Elite roleplay: Off station

OFF STATION

Your ship, deep space, anything that is not happening inside the Citi Gateway or Ingaba...

General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

"S.O.S. Pirates have engaged our Transport. Shields are down, FSD is malfunctioning. We have women and children onboard. I repeat women and children are onboard. Please help.
message will repeat.... S.O.S....."

"WHAT THE !!" I shouted, as my survival mask flipped into place over my head. Stopped carrying weapons on most of my ships a long time ago.

Yanking the kevlar harness tight and gripping the stick I tried to point the lasers in the right direction as Sam dived, pulled up and banked the ASP - not the most agile fighting machine. At last they locked on target. I fired, keeping an eye on power to the weapons.

This was not me. I avoided danger like a plague. Boost away and jump out, that's me. But those people on the transport couldn't be left. Let's hope help arrives. let's hope the pirates take the cargo and run. Better to lose the cargo than a life.

"Just distract them, lure them away." I screamed, probably in vain.

Sam sounded murderous. One of the vipers yawed towards us, we were hopelessly outnumbered. The lasers stopped turning into plasma clouds when hitting the Cobra, it's shields were down, Sam had a chance - hit him hard with something, encourage him to break off the attack. It worked, at least temporarily, maybe he was only re-charging his shields.

Meowers

"Get to the ship while I hold them off", Ina commanded to the comms, firing short bursts to suppress the incoming bandits, without aiming at somebody in particular, however, the red blood cloud clearly visible even at that distance told that her kill tally here wasn't closed yet. Opponents were forced to stop their advance and hit the ground too, using terrain as a cover.

Hearing the metal sound of landed SRV behind her, she repeated, "Go! Get to the ship!"

JB didn't need to be told twice. He climbed out of the sparking turret and made his way to the rear of the ship. Creamy was already out of the SRV and was guiding the slave-nurse in the same direction. Ina was doing a good job of suppressing the incoming horde, making it easier for them to reach to access ramp. JB vaulted the battered tail-fin and dropped to the landing pad. With a quick press of his Comms Unit the entrance to The Cuckoo opened.

Sensing that the others shouldn't be too far behind him, JB sprinted through the ship and jumped into the pilot's seat. As he began to fire up the engines he shouted into his comms,

"Muir, make sure those two get aboard then give me a shout. We're getting out of this shithole!"

Sensing that the others shouldn't be too far behind him, JB sprinted through the ship and jumped into the pilot's seat. As he began to fire up the engines he shouted into his comms,

"Muir, make sure those two get aboard then give me a shout. We're getting out of this shithole!"

JB lead the way without waiting, it seems this model of ship didn’t have a top- hatch.

“This way if you please Jacqueline; well done for keeping hold of the buggy by the by. Not easy, but you did it with aplomb” said Creamy as he lead the nurse the way JB had run. “Just one more short hop and were on the way out of here. Bout time what?” he said completely unaware he couldn’t be heard.

Creamy kept hold of Jacqueline shielding her from the approaching raiders. There was a ship between them, but it still sounded dangerous as they gently touched down.

Now was the time to run and Creamy saw that Jacqueline boarded first. Ducking down on the ramp, Creamy looked for the last member of the team. Calling to her, Creamy put his hand out to help pull Ms Muir to safety when she was ready to board.
23 May 2021, 9:24pm
Ina made a short glance backwards to see Creamy and Jacqueline entering the ship and engines starting to boot up, so it was her time to move out as well. She disengaged the bipod magnets, got up from the ground quickly and ran up the boarding ramp, to turn over and drop on one knee right after passing its moving part, spraying ammo left in her magazine over the opponents' position. Being shot in the back a few seconds before safety wasn't a good idea.

"Ready to go, JB", she reported.

Magazine got empty and Ina was about to reload when she saw the ramp closing. So, after showing a middle finger to her unlucky opponents, Ina stood up, made a step back and then saw Creamy who was standing near all this time, offering a hand, so she looked at him, then at his hand, then at his face again and raised an eyebrow.

"Hm."
24 May 2021, 11:08am
For some people, independence had to be fierce, and Creamy could respect that; after all, he felt he belonged to that school himself. He also knew that no man is an island and a helping hand is a dreadful thing to miss when it’s not there.

“I say! That’s some prime-level gunnery; absolutely capital that girl. Right, Jacqueline and I were wondering where we should be for take-off. I imagine BJ had headed directly for the cockpit so we better take a seat too sweet what?”

Being on a ship that offered liberty, Creamy couldn’t help but think of himself. They were still in danger and Creamy knew Jacqueline was not dealing with this situation as well as he could, but the thought of proper food and something to drink other than water was making Creamy salivate already.
24 May 2021, 11:31am
"Goodness! Cockpit!" JB called back down the central corridor, he was watching his shields on the HUD as they were peppered with shots. With the outside door closed he lifted The Cuckoo straight up vertically. "Muir, take the nurse to Cabin 2..." then addressing the girl directly, "...help yourself to clothes, miss."

JB didn't want to let Creamy and the slave girl go into one of his cabins alone. He'd endured too many stints in prison to know what's on your mind when you first get out from being locked-up... and those posh bedsheets are expensive to get cleaned.

"Comms are open in 2, Muir, give me a shout when you're both belted in."

JB started to plot a course out of the system whilst he waited for everyone to get safely into their seats.
24 May 2021, 1:43pm
"Sure", Ina answered to JB and then walked to Cabin 2 door, "Jacqueline, come in, take a seat".

While Jacqueline was still breathing heavily and looking a bit overwhelmed by this makeshift escape operation, especially the loud and dirty Ina's performance, cozy seat and classy cabin interior were making things easier for her now, as she finally was looking even a bit relaxed.

"We'll find something more suitable for you... As soon as we leave this godforsaken cesspit", Ina said, placing a rifle in the holding clamps and then taking a seat nearby.

"Ready. Get us out of here".

A plasma volley lands too close, the force from such flipping Michael's SRV onto its back, the vehicle skidding to a halt, leaving a long trail in the resin-plagued soil. Michael blinks, dazed, a trail of blood trailing down his nose. His canopy is cracked open and his instruments are dead. What parts of his SRV aren't a crumpled mess are a scorched hulk, plasma residue blackening the outer frame.

Michael coughs, groaning. He releases his restraints, falling to the ground, a mixture of soil and glass shards from his canopy. With painful effort he pushes the door open.

"Katie... get to the structure. I'll make it there on foot. Just... gotta... secure the relic."

The Fer de Lance lands in a precise, swift manner. Its engines aren't even cooled before the entryway opens, a solitary man descending down the entry ramp, in full battle armor and a plasma rifle in his hands. His face is set in the same cold expression. It grows colder still when he spots Michael struggling to escape his SRV.

Nor is he alone for long. Within moments his cargo bay opens, a dozen or so mechanical monstrosities dropping onto the planetary surface, grotesque and enslaved to the man's will, lurching forward in inhuman lockstep...

With everyone ready to go, JB pulled up the nose of The Cuckoo. As they started to climb he saw the three returning Vultures starting to head in their direction. Ina must've shut down the outpost's broadcasting Comms for them to not come in with their hardpoints out. If they saw the plumes of smoke around the outpost that might change... JB didn't want to take any chances;

"Cookie, Dutch...," JB called into his Comms Unit to the two DBXs that were lurking nearby, "... we've got the package. If these Bogies go hot I want you two to keep them off our back. If you lose us we'll meet you at the rally point."

JB didn't want to draw further attention by boosting so, instead, he just patiently waited for The Cuckoo to leave the mass lock. He kept one eye on the HUD, making sure that the Vultures didn't equip their weapons.

"...shit..."

The Vultures either spotted the mess below, or the outpost managed to get a message out, as the three Vultures decided to engage their Keelback. JB hit the "boost", propelling them forwards. The Vultures had to retract their weapons to try and stay in pursuit but JB couldn't afford for them to get too close in case it slowed down their jump.

As the "Mass Lock" sign clicked off JB hit the FSD. The Vultures were nearing, JB could already see the effect one the FSD charge. Luckily the two DBXs boosted in from nowhere. They were what was known in smuggling circles as Bandits (Bait ANd DIstraction Team). They weren't designed for battle, just enough to piss people off so they'll leave the mission cargo alone.

The DBXs began to rattle the Vultures' shields... luckily it was enough for them to take evasive manoeuvres... giving The Cuckoo a chance to boost further away... and for the FSD to fully charge, sending them into witchspace.

JB finally removed his helmet as he began the standard "Scoop & Jump" plan.

"There's a briar patch of Fed systems nearby, we'll lose them there," JB said as he turned to face Creamy. "You're not wanted in Fed space too... are you, Goodness?"

With a sudden, sharp tug on the control column, Veronica spins her SRV around one hundred and eighty degrees and then brings it to a stop.

Dead ahead, just within range of her headlights, she can see the crumpled wreck of Ridge's SRV. To the right of it is the man himself, crawling on his hands and knees. Some two hundred metres away to the left is the now-landed Fer de Lance, discernible in the dark only by its running lights. Apart from the stars above, all else is in pitch blackness.

Veronica switches off her headlights and turns on the night vision. Instantly, everything beyond the confines of her canopy is outlined in a vivid green glow. There is Ridge and his shattered SRV; to his right is the huge, jagged mound of rock which had separated her from him only moments ago. But it is the Fer de Lance which occupies Veronica's full attention. Or rather, the grotesque squad of battle machines leaving it, together with the armed and armoured figure leading them forward.

"Oh, bugger..."

Taking a deep breath, Veronica slams the throttle full forward.

"Ridge! I'm comin' to get yer! Be ready— with or without the bleedin' relic!"

Seconds later, Veronica brings her SRV to a skidding handbrake halt next to Ridge, the wreck of his SRV providing scant cover from their pursuer and his small mechanised army.

"Climb on," she says to Ridge over the comms, "an' cling on tight to whatever you can. It's gunna be a bumpy ride."
24 May 2021, 9:45pm
Ridges holds up his hand.

"Wait!"

He turns, scrambling to the felled SRV's cargo platform. Keying the controls at one of the containers, a large package slides down and hits the ground. It barely fits inside Michael's backpack, the man securing the load to his Maverick suit. He turns, climbing onto the platform of Katie's SRV. He thumps the canopy a few times, sitting with his back to it and unslinging his carbine.

"Let's move!"

The Hunter notes his quarry salvaging an item of indescribable value, barely making it onto the back of his partner's vehicle. He snarls, raising his rifle and firing at extreme range.

As the SRV tumbled off the hull, Creamy felt sure JB was going to say something but the man was concentrating on getting off the planetoid. The outside of this ship didn’t match the inside at all. Creamy always had a good word for a commander that knew the many benefits of quality carpet. The decoration was tasteful, but lacked the eye of an interior designer; it was still far better than most ships Creamy had been rescued on.

Vodan’s pressure suit was very uncomfortable pulling in all the wrong places and the boots were pinching his toes, so Creamy checked the pressure differential. It wasn’t much, just like coming up for the bottom of a diving pool, but Creamy was coming down from painkillers and feeling the extent of his injuries now the excitement was over and inertia pressed on him, so adding expanding gasses to his stressed organs probably wouldn’t be a good idea. It wouldn’t take long to bring the pressure down to let him equalise anyway.

"There's a briar patch of Fed systems nearby, we'll lose them there," JB said as he turned to face Creamy. "You're not wanted in Fed space too... are you, Goodness?"

Creamy checked the suit's vocaliser was on before answering.
“I don’t think the people after me would care if I was in the Presidents’ Palace.. . whatever they have, on earth; or the safest drum circle the Alliance could muster. Borders seem to matter very little to them”

Glancing at the locker that he’d used to strap down and secure Ninette, Creamy took a moment to thank the man that had come for him.

“Thanks to you and the angry young lady in the back, I was removed from there before they cracked my covas and I cracked, giving up a name. You have my deepest gratitude AJ, and I’ll see to it Sovereign Shield doesn’t try to pull a fast one on the bill. I know exactly how much I’m covered for and my annual premium is steep enough I can tell you”

Ina was sitting in a cozy seat and having a well-deserved relax. She dimmed cabin lights down a bit too, and was just floating in her usual stream of thoughts, most of which were not about the things that happened to her last day, but about what to do next.

She was glancing at Jacqueline from time to time too. Her seat was nearby, side by side, and Ina was gladly noticing that rescued woman was definitely feeling herself better now, without any sights of tremor, heavy breath, fear or anxiety, she was even calm and a little drowsy watching GalNet news on the seat-mounted screen.

"Let her rest. No useless talks, no interrogations, no asking 'what do you want to do next'... Phah. She probably don't even know what to do next. Let her... regain a bit of control of what's happening with her and around her. No, I'm not giving her up to Search And Rescue office, I had seen how they work back at Lave after those NMLA bombings, they're going to ask her one hundred times about what happened, how it was, in detail, and where her documents are... Completely not good for that kind of trauma. Damn bureaucrats. And then they will kick her away on the streets afterwards, and I know what can happen to a woman without a home and money on the streets. Another... slavery. No. Not on my shift."

Ina activated a comms interface and sent a text message to JB in the cockpit, so Jacqueline couldn't hear her speech: "Thank you, JB. She's not to be left alone at the moment."
