Elite roleplay: Off station

OFF STATION

Your ship, deep space, anything that is not happening inside the Citi Gateway or Ingaba...

General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

Meowers"Don't worry. You're fast as well."

It wasn't an obvious wince that JB demonstrated, but a wince nonetheless. Ina may as well have told him that "It happens to all men at some time".

The closer they got to Lozin the more he noticed that ships weren't jumping into that system. It was Imperial Corsair territory and the pirates... Corsairs... there patrolled their borders vigilantly against enemies and snooping eyes.

The Cuckoo finally dropped into the Lozin system. The last few jumps had been rushed and the temperature of the ship had become dangerously hot. JB brought them to a stop and brought up the FSS Scanner to pinpoint the beacon's exact position.

"Right..." JB began, linking his screen to the copilot seat, "Over there, Lozin ABC 8 B, it's the second of six moons. I'll take us in closer, see what's going on. This is Imperial Corsair space, I've worked with some of them in the past but none of them owe me any favours."

Almost on cue, two Clippers neared with both sporting IMCR IDs. They took a quick scan of The Cuckoo, saw that they were allied then carried on with their patrol. JB sighed with relief then proceeded towards the beacon.

"Check out that location will you, Muir... please," he added, remembering his manners, "See what we're dealing with down there."

Ina was standing near the synthesizer panel, finishing her last preparations, checking every newly synthesized magazine: it was four of them and each must fit well and tight, making rifle ammo counter showing right numbers. Then four carrying belts, one on each arm, one on each hip, to attach that ammo to the sides, easy to access and reload.

"Aw. Clumsy me now. But it's completely okay... What?", Ina heard JB's words, already moving to the co-pilot seat, "Sure."

"Something is starting at last. Sitting here and watching the stars is good, but... I can do it on my own anyway."

She put the rifle in the seat side clamps and occupied the seat, turning her face to the navigation screen. "Lozin ABC 8 B... Well... Worthless frozen dust-ridden piece of rock... Small piece of rock, low gravity. Very low. Common turd world without any value of its own... And nothing of interest... Except... Yeah, this one... That signal coming from the surface, perhaps it's our target... Can't be anything else than some kind of small outpost", Ina was trying to gather and analyse bits of scarce data from the scanner, "It's landable, but not present in PilotFed map network. No usual market and other operations... Private station". Her eyes was moving from side to side as she was scaling and scrolling the map, opening various information windows, "The system itself is... Classic outskirts place, low activity. No major starports... Two orbital outposts and one on the surface... ABC 11 D body, too far away. Bunch of usual... Yeah, pretty usual signals of some space debris and other deteriorated transmissions... Yeah. I think I got it. Sending the surface coordinates to you... Now", Ina tapped the screen where the signal information was displayed, ran through the menus, and navigation marker appeared on JB's pilot interface.

"So", Ina closed her navscreen and faced JB, concluding her thoughts, "Small private outpost. Few to no civilians. If things go the violent way, it's fire at will. But as it's a rescue operation, I'll follow your instructions on how to keep this smooth and quiet. I'll be around just in case, while you talk our way through. Maybe knowing that you have fire support will make something easier for you. Within", then she added, "You know... Trust or not... Team or not... We have something like similar goals there. Just don't try to leave without me, and we'll be fine."

"And yeah... If you wanted to talk, I think, it's the last chance today".

MeowersJust don't try to leave without me, and we'll be fine.

Again, JB felt the need to check the rifle wasn't pointed at the back of his head. He was usually good at reading people, they often reveal what drives them early doors but the trust thing was keeping Ina a closed book. She seemed professional enough, that should be enough to get them through the job.

JB had sent a message out when he realised they were heading into Corsair territory, his Comms Unit flashed up a response from his contact within the Imperial Corsairs, Saverio de Carrara. He was an officer in their ranks that JB had worked with in the past.

"My contact's just messaged me," announced JB, making sure Ina felt she was in the loop. "He said that isn't a Corsair outpost, they're letting some other outfit stay there so long as they pay them a tithe. If we end up having to light them up, it's unlikely the locals will care much."

JB formulated the next part in his head as the two Jamaica Inn DBXs fell into formation beside them.

"We can do a "Scottish Lord" hustle to get in. We'll go in as Corsair inspectors, tell them that we're there to make sure they're not hiding anything from the tithe. I'll be the officer and you're the muscle so it won't be unheard of that you've got your rifle..."

JB unbuckled himself and got up out of his chair, the maglocks on his boots clicking as they activated.

"Trouble is, we don't look like Corsairs. I've got some clothing in Cabin 2 we can look through. I'm sure we can find something if you're good with that?"
08 May 2021, 3:36pm
"And what that Corsairs look like? Never saw one before in person, out of the ship. Hope nothing too kinky."

"Yeah. Sure", Ina replied, also getting out of her seat, "Lead the way. It's all okay if it's nothing too kinky. But if I'll be playing your bodyguard, I guess it won't be far from what I wear now."

"And...", she added, planting her magboots on the floor and following JB out of the cockpit, "That's a bit odd... Those Imps... Feds... Alliance... They seem pretty pissed off when I hamper their profits. But... Nevermind. I don't know how Corsairs operate. It may be not much of a profit. Or they just don't care. Or it's a temporary installation. Whatever. Anyway, I don't really care about having... tense talks with another type of Imps afterwards. One more, one less... Lead the way."
08 May 2021, 8:19pm
JB hadn't noticed how tall Ina was whilst she was sitting down, he was no short-arse himself but found himself slouching a little less when he walked past her.

He made his way through to Cabin 2. JB smuggled people these days. Not slaves but crime lords, gang bosses and any kind of scumbag with deep pockets. These guys expected a certain level of comfort when they travelled. The Cuckoo might look like a tramp's shoe on the outside but, on the inside, no expense was spared. This misdirection often kept politicians and their sordid little secrets out of the Galnet broadcasts.

"It's not exactly kinky but black leather should do," JB mumbled as he pawed through some clothing that had been left by previous passengers. "I've no plans to ditch you there, Muir, you had people burn you that bad in the past?"
08 May 2021, 10:47pm
"Oh. Wow. Personal questions. And personality issues. Okaaay... This is one of my favourite topics..."

"Black leather is fine. Loved 'em in my teens", Ina replied, loosening belts with spare ammo attached to them, that were on her arms, "Fake leather, of course, but looked awesome... And about people... Can't name somebody exactly. It's more about events happening. And our reactions to them. And how world reacts on us. And then the new events. And so on. These things form your personality over years. Give you a shape. You have yours, I have mine. So... Here". Ina took off her military-style olive jacket, that she was wearing over a violet standard issue flightsuit, and gave it to JB.

"To say or not to say? Phah. Okay. I like these talks anyway, never hurts."

"So. People tend to develop various mechanisms. To socialize, to reach their goals, to survive. So my ones is about being self-sufficient and prepared for anything. Yours, as I can see, revolve around keeping selected things silent, and talking other things smart. Can be a reflection of the past", Ina was talking with her usual calm tone, however trying to sound laconic, given the circumstances, "Mine one was harsh and pretty spartan. Your, perhaps, was in unfriendly environment of other kind. Where people could be your luck or your enemy. You had to choose your words. I had to act, even without words. Eventually it shaped us into who we are now. Even your ship, built to keep things in secret, run fast, keep out of trouble, don't attract much attention, but to feel like home. Contraband vessel? Fits your type well. And you're looking confident doing it. Otherwise, that Shield won't be contacting you. You tend to keep your pride. Speed, remember? So, years of experience. From the young times, perhaps. Human psyche is flexible. Bend it too fast, you'll have a trauma. It changes over years".

Having said that, Ina was standing and looking at JB, waiting for any answer to come. And for jacket that would fit her too.

JB turned to face Ina, a smile on his face. She had him bang to rights. As much as he liked to think he could read others' personalities, Ina had his pants down.

"Way off," he lied, finally truly acknowledging her. Still he was getting no clues other than that she had been let down by people she trusted. "So why are you freelance? Why hasn't anyone snapped you up?"
08 May 2021, 11:37pm
"That was... personal or professional?", Ina raised an eyebrow. She wasn't surprised, however, just had to mark the ambiguity of JB's question somehow. "So, professional... I worked as a tech for some companies. No good. Now I'm just flying around the bubble, helping various folks, without any ties to them. Good money, good state of mind, and I see and talk to people only when I want to. Any other time... I can watch. Think. Contemplate. And personal is personal."

"So... I was right?", she added with a slight shrug, "Phah. Anyway, it's just a theory. I can be wrong. And you won't be saying anything, probably, that's... Not your type".
09 May 2021, 8:50am
JB took out a long black jacket, held up in front of Ina to see if it would fit then passed it to her. There was a black leather duster behind it, he took that out for himself. He removed his brown leather, battered jacket and put it on the white duvet covered bed then pulled the duster on.

"So you said your ship's still in the docks back in Citi Gateway... what are you flying, Muir? You said you're a combat pilot but I can't see you in 'Vette. So... Krait? FDL? Gunship?"

Last edit: 09 May 2021, 11:01am
09 May 2021, 11:24am
"Looks like he's not having any interest in... my topics. Phah, who am I kidding, again. Anyway, at least I had shown that I'm not a militaristic freak with a gun kink."

"Yeah, that would fit fine, thanks", Ina took a jacket and put it on, placing belts with ammo back on her arms. "Yeah, almost like I had in... 17? 19? Phah. But it's not fake this time. Perhaps. And... Yeah. These Corsairs, they have a bit of style, sure", she said, looking in the mirror. "And ship... Yeah, a Fer-de-Lance. Named her 'Marshmallow'. Lovely ship. Fits me perfectly too. PilotFed callsign 'Meowers'. Phah, I doubt you heard about."

"I bet he'll be checking it anyway, so why not to say it now."

"One of those youth last-name based nicknames, can't say I don't like it, but sticking to my name for any other type of business and conversations... No fancy backstory again, just... keeping my things in my order. So, we're all set now?"
09 May 2021, 11:50am
JB stopped and closed the closet door.

"So you fly around, hire yourself to factions you have no links to, fly on... that sounds lonely," observed JB as he popped the collar on the duster, "As much as I like my own space, I've always been a part of something else... for better or worse. Had that never bothered you? That if one of those wars goes the wrong way you could be gone... and nobody knows? Just another loss on a battlefield?"

He didn't want to sound like he was judging Ina, or that he was telling her off, but that was just JB projecting his own insecurities. As an only child without any parents around he always wanted to be a part of something, to not be alone. It was ingrained in him. The thought of people just floating through life on their own made his brain itch.
09 May 2021, 1:16pm
"Perhaps. I don't know that... Feeling? Or what it might be. Of 'being a part'. Haven't developed it. Yeah, it can sound lonely. I have connections to some people... Can use fingers of one hand to count, phah. I don't want to be a source for grave news for them. Even knowing that we may never meet. That keeps me sane enough, knowing when to back off. So I have something to lose too".

Ina stood there for a few seconds, staring somewhere with an unfocused sight, thinking, and then added, "I like how it goes. It's comfortable for me. So I'm just... Living. I like the path I go, and being myself brought me to that point. And if you like the path, you'll eventually reach some destination. But if you don't... Then you may not need this destination. Regardless of your today's 'wants'. And it would be some wasted years that you can't take back".

Lounging in his throne-like chair with The Count of Monti Cristo in one hand and Jacquelines’ medical report in the other Vengerfield read with an impassive face. Jacqueline had her head bowed waiting to be dismissed so she could hide away in her little storage room behind the converted atrium.

“Good. He took my hits well. I see no mention of micro-fractures; did you do a thorough medical as I commanded girl?”

Bowing lower, Jacqueline answered honestly. “Oui Oui monseigneur. The man has very dense bones leading to stronger muscle fibers, and that protected him well. But the trauma you caused bruised his organs and that has done damage that I cannot repair quickly votre excellence”

“How long until I can question the boy again.. . Safely?”

That took some guesswork. Jacqueline had trained to help people, not patch them up to send them back into an unwinnable fight.
“Ahhh three standard days with a good diet and the prober healing agent votre excellence”

Pushing the medical slate under the young woman’s nose, Vengerfield looked at her for the first time today. She had been changed to remind Creamy of Nerys, but Vengerfield saw an echo of his ex-lover and partner. Thinking of that woman raised both his anger and desire in equal measure. He was inhaling deeply through his nose as electric energy coursed down his arms and he had to stop himself from hitting or taking her.

“Here” he said putting the other slate on top of the medical slate “Take them to your room and then get me Dyson and tell him to bring the covas. After that, go to the galley and get my meal; you may prepare yourself self-anything you like. Tomorrow, make Creamy as ready as you can for the late afternoon. Dismissed”

The mighty man had hardly moved, but to Jacqueline he may as well have been pacing back and forth like an animal wondering whether or not it was going to attack. Wasting no time, she bowed and ran to her room and put the reading slates on her bed. After just a little more work, she would be free to think. She had to think of a way to help the man called Goodness beat Lord Vengerfield.

She knew for a fact that the man was going to kill her after he had finished with his hostage.

"Each to their own, I guess.," JB shrugged, "I can spend weeks away from Grandma's House... erm, HQ back home... but I like knowing there's a home to go back to. We might nause and rip the piss out of each other but it's the closest most of us have to a family. No family of your own then, Muir? I thought with the jacket and the guns that you might be an Navy kid, your folks not military?"

"Each to their own, exactly", Ina nodded and even smiled a bit, "I tend to think that this galaxy is my home. Yeah, I rent a living compartment in... one of the Independent worlds. To drop myself in and drop my guard being in there. But it could be any other Independent system as well. As I've said, I like being distant. Communicating with people I like", she patted her pocket with handheld comm device in it, "And being too far away from others to reach me, even if I'm somewhere near in person. Maybe one day I become rich and order myself a Carrier to live on it. Who knows."

"And the military things...", she added then, "I just like it. You may see, I'm used to live spartan. And they meant to last and endure. Fits me well. Family though... It's a miss. Mom's retired by now, was a Fed clerk. Father is just a straight away arsehole. Phah, I even took mom's last name. Haven't seen her in last two years though, just messaging. Hardly can name this a family, and no fancy stories here too".
