Elite roleplay: Off station

OFF STATION

Your ship, deep space, anything that is not happening inside the Citi Gateway or Ingaba...

General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

It was the click from the big gun that did it, in this dark cavernous room, the soft noise sounded like the gavel of a judge about to pass sentence. Until that noise, it was going to be a quiet but tense battle of wills. While Vodan got his answer ready, Dyson typed a command then tucked the covas out of the line of fire.

=========================================

Noises from the Vengerfields’ interrogation room made Jacqueline think perhaps the man had come down early for some reason. She decided to get ready to be on duty before he had to call for her. Waiting was not something Vengerfield would do.

After getting ready, Jacqueline left the nightlight on and opened her door to peek out. She couldn’t see much, but there were two people silhouetted against the green glow of the airlock's indicator light.

==========================================

With a deliberate monotone and contained anger, Vodan explained the situation to his visitors.

“If you fire that cannon in here, it’s gonna go through me, and then through the wall. Pressure suit or not, everyone in this area is gonna have a fuckin problem as they race to be the first out of the new tiny exit. Get it ya dumb bitch?”

Vodan rounded on JB with backup. Above them on a catwalk shrouded in darkness, lights shone down on JB and Meowers; two in front of them and two on each side. Doubtless lights attached to the barrel of guns.

“This is my operation dickless, if I can contain the lordling, then dealing with you two won’t be a problem. I’ll show you whats in the cell, then you will get the fuck off my rock and If I even suspect one of your waists-of-air that pass as raiders is even pointing in our direction, I’ll blow it out the sky”

Stepping up to JB Vodan finished his rebuttal.

“Drop your fucking weapons or I’ll be waking the master with a pair of corpses”

"Okay. The truth how I see it. Let them know it."

Ina switched her comms back to open channel and finally entered this 'conversation'.

"Yes", she said calmly, facing Vodan, "When I pull that trigger, a burst of plasma rounds will go through you, perhaps through your tech companion and your master's lovely little throne. Then I'll have some seconds trying to shoot your friends, before they probably kill me. So. You will be dead. Me? Maybe. You won't know it anyway. You really want to end up like this, as a first victim of the most useless firefight, protecting his master's little secrets? To be remembered as a person who was afraid of his master's punishment more than getting shot?". Her voice sounded quite surreal after Vodan's speech and given the situation. Then she added, "I doubt they pay you that much for your loyalty".

"Cartwright..." JB addressed Muir gently, gesturing to her to calm down, "...chill the fuck out."

JB looked around at the lights coming down from the catwalks. Things had escalated quickly.

There is a softly-softly approach to any sort of negotiation. If you were to haggle over a counterfeit watch from a market you might tell the seller you like it but it's too expensive... you leave a door open for him to bring the price down. You might look at the cheaper watches but he wants to sell you the expensive one. It's a dance. The moment you start to walk away you either push him to fold and bring the price down... or you've haggled too far, he lets you leave and you miss out completely. It's a bold move that doesn't always pay off. You should always leave the other person with the opportunity to keep the deal going.

In this situation, by arming her weapon, Muir walked out on the deal... but in this situation they aren't missing out on some moody watch... they're about to get ventilated on a shitty little moon because of some "Lordling".

The guide had been left with nowhere to go, and the eyes of his gang bearing down on them. Even if they could get through to the client unarmed, there was no way they could get out of this place without weapons. it was time for JB to try and unring the bell.

"None of us want to die over this crap," JB restarted, this time calmly addressing his guide, "We all just want to get out of here and get paid. I know I have no intention of dying for my bosses."

JB looked back at Ina, gave her a gentle nod then spoke to her; "Cartwright, give him the rifle so we can check that room and get the fuck outta here."

JB didn't know Muir that well but he hoped that, even if she didn't trust him, she'd at least trust that he had a plan. He'd also hung a lot on the guide taking this opportunity to save face and relieve the inspector of her rifle.

There was a locker not too far from the DIY doorway that had been cut and fitted to the wall of the building. Vodan went over and opened it by pressing his wrist slate against its reader.

"No one goes down there without an unaltered weapon and stun ammo. That crap-bag will have a gun out of your hands quicker than you can pull the trigger. And after the trouble we took to catch and keep him for longer than half an hour, we're not in the mood to have him shot by some pissy visitor"

Vodan stood by the empty locker waiting and sizing up the long rifle. It would fit if she put it in at an angle.
13 May 2021, 9:35pm
"Hmmm... If I leap away from the flashlights, firing at this guy, landing near the wall at the right side... Then shoot that pair in front of me, moving out of sight of pair at the right, because I'll be below them... Still have to deal with those at the left... Keeping out of the flashlights, so they can't see me, but I'll be seeing them at holo-projector... That JB... I doubt he even can shoot that pistol... Dammit, too many moves, no good position, those freaks are everywhere, and... this room will be chock full of them as soon as they hear shots fired. Crap. Told myself already, no deals with these slicky types like that JB, and look what crap I'm in now. Just had to forget these words once, and now I'm here."

Giving away her possessions to someone else who wasn't trusted, even for a short time, was one of her least favourite things to do. Especially if it's a weapon and she's in a middle of some place, full of armed people who aren't to be trusted in any way, and their ways of life were going right against principles of her own. But they still haven't exactly located this hostage, and this might be the chance.

"Okay. That sounds like an explanation", she answered, placing the safety switch back, detaching the magazine and squeezing it into a pocket. Without an ammo her rifle was just a big metal stick, and unlikely they had proper ammo for it. "And you", she pointed her finger at JB, passing him as she walked towards the locker, "if I can't get it back, you'll have to find exactly the same model. I don't care how you'll do it". At least she still had a pistol, that wasn't visible under a long jacket.
13 May 2021, 9:51pm
JB nodded as Ina walked past him. He was glad that they both had their visors tinted, he guessed there was a scowl attached to that warning... and he was glad that the guide couldn't see the relief on his own face that they'd avoided having the soldiers rain bullets down on them.

JB turned to the guide as Ina put her rifle in the locker.

"So?" JB began, calmness remaining in his voice and the familiar tone of a fellow underling returning, "Everything copacetic?"

“No. You pricks don’t fall into that category, but that will definitely change when you fly away”
Shutting the locker with a little more force than he intended, Vodan dismissed the guards and opened the door. The men above quietly turned off their lights and let the shadows cover them again. Dyson let the breath he didn’t realise he was holding escape and opened his computer to see how his investigation was going while the visitors followed his boss towards the cell.

There should have been someone in the awkwardly placed guard post, or more accurately guard box at the corner of the long corridor. Vodan stopped to look in the visor like narrow window that bisected the off structure at head high. Whoever should have been on ‘coffin duty’ was obviously using the alert raised by the rubbish-skip landing to abandon his post and take time to come back. Vodan would sort that after letting the visitors glace at Creamy. At least this gave him the chance to taunt the ass hole that had kicked him in the head twice.

Beside the cell door sat an intercom and screen showing the room beyond. The image was currently in a grey-blue low light setting. Vodan keyed the intercom.

“You. Up. Now. Ya got 10 seconds”

The small screen showed a hazy image of someone struggling to get out of a narrow bed. Once free of the bedclothes and standing, the person crouched down like a cat. Vodan, who had been opening menus on his wrist mounted slate selected an option and then opened the door.

As the door opened, the cells light came on causing Creamy to squint, easing the discomfort it caused. The catheter in his arm was still connected to the drip and at this angel, it hurt. The bearded man Creamy felt he had met before came in and behind him were to more people whose’ clothes didn’t match the style he’d seen on anyone else. One of today’s visitors was a woman in tight leather.

The automatic ‘perk’ the woman cause in Creamys’ attitude straightened his back, letting Creamy know his wrists were not attached to his ankles this time. Slowly, he stood up and doing a very good job of arranging his messy unbrushed hair with just one flick of his head that would make any number of models in shampoo adverts wish to know Creamys’ secret, he went to work.

Once upright, presenting his best side to his new visitor, Creamy intended to take a step towards her. That’s when he was reminded his feet were still bound. The only reason Creamy didn’t fall over was the low gravity giving him time to recover, although he was aware that he must have looked silly flailing his bound arms around trying not to fall.

“Good.. ..morning I assume madam? Lord Goodness at your service” He said with a warm slime, bow, and not even a hint of embarrassment.

He just hoped the bruises all over his body and slit lip made him look dangerously hansom, instead of like a guy what had taken a sound beating.

JB was as relieved as he was surprised. He was relieved that they'd found Creamy Goodness III... but surprised that the client was a grown man and not a child. This meant that this Creamy guy must have something else going on if he had a kidnapping tracker implanted on himself... but more intriguingly that, after a week or so, his abductors still hadn't sent out a ransom.

This brought JB's mind around to the kidnappers.

A lot of the politics surrounding JB's organisation was about making compromises, making little wins and taking little losses. You smile, you shake hands, you bite your tongue when you need to. JB had been biting his tongue since he'd bumped into this bearded fuck on the landing pad outside.

JB remembered every word, every name called, every insult thrown his way whilst The Guide hid behind his small army. JB might like to use words to get his way nowadays but he was still the product of a very violent upbringing. He still had to fight his way through life and you don't get to lead a small outlaw army if you can't "put the cat out". And, the truth is, JB's not a very nice guy.

Now that this shithead guide was no longer of any use to them, JB let all the frustration of the past hour out of his body... through his fist... straight into the guy's jaw.

JB was impressed that The Guide didn't drop straight onto his arse, instead only dropping to one knee. A second quick right to the temple sent him onto all fours. JB spent half his time back at the gang's HQ in the boxing gym with his fellow gang members... they would've all been impressed to see The Guide take a second blow and not be out cold. JB pulled back and sent a third punch into the back of a The Guide's head... sending him bouncing face-down into the floor, finally out.

JB made a mental note to try and put some cuffs on this bastard.

JB took the dataslate from The Guide's arm and threw it to Ina.

"Muir..." JB began, "I'm really sorry about the rifle... it's just that I hired you and I'm going to do whatever I can to make sure you get back to your ship alive and with a pocketful of credits... and you," he continued, turning his attention to Creamy, "I hope you can fight as we're getting you out of here and it's probably gonna get a bit hairy."

"Ahha... There he is... So, this guide guy, so we can... What!? Whoa, that was some nice punch."

"I just don't know your ways and don't trust people in general", Ina replied, catching the dataslate that JB thrown to her after that short showoff of pummeling skills, "Probably you know this already. And starting a firefight there wasn't a best idea, I admit."

Then she untinted the helmet glass, letting the hostage see her properly, as some social algorithms within her were saying that it's one of the ways to show your good intentions. Ina turned her face to Creamy and said, "So, you're Creamy? Okay. I guess you want to get out of here. And judging by your... state, it may be truth. That... bands on your arms and legs... Had you seen how they put them on you? Any clues about how to unlock them? And can you hold on without meds for an... hour, maybe?"

And then she added, looking at JB, "We have to find a suit for this guy. It's no fun in running across the vacuum almost naked. I guess our guide's suit will do fine, have to remove the bands first, however. Then we can... Swap their roles. Our guy would be in a suit, their guy would be naked, cuffed and laying on the floor. And... I can tell you what I had noticed about this place. If you want to, of course. It might be the only chance before we start getting out".

It wasn’t Sovereign Shield and this wouldn’t have been the first time he was kidnapped from kidnappers. Still, he’d seen enough of this cell so maybe a new one would be a nice change of scenery. When the woman opened her face mask, Creamy had a new priority. Answer the pretty, and matter of fact ladies questions.

“That is true, no, no, and yes no problem at all. I’m very hardy”

Creamy was about to enquire about the tall woman’s accent when he remembered his nurse.

“I say, if you happen to be a rescue party, do you think you could find time to look for a nice young lady I believe is being held as a prisoner? Save that suit for her, I’ll just need to boots if they will fit. Without them I’ll float off the moment I start trying to run.. .. Well that will still be better than pogoing off if I’m still bound what?” he asserted in a friendly flirty way looking into Muirs’ eyes.

JB moved to check the corridor was still empty causing Creamy to notice him for a moment.

“Oh hello old boy. Good show with the old fisty cuffs there. Top draw”
14 May 2021, 4:15pm
"What? Vacuum naked jumping? That's beyond crazy. Especially when he's beaten and on meds."

"Hey," replied Ina almost instantly, and her voice and expressions remained neutral as usual despite Creamy's attempts to sound nice and flirty, "Look at yourself. They roughed you up pretty nice. And you're on meds. We can take them with us too, to resume the medication once we're onboard. Jumping through the vacuum is crazy as it is, and in your condition it's a no go. And that second prisoner... There's plenty of suits on people walking outside this cell. I'll ask them nice".

Then Ina walked closer to Creamy, grabbed his hand that wasn't connected to the drip, and took a closer look on the band he was wearing.

"Yeah. They're remotely controlled, no interface here and nowhere to put the key. I guess guard's slate can give me more clues. Maybe there's some... software... switch...", she started to run through known options, as she leaned on the wall and turned the dataslate on to see what was inside it. "JB... You could relieve our friend of his suit to make things go faster".
14 May 2021, 4:36pm
Meowers"JB... You could relieve our friend of his suit to make things go faster".

"Well that's not happening!" exclaimed JB as he looked back into the room from the doorway. He reached into his duster and pulled out his pistol. "I'm guarding the door. You do it... or you do it," he added, gesturing towards Creamy. "I didn't like his hairy face, I have no intention to get up close and personal with his hairy arse aswell."
14 May 2021, 4:59pm
"Point taken," replied Ina, continuing with her dataslate examinations, "You're okay telling people to do what they don't want to do. Still refusing to do the same thing. And there's no less risk of losing the hostage or being shot".
14 May 2021, 5:35pm
“Oh no I fully intend to get a pressure suit to wear. I’m tough, not invulnerable.. obviously” half gowned Creamy removing the catheter with his teeth revealing some of his more sizable injuries previously hidden by his exercise sculpted arms “I would simply like to see the woman safe first is all; but as needs must, one shall oblige”

Keeping hold of the womans’ hand, Muir the chap had called her, keeping hold of Muirs’ hand to stop himself floating off as he bounced, Creamy pogoed to Vodans’ recumbent form.

“Right then, you boffin ya way down that pad Ms Muir, and see if you can free me while that capable chap keeps us covered..” Said creamy in a bright ‘braking the tension’ tone “..and I’ll see what I can do about our friend here”

Thankfully, with the gravity being so low in this .. place .. Vodan was easy to move about even with Creramys’ wrists bound together and he soon started reliving him of his pressure suit. There were many things going through Creamys’ mind, and he was surprised to find that his more mundane worries floated to the top of the pile.

Questions like ‘what day is it’ and ‘do I still have time to find a co-host for the show’ seemed very pressing for no good reason. Creamy kept them to himself.
