Elite roleplay: Off station

OFF STATION

Your ship, deep space, anything that is not happening inside the Citi Gateway or Ingaba...

General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

The sounds of multicannon fire and packhound missiles - or, rather, the computer-generated sound effects of the weaponry - fill the bridge. Veronica looks on as the salvos impact with their target. She wrinkles her nose and shakes her head.

"Funny way to open a data cache, innit? I wonder what was goin' through their minds when they were designin' it?"

Veronica lowers her voice as far as she can, speaking in guttural tones.

"'Shall we put a big sign on it, saying 'knock three times'?' 'No. We will make them shoot at it.' Aliens, eh?"

Thade watched the men on the monitor fan out from the dark Dolphin.
“Didn’t we have an agreement with these guys to be left alone for two weeks?” he asked rhetorically. “We’ve already had one group of ass holes come for an inspection and now this bunch of shit heads”

The man he was talking to just shrugged knowing full well Thade didn’t want to talk about it. Keying into the channel used by the new visitors, Thade cleared his throat and flicked on the warning lights as the little station's two anti-ship turrets turned to face the Dolphin.

“The person in charge of this dump isn’t in the mood to talk to you as per our agreement” Turning on the 10 seconds to clear the pad warning had the desired effect. “If you have a problem with my treatment of your august personage, please feel free to tell your direct superior, and he will tell my direct superior, those respected men will doubtless punish the appropriate party”

The last of the men were scrambling up the boarding ramp as the Dolphin took off. After a short while, it pointed its nose at the sky and boosted as the three patrol vessels escorted it out of the little outposts' air space.

Ina had to leave Vodan's coat, offered by Creamy, in the room - no way she could put it on without unattaching spare magazines from her arms, there's no time for any weird fashion experiments and changing the plan, and it was too big for Jacqueline anyway.

"Okay", she said to Jacqueline, "You go first, I'll be right behind you. Like a guard. Let them think that I'm on their side. Try to look, ummm... confused and anxious. And walk fast. Don't worry, I won't be lagging behind. We'll leave this room, getting used to our disguise, while guys cover us, and then we'll do everything as planned."

"Dammit. She's already confused and anxious."

"And... Take everything of any value for you. We won't be returning back."

Jacqueline took something from her metal box, held it in both hands close to her chest and then put it into a pocket. Ina even allowed herself to smile, she knew too well how these little things can help you when everything around you turns into hell, being that 'last straw' to remain sane and yourself. JB and Creamy left the room first, and both women waited for a few seconds before moving out. Ina nodded to Jacqueline, and she went through the door too, heading into the dark hall. "Let's get out of here", Ina said quietly as Jacqueline passed by, tinted out her helmet glass and followed.

"Let's just hope everything will turn out well... It's almost fire at will now, I can start tearing them down right at this moment, but Jacqueline... I can't let them harm her anymore."

Both women were halfway to the control room ladder, when firefight in the dark hall started. Good that airlock door was quite heavy and noise of metal containers being dragged across the metal floor was loud enough to mask the gunfire for a bit of time. But listening to the comms, Ina realised that not just their cover was broken, but all the place could be alerted at any second, leaving them surrounded in the middle of it. Now she had to improvise somehow, without a chance and a time to tell it to Jacqueline. However, their 'escort' play seemed pretty plausible, locals that had seen them wasn't showing any signs of surprise or suspicion, and Ina was looking carefully at what was happening around them, trying not to miss any slightest sign of danger.

"Jacqueline... We have to go faster a bit. I don't know how long our cover would work", she said, coming closer to Jacqueline to keep herself from talking too loud. They successfully crossed the main storage area, noticing that troops there started acting odd, like trying to hear something.

"Phah... It's good that their bosses were too greedy to equip every goon with comms device."

Women climbed the ladder and now were standing on a little metal pad right before the control booth door, and Ina saw that troops were slowly gathering together, some of them were pointing at the airlock door, leading to the dark hall. Jacqueline was staring at the door comms panel and her returning hand tremor began to be quite noticeable.

"Remember, please... I'm on your side".

One by one, the exposed Guardian weak points are annihilated with multicannon and missilefire, the Misadventure maneuvering around them in a tight circle.

As he flies from one point to the next, Michael shrugs, a slight smile lifting one side of his mouth.

"Yeah. Aliens. Near as anyone can tell, we're forcing some kind of emergency system. But the real show is just... about... to start."

The final node is destroyed and Ridge pulls back on the throttle. The Misadventure flies in reverse, the structure splitting into massive, separate parts, massive arcs of power crackling between them. Michael glanced over his shoulder. Katie's eyes are firmly affixed to the changing alien megastructure.

Meowers

Both women climbed the ladder and now were standing on a little pad right before the control booth door, and Ina saw that troops were slowly gathering together, some of them were pointing at the airlock door, leading to the dark hall. Jacqueline was staring at the door comms panel and her returning hand tremor began to be quite noticeable.

"Remember, please... I'm on your side".

Slamming his hand on the airlock, Creamy got ready to bolt outside and try his luck in the low gravity, maybe hide on the roof until things had calmed down. The inner door opened and Creamy ducked inside pressing himself against the wall to stay out of the line of fire.

Glancing back he saw JB dealing with two of the shooters and a figure that made his blood run cold. Just as JB was launching himself across the catwalks, the big man that had beat Creamy to a pulp was launching himself at JB. Another Electric bolt smashed by Creamys’ face, he took hold of the door frame and pushed himself back into the big room, with a bounding step he catapulted himself into the air, flipping so he was traveling foot first at Vengerfiled.

He saw JB register Creamy pass underneath him while they flew by each other before Vodans’ boot connected firmly with Vengerfields’ jaw causing the man to grunt more out of surprise than pain. Creamy didn’t stop hitting Vengerfield on the way to the ceiling putting them three stories above ground level.

Vengerfield was just waiting for solid contact with something before he fort back; once his boots hit the ceiling and mag-locked, Vengerfield caught Creamy by the head, slammed him into the ceiling a few times, and with a mighty effort slung him at the floor below before launching himself after the Imperial lord. He would try not to kill him, but Vengerfield intended to crush whatever part of the man’s body he landed on.

"Very pretty, that," says Veronica in a nonchalant tone. "So, 'ow long do we 'ave to wait before-"

She is interrupted by a sudden beep from her dashboard. Information begins to scroll across the holographic display.

"Not long at all, apparently," she says in answer to her own unfinished question. "We've got a data stream coming in from the beacon. It's a set of coordinates."

Veronica looks across to where Ridge is sitting.

"Right then, all we 'ave to do now is go an' pick up these alien relics, yeah? Then we can 'ead back to Inara, you can sell your trinkets, I can take my forty percent cut, an' we can both be on our merry ways."
18 May 2021, 11:05pm
"Not quite. There's still one more thing to be done."

The Beacons opens itself before them, brilliant white light shining from its center, a tiny object emerging. Michael points to it.

"That's it. That's what we're here for."

A Guardian Key, millions of years old, presents itself for Ridge to scoop up. The man gentle nudges the throttle forward, his eyes on the prize.

18 May 2021, 11:09pm
The Fer de Lance exists supercruise, dwarfed by the great structure. The man within notes with satisfaction that a particular Krait Mk II is still in the vicinity.

Thrusters flare and hard points deploy. Elegance and death bears down upon the Misadventure.
19 May 2021, 8:24am
"A Guardian Key," mutters Veronica. "You ain't after trinkets at all. It's the blueprints you've come for. An' my role in this suddenly becomes crystal. When were you gunna get around to tellin' me about the sentinels that guard these places, then? Or was that gunna be kept as a nice surprise, eh? What else 'ave yer not-"

A beep from Veronica's dashboard cuts her short. She looks at her sensor array, and frowns.

"Looks like we've got company, 'eadin' straight for us. An' some'ow I don't think he's gunna knock three times..."
19 May 2021, 10:25am
Michael glances to his side, the Guardian Key still approaching.

"The plan... the plan was for both."

The Fed de Lance resolves itself it in the sensors, the identity of its pilot now known. Ridge's features harden.

"But things just got interesting. Buckle in, Katie. Change of plan!"

Michael accelerates, closing the gap between the Krait and the Key, the man muttering under his breath.

"Thought I had more time..."
19 May 2021, 11:56am
Veronica feels herself being pushed back in her seat as the Misadventure rapidly picks up speed. She gasps in disbelief as she realises they are still moving towards the Guardian Key.

"Ridge, leave the bleedin' key an' get us out of 'ere! That's a Fer de Lance out there, an' they usually mean only one thing. Especially when they deploy their ruddy 'ardpoints!"

Veronica stares at the Fer de Lance's sensor signal, then looks up to see the Guardian Key is still dead ahead.

"He'll be within firin' range any second, if he ain't already. You'll 'ave to slow right down to scoop that thing, an' then we'll be ruddy sittin' ducks. Go to high wake, now!"

The Misadventure maintains its course towards the ancient alien device, now tantalisingly close...

"Commander Ridge!"
19 May 2021, 2:02pm
The Hunter deployed his hard points, closing the distance between his Fer de Lance and the Krait. Even with its hastened approach to the key, it remains an easy target.

A bevy of five plasma accelerators, engineered for maximum damage, aligns with the Misadventure with inhuman precision. Moments later, it is in range.

The Hunter squeezes the trigger.
19 May 2021, 2:08pm
The impact jostles both man and woman in their seats, the Krait knocked off course, scraping the surface of the ancient Beacon. Michael wrestles with the controls, one eye on his shields, significantly damaged from a single salvo.

"Dammit!"

He shoves the throttle forward, diverting power to engines and shields, thrusters flaring as the Misadventure rockets forward. He glances over his shoulder at Katie, urgency in his tone.

"I'll shake him as long as I can. Plot a course out of here. Now!"
19 May 2021, 3:18pm
"On it."

Not wasting even a fraction of a second, Veronica calls up the navcom and selects the furthest reachable system on the list. Her task is made more difficult due to Ridge's evasive maneouvres, as she is buffeted from side to side in her chair.

"Jump plotted," she calls out. "Go! I'll 'ave another one ready for when we drop down. I 'ope yer FSD cools down quick!"

Creamy Goodness III

Vengerfield was just waiting for solid contact with something before her fort back; once his boots hit the ceiling and mag-locked, Vengerfield caught Creamy by the head, slammed him into the ceiling a few times, and with a mighty effort slung him at the floor below before launching himself after the Imperial lord. He would try not to kill him, but Vengerfield intended to crush whatever part of the man’s body he landed on.

JB looked on helplessly as the huge new guy fought with Creamy on the ceiling of The Big Room.

JB noticed that the guards had stopped firing. Whoever the big guy was, the guards seemed to know the protocol was to not fire whilst he's taking care of business. It didn't take much for JB to realise that this was the boss that The Guide had not wanted to wake.

Creamy and his assailant were fighting too closely for JB to risk a shot. After a few heavy hits the Big Guy speared Creamy towards the floor, then launched himself down at Creamy, boots first.

After weighing up his options, JB sprinted towards Creamy. He dropped down and slid across the floor, grabbing Creamy as he passed. The Big Guy's boots narrowly missed his target... sending a booming metallic thud throughout the room.

JB stood up. The Big Guy was staring at him, no expression to betray his emotions. The Big Guy just clenched his fists several times as he measured JB up.

JB's pistol lay on the floor, it was probably for the best as their boss' presence was the only thing stopping the remaining two goons from shooting them.

JB mirrored The Big Guy by clenching his fists and manoeuvring slowly towards his adversary, slightly side on and left-hand leading. Still emotionless, The Big Guy reciprocated, with his hands slightly opening in a more martial arts style. They started to slowly circle each other, getting slightly closer as they did so.

With the guard's on standby, JB intended to detain The Big Guy long enough for Creamy to get his breath back.

Quickly, JB snapped a left handed jab at The Big Guy's face... with a slight lean from the shoulders the punch missed its target.

They continued their clockwise motion...

JB jabbed again, another straight left arm pointed at The Big Guy's face. He'd obviously guessed that JB was testing the water and leant backwards from the non-committal shot, slapping the back of JB's fist, to prove a point, as he was retracting it.

They continued to circle...

As JB went for a third jab, The Big Guy took the bait and attempted to grab JB's fist. Making a quick diagonal step to The Big Guy's left side, JB threw two quick right hooks to his opponent's kidneys, he pushed Big Guy's shoulder with his left hand and landed a hefty blow to his ribs as JB quickly stepped back to his original distance... narrowly avoiding a huge backhand as it whistled past the front of his helmet.

The Big Guy was still unfazed. JB was impressed... he didn't even see him flinch.

The dance continued...

This time The Big Guy took the initiative with several fast body shots of his own. JB knew the guy was fast so there was no point in trying to dodge the punches, some times you just have to tense your muscles and soak them up.

Even though these were just a few exploratory digs to gauge his adversary, JB could feel the power as the heavy duster did little to muffle the blows. After the flurry both opponents stepped away, not wanting to give the other the chance to launch a counter.

It seemed to JB that the big guy was toying with him... but this suited JB. So long as nobody was firing at Creamy it was just giving Ina more time to get the sabotage started.

JB already knew that the guards didn't have night vision as they'd attached torches to their guns, and the big guy wasn't wearing a helmet. He looked past The Big Guy towards the door that led into the warehouse they came through earlier.

"Muir," JB panted into his comms, "Any time you want to blackout the main hall it'd be appreciated."

They continued to circle...
