Elite roleplay: Off station

OFF STATION

Your ship, deep space, anything that is not happening inside the Citi Gateway or Ingaba...

General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

JB Threepwood"Run, ya daft bastard!" JB yelled back as Creamy called for him to open the outer door. Just as Creamy neared, JB turned and hit the airlock's outer button, hoping he'd judged Creamy's speed close enough that the Lordling would make it into the airlock in time.

Lights turned on finally, and opponents tried to concentrate their return fire on the control room's window. However, it was a handful of them left, five or six from Ina's point of view, and lack of tactics knowledge and communications was seriously letting them down. Not to mention lack of morale after the first strike. They even tried to mount something that looked like an organised counterattack, but one who was covering them was too afraid to expose himself for too long, making this 'cover' completely useless. So attack was rapidly repelled by a long burst at the direction of the advancing forces. First two runners were almost instantly killed in none less brutal way, spilling their blood all over the neighbouring cargo container and their companions' suits, other grunts stopped their advance and quickly took cover behind anything that looked durable enough.

Ammo counter turned yellow and Ina pulled a trigger, aiming at the edge of container with enemy troops behind it, to keep them suppressed a bit more, before swapping the magazine.

"JB, how are you there?", Ina asked via comms, "I'm good. Five mags left. Lots of kills."

Bandits were scattered and pinned down to the stacked containers, as it was the only reliable cover. They were trying to shoot back, peeking quickly and firing at 'somewhere near the target', leaving random scorch marks around the window, having no time to aim, as return fire was sending them back to cover, and nobody wanted to end up like those who were killed first.

Single containers were a death trap. One of the bandits tried to rejoin the group of three others, jumped from his cover and took a position behind a container that was halfway. Ina reacted instantly, sending a short burst at the human figure that appeared mid-air, but he was too fast and rounds just hit the floor behind him. It was continued by a longer burst at the container, rounds were piercing and ripping it, and Ina stopped firing only when she saw a blood splatters on the floor behind the damaged container.

"Hold on a bit more", she said to Jacqueline, "I'm almost done here. Waiting for JB and Creamy."

"Just don't tell me that he really ran away while I was having fun here."

Michael focuses dead ahead, his temper rising. Again, he raises his voice as he glances behind him.

"Does it look dead, wise ass?"

He turns back, engaging the frameshift yet again.

"Look... it's a lot to explain. And it's a lot to ask you to believe. It's like, I dunno..."

The Misadventure jumps, the eerie clouds of witchspace rushing by them.

"Like how talk of Thargoids sounded ten years ago."

Veronica takes her gaze away from the swirling witchspace vortex and looks across at Ridge.

"No, wait a minute, never mind the ruddy Thargoids. Are you seriously tryin' to tell me that the bloke in the Ferdie is an AI? An actual sentient android? An' he's after you because you pissed him off? Is that it? Listen, mate, I've 'eard some whoppers in my time, but that takes the bleedin' biscuit. Rogue androids like that are nothin' more than rumours!"

She closes her eyes and wrinkles her nose.

"Blimey. Righto then, let's s'pose I buy your story. I ain't saying I do, mind, but let's just suppose. You say it's a lot to explain. So okay, I'm listenin'."

Veronica opens her eyes and stares expectantly at Ridge.

"Off you go."

Another hyperspace jump. Another scowl from Michael.

"Awhile ago I got caught trying to scav a Prismatic generator in Mu Koji. Ended up being given a choice: the mines of Laedla or dirty work for the Inquisition."

He glances behind himself, his eyes meeting Katie's.

"So I made my choice. Went down the rabbit hole. Leaned some things that I shouldn't have."

Michael's features harden.

"That thing that's following us isn't the AI. Not exactly, anyway. The real core of the AI..."

His thumb jerks over his shoulder.

"... is in the cargo hold."

Stopping was not easy even with proper heave duty mag-boots. The weight of, or rather the mass of Ninette carried Creamy well into the little air lock and didn’t let him stop there. He was only stopped by the door on the other side that was yet to open. Naturally, it opened moments after Creamy had face planted into it; he just hoped JB was too busy being a gunman to laugh.

This was all too familiar. Tight clothes, running for his life, and painkillers wearing off reminding Creamy the heroes from the holos had stunt doubles and get a bit of a sit down after a testing scene. If he stopped, he wouldn’t want to get up again, so Creamy ran out into the cold grey light of the moon he was on. The freezing temperature and depth of an endless sky after being in a box for so long was breathtaking to him. He didn’t have long to appreciate the beauty of the nearby Gas giant backlit by the systems stars and instead looked for somewhere to take cover.

After looking left and right Creamy made a choice. He saw the back end of an SRV and ran to it at once. When he got into the garage-like building the SRV was in, he could see there were two buggies. One was missing dorsal thrusters and the turrets, and the other lacked a wheel on each side.

“Well I tend to fly the things most the time anyway and I do feel a big gun would help right now”

Getting into the driver’s seat Creamy set about starting up the SRV.. .. and then looked to see if JB had followed him. They didn’t get around to sorting out coms back in Jacquelines’ room.

"I'll assume that you ain't referrin' to the beer."

Veronica drums her fingers on her thigh.

"Carry on."

"The mission was an experiment. See how the AI reacts to being around native Guardian tech. Time was always short, especially if one of its lackeys picks up my trail."

He chuckles to himself, low and bitter.

"You didn't think it was odd that some stranger was in such a hurry to gather those artifacts? Willing to shell out forty percent to a damn driver?"

Creamy Goodness III
Getting into the driver’s seat Creamy set about starting up the SRV.. .. and then looked to see if JB had followed him. They didn’t get around to sorting out coms back in Jacquelines’ room.

There was a heavy barrage of shots that hit against the inner airlock door as the outer one opened. The heat disappeared out into the black with the rest of the air. Even with clothes and a duster over his Remlock, JB could still feel the bite. Wanting to slow down his pursuers, JB once again took the butt of his pistol and smashed the control panels.

JB turned to make sure Creamy was still around... but small, swirling eddies of dust were all he could see outside of the outpost. JB followed the cloudy footsteps to a nearby outbuilding. He peered around the corner to see Creamy sat in a rather battered SRV.

JB tapped the side of his helmet beside his right ear and signaled "Oh...one...three" with one hand, hoping that Creamy would know to tune into that comm channel.

He knew that Creamy didn't want to leave the slave doctor behind, and JB had no intention of leaving Ina behind, so he hopped onto the rear turret of the SRV and waited for Creamy to tune in. As he got into the raised seat he spoke through his own Comms to Ina;
"Muir, how're you getting on with that extra Remlock?"

Veronica shrugs.

"It 'ad nothin' to do with me, mate. Does now, though, dunnit. Besides, you told me you were fetchin' trinkets for a buyer on Citi Gateway. For all I knew, you could've just been in an 'urry to meet their deadline."

The Misadventure drops out of witchspace once again. Veronica checks her sensors.

"All clear," she says. "So let me see if I've got this straight. You've acquired some sort of sentient AI tech, with the plan bein' to take it to a Guardian structure so you can see 'ow it behaves. To do that you 'ad to get a key from a Guardian beacon. Only you couldn't scoop the key on account of the fact you were bein' shot at by some bloke wantin' the AI tech back. Seems to me like the job's a bust, innit? Or am I missin' somethin'?"
21 May 2021, 3:58pm
Bitterness creeps across Ridge's face.

"Yeah, it's a bust. And we're defaulting to containment protocol. My associates don't mess around when an AI has broken control. That's why we're heading to a Thargoid hive."

He steers the Misadventure in a long, lazy loop around the star, the rumble of stellar hydrogen being scooped filling the canopy.

"And even then, it might not work. Especially if this guy brings... friends."
21 May 2021, 4:31pm
"Let's 'ope he prefers to work alone, then, eh?"

Veronica double checks her sensors.

"Still clear. Tell me about these associates of yours, Ridge. Who are they? What are they doin' messin' around with illegal AI? Exactly 'ow did they get 'old of it in the first place? An' pr'aps even more importantly, why ain't we makin' a beeline for your associates instead of 'eadin' for a ruddy Thargoid 'ive?"
21 May 2021, 4:53pm
Ridge scoffs.

"You think they just hand me a holodoc of all their deep, dark secrets? Let me look at their identicards? I'm just the field help. Suffice to say that once they've sunk their hooks into you, they stay sunk."

Another jump. Another witchspace tunnel. Ridge allows his gaze into the distance for just a moment.

"They would call themselves freedom fighters. Those in charge would call them criminals. Your everyday Jill would call them wackjobs."

He closes his eyes, just for a moment.

"But whatever they are, it won't do any good to drag this thing right to their doorstep for them to reason with. That's been tried before. It... failed."

JB Threepwood"Muir, how're you getting on with that extra Remlock?"

"That bastard had a cyberleg. Damn. We have to leave the controls to get the bottom part", replied Ina, keeping her rifle aimed at the edge of the container. Remaining handful of bandits were still trying to shoot at her, however, they were too scared to expose themselves for too long to aim properly. And to be shot too. So it was rather a lazy shootout at this moment.

"Give me a signal when you're ready. Because we'll not be able to return to this position since we go. And where are you?"
21 May 2021, 6:05pm
"I bet you're wishin' you'd chosen the mines now."

Veronica frowns, then shakes her head and sighs.

"All right, so what's the plan for when we get to where we're goin'?"

Picking himself up, Vengerfield evaluated just how important Creamys’ information was to him. Killing the man would feel very good right now. Closing his helmet, Vengerfiled pressed the open button. The airlock didn’t open so Vengerfield braced himself with one foot on the wall and forced the door to retract. The outer door didn’t give no matter how hard he pulled thanks to the pressure difference.

“I want that door destroyed” he said calmly, his words buzzing with suppressed rage.

Looking over his men, there weren’t as many as there should be and the dead and injured didn’t account for the missing people, it must have something to with the exchange happening deeper into the complex.

After unloading the stun shells, everyone found something to hold onto and unloaded on the outer door. It didn’t take many shots for the pressure to assist in blowing out. Vengerfield kicked out what was left and stepped out just in time to see an SRV flick out of the garage with Creamy at the controls.
