Elite roleplay: Off station

OFF STATION

Your ship, deep space, anything that is not happening inside the Citi Gateway or Ingaba...

General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

Then she paused for a second and proceeded more slowly. "So... I'm curious now... You know, haste is a synonym for a bad planning... And also you like to turn your back to armed people... And you wanted to see me here, not anybody else...", she turned her head, looking at JB, "Why?!"

JB gave a slight shrug.

"Haste in our business is profit margins... we don't make money hanging around. You gotta trust you'll make the right decision 9 times outta 10... then be prepared that, 1 time in every 10, you can fix things on the go."

JB took a couple of seconds to line up with the next jump. Once he'd got The Cuckoo on target he set the frameshift to charge.

"... as for turning my back on someone with a gun? Well, usually if I offer someone a job I don't expect them to shoot me in the back for doing so. I get that it must've seemed like a dodgy way of contacting you but we're against the clock. Which brings us to why I wanted to hire you. You're a tech genius or something, right? Yeah... I need a tech-head to help with a rescue job."
04 May 2021, 11:26pm
Ina was listening to JB, trying to lay her eyes on a navigation panel, as HUD symbols were to small to read from her seat. Knowing where you are exactly never hurts. However, navpanel was placed at the left side of pilot seat, as usual, therefore blocked by JB himself, so the only thing she could see is a small piece of its corner, without any information.

"Dammit. Okay, let's just wait and see where all this goes."

Then, when JB said the last part, she rolled her eyes for a second and answered. "Okaaay... This is... probably not a trap. And this business of yours is something that cops don't like. Judging by the ship. And the contacting. And you, perhaps. And the 'tech genius'..."

Ina turned her head to look forward and let out a slight exhale.

"They definitely was digging my old job history record, but only to give it a quick look afterwards. Sure. Those of shady type are always so self-confident."

"But your luck ran out just here, I'm no genius", she turned her face to JB again and then shrugged with a sarcastic smirk, "I was an average tech, simple industrial and station machinery, even consumer-grade stuff... Dropped it about two years ago".
05 May 2021, 12:03am
"Looks like we've got ourselves a 1-in-10 situation then," JB replied with a sigh.

JB paused for a second as he contemplated his next move. It was a punch in the dick, for sure. The original plan, a "Goondock Well", would've kept them out of any fighting; a quick retrieval without the risk of hurting the client. That plan died on the vine as JB was probably as qualified as his guest.

"So, Commander Muir," JB began, going through scenarios in his head, "I'm afraid we're keeping the left door closed on this one... sorry, I mean it's a non-stop journey... either you can stay on the ship and I'll pay you for your time or you can tell me what you are qualified for and we can find a new way to upgrade your pay-scale on this one?"
05 May 2021, 12:31am
"This guy is still quiet about the details. That's pretty usual. He probably wanted me to do some dirty work without knowing anything, to frame me in the end or just leave alone in some godforsaken place. Trying to dupe a wrong woman."

Ina looked not just calm, but double calm. Like she knew that this question was coming, after realising how badly JB read her personal record, leaving the most important parts unnoticed.

"I have my set of skills, Commander Threepwood. Don't be worried about it. Getting paid enough to sit here out of... true curiosity. Phah!", Ina tried to sound somewhat more entertained, but it was hard to tell, "So. What's the deal? Details. And then you'll hear about the skills."
05 May 2021, 1:04am
There's probably a lot of pilots back at Jamaica Inn that would describe JB as a control freak. They'd probably be right. He doesn't mean it maliciously, he had just spent so much of his life looking after himself that he wasn't used to having others contributing. It was something he was working on.

"Of course," JB began, taking the time to turn his chair to face Ina better. "Long story short, we've been hired by a company to rescue their client, he's been kidnapped but has a tracking device. I've done this sort of job before and it doesn't take long before the kidnappers disable the beacon. I just want us to get close to the ship the client's on so we don't lose them."

JB tried to gauge his guest's reaction to see if she was still interested but she wasn't giving anything away... JB made a mental note to never play poker against her.

"I just need to know what you can do to see where we can fit you in, Ms Muir?"
05 May 2021, 1:35am
"Well, that's a start, at least"

"A company. A client. A rescue mission", Ina counted to three with fingers, paused a bit staring at them, and then turned her head to JB, looking into his eyes, "righteous enough to get some attention of an average pilot".

Then she looked at the hyperspace tunnel through the canopy glass again, and said with a slow, distant tone, "Companies... Clients... Kidnapping... So much of them around... So easy to place a contract on the board and watch the heroes come..."

"Okay", said Ina more distinctively, facing JB, "I'm a combat pilot. And decent enough, how they say. Ship is in maintenance now. Thought that you need a pilot. However...", Ina pointed to a rifle, clamped to the right side of her seat, "can show some teeth while on foot". She made a pause to let that information settle down and then proceeded, "and I don't shoot until I know who's the target, and, more important, who's interested in making me shooting. Still can put some wires together or make their biowaste pumps run backwards, though."

Vengerfield had wasted no time, as soon as the Python from The Anansi was on final approach he had Vodan accompany him to the pad. Negotiations with the Corsairs had been a little tense and them not allowing The Anansi to jump into Lozin system was the heavily contended sticking point. Understandably, the Corsairs were not happy with Vengerfield bringing a considerable force into their space when hosting him and his hostage was no more than a professional curiously to start with.

The long negotiation process had at least given the work crews enough time to turn an abandoned research outpost on the second moon of 8B into something Vengerfield approved of along with his special requests for Creamys’ interrogation. Vodan was especially pleased with the slave he had managed to acquire; he used the extra time to have her undergo a little cosmetic surgery and now she echoed Nerys Nymei. The similarity wasn’t too heavy as to be obvious, but it was there and Creamy wouldn’t miss it.

The gas giant above was lit by the primary star and the two more distant stars added their own shades to the light being reflected illuminating the small compound. Vodans’ visor dimmed to protect his eyes as he watched the ship land. No dust was kicked up because until recently, the pads had been very busy; the thin atmosphere didn’t carry the sound very well so the mighty ship drifted down like a ghost with very little appreciation for the power being excreted.

The boarding ramp was being lowered before the landing gears had settled and Vengerfield boarded the ramp before hit the ground. Vodan had to run to keep up with his masters long strides; the man was eager to share the first words with Creamy. Vodan near ran into the mans’ back once he reached the cargo bay; Vengrfield had stopped on the large doorway staring in disbelief at the scene before him.

Creamy Goodness III

While the ship landed, there was plenty of noise outside the cell but no one was unbolting the door so an ambush and dash for the cockpit wasn’t going to be an option anyway. All of a sudden, the busyness outside the cell stopped. Creamy pressed his ear to the vent in the door to listen.

“Vodan, please explain to me why your men could not understand an order as simple as no contact with the prisoner beyond delivering daily requirements” asked Vengerfield in his deep but smooth calm voice.

The men helping Dyson rig up makeshift radio signal blocking sheets around Creamys’ cell stopped in place and Dyson who was returning from the industrial synthesiser with a new sheet dropped it the moment they saw Vengerfield taking his helmet off and Vodan behind him shaking from anger and maybe fear. Dyson felt his chin judder as Vengerfield calmly walked towards him.

“He he he’s got an implant that’s been sending a pulse through our own communication system” explained Dyason quickly pointing at Creamys’ cell.

Everyone by the cell took the opportunity to get out of the hold as soon as Vengerfield had strode by.

“There’s a chance a team from Sovereign Shield will come to extract Goodness” pleaded Dyson cringing, hoping the explanation would save his life for ignoring Vengerfields command.

Vengerfield did pause looking down on the cowering man.

“I am well aware of Sovereign Shields protection. Unlike your men, I research the task ahead of me Vodan. Who is this one?” asked Vengerfield without taking his eyes off the man in front of him.

“Dyson sir. Security cracker and ambush pilot, one of my command staff” answered Vodan hoping to save his best hacker.

“Oh Dyson, I suppose you thought you were helping. There is a reason I picked this system Dyson; what do you think would happen to an Imperial loyalist force that entered this system with hostile intent?”

Dyson didn’t have to think hard about it. The Corsairs wouldn’t let any ship like that enter their space without repercussions.

“Besides” continued Vengerfield “Sovereign Shield won’t make a move until proof of capture has been sent to a recognised authority. They are an insurance company after all”
Vangerfield put his hand on Dysons’ shoulder and pushed him towards the exit.
“Now, why don’t you tell me how you are getting on with the covas?” he suggested while following Dyson towards the bunk room.

Dyson, grateful for his reprieve sagged once again; he didn’t want to explain to Vengerfield why he hadn’t cracked the covas after being caught in the cargo hold by Vengerfield himself.

JB smiled, a level of relief was lifting from his shoulders. That's not a million miles away from a "Goondock Well" anyway. He returned his chair to its proper position so he could take control of the ship.

"The Cuckoo's fast but she's not designed for combat," JB called back as he continued following the beacon on his Nav-Map. "Not exactly sure what we'll find at the end of this trail but it could be anything. So long as we don't lose them we can always call for back-up. If you can handle yourself when things go sideways then hopefully it'll be something we can tackle ourselves... keeps the overheads down."

JB checked that the two other ships in his wing, the DBXs belonging to Cookie and Dutch, were still following. Ina Muir seemed competent enough by her own account, but it was always good to have options if the shit hits the fan.
05 May 2021, 2:46pm
"Both of us had seen some crap. And we're still alive. It means something", Ina said, returning to her stargazing.

"Still nothing about who and why, however... I'll better ask now, before it turned out that I was helping somebody whom I don't want to help."

"So, who's our hostage?", said Ina after a pause. "Who's the 'bad guys'?.. Okay. I know you like to keep things shush, especially from... Outsiders like me who don't look your type. That's your way to go."

Telling these words, Ina took her communicator out of the pocket. Indicators were off, showing no incoming at any of the channels, but she still tapped a screen several times and scrolled it a bit, reading something, and a soft smile returned to her. She sat like this for a few seconds, then switched comms to 'silent' mode and slowly put the device back into a pocket.

"I'll be fine...", she started talking again with a distant tone.

"I'll be fine, I have to."

But then she returned to her usual talking and proceeded. "And... If it's going to be some 'spec ops rescue thing', how many are on our side?"
05 May 2021, 6:34pm
The covas core was still on the desk where Dyson left it with its four characters and a prompt blinking invitingly. His laptop was open next to it with its many tabs for Sovereign Shield and D’if filling its screen. Dyson took a breath and got ready to admit the covas was not an open book ready for Vengerfield to read at his leisure, but Vengerfield spoke first.

“D’if, an island fort that was used as a prison. An ancient Earth general imprisoned a rebel he feared would become a martyr if his country’s people found out the man had died. I believe the general may have been imprisoned there himself” informed Vengerfield musing over the validity of his last claim.

Dyson looked from Vengerfield to the screen amazed that the man had a lead after just glancing at the word.

“It also featured in a book, The Count of Monte Cristo. Given Lord Goodness will become a Count once his parents pass, you may want to try that; or perhaps Edmond Dantès.. although given Goodness’ appreciation of women, Mercédès maybe a better choice; French spellings with the accents above the appropriate letters”

Vangerfield looked at the laptop as if Dyson should be using it by now so Dyson quickly sat down and reconnected with the covas. Before he could get typing, Vengerfield asked another question.

“Dose the covas have a password limit Dyson?”

“Yes sir, my lord, master, and I think a burn word in case we tried to pressure Goodness for accesses”

Dyson squeezed his eyes tight coming to the decision to confess that he had gone to see the prisoner to ask about a password for the covas. It was bound to come out when Vengerfield was questioning Creamy anyway.

“I tried to get Goodness to tell me the password so I could at least eliminate the burn and perhaps gain a clue to the aRRRGH!”

Dyson saw Vengerfield twitch and then his leg exploded in agony. Looking down he could see his foot at an impossible angle and a broken bone was sticking out of his shin.

“Usually I would crush your hand or take an eye, but as I may need you if Creamy does not survive interrogation, I chose to break your leg instead. Disobeying my orders is unwise. You have Vodan to thank for your light punishment because he clearly values you. Get that leg fixed and then get to work on the covas. Now I have given you a waypoint to follow I assume it will be less of a challenge?”

Dyson just groaned in what he hoped was an affirmative way and looked for something to lean on to assist his hobbling to the medi-bay.

“The cost of your medical care will be coming out of your shares and if I attain the password for you, you will receive no shares at all for a month. Now I wish to prepare to receive Goodness. Have someone move his cell to his room while you’re on your travels Dyson”

The man left as Dysons’ vision faded and he passed out from shock.

"And... If it's going to be some 'spec ops rescue thing', how many are on our side?"

JB raised his eyebrows. Ina was right, he did like to keep his cards close to his chest. That wasn't the case here though, he was just trying to keep them on track behind the beacon.

"Ok, Muir, the hostage is called Creamy Goodness," JB began as he took a brief look back towards Ina, he was aware that he was coming across as closeted so he was making an effort to connect with CMDR Muir. "There's no intel as to who's taken him."

JB noticed that the beacon was still a fair distance across the bubble but was starting to slow down. The fuel scoop on The Cuckoo was struggling to keep up with the rate of jumps they were going by and JB was having to judge his arc around each star to make sure he wouldn't waste any time having to loop around any of them en route.

"We've got two DBXs with us," JB continued, "Cookie, Nimesh Singh, in Little Black Foal and Dutch, Fauxtenrouix Sleet, in Scallywag. They're good for a distraction but they're fast and they're kitted out for passengers so they're good for extractions too."

"Creamy... Phah", Ina giggled a bit, "Creamy Goodness. Quite an unusual name. Pseudonym maybe? And who's them, actually? One won't kidnap a random worthless Joe Fart. Perhaps, some important person."

"And what if that JB is somebody's pawn too? I know how these companies work. They give you not just the minimal information, they select it to make you do what they want to be done and in the way they want it to be done. And nothing more."

"So, Commander Threepwood. JB. May I call you by the name? Haven't you thought about... This company that gave you the contract. They may play the similar game with you. Keeping the important data out of your eyes. Making things that they want to be done by a person who don't care? Who do things for the money? And it's certainly much less money than they have out of it."

Ina was sitting in a co-pilot seat, looking at the kaleidoscope of stars and hyperjump tunnels, changing each other in a quick succession, and the balance of heat and fuel scooping rate, when ship was passing through star coronas. Looking at this for almost the whole journey, she was silently admitting JB's piloting skills. Combat zones were her element, she spent a lot of time and effort focusing on skills, required for open battle, but chasing something through the Galaxy at that pace was a bit mesmerizing.

"And...", Ina continued slowly, "You know... I like to boost through the airlocks too". And the last part sounded slightly more lively.
06 May 2021, 12:17am
"Threepwood's fine but you can call me JB," he said, still facing the console. "Companies like Sovereign Shield will insure rich families in case their little brats get yapped... kidnapped... it's depressingly common, especially with big Imperial families. The insurance company won't want to pay the full amount of the ransom so they'll hire a company like mine to extract the client for a quarter of the cost of the bond. Family gets the kid back, my company gets paid, insurance company saves millions... everybody's happy."

JB noticed that the beacon hadn't moved during the last jump, he quickly bookmarked the system it was in just to make sure.

"This Creamy isn't a kid though," JB continued, "He's an adult. From experience that means it's usually one of those daft inbred lads or a crooked fucker. His name's a strange one but, to be honest, I've heard more ridiculous. Speaking of names, how would you rather be called, commander?"

"Yeah. I knew that this is going to be controversial. Bless the intuition. Independent folks just don't have enough money to protect themselves that way."

"Imps. Wow. I like the irony," Ina answered almost instantly. "Okay, let it be some inbred royalty dipshit with a slave kink. History of his rescue might be... Of some use for me. Of course if we succeed. But..."

"Of course he knows. He just don't give a crap. Who am I kidding."

"But... You know how much grief and suffering in this money. However those kidnappers aren't better than Imps. They want Imps to pay them, even via the Sovereign Shield, and it's the same slavery money. So... I'm in. Anyway, I'll buy some ammo. And then will return it to the Imps that way."

"Hmmm... If it all works out... Then I could use this occasion as an ace up my sleeve in some another local war. If cannons won't be enough. Just like... Trying to make them go back off somehow. Maybe I could push this hostage guy to talking with them. Or I just invite him to a friendly tea party and then make him a hostage again by myself. A thing to think about later..."

"Yup", said Ina after a pause, "Count me in. And... Let it be by the name. Leave the PilotFed callsign for flying situations".

JB listened as Ina spoke about the Empire. JB wasn't bothered about the whole Fed/Imp thing as it never really made any difference to Jamaica Inn's little edge of the bubble. JB was technically an Admiral in the Federal Navy... but that was only because of Barboni, a corrupt local faction leader. Barboni used Federal money to line his own pockets, promoting JB was just another tax write-off.

JB nodded. Not that he agreed, just that the minor politics of his own systems gave him enough of a headache without getting into a huge discussion about the big parties. Whether you called them Fednecks or Gimperials, neither of them cared enough about JB for him to care back.

JB noticed that the beacon still hadn't moved during their last three jumps.

"I think they've stopped," he called back to Muir, "I'll keep an eye on any communications from Sovereign Shield, see if the kidnappers make any demands... hopefully it'll waste some time whilst we come up with a plan."
