess I'm just having a hard time figuring out how I'm supposed to be feeling right now, because I don't exactly like myself anymore."

"How can one feel okay with themselves, knowing that they've ruined or even taken multiple lives?"
20 Jan 2021, 2:45pm
Lamb waited for Maul to get to the point of all his worries, but that seemed to be it. She felt like the person that hadn’t got the punchline to a joke. She hoped Maul didn’t notice she was waiting for more. Planting a seed with her next comment may reap benefits later in their consultation, and Lamb felt she needed to be gentle for the time being.

“Regretting everything you say. Being a bit harsh on ya self there what? I must point out that I’m rather hurt that you would prefer to have kept me in the past. Could have saved time effort and creds on all those Birthday and Christmas gifts had I but known” said Lamb checking the cake mix was ready.

She started decanting the mixture into smaller bowls to flavour each cake to match the tastes of Kaisla and her friends.

“Tell me, how many people did you top?” asked Lamb matter of factly “Can’t be that many because we haven’t been off the ship for much more than three hours and I haven’t heard any great commotion”

Maul's eyes narrowed on Lamb. He shook his head.

'Tell me, how many people did you top?' "It's as if these kind of things didn't phase her in the slightest." Maul thought to himself.

"No Lamb, before all of this. Before Cleve Hub even. After I left Robigo, I found myself spiraling out of control. I kept taking on work that was growing increasingly more dangerous. I used to hunt pirates for the corporation that Tessa was heading. Pirate hunting, Lamb!. Does that sound like something that the kid you knew on Hauser's Reach, would do?!"

Maul rubbed his hand over his face and scoffed.

"Anyway, after the corporation set me up and made me their fall guy, I ran away. Found myself in Diaguandri trying to avoid everyone and everything." He paused and sighed. "But that didn't stick. After a while I found myself in situations where I had to..."

He shook his head again. He'd been trying to keep his actions separate from his emotions for so long, that he found himself struggling to confront himself.

"People keep telling me that I'm a good person....but would a good person gun down an unarmed passenger ship full of innocent people?...Just so he'd receive information that'd further his own wants?"

Maul took a deep breath, he felt relieved, yet defeated. He'd never told anyone of this and it felt unreal for him to admit to it.

“Oh so it wasn’t just now” Said Lamb gesticulating with her hands as talked letting the big mixing bowl float off “That’s good, I’d hate for Kai’s party to be spoiled just for bumping off a few pirates”

The bowl was plucked out of the air and Lamb finished decanting the cake mix into the smaller bowls.

“My dear boy, you’re having a crisis of conscience. What are you, late twenties? Bit early for a crisis but there are no hard fast rules for such things”

She paused for a moment while she got the rack of flavourings out of a storage unit.

“Your certainly not a good person by the by. Good people don’t tend to go poking around in other people’s computers or getting involved with criminal types. Any fraternity that doesn’t frown on green hair and inked faces must be breaking minor laws on a daylily basis as the very least.

Now the mix was divided up, Lamb gently span the big mixing bowl to Maul. It drifted towards him slowly.

“You’re a carpet bagger, shyster; a confidence trickster, and a bounder. You con people, stalk them and use what you have learned to invade their privacy. In short, a prowling arse. You are however also a nice chap and that, I think, is the core of your issue”

Pushing herself down a little to look at Mauls’ face beyond the drifting earthwear, Lambast continued.

“Now, please don’t take this as a rejection. I have all the time in the world for you, but shouldn't you be having this chat with Mrs Sonders? I do have an opinion and I’ll gladly voice it, but I don’t think you’ll like hearing it. I'm not very empathetic don'ch know?”

Maul grabbed the mixing bowl and pulled it down into his lap. He stared at it for a moment while he digested what Lamb had just said.

"No." Maul said looking back up at Lamb. "Vega stays out of this."

He rubbed his finger around the inside of the bowl and tasted the mix.

"I know what everyone thinks about me and her. But see, I've already tried caring about someone in that way before."

After a second tasting of the mix, he continued.

"Shortly after arriving in Diaguandri I met a girl who lived down the hall from me and for some reason she seemed to enjoy my company."

Maul smiled as he thought back on memories of better times. Though, it wasn't long before his smile quickly began to fade.

"My dangerous antics wound up biting me in the ass...butt... and she was taken captive, the fuckers who....sorry, the 'guys' who took her forced me to gain access to the network of a local hotspot that wealthy folk tended to visit, so he could gather sensitive info on them. The guy's name was 'Mr. Usher'. The very same name that this Yog-Sothoth mouthpiece used as an alias."

"Long story short, Mr. Usher's head is a stain on a floor in the warehouse district and the girl, Cate, she left to live with family while she recovered from the mess I got her in."

He chuckled slightly and rubbed his hand down his face.

"Last thing she told me was, 'Take care of yourself' and then she hugged me. How fucked is that?"

"I've felt so guilty about what happened to her for so long. I've been keeping tabs on her since then...even been dripping credits into her accounts.

A smile crept across Maul's face again.

"She's actually married now. Even has a kid. He just turned 2."

He cleared his throat and tried to bring himself back into the moment. His expression changing back to a neutral one.

"So, no. Vega and me, we're friends, and that's already too much. Yes, she's important to me, but I tend to fuck up a lot and end up destroying things that are important."

"...I mean 'mess up'...sorry."
