Elite roleplay: Off station

OFF STATION

Your ship, deep space, anything that is not happening inside the Citi Gateway or Ingaba...

General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

Michael narrows his eyes, noting the precision and sureness with which Katie handles the weapons.

"Since you were... what, exactly?"
22 May 2021, 6:21pm
Veronica gives Ridge a crooked smile.

"A copper. City of London, Earth. I learned 'ow to use this stuff on an advanced weapons trainin' course. I came sixth in my class. Mind you, there was only eight of us. Anyway, it's 'istory now."
22 May 2021, 6:24pm
For a moment, Ridge states at the woman.

"Earth girl," he mutters. "That explains a lot."
22 May 2021, 6:48pm
"Oh yeah? An' what's that s'posed to mean?"

Veronica holds up her hand before Ridge can reply.

"Never mind," she says quickly. "You'll only make another smart-arsed crack. Now, let's get movin', shall we? I'll fire up the SRV in bay 2. See you on the surface. Don't forget to bring yer AI."

She stalks off down the corridor to find the vehicle hangars (with the help of the schematic on her data slate).

GamwiseSamji93"4...3....2...1...ENGAGE"

The ship launched into Hyperspace. Stars, multi-colored clouds and a myriad of colors passed by. In a matter of seconds the ship dropped out of hyperspace and supercruise engaged and Sam began aligning the ship with a small white dot labeled "Oberth Station".

"Alright here we are, it'll be a bit like I said so we can engage Cruise assist and step away. Wanna play some cards? Or just relax and watch the stars of the passing planets? Up to you. At any rate, are you okay?"

Sam waited for a response in his pilot's chair.

I watched the stars. 'What is it with this guy and cards?'

"I've never visited this region before." I called up the galactic map on the console, studied it for a while and made a decision.

"Some guy followed me around Gateway for a couple of days. I guess I was on his watchlist. There's always at least one such low-life in galactic bars. Sitting, quietly nursing a beer, trying not to stand out. Always watching, noticing, collecting info on who comes and goes."

I waited, but Sam said nothing.

"Thing is, I found some low-temperature diamonds, salvaging the usefull stuff you find floating around after a battle, or in conflict zones. That made them stolen. Carried them around in my hold for a few months, with vague ideas of giving them back. Maybe someone noticed, put the word around. In the end I passed them on gratis to an old friend. Maybe my past caught up with me?"

It was a rhetorical question.

"I'm pretty sure I wasn't followed to the docks or off-station. The last I saw of the guy was being carried off by medi-vac. Apparantly ran head-first into something imoveable. Just thought I should say something. It's probably nothing. Drop me at the nearest outpost if you like."

"Jacqueline... Hold tight", Ina grabbed her by the waist and stepped off the roof, aiming at the metal walkway below them.

JB was surprised at how well Creamy could drive a bust-to-shit SRV, in reverse, through a huge cloud of dust. However he was doing it... it worked.

A small squad of bandits ran out of the outpost, misjudging the difference between having their maglocks activated and the low-g dusty surface outside. They flailed a little which gave JB the chance to line up the turret's crosshairs. The jury-rigged turret wasn't great but it sprayed out enough hot death to get the job done.

At first only one of the two cannons started... then, after a few seconds of warming up, the second cannon kicked in. The sights weren't zeroed in well but the rounds chewed through three of the five men as JB strafed across the line of goons. They were going too fast for JB to bring the turret back around for a second attempt but it didn't matter too much as the SRV, mid air, sent a poorly welded ammo-canister skipping across the ground... sending one of the troops flying like a 7/10 split. The remaining gunman dropped his rifle and scrambled for cover.

JB had pretty much lost his bearings after the SRV lost its front wheel but, as Creamy reversed them around another corner, JB caught sight of the landing pads.

"Easy... and... down."

The Misadventure's loading arm secures both the Thargoid Probe and the Guardian Relic into place. Both SRVs are surfaceside, guests amid the insectoid alien architecture. It is night, the only illumination being from the ship or the floodlights of their vehicles.

Ridge drives up to his partner's vehicle, his voice somewhat marred by signal interference. "We need to get inside. Once we're in, we'll need to find the..."

A familiar roar sounds overhead. An ominous glow is speeding nearer and nearer, moving too fast to be anything benevolent. Michael's eyes widen.

"Move!
22 May 2021, 9:05pm
The Hunter narrows his eyes. There's a ship and two SRVs, but the priority is clear. He targets the vehicle holding the precious relic, lining up his plasma accelerators, firing a single shot with inhuman accuracy...

JB Threepwood

JB had pretty much lost his bearings after the SRV lost its front wheel but, as Creamy reversed them around another corner, JB caught sight of the landing pads.

Doing his best to ignore what JB was doing with the turret, Creamy concentrated on looking for a sign of the girls. This was almost like driving over the autumn fields back home; in the mud, it was usually better to drive backwards rather than try to turn around. Creamy had been feathering the thrust out of habit; he always flew the scarabs on an alien surface because it was safer than driving at speed when a rouge rock could ruin your day.

The sudden kick of the thrusters igniting was a surprise, but a welcome one. The SRV bucked still traveling backwards with its nose in the air and Creamy expertly stabilised the buggy until he could bring the thing back down. Before he did, Creamy found what he had been looking for. An expulsion of debris and people too close to an upper airlock drew a line in the air to the girl sailing like avenging angles towards a beaten up old bucket of a ship. The raiders that had managed to keep themselves together were going to be a problem for the pair.

“We can’t have that can we?” hummed Creamy hoping the SRV had enough juice to match his intentions.

Giving the motivators the last push the stick had to offer, Creamy put the SRV back on the ground and looked for something to hit. A stack of scaffold would have to do as Creamy pointed the scarabs arse at the block like Keelback. The wheels hit, and shortly after the one middle wheel caused an unhelpful jolt before the wheeless front right strut turned the reversing jump into a spin.

On the way around, Creamy could see the girls, the ship, and the trajectory he was on. This was going to take some correcting. He mentally cracked his knuckles and got on with it. Creamy was no amazing pilot or top ace dogfighter, but he could land anything anywhere and, this was just a spin and a bad approach to the pad, or as Creamy called it, Saturday night parking. His hands and feet played the controls like an instrument, expertly moving the SRVs flight path into something like a boomerang effect.

He came up high in between the girls and the raiders that were still together enough to fire on them. Their shots impacted on the shields adding percussion to Creamys’ aerial symphony. All he had to do now was put it down and not run over the ladies. The wheels made contact with the top of the ships' cockpit and Creamy struggled to keep hold of the controls. He carefully angled the thrust not to blast out the back in case he toasted the girls and pumped the breaks to stop the thing from skidding. The downward thrust made the two struts missing wheels ding into the ship's armour, scoring two shallow furrows in the hull plating.

The painful screeching of the struts on the hull vibrated through the SRV but it did aid in stopping. Creamy turned around and gave JB another thumbs up before opening the SRV to check the girls had landed safely. He really hoped this ship had a top hatch.

McLaughlin scanned various sensors and instruments as they came out of witchspace and emerged near the nav beacon of the Tata system. The Commodre frowned as he looked at his contacts panel. Some FSS patrols and a couple of haulers and Lakon transporters moving from the nav beacon directly to Wingrove. Peaceful. This brought a scowl to McLaughlin's face.

"Wingrove station is 303Ls from the star Sir, shall I plot a route to the station? Tanaka's voice came to Mclaughlin from behind him. The Legionnaire was currently manning the Co-Pilot seat and scrolling through the navigation panel, taking note of the local scenery and any points of interest in the vicinity. "Any sights you'd recommend for a holiday Tanaka?" McLaughlin asked in a light tone. Tanaka scanned through the navigation panel before sighing and beckoning Tada over to take a look. Tada was wearing his armour at this point, sans the helmet which he held at his side.

Tada looked at the panel, raising an eyebrow at Tanaka before turning to address McLaughlin. "Of course Commodre, you only take us to the nicest places." Tada turned to the panel again as he ran through the list. "We've got Wingrove Station which I assume you'll want to go straight to, there's a couple of planetary outposts and..." Tada turned to McLaughlin with a strained smile. I don't like where this is going. "...a Federal military base." This statement was followed by a silence that persisted for a few moments in the Crusader's cockpit.

Federal Military Base.

McLaughlin sighed. "Well, I would be lying if I said that didn't complicate things somewhat." Tanaka turned from the nav panel and addressed the Commodre directly now, "Sir, how can we be sure that Threepwood didn't just feed you a false tip to get us off his back? As it stands if we cause any commotion in this system we're gonna have Fed cops and navy coming down on us." Tada stepped over to McLaughlin's side looking at the senor and Contact panels. "This is a system we would typically go out of our way to avoid, are you sure about this Sir?" McLaughlin answered while plotting a course to Wingrove and putting the ship on a new heading.

"If I wanted to hide an Alliance VIP this is where I'd put her. Somewhere we would never dare to go."

McLaughlin turned to the two of them, "Both of you put your dancing shoes on, you're going for a walk." Tada and Tanaka gave a crisp "Yes Sir!" in response before the two of them made their way to the back of the ship to put their gear on in anticpation of what was to come.

McLaughlin watched the time tick by until they would arrive.

This gonna be a rescue or assassination? Whoever brought her here... are they expecting trouble after what happened to Gilbert? McLaughlin frowned, Still too much we don't know, first we need to gather info and find out what the hell is going on. Best case, I go in and hand Barboni a fat stack of credits for his trouble, grab the civilian and fuck off back to Thurston.

McLaughlin did a check on the sidearm strapped to his thigh. Worst case... we'll cross that bridge if it comes up.

Descartes

Sam waited for Descartes to finish speaking.

"Okay, so some idiot would be pirate crossed the wrong girl...I'm not going to just drop you off...Any way you didn't answer my question....
Are you oka--"

Suddenly red flashing lights and an urgent message came across the message board.

"S.O.S. Pirates have engaged our Transport. Shields are down, FSD is malfunctioning. We have women and children onboard. I repeat women and children are onboard. Please help.
message will repeat.... S.O.S....."

Sam straightened up in his seat, slammed back his tea and said,

"Lets go help. pirates attacking innocent women and children on a transport? Assholes..."

His face stern and his hands almost acting before his mind.

"Strap in, we're going to drop in on this distress signal."

The ship dropped out of supercruise, lasers colored the open space before them. A type 7 transport was crawling toward a small brown planet. Three ships we're circling around the transport ship peppering the hull with blasts of lasers, launching hatch breaker limpets and collector limpets which were carrying cargo to the attacking ships.

"Okay, looks like two vipers and a cobra. Let me scan for kill warrants then we are going in. We'll hit the cobra first. Get his attention away from the other two and tear him apart. You've got control of the lasers, and I've got the cannons. Give me a heads up when shields are down and I'll tear them apart."

Sam, moving with surprising speed for such a large man, was moving between displays and controls of the ship in matters of seconds. The ship slowed down and then pulsed forward boosting through the black towards the transport ship that desperately needed help.

"Local authorities are notified and should be sending a wing to come help, but we need to get in there and help before this ship becomes scrap."

Sam opened a channel to the transport ship

"Lakon Transport BH-74, this is Lakon Golf Alpha Mike independent Pilot's Federation pilot and crew. We are here to help. We will help get the buzzards off your back. You focus on getting those women and children to safety at the planet side landing pad below."

The only response back was static or panicked screaming before a nervous and panicked female pilot responded,

"Thank you commander, we are not doing so good. Systems are failing and the people are getting scared. If you can get these pirates off our back we'd be forever in your debt. Hurry before they---"

The line went dead.

"C'mon Descartes let's go help these people," Sam said as the hard points deployed and the ship boosted again towards the battle lying before them.

"You're tellin' me, mate!"

Veronica gives her SRV full throttle. The vehicle lurches forward, narrowly avoiding a large and inconveniently positioned rock suddenly illuminated by the headlights. Steering a zig-zag away from the Misadventure, Veronica risks a glance up at the approaching enemy vessel, for that was surely what it was. She can see no sign of any natural cover in the immediate vicinity. The only real hiding place lies a little under a kilometre away, within the Thargoid structure itself.

As she aligns the SRV, Veronica notices the glow of the shot from the Fer de Lance's plasma accelerator lighting up the darkness from behind her...
23 May 2021, 10:20am
Michael dodges and zigzags, plasma impacting around him, leaving the ground and SRV scorched. Ridge squeezes his eyes shut, temporarily blinded and scrambling for cover.

"Godsdammit!"

He guns the buggy forward, more plasma impacting around him. And will only take one to end everything...
23 May 2021, 12:16pm
Veronica hears Ridge's curse over her comms. She peers into the darkness, but her view of his SRV has become blocked by a sharp rise in the terrain to her left. The Fer de Lance is clearly visible up above, however, weaving and banking in the sky on the other side of the rise. Veronica sees it launch another bolt of plasma towards the surface.

"Bloody 'ell!"

Picking a precarious path between rocks and gullies, Veronica drives as fast as she dare. Suddenly the ground flattens out, and Veronica is momentarily blinded by Ridge's headlights. The Fer de Lance releases yet another plasma bolt, which narrowly misses both vehicles as they pass by eachother in the gloom.

"Ridge!" calls Veronica on the comms, "ditch the cargo! It's yer only chance!"
23 May 2021, 5:34pm
Creamy Goodness IIICreamy turned around and gave JB another thumbs up before opening the SRV to check the girls had landed safely. He really hoped this ship had a top hatch.

Falling down at 0.05G is very much like just floating in the space at its first seconds, so Ina just stepped off the roof, holding Jacqueline by the waist with her left arm and rifle with right one, and they slowly started to descend on a metal walkway below them.

Suddenly a beaten SRV appeared from around the corner, and it was moving oddly backwards, it was missing some wheels, thrusters were letting out a dark smoke and turret was badly unbalanced.

"What the heck?! Shit, they're just keep coming!"

Ina tried to rotate herself, covering Jacqueline, and pointed a rifle at the SRV, ready to defend. Shooting a heavy rifle using only one hand was a challenge even for her, but it was the only option at the moment. Ina tried to aim at the cockpit... Until she saw Creamy at the controls. He turned at their side, accelerated, trying to keep the vehicle straight, and then activated the thrusters to jump and catch them mid-air, allowing Ina's and Jacqueline's magboots to contact with the top side of SRV.

And then bunch of bandits that was chasing that SRV appeared from around the same corner and they started firing, forcing Creamy to pull out the most strange manoeuvre, rotating the SRV to make the shots hit its bottom side. Ina tried to keep her balance, holding Jacqueline and the rifle, until SRV finally leveled, which was not as fast as usual with malfunctioning thrusters.

"Okay, Jacqueline. Sit down and grab something to hold on to it. Perhaps it was their plan."

"Goddammit. Guys completely forgot about the comms. Have to say something about this crap as soon as we reach the ship."

SRV almost reached The Cuckoo when Ina jumped off its back, pushing it with her hands to make low-gravity descent faster and planted her boots on a metal landing pad right before the ship's boarding ramp. Bandits were approaching, they were shooting on the move, trying to hit the big target of the SRV, and shots had been closer and closer each second. So she quickly got down to the ground, unfolded the bipod and opened return fire.

"Get to the ship while I hold them off", Ina commanded to the comms, firing short bursts to suppress the incoming bandits, without aiming at somebody in particular, however, the red blood cloud clearly visible even at that distance told that her kill tally here wasn't closed yet. Opponents were forced to stop their advance and hit the ground too, using terrain as a cover.

Hearing the metal sound of landed SRV behind her, she repeated, "Go! Get to the ship!"
