Elite roleplay: Off station

OFF STATION

Your ship, deep space, anything that is not happening inside the Citi Gateway or Ingaba...

General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

Michael curses at seeing the new icon on the scanner. Even absent verification, it could only be one person. He spins to Katie.

"Time to move!"

Background humming of power generator became a bit louder, which meant that lighting subsystem almost finished its reboot and soon lights would be on again.

"This is your end", Ina used the station announcement mic once again, speaking with mesmerizing calm voice.

JB deserved an explanation, but it had to be quick before the boss man got back to his feet and came for revenge.

“It’s my covas. If they hack it, very bad” he said while he played with the suits' settings looking for a light.

Thinking back, Creamy tried to imagine when he would have dropped Ninette. He remembered grabbing this very door frame to give himself an extra boost when he launched at the big threat. That was it, he must of let go of Ninette as he flipped around mid-air. Taking a breath, Creamy peered out and turned on the helmet light.

A quick scan of the floor didn’t revile Ninette, but it did draw fire forcing Creamy to duck back. Pushing himself to his feet, Creamy looked over to JB, he didn’t look pleased and Creamys’ friendly smile with a reassuring thumbs up didn’t seem to help. He peered out again.

There, on the catwalk to the left. Creamy could see Ninette, and then saw nothing as a shot took the light on his helmet out causing Creamys’ head to snap back hard.

“Argh! Bloody hell” escaped as Creamy was forced back into cover.

“I see it that man” said Creamy doing his best to ignore the ringing in his skull “Can you lay out some covering fire while I do a bit of low-gee acrobatics?”

The longer this rescue took the more likely things could go wrong. This rescue had already taken too long... and things had already gone very very wrong. JB reasoned it was better to help Creamy try and get the Covas rather than say "no" and have the bugger run off and do it anyway.

"Quick then!" JB called over the noise of the gun shots that hit around the doorframe, "Just don't get shot, you'll fuck up my bonus!" JB re-tinted his visor, leant around the corner and fired towards the lights being shone from the balcony.

Veronica glances at the scanner and spots the new ship icon immediately.

"Shit!"

There is a sudden hectic flurry of activity as Ridge and Veronica dash back to their stations.

"We'd 'ave been long gone by now," she calls out as she practically hurls herself into her seat, "if you hadn't faffed around gettin' me to look at ruddy maps an' manifests! It's almost as if you wanted that bloke to catch up with us! So much for your little 'You really think I don't know all that?' speech!"

Even as she is in mid-rant, Veronica's fingers are flying across her navcom interface.

"Course locked in! Hit it!"

The Misadventure inks into hyperspace moments before the Fer de Lance would have achieved interdiction angle. In the cloudy funnel of witchspace, Michael shook his head.

"We can't outrun this one, Katie. We can only put him down. But I need you to trust me."

[warning: disturbing, highly violent content]

Some of the lights in the main storage area were already flickering, trying to turn on despite the total lack of maintenance and incoming power surges from worn generator. The picture of violent massacre emerged from the darkness: an area near the center, slightly closer to the airlock door, was turned into a pool of blood. A dozen of disfigured, mutilated bodies, torn limbs and flesh were laying on a metal floor, full of holes with ragged edges. Some of the wounded were still screaming with hoarse voices, some of them already died. Bloody trails were following a few crippled grunts who tried to crawl away, almost all of them were dead too, only one still tried to move his tattered body, pressing what was left of his arms against the floor. A pair of the old cargo containers were broken too, turned into a weird constructions made of twisted and jagged metal.

"Jacqueline. How are you there?", Ina asked in a short moment of silence, aiming at the edge of a container, which was used as a cover.

"F...Fine...It's strange, but...I'm fine". Jacqueline was sitting on the floor, staring at Ina, almost ignoring the gunfire sounds, they were like some distant background. Happening somewhere 'there', far away from her. Or... everything that was happening here and now wasn't happening with her? Her body was here, but her mind was struggling to process so much disturbing things. As much as she wanted to escape, she was afraid of this noise and stress, which were actually affecting her at the moment. Like it was... too much. There was an intense arguing within her: one part of her wished death to all of her captors, but another was telling that this was unnecessary. She thought that she was already lost, broken, tainted, she wasn't herself anymore, her escape wasn't worth so much pain and violence inflicted even to the criminals.

"I giving 'em hell! Really."

"Ummm... T...Thank you."

"Hold on a bit more, please", Ina replied and pulled a trigger again, and another scream of pain sounded somewhere below the control room.

Lights were slowly turning on one by one...

"You need me to... "

Veronica stares at Ridge for a long moment, then lets out a loud, humourless laugh.

"Oh, I knew it! I ruddy knew it! This 'as just been a scam all along! You an' Ferdie out there are a pair of grifters, an' I'm yer mark! I knew you were dodgy the moment I clapped eyes on yer. You made the approach an' the offer, then your pal turns up to work the hurrah. Well, I ain't fallin' for it, mate. I ain't got the foggiest why you pegged me, but if you think yer gunna get anything out of me, you can think again! So you can just tell yer partner to sod off, then turn this boat around an' take me back to Citi Gateway. Now!"
20 May 2021, 4:10pm
Michael again activates the frameshift drive, one jump of several closer to his destination.

"Lady," he growls, "you couldn't be more wrong. This isn't even about credits anymore. It's about survival. For us both."

The hyperdrive spools again. There is the briefest flash of a contact on them before space trembles and distorts around them.

There was no time for flair, Creamy had to get the covas and get out. If it wasn't for the dark, they would be easy targets. Trying to avoid looking directly at someone's torch beam, Creamy broke cover as soon as JB opened fire.

He jumped to the underside of the catwalk and swung his boots into the walkway under the covas witch then lifted off gently into the air. Not wishing to be shot, Creamy took a few long strides, grabbed hold of the catwalk, and forced himself up over the railing to catch Ninette mid-air as stun shells whistled by dangerously close.

This was the tricky bit, Creamy carried on drifting towards the far wall and held the usually heavy and well-armoured ‘Black Box’ at the closest gunmen like a shield. If it could survive a ship exploding around it, Creamy reasoned a few stun bolts wouldn’t hurt her.

As his feet made contact with the wall, the lights started coming back on. In the strobing of big lighting arrays above finding power, Creamy saw plenty of guys coming along the upper floors heading for the atrium. Whats’ more, he saw the big man picking himself up while he spat out what Creamy suspected were broken teeth.
Jumping at the far wall that faced the airlock, Creamy got ready to b-line out of this place. With a powerful leap from his strong legs, Creamy jumped straight at the airlock turning to hold the covas up to curl behind as he sailed back to the ground.

“Open the outer door that man” yelled Creamy over the sound of JB and Vengerfields men exchanging fire as electric explosions cracked off Ninette.

If he got the timing right, he’d get through the inner door just before it closed.

"All right," says Veronica, sounding unconvinced. "So it's about survival. But what is 'it', exactly? What 'ave you got me into? I'm 'earin' you spoutin' a lot of words an' sayin' not very much that makes any sense.

She glances at the navcom on her holo-dashboard.

"Some straight answers would be nice, Ridge. You can start by tellin' me where the ruddy 'ell you're takin' me."
20 May 2021, 6:02pm
Michael scowls, weighing what he should and shouldn't tell Katie.

"We're heading to a Thargoid structure. A big one. Active."

He glances over his shoulder, his eyes meeting hers, his features earnest.

"And what do you know about AI?"

JB kept one eye on Creamy as he grabbed his COVAS whilst JB himself was busy swapping fire with the guards. He was tempted to put a couple of bullets in the big fucker that he'd sparred with, but his priorities had to be anyone with guns.

The lights started to flicker on, sporadically lighting new guards rushing down some of the higher stairs. With the brighter lights coming on, JB found the black silhouettes of the guard's a much easier target.

As Creamy dropped down with his COVAS in hand, JB took his chance to take out the two closest guards as they turned their attention to Creamy. JB brought his left hand up to steady his shot and squeezed the trigger. The bullet hit the guard in the face, making his helmet pop off from the bullet going straight through and hitting the inside. The shot on the second guard wasn't as clean, it may've been the guard's throat... either way it was enough to take him out.

New guards started to file into place along the balcony as Creamy neared.

"Run, ya daft bastard!" JB yelled back as Creamy called for him to open the outer door. Just as Creamy neared, JB turned and hit the airlock's outer button, hoping he'd judged Creamy's speed close enough that the Lordling would make it into the airlock in time.

"Artificial Intelligence? Comes in two flavours, dunnit. Banned an' Not-banned."

The Misadventure drops out of witchspace once again. Veronica instinctively checks her sensor display. The system is a close binary with no other astronomical features. There is no sign of any other vessels, either.

"I'm still waitin' for some proper answers. Tellin' me we're 'eadin' for a Thargoid structure ain't exactly fillin' in a lot of gaps. An' there are a lot of gaps. You asked me to trust you, remember? So give me a reason."
20 May 2021, 7:44pm
Michael steers the Misadventure at superluminal speeds between the pair of stars. He, too, is keeping an eye on fuel levels and the scanner.

"Awhile ago I did a job that put me face to face with the real thing. Not a busted-up relic. Not some clever interface. Real, actual, kill-all-humans AI from way back in the day."

The low rumble of fuel harvesting tapers off. Michael hits the frameshift drive, riding the razor's edge of swift jumping and barely avoiding dangerous reactor temperatures. The shadows rotate like clock hands as the twin stars recede into the distance behind them.

"And not only are they damn near impossible to kill, but hold one hell of a grudge if you try."

Veronica listens to Ridge with a look of mounting incredulity on her face.

"But I suppose you managed to kill it, though, eh? With nothin' but yer bare 'ands, I'll bet. An' as a reward they made you king of the galaxy, then you married the princess an' lived 'appy ever after. Please, Ridge, don't insult my intelligence. I asked you for answers, not the plot of the last bleedin' holo-sim you played. I mean, bloody 'ell..."

With a sigh, Veronica turns her head and gazes out of her canopy at the stars beyond.
