Elite roleplay: Off station

OFF STATION

Your ship, deep space, anything that is not happening inside the Citi Gateway or Ingaba...

General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

Descartes"S.O.S. Pirates have engaged our Transport. Shields are down, FSD is malfunctioning. We have women and children onboard. I repeat women and children are onboard. Please help.
message will repeat.... S.O.S....."

"WHAT THE !!" I shouted, as my survival mask flipped into place over my head. Stopped carrying weapons on most of my ships a long time ago.

Yanking the kevlar harness tight and gripping the stick I tried to point the lasers in the right direction as Sam dived, pulled up and banked the ASP - not the most agile fighting machine. At last they locked on target. I fired, keeping an eye on power to the weapons.

This was not me. I avoided danger like a plague. Boost away and jump out, that's me. But those people on the transport couldn't be left. Let's hope help arrives. let's hope the pirates take the cargo and run. Better to lose the cargo than a life.

"Just distract them, lure them away." I screamed, probably in vain.

Sam sounded murderous. One of the vipers yawed towards us, we were hopelessly outnumbered. The lasers stopped turning into plasma clouds when hitting the Cobra, it's shields were down, Sam had a chance - hit him hard with something, encourage him to break off the attack. It worked, at least temporarily, maybe he was only re-charging his shields.

"Ha, this pilot's a sorry excuse for a pirate. All three have active kill warrants. If we can lets take them all out" Sam boosted towards the cobra, who after being pummeled with multicannons began to attempt a back flip boost to quickly turn back on Sam and Descartes in the Asp explorer.

"All energy to systems and engines! We're ending this one and then that Viper is gonna get a taste."

Sam boosted again at the cobra while firing the multicannons and right as the ship exploded Sam boosted through the wreckage the shields taking a barrage of bits and pieces of shrapnel that was a Cobra pirate ship.

Shields offline The ships' A.I. announced.

"What? Why? That shouldn't hav--"

Suddenly the Asp explorer was hit with many beam lasers all at once. Both vipers who were attacking the transport had turned their attention on the Asp Explorer who just tore through one of their comrades.

"SHIT... I didn't think both would come knocking. Whatever, we'll be fine. Descartes let's focus the Viper with the neon green on it's hull. We'll be a bit slower with energy into the weapons and systems, but we've got to get the shields back online. I'll dump the shield cell bank when hull reads 50%. Focus your fire on that Viper and I'll take care of the rest."

Sam followed, as fast as one pip of energy in the engines could take him, towards the viper with the neon green paint on the hull as Descartes fired the lasers at it. Sam watching the Viper behind him pound laser fire into the rear of the ship, considerably weaker than he thought they would, thought to himself. The ship we're firing on must be the stronger one... Or this guy is waiting for something...Hull is at 50% go time

Sam wasted no time switching panels and dumping the shield cell bank. At first nothing, and then...

Shields online The Ships A.I. announced

"Great, here we go. Let me know when the shields are down and I'll put all but one pip into weapons and we'll hit him with everything."

Sam pitched and rolled dodging incoming laser fire while keeping the ship in range for Descartes to keep hammering the Viper with laser fire.

Rinehart slid his drink away from the crumpled piece of paper he had been nursing for the last 10 mins as he sat at the Docks bar, as grubby and unkept as the bar was, it had been his home on and off for the past 6 months, his ships owner had insisted he pay off the remaining few million credits the ship out at Robigo, he hated Robigo more and more each day, the passengers he picked up were at best the worst kind, and at worse the best kind, the latter being the quiet ones who looked like they would just as soon slit your throat as shake your hand, still it was a means to and end, or thats what he kept telling himself, "just a few more weeks" but at 10% of the take each day the weeks seemed to be turning into months, his eyes stared once more at the paper he held on the bar, his rough hands smoothing out the page once more to read the message, the bold and careful handwritten text he read , "meet me at red station, if you ever want to own that dam ship of yours", only one person in the whole of the galaxy he knew would write in that style, or even use paper, which is hard to come by these days, Martine! he knew Martine, maybe a little too well for his own good, , he nodded to himself as he re read the note , what she really meant was I want somthing ! and i need your help to get it , and as a side bet Ill get you your ship back for you, she never did anything that didn't gain her a edge or increase her credit balance, still, she was good for the cash , he knew that, and he was just about to throw the towel in doing the Robigo runs, he knew deep down that he would never pay back the credits he owed doing that, it was a scam and a bad one at that, this could be a chance for him to get what he wanted, his freedom.
He slid off the bar stood and finished the drink that had gotten weak and warm from the melted ice and the heat from his hands, grunted to himself and walked out into the bright lights of the dockyards port Authority walkways. , he turned and headed towards his ship, the Carnwennan was a beat up old Python, and had been his pride and joy until he had taken the loan on her to finance his big chance, the deal that would get him the credits he needed to turn her into the ship she deserved to be, which had of course had failed and left him in debut up to the brim of his dirty hat. never the less she was still a good ship, and would get him to the the red station, make or break this was going to be his last chance at getting back to his dream.

He strode through the ally's and passages of the port, not once lifting his to see where he was, he could have literally made the journey from Morrisons rest to dock 44 blindfold, "Morrisons rest" , yes that was the bars name, as cliché as it gets, but still held a kind of charm he couldn't ignore, He Glanced up at the tec that was tinkering with a piece of equipment by the dock door, and grunted as he had done countless times, they briefly made eye contact, that was the total extent of their exchange, and it crossed his mind that he probably had more of a relationship with that tec than he did with anyone else in this station, he pressed the button to summon the lift, "please let this be the last time i press that button" he mumbled to himself as he walked past the concave doors and stood in the centre of the floor, waiting for the doors to shut, he reached over and hit 44, that particular button seemed to have more than its fair share of muck welded to it, or maybe thats just the way he felt about it, either way he thought that it might! just might be the last time he would use it for a long long time.

the doors opened out onto the open space that was dock 44, sat in the middle of it was the only other thing on this backwater outpost he had a relationship with, his ship, he took a deep breath and felt the recycled and ionised gas that passed for clean air fill his lungs, as he walked the last few meters to his ship and pressed his hands onto the cold metal of her landing struts, showing a kind of familiarity that was usually reserved for somthing less mechanical in nature, he hit the hatch lift and waited for the squealing and slight metallic grind that would tell him the entry to his ship had succumbed to his summons, which it did with unerring repetition, he passed through the cargo bay and living quarters, the cockpit door which opened without any need for any button or switch, he had it bio locked and this door would only ever open to his patterns "that was his personal touch and loved that small mod, he had fitted it almost the second he had acquired her.

He ignored the various blinking lights and alarms that had been activated due to his presence on the bridge, and slid into his chair, allowing himself a brief moment of calm and peace he found only when commanding his own ship, for a moment he zoned out, the irritating buzzing of proximity alarms and engine throttle management systems fading into almost, but not quite silence until the aroma of stale coffee and scolded electrical insulation found its way into his daydream, breaking the fragile moment forever. time to fly he said to himself, leaning forward fingers danced over the navigation screen, muscle memory taking over as the desired course was selected on the nav panel which hung in mid air, its orange glow illuminating the chipped and pitted surface of the cockpit, HIP 10792 - Crimson exchange port, or as he always called it "the red station" he had first crossed paths with Martine there, somthing he both regretted and hoped to repeat in equal measure, she was a handful in in every meaning that phrase can be applied to, he paused for a second as his hand waved over the auto launch sequence, he knew this wasn't going to go smooth, nothing that involved her ever did, but he also knew it was a genuine chance, at lest legally have his name back on the papers, "fuck it" the ship juddered as the atmospheric seal was broken and the whole structure tracked its way forward then out into the surface of the station. he never thought of the vacuum of space as anything other than home, if Samuel Rienheart were to ever have anything close to a security blanket, this would be it, "space" here he was in charge, in control and he could stop looking over his shoulder, well at lest as far as the ships interior was concerned, and right now that was enough.

Dust motes lifted in unison with the landing struts as they lifted gently from the mooring platform ,then in almost the same moment succumbing to the superheated exhaust of the manoeuvring thrusters ending their wanderlust in a shower excited sparks, the ship lifted clear of surface, acceding to a safe distance from the platform before its rear thrusters burst into life giving the craft its forward momentum. leaving behind a graceful arch of vaper, revealing for those who understood drive mechanics that that particular vessel held a set of dirty drives, a modification who purpose was speed at all cost, they pushed the bulk of the python the away from the station in a slow constant speed , and then she was gone, disappearing into nothing but a distant bright ember in the black, as the engines were brought up to 100% leaving no trace unless you count a handful of unpaid bar bills of course

Veronica stares wide-eyed at the information on Ridge's wristcomm.

"Ohh, that ain't good. That ain't good at all."

She looks at Ridge.

"I s'pose, in 'indsight, what we should've done is go to a Thargoid structure in some other system, instead of comin' back 'ere. Bit late for that now, innit."

She picks up her carbine rifle and checks its readout, then straightens the grenade belt which hangs across her body. Finally she checks the readout on her own wristcomm.

"Right," she says, looking up at Ridge, "at the risk soundin' repetitive - which way?"

Michael closes out his wrist display, forcing himself to focus. He shines his light down the corridor.

"That way is closer to the center, so..."

More heavy footsteps, a multitude this time, echo down the space. They are coming from the gash in the structure's wall. Michael curses.

"Move!"

Meowers
"Jacqueline, Creamy, you can start whenever you both are ready... And I'll be remaining here. For... safety", she said it like an announcement, but looking straight into Jacqueline's eyes across the cabin.

It never took long to surface and there it was out in the open once more. JBs command for Creamy to join him in the cockpit was clear now. Creamy couldn’t be trusted to behave like a reasonable human being because he was an imperial, and JB had to keep an eye on him in case Creamy suddenly had the impulse to enslave someone.

He didn’t know why he was surprised to begin with; even while the company Creamy was currently working for had retooled all their liners to assist in rescuing the innocent people trapped on stations bombed by terrorists, the coms were full of people talking about how they deserved to die for the crime of being born in the empire. Creamy had worked until he couldn’t be trusted to fly safely to save lives, and there were still people outside the empire openly celebrating the deaths of men women, and children because of where they were born in the empire.

Here we was, freed from a week of captivity that not even zoo animals were expected to endure after being abducted, and a self-confessed remorseless mass-murderer somehow felt she had the moral high ground because Creamy was a member of the imperial aristocracy. A man that couldn’t be trusted to undergo a medical examination from a woman without a savage killer watching to assure Creamy didn’t try to take over the ship. The surprise had faded replaced by dejected acceptance of the usual prejudice.

An amiable attitude and penchant for politeness was hard enough for Creamy to maintain, it took effort just to stand with a straight back right now, so defending himself from the judgments was just too much; besides Jacqueline could do without more drama. Creamy was quite confident that the nurse was herself an imperial citizen judging by the distaste on her face after Muirs’ matter-of-fact judgment upon the empire.

The gratitude he had for the people that had freed him was gone replaced with an empty feeling. He had endured so Nerys and Amata didn’t have those raider people on their back, and somehow Creamy was still treated as the bad guy, well worse. He'd spent a week being treated like an animal and didn't intend to let it carry on anymore. With a barely audible sigh, Creamy made a choice.

He owned nothing at this very moment, just a tee-shirt, a pair of briefs, and a stolen pressure suit that didn’t fit. Still, he had a meal warming up and a cup of tea was on the horizon, so after a bit of a nap and a shower, Creamy could set about sorting his life out again. He just needed two more things.

“As you say Ms Muir” was all he had the energy to reply. Finding JB, Creamy asked for the second to last thing he would need from these people. “I'll not be troubling the young lady for an examination thank you. May I used the long-range communications, please?”

Following the direction indicated by Bridge, Veronica breaks into a loping, low-gravity assisted run.

"Whatcher mean, 'this way's closer to the centre'? D'yer not know where this chamber thing is? Do yer even know what it looks like?"

The two run along a twisting, organic corridor, the sound of footsteps behind them still audible but quieter. Rounding a bend, Veronica and Ridge are confronted with an eight-sided doorway. The door itself lies in several shattered pieces on the floor. A maintenance drone is busy repairing the door mechanism. The only way forward is through the doorway. Veronica takes a cautious step through, but the drone ignores her, intent on its alloted task. Veronica turns to Ridge and grins, then continues through the doorway.

On the other side, a few paces away from the maintenance drone, is a trolley on which are an assortment of tools and gadgets.
27 May 2021, 2:00pm
Inside is a chamber, massive and of the same insectoid design as the rest of the site. A raised structure sits in the middle, connected by long biomechanical tendrils to the walls. On the ceiling are dozens of bulbous eggs, dormant or unhatched.

Michael shines his light around.

"Not good."

The heavy footsteps from earlier can now be heard, advancing at a steady pace.biy is only a matter of moments before The Hunter and his entourage of horrors arrive.

Ridge grits his teeth at the noise.

"Very not good."
27 May 2021, 2:05pm
The Hunter walks, armed and armored, advancing upon his quarry. He hears the door, the Thargoid Scavenger tending to its repairs. A look of disdain crosses his features.

With a single, savage swipe, he knocks it to the ground with his fist. The drone crawls forward before dying beneath his boot.

The Hunter advances into the chamber, finally beholding his prey in person. For the first time, the speaks, his voice rich and baritone, something that would be pleasing were it not so cold.

"You have something that belongs to me."

Creamy Goodness III
He owned nothing at this very moment, just a tee-shirt, a pair of briefs, and a stolen pressure suit that didn’t fit. Still, he had a meal warming up and a cup of tea was on the horizon, so after a bit of a nap and a shower, Creamy could set about sorting his life out again. He just needed two more things.

“As you say Ms Muir” was all he had the energy to reply. Finding JB, Creamy asked for the second to last thing he would need from these people. “I'll not be troubling the young lady for an examination thank you. May I used the long-range communications, please?”

JB raised an eyebrow. Creamy had obviously taken a beating, it wasn't long ago that he was hooked up to a drip. JB put the top on the bottle and looked at the Lordling.

"Your call, mate," JB said as he walked around the small bar. "Come with me. You can use the system in Cabin 1 if you want some privacy, I'll patch it through from the cockpit. I'll use the time to sort out my squad mates."

JB walked out of Cabin 2, glad to be away from the awkward feeling that was brewing in there.

"Give is a shout if you need us," JB advised Creamy as he opened the cabin door. Rolling the tension out of his neck, JB walked through to the cockpit.
27 May 2021, 2:53pm
Veronica takes the quickest of glances at the felled maintenance drone.

"Ooh," she says with an admiring expression on her face. "You ain't 'alf strong, mate. An' such a lovely voice! Ain't he got a lovely voice, Ridge? Eh?"

She takes a half-step towards their pursuer.

"Can you sing, mate? I bet yer a good singer, with a voice like that. Nice timbre to it. Good looker, an' all. What's yer name, mate? Only I've been callin' yer Andy."
27 May 2021, 3:13pm
Ina saw that expression of resentment on both Jacqueline and Creamy's faces and realised that it's quite not the result that she wanted to see. Especially when it's about Jacqueline. And there was one of her thoughts about the Imperials that she forgot to remember in the right time. And also her struggle to shape her thoughts into words. Because there's always more thoughts than words, and words aren't always accurate and aren't always actually covering even a part of thoughts. And the plain fact that the words are too slow.

"Ah, dammit. I forgot about that hidden trait of Imps. They always have that feeling of being guilty and distrusted by most, because of their ways of life... And they carry it with them forever... No matter what kind of Imperial is standing before me. One from aristocracy or former slave."

That feeling and the most of similar feelings were completely unknown and imperceivable to her, so she had to just keep this line in mind every time. But probably she was a bit tired by now to be at her best in maintaining control over the words said. Especially after ground action that had just ended and then some time spent on attentively reading several articles about possible captivity-caused traumas, before she finally get to her favourite tea.

"Phah. The irony. Love it. I wanted to offer her an option to go with me, but now I have to make an apology. Well... Maybe I really needed that chance? To show that I'm actually able to do it? And to let her see that a person, who did... Well, what I did on the surface... Is actually interested in her personal opinion? And she have an influence on someone too? That she matters? It might be even helpful..."

"Aw... Damn... I'm... I'm sorry. Well. I forgot about this thing", Ina started as soon as cabin door closed. "As I see... Imperials like to think about prejudices and distrust that are directed at them. Personally. But the elites and the government are responsible for this. They are to blame. And you may think that any random non-Imperial person feels more sympathy for Feds or Alliance... Perhaps. Not the case here", she shrugged.

Ina finished her tea and disposed the empty tube to a bin. Then she resumed, "I really don't like what all these three governments do to people. What they force people to endure trying to keep their order intact, and those fancy high chairs under their arses. Feds and Als included. At least Empire have the gut to call slavery a right word. Does it make me an anarchist? Maybe", she shrugged again and even smiled faintly.

Jacqueline listened to her, nodding.

"Khm... I was born in Fed space. It didn’t make me love them more than others. I saw what they do... The same. Rejected the citizenship as soon as I was able to fill these lines on my own in PilotFed papers... And I may die once like a nobody in a middle of nowhere, without a rank and a station named after me... But I'm happy that I'm not participating in it. I'm actually fighting it, all kinds of it, be it lawful and proper, or somebody like those today's dipshits. And that 'security' I mentioned... It was about you. Personal."

Ina left her seat and slowly walked towards Jacqueline.

"Just... Let me make you some tea. Please?"

Michael raises his weapon, leveled at the ingerloper. He snarles, his teeth bared. With one hand he unfurls his backpack, raising the mechanical skull before him, it's spinal column twitching in subtle writhes.

"You mean this?"
27 May 2021, 5:31pm
"Well, Andy?"

Veronica, keeping her rifle pointed down, steps sideways and nods towards the device in Ridge's hand.

"Do yer mean that? Is that what this 'as all been about? A tin skull with a tail? I mean, it's a funny thing to make such a big fuss over. Whatcher want it for, anyway? Gunna put it in a museum or somethin', are yer?"
27 May 2021, 6:33pm
The Hunter shifts his gaze at the woman, seeing more than mere looks.

"You," he says. "You never intended to be here. Aid me in acquiring the relic, and my ship is yours. It is your only way off this world. Even now I am sending it into orbit, beyond the reach of any meddling."

As if to enunciate his point, the roar of high-powered ship engines can be heard outside, muffled and distant.

More heavy footsteps approach from behind him. One after another, his biomechanical minions lumber into the room, forming a semicircle around the trapped duo.

Ridge follows one hulking minion with his carbine, then another, then another, until it becomes apparent that they're hopelessly outnumbered and surrounded.

"Don't listen to it," he whispers. "They want us all dead. It's their core programming."

He inches further toward the central structure, holding the relic aloft. A Thargoid-made insertion chamber roils and fumes with biomechanical heat, still active after untold eons.
