Elite roleplay: Off station

OFF STATION

Your ship, deep space, anything that is not happening inside the Citi Gateway or Ingaba...

General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

"I think it's a great picture," I said, looking at the photo. "We might look a bit strange next to each other, but you can definitely recognise a team."

I smiled and remembered our meeting on Inara. Who would have thought we'd end up here, waltzing through the universe and stepping on some bad guys' toes in the process. Apparently it was a good thing we didn't try to blow each other up back then.

"Alright, since the ships are here, we could go straight to Arque. I can have the carrier follow behind us. Or do you fancy hopping on the carrier first and then jumping to Arque? Either way, I'm all for it."

"Er ..." I tried to scratch my head, forgetting I had my helmet on, so it just looked like a weird gesture of putting my hand to my head. "One, moment."

Had to double check the distance from here to Arque. Which, with currently having the prototype SCO drive fitted, was not particularly convenient, because it was over 200 light years.

"I, think, take, the carrier. I would do, over ten jumps, unless switching drive. So, it may, be faster, to use it. But... it, does not, carry aircraft?"
21 Jul 2024, 6:24pm
“Alright. I’m still using the pre-engineered one, and I’m quite satisfied with that tech - especially its jump range. If they ever built an A variant of the SCO FSD, I’d switch in a heartbeat... But where I usually hang out, the distances between worlds are a bit bigger, so it doesn’t make sense for me at the moment.”

I threw one last glance at the cargo bay. All in all, our little jaunt to this place had been pretty successful, and I hoped our next venture would be just as fruitful.

“Let’s head to the carrier then. And no, it doesn’t actually carry aircraft - though sometimes an Eagle surely feels like one.”
21 Jul 2024, 8:59pm
I shrugged to that.

"I, guess. Anyway, time, to get out."

With that said and this venture done, I walked over to my ship, plugging in a course back to the carrier, once in the cockpit. Just a single jump, so it'd be quick. And, since there was nothing much to do while waiting for the carrier to jump, I'd just stay in my ship, once docked.

That did leave me with some time to think - and the one thing that remained on my mind was the mysterious entity that'd guided us to that abandoned facility. Obviously, it would have known about it from Azimuth's databanks, but why had that cache been left untouched for so long? Forgotten because Salvation chose to focus on the Proteus Wave program instead? Or maybe forgotten in its aftermath? And how did that thing, which seemed much like one of Azimuth's experiments, even get to learn about it in the first place?

Maybe the answers for all that would be found in the distant nebula. First, though, we had an unwarranted assassination of an engineer and his whole team to prevent. Which would probably be interesting in its own right, by involving some snooping around areas visitors were generally not allowed in. And it'd be hard to convince security that a whole bunch of volatile material that'd drive everyone crazy was sitting around just waiting to be released, in a few months, while sneaking me in was... almost a matter of impossibility, even if I used the holographic disguise, because it did just hide those physical proportions, not change them. That was the one time being a shapeshifter would be practical, but I wasn't - nor did I want to be - so we'd just have to work around my big curves.

And all that was just considerations for when we did get to Arque, but it was still good to ponder them ahead of time. I had a feeling my companion had some similar thoughts, both in regards to the "thing", and our immediately upcoming task.
22 Jul 2024, 11:37am
With the mission complete, I swaggered over to my Clipper, my mind abuzz with thoughts. Settling into the cockpit, I punched in the course for the carrier. One jump, quick and easy. As the engines roared to life, I couldn’t help but mull over the bizarre events that had just unfolded.

That creepy ‘thing’ that led us to the abandoned facility was still a riddle wrapped in an enigma. How did it know about this abandoned place? Did it acquire this information from hacking into Azimuth’s systems at Lab 23, or was there something even more twisted going on? I had a hunch we needed to dig deeper into its background to shed some light on this.

And then there was that cache itself, left untouched for who knows how long. From the logs we found, it seemed the terrorist had visited the place at least twice. First, after the notorious NMLA leader Theta Seven bit the dust, and again after the Battle of Summerland, leaving some kind of shrine with her sister’s photo. Maybe the losses were too heavy back then, and with Darkwater Inc. disbanded and the Empire crushing the NMLA, there was no one left to use it.

The threat of a terrorist attack on the engineers' base in Arque was a ticking time bomb that demanded our immediate attention. We had to act discreetly to prevent it - the base was tightly guarded and it seemed almost impossible to convince security of the imminent danger from the volatile material. I had no idea how we could thwart it, but perhaps we could pose as clients interested in the engineer's services. And even if it seemed far-fetched, perhaps my companion could open up a path for us with her enthusiasm for the Thargoids. Professor Palin at least seemed like a kindred spirit when it came to a peaceful solution.

These thoughts still swirled in my mind as I docked and initiated the carrier jump to Arque. As the stars streaked past, I couldn’t shake the feeling that we were diving headfirst into something much bigger than we’d bargained for, even if Arque was likely just a sideshow. But the answers we sought were somewhere out there, perhaps waiting for us in the distant Thor’s Helmet Nebula.

I decided to contact my companion, whose name I still just found weird, after the carrier completed its jump... just to determine our course of action.

"So, how, do you... want, to handle, this?"

Because I didn't really have much of a clue about it. Let alone where we would find that Helix, or what it was disguised as.
22 Jul 2024, 2:03pm
“We don’t really know much,” I had to admit. “We’ve got the terrorist’s name - Cassia Verda, though I doubt that’ll pop up anywhere since she’s almost certainly using an alias. We know she was flying a Cobra MkIV… we can narrow down the timeframe from her last logs. And we know we’re looking for about 50 tons of Helix.”

I paused, tapping my fingers on the console in my cockpit, thinking.

“Looks like the only way to crack this is by accessing a computer system in Arque. Luckily, the Cobra MkIV is a pretty rare ship, that might help… maybe we can figure out where she landed back then. 50 tons isn’t a lot, but it’s not so little that you can just waltz it across the base under the security’s noses.... also it is near the maximum such a ship can carry, so probably an even rarer ship configuration. Maybe that’ll narrow the search a bit. Plus, it doesn’t help her cause if the stuff blows up in the open on a landing pad or such - somehow, it has to get into the base, or at least its air supply,” I speculated, my mind racing.

“I was hoping we could just enter the base as regular customers of the engineer’s services, and maybe somehow get access to a computer through him. I know it’s all pretty improvised, but right now, I don’t have a better idea,” I confessed.

Then I had another inspiration. "Do we have anything that could interest him? His hobbyhorse is probably Thargoid research."
22 Jul 2024, 2:19pm
"Hm. I, guess... we could, land, there. If, you, have access. As well. Don't... know. Uh ..."

I remained quiet for a few seconds, trying to think, too. But nothing was really coming to my brain.

"Maybe, we should... just, go, there. They, should... not, have, any reason, to not let, us."
22 Jul 2024, 9:02pm
"I've been there a few times in the past, but it's been a while. The base is called Abel Laboratory and is located on planet Arque 4 e. It shouldn't be a problem for us to land there."

I checked the systems of my Clipper, ensuring everything was in order for the journey. The engines roared to life, and the control panels lit up with a soft glow. Meanwhile, my companion was getting ready in her own ship.

"It's only a short flight, the carrier is very close to the planet. Ready when you are."
22 Jul 2024, 9:11pm
"Have, not been here, in, a while, either. But... kind of, remember, anyway. We may, land at opposite ends, though. Because... well, your, ship, is big."

I'd hit the launch prompt while saying that, not seeing a huge need for checks when I'd only docked some twenty minutes ago, and only sent systems into standby mode.

"Will, meet you there?"

It was kind of a question, but also not really. I zipped away from the carrier and into supercruise, to the planet. I wouldn't be long for the base... and my first statement kind of hid a tease, because apparently I was working with someone who really hated walking. And Palin operated from one of those big, circular planetary ports. I'd just have to see where we both were at once landed.
22 Jul 2024, 9:30pm
'If it can’t be avoided," I quipped back, a smirk playing on my lips.

I fired up my engines and soon left the carrier in my wake. My ship might’ve been on the larger side, but it was still one of the faster models, and extra tuned for speed on top of that - flying fast was my lifeblood. Who’d want to walk when they could soar?

I raced towards the planet, reaching it in supercruise within minutes, ready to switch to landing approach. Moments later, I spotted the base and eased off the throttle. I cast a quick glance at the facility just as the comms crackled to life.

“Gutamaya Hotel Alpha Romeo, please request a landing pad assignment before commencing your approach to the landing zone.”

The place was pretty massive and much bigger than I remembered. I fervently hoped our ships wouldn’t be parked too far apart. At least my landing bay was right next to a larger building complex with a huge tower right next to it, which looked important enough to make me hope that we might meet there.
22 Jul 2024, 9:40pm
I never really cared to remember where what was located in regards to pads on these bases, particularly not this type, because most planetary ports were smaller ones with a few pads placed in no obvious pattern, primarily navigating by instruments and sight second, until I was relatively sure where my landing area was.

Some luck was had in me not being assigned right to the opposite end of the base, but somewhere close to the edge of that same 'quarter' of the ring which had the pads on it. I immediately went down to the hangar, standing up to get myself sorted. For one, no armor while going into that base, and they probably wouldn't allow weapons to be carried openly, or so I assumed, anyway. But it was quite unlikely we would be doing any shooting, so I left that stuff in the ship, and exited through the front airlock.

Now to find that other woman. Though she'd probably see me first, given that I didn't exactly blend into crowds... and was getting stared at by quite a few people, at that.
23 Jul 2024, 8:41am
I powered down the Clipper’s systems, the sound of the engines fading into silence. The landing had been smooth, and I was grateful for the proximity of my pad to the base’s main entrance. Navigating these bases was always a bit of a gamble, but today, luck was on my side.

Next I donned my pilot suit, leaving the Maverick suit and my weapons behind. The base’s regulations were strict, and I didn’t want to draw unnecessary attention. Besides, this was supposed to be a straightforward meeting, so there was no need for heavy gear.

Stepping out of the airlock, I was immediately hit by the bustling activity of the base. People moved in every direction, and the air was filled with the sounds of distant discussions and machinery doing work on ships, a reminder of the base’s purpose. As I moved through the throng of people, I kept my eyes peeled for any sign of her. She was out here somewhere, and her extravagant body shape would made her hard to miss, even in a crowd.

It was just a matter of time before we connected and got on with our mission.
23 Jul 2024, 10:03am
I'd decided to just go to the central lounge rather than play the game of wandering hallways and open rooms trying to find each other, informing my companion of that plan when I got there.

Waiting in the lounge. Find me there, simpler that way... not like you can miss me. Or it's a lot harder to, anyway.

Finding somewhere to sit down wasn't quite as simple, mostly thanks to the spatial requirements my big form posed. Luckily, there was an empty bench, normally made for three people, available, so I went ahead and occupied that. Merely sitting on it would make it pretty clear I wouldn't really want anybody else on there... because that'd be a bit too awkward. Given that I still wore the same black suit, just without the extra armor and weapons, that left me even easier to identify, though not in the 'making trouble' kind of way.
23 Jul 2024, 11:15am
I received the message and couldn’t help but smirk. Typical of her to find the most straightforward solution. The central lounge it was, then. I made my way through the bustling corridors, weaving through the crowd.

As I approached the lounge, I spotted her immediately. It was hard not to, given her imposing figure taking up most of a bench. The black suit, even without the armor and weapons, made her stand out too as many people here seemed to prefer more colourful clothing. I quickened my pace, eager to close the distance.

“Hey there,” I called out as I got closer, a grin spreading across my face. “You weren’t kidding about being hard to miss.”
