Elite roleplay: Off station

OFF STATION

Your ship, deep space, anything that is not happening inside the Citi Gateway or Ingaba...

General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

"Hmm... What we have here... A personal dataslate. All-in-one simple consumer grade thing, no fancy stuff. Perhaps it's some kind of software that controls these bands... So, software list... Porn... Porn... 'How to grow a beard'... Masculinity advices library... More porn... Games... Videos of his drunk mates... Catalogues of some kinky shops... Ah. Got it. Bands remote control util. State: locked, pair 1: engaged, pair 2: engaged, interlock: disengaged... Here. 'Panic button: unlock and disengage'"

"Creamy, that's your lucky day", said Ina, turning her face to Creamy. "Disengaging the locks... Now", she pressed the dataslate screen and all four of Creamy's bands unlocked with a clicking sound, they now were hanging loosely on his arms and legs.

"So, I have an idea", she continued then, looking at unlocked bands with a bit of relief, "You'll take his suit", Ina nodded towards Vodan, who was lying on the floor knocked out, "Then we put these things on him, and I'll engage all the locks. And then I'll take his slate with me to open the locker, and we'll close the cell door too, leaving him here tied. Is that would be okay?"

Creamy, who had his feet on Vodans’ shoulders while he was pulling the helmet ring off Vodans’ head suddenly found his wrists and ankles free of each other causing him to fall onto his back and rock like an overturned tortoise for a moment triumphantly holding the helmet ring and connected life support unit.

Endeavouring to regain some dignity while depriving Vodan of his, Creamy gave Muir a thumbs-up shaking off his magnetic manacles like a dog shaking his wet legs and letting them drift to the bed. He was very glad to find Vodan at least had clean underwear on, but he still avoided breathing in. Creamy didn’t want to know what the suit smelled like until he had to.

“What do you think of Ms Muirs’ idea old boy?” he asked the chap outside.
14 May 2021, 7:09pm
"Sounds good to me," replied JB, "The name's JB by the way, we're here on behalf of Sovereign Shield... and Muir's right, we need to keep you safe first and this ugly bastard tied-up. You're our priority, Mr Goodness, we'll help your friend if we can but, whatever it takes, we're getting you on a ship out of here."

JB had been keeping an eye on the corridor, he occasionally looked back into the room to make sure things were moving along but, for some reason, this rescue involved a lot more blokes with their arses out than he'd anticipated.

This Creamy guy looked pretty beaten up. There was a bit of bravado but it seemed to be masking the injuries he was clearly carrying.

"You're not looking too good there, mate. Can you handle yourself if things get... lively?"

“Oh yes, don’t worry about me KB, I’ll be fine.. .. as long as the big fellow isn’t out there. .. Umm, anyway, as long as we make a good effort to find the young woman being kept here, I’ll follow along like a loyal attack dog” Answered Creamy struggling into someone else’s trousers.

This would be the second time he was going to try and make his escape in clothes too tight for him. Creamy had to wonder if this was the way his life was going to be now. A few months of normalcy followed by fighting for his life, and that of the people he met along the way eventually running with the odds stacked against him in clothes at least one size too small.

"Now, what are we looking at? I’ve been as far as the big room on the other end of the corridor and I can still smell the young woman’s soap. Jasmine blossom and apple; rather reminds one of summer evenings in the.. Have you ever visited a temperate garden on an earth-like world?” mused Creamy sounding somewhat wistful.

JB was born in a city on an Earthlike world. The temperate gardens there smelt of wet garbage.

"I was hoping there'd be more than one way out of that big room. Muir, did you scope the control room... I can't risk those guns obliterating us when we take off. To be fair, we could do with all the records being wiped... I can't remember what name I've got the ship's ID as but let's not leave them any clues."

JB saw that Creamy was pretty much dressed. Rather it was him wearing the grufty bastard's clothes.
14 May 2021, 9:09pm
"Phah. Poor fellow. Is he's so carelessly romantic, or just hungry for female attention, as they do usually? Perhaps he's been here for long."

"Phah... Attack... Be it attack or not, we're not expecting you to fight. Just run somewhere or hide somewhere if we say so. And this second hostage... I will look. Don't worry", Ina said, putting the bands on Vodan, "Watch this". Then she tapped a dataslate screen, and bands immediately locked on Vodan's wrists and ankles with quite loud clicks. "Aaaaand... this", she tapped the screen again, and soon Vodan became locked in a weird position with his hands pulled to his feet, still being knocked out and laying on the floor like a bag.

"Sure", Ina replied to JB, "They have a control room. Pretty much everything are operated from there. I'll need some kind of distraction to get into there though, but I'm thinking about it now. And also this place is a dupe. They're doing nothing. Perhaps it was built to keep him here", she nodded towards Creamy.

"Have to deal with this little guard booth though...", Ina said, getting her pistol out of its holster and heading towards the door, "Just... Creamy. Don't forget your meds here. We don't want to see you collapsing on our way back".

"C'mon then, Mr Goodness," JB said as he put his hand on Creamy's shoulder. "Stay close and let me know if you need help, it's low-G here so, if nothing else, one of us can carry you."

JB looked around the cell, there was a comms panel beside the door. The last thing they needed was someone checking on the prisoner and seeing a half-naked guide... or the guide waking up and calling in the cavalry. JB took a quick backhand and smashed the device with the butt of the pistol.

"And at some point..." JB continued, "...we're really going to have to get you to a doctor."

Putting his hand on Muirs' Creamy shook his head. He remembered how it felt when his captors did that to him enjoying their spot.

“While I’m sure this person deserves it, one should be gracious in defeat and humble in victory. I am confident you are a much better person then this lot Ms Muir. As for the medication, the nice young lady told me the drip contains a healing agent and pain killer so I imagin they will be in my system for a while yet, but thank you for your concern”

JB Threepwood"C'mon then, Mr Goodness," JB said as he put his hand on Creamy's shoulder. "Stay close and let me know if you need help, it's low-G here so, if nothing else, one of us can carry you."

There was only one Doctor Creamy was interested in, but he was glad she was nowhere near this place and hopefully, thousands of light years away exploring uncharted space. She had talked about the lure of the void often and if she was out there, the people chasing Nerys would never find her.

There was a doctor close by that still needed help, but Creamy didn’t know if these two were really here to rescue him. His captors hadn’t been behaving like normal kidnappers, well as normal as raiders that have no compulsion sealing people can get.

Creamy felt this bunch were playing a long game trying to brake him, and after so long in a box and then a professional level beating, a tall beautiful woman and battel hardened tough guy would be a dream made flesh. Maybe they were here to win his confidence, or just another ray of hope to be taken away further testing Creamys’ bending resolve.

“Thank you BC, but I am full of vim and vigour and eager to going. As I mentioned, the young lady being kept here is a medical practitioner, and she would be invaluable asset to the rescue effort if your vessel does not have a medical officer.. .. you did say you are from Sovereign Shield did you not?” answered Creamy Standing ready to go.

“If we shoot the guard in the box, well lose the element of surprise, but I’m ready for a fight”

"Okay. You both stand here and wait for my signal. I'll say when it's clear. Don't forget to close the door. And Creamy, don't forget your meds", Ina said, standing near the door with pistol in one hand and Vodan's dataslate in another, "I'll try to find this woman, if she knows what to do, she could help you on our way back. We're getting out of here".

Then she quickly moved into the doorway, aiming her pistol at the guard booth and hiding the dataslate behind her back, and started walking forward. She could shoot right now, piercing the thin metal of the booth side wall, with a great chance to fatally wound anybody that was there, so small was this construction, but decided to aim at the window, waiting for anybody to show their face, coming closer to place a better shot.

VodanThere should have been someone in the awkwardly placed guard post, or more accurately guard box at the corner of the long corridor. Vodan stopped to look in the visor like narrow window that bisected the off structure at head high. Whoever should have been on ‘coffin duty’ was obviously using the alert raised by the rubbish-skip landing to abandon his post and take time to come back.
One step... Two... Ten... Still nobody to shoot at. Booth was empty. Ina took a quick look around the corner of the corridor. Only to see nobody again.

"It's empty. Path is clear. Move out now".
15 May 2021, 6:17pm
JB guided Creamy out of the cell, closed it behind them then pressed "LOCK" on the screen, causing a soft clunk from within the sturdy metal door. He could feel his adrenaline rising... he couldn't be bothered to take his helmet off to have a slug on his hipflask, instead promising himself that he'd polish off the bottle of bourbon he had in his quarters once he gets back to The Cuckoo.

He took the safety off his pistol. The gun, much like The Cuckoo, may not have looked much but it packed a punch. JB kept his other hand on Creamy's shoulder, not to push him but to make sure he knew where he was. From past experience he knew how easy it was for people to get split up once the guns started barking.

"There's a gun locker by the door," informed a hushed JB, "Treat yourself to something pretty."

"Okay", Ina said quietly, seeing JB and Creamy going towards her, "I'm going to walk there casually, like it's okay, we just had split up for a bit. I'll open the locker, take my rifle back and be waiting for you. If anyone shows up and won't be happy about you two wandering around, they'll got vaporized".

Saying that, Ina put her pistol back into the holster and walked towards the locker, gladly noting that dark room remained completely dark and quiet, without any noises, people roaming around and any other unwanted signs of any alert. That technician was still sitting at the throne-chair too busy with COVAS core to pay attention to anything, and sound of magboots walking back was quite expected. She opened the weapon locker, pressing Vodan's slate against the reader device. Locker answered with a faint rattling of opening door, and Ina opened it fully to take her weapon back and put the dataslate inside - when Creamy choose any weapon of what's present there and close the locker, it would be a nice puzzle to remove Vodan's bands. Which were operated from a slate. Which had been put into a locker, that are opened by a same slate.

Ina slung the rifle belt over her neck and shoulder and loaded the magazine, which was squeezed in her pocket all that time, trying to make as few loud sounds as possible, just in case. Now she was standing there, waiting near the weapon locker, and one odd thing was attracting her attention...

"Hmmm... I haven't seen this before... A green indicator of an opened airlock door, and a faint line of light from a room behind it... Airlock had opened, and it's not sealed now... I have to wait for those two then I'll check this thing..."

“Err no thank you. I’m not a gun guy, I may be more danger to you than the intended targets”

This supposed rescuer was keeping close, but this wasn’t like any SS extraction he’d been part of. Whether or not he was being tricked or taken by another party, they were moving out and that was the direction Creamy wanted to go, and following Muirs' long long legs was a true pleasure when her coat let them show. Creamy was so mesmerised, he hardly noticed she had wondered into the main room where the big man had beaten Creamy so completely.

Creamy stopped dead in his tracks surprised to find he was too nervous to step out in case he was there, waiting to use his impressive martial skills again. It took a few breaths for Creamy to get his nerves under control; he was very glad it was dark because he could feel hot shame colouring his face. Being useless was not something Creamy relished on top of cowardice, so he tried to think of a way to be helpful.

“How are we going to play this once we are beyond this doorway BC? I think I may pass as the chap we took this suit off; well, at least until someone notices how tight is and I'm very good at mimicing voices”

Creamy thought back to the man that had seemed to enjoy taunting him more than the others and tried to copy him.

What. What. Wot do ya. What do you think? Close enough match for the bearded chap…umm, guy?” Enquired Creamy sounding very much like Vodan.
15 May 2021, 8:32pm
"Hmmm..." pondered JB "...I am getting a sudden urge to punch you."

JB stood next to Creamy and looked into the room. The strange little man in the big chair was still there tinkering away at the COVAS.

"The further we can go without bullets flying at us the happier I'll be so anything that'll get us past these goons the better. That little fucker over there seems to know your suit's previous owner well so I'd be careful." JB looked over to Ina, who looked more relaxed now she was back in possession of her rifle. JB also noticed that she seemed to have spotted something.

"Everything Ok, Muir?" he asked quietly.
15 May 2021, 10:40pm
Ina pointed towards loose airlock door, that was distinctively visible in the almost complete darkness of this big room. Light, coming from it and forming a smoothed rectangle shape, was warm and soft, more like nightlight, not usual utilitary-cold.

"I guess she might be there... Have to look. Cover me", whispered Ina and slowly walked towards this room, trying to stay behind busy technician man and the throne-chair that he occupied as long as she could, however, still pointing a rifle at him, until she passed by.

Ina opened the door a bit, still trying to be quiet, and slipped in, to see a young woman in a white coat who was sitting on a bed and reading something from her dataslate. Room was relatively small and quite spartan, almost giving Ina a flashback about her younger days: when she went away from her parents, that little cramped rooms was the most that she could afford, and yet she tried to make them cosy and comfortable, including having these warm nightlights on.

Hearing the sound of Ina's boots, woman quickly put her slate on a bed and stood up, without noticing who was in front of her, but then she looked at Ina and expressed somewhat that looked like a mix of fear, surprise and confusion. "Wha.. Who... Who are you?", she said with a quiet, trembling voice, slowly stepping backwards until she pressed to the wall. There was something odd, unsettling in how she was looking. She was slender, perhaps too much, and shorter than Ina, but the first thing that caught Ina's eyes was... the sight of a completely lost and exhausted person.

"Umm... Everything is okay. Don't be afraid", Ina answered quietly and lowered the rifle, looking into woman's eyes, and then added, saying on comms, "Come here. Looks like I found her".

“I hope you right” whispered Creamy as Muir crept away.

Getting away without shots fired would be perfect and maybe if the chap Creamy was doing an impression of was an important figure, the chances of that had just increased. Watching Muir keep her large weapon pointed at the big chair was worrying but at least the man in the chair was not the big man. Giving the man bathing in the glow of screens something else to draw his eye may help. Creamy gave JB a quick thumbs up and shut his suit's faceplate after checking he was on an open channel, then he wondered out making no effort to keep quiet. It was time to test his voice on someone that knew the man it belonged to.

“Hows it goin?” asked Creamy in Vodans’ voice when he got to the chair.

Dyson looked up and saw his face reflected in a helmet. “Why ya got your lid on Dan?”

“I was getting a bit of a headache so I changed my mix?”

“Right yeah. Still hacker stuff boss nothing you would be interested in”

Creamy slouched against the big chair and looked around the room as JB decided what he was going to do. Looking up, Creamy saw two men leaning up against the exterior wall on a catwalk above.

“Whose up there.. .buddy?” asked Creamy hoping to get a list of names so he’d know how many armed guards were above them.

“I don’t fucking know, you did the duty rosters” snapped Dyson getting annoyed that he wasn’t left alone to work. “Are you gonna get those ass holes off the station or bust my ass all night?”

The exchange has drawn the attention of the people above the room; it was better than them noticing a tall woman sneaking further into the darkness. After flipping off the man in the chair, it felt like a raiderish thing to do, Creamy left the man to it.
