Elite roleplay: Off station

OFF STATION

Your ship, deep space, anything that is not happening inside the Citi Gateway or Ingaba...

General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

Peeling off the suit and getting in the shower was a good pain. Once he was released from its grip his body complained but the jets of hot water helped relax the discomfort. The sound of the drainage fan pulling the water out of the cubical wasn’t needed to drown out his singing, because for once Creamy was not in the mood to sing in the shower.

He dried off and replaced his underwear then took a moment to survey the room. It looked like it was used by someone so Creamy was careful not to disturb anything. After enjoying a surprisingly good reheated Kebab and the best cup of tea he could put together with the ingredients, Creamy made a call to the liner company he worked for.

The receptionist was very pleased to hear from Creamy and put him straight onto Susie Randel-Egbert, the managing director.

“Creeeeam! She said cheerfully as soon as she was on coms. “I’ve been trying to get hold of you for days. You’re fired!”

“Yes, that’s feels about right” answered Creamy entirely deadpan. “May I enquire as to why?”

“You can Cream. Page from the Cartel told me you got some bad mojo around you now. Some heavy people are after you Creamy”

“Have I indeed, well I best take care then hadn’t I?”

Susi was a busy woman with the well-being of almost a thousand employees and all the passengers that used the companies’ services on her shoulders. He didn’t want to add the weight of his situation to her workload.

“They are the kind of people that wouldn’t think twice about boarding our carrier just to get you. We can’t risk our customers and staff just for you. Sorry Cream” continued Susi casually. She’d sacked Creamy a few times; it was kind of a running joke between them now.

“No no, you’re alright, I totally understand. Listen, I’ve had a bit of bad luck and I’m stranded without a ship or any money. Can you have the dry dock crew sort out my ship, I think I got one there and send it along once I know where I am?”

“What you got into this time Cream? Cancel that, I don’t wanna know. Ok .. .. you got a Cobra here but it’s basically stripped” said Suzi still all business. This sort of request wasn’t that unusual between them.

“I know, I’m just glad I got any kind of ship left anywhere” Creamy took a deep breath “I’m also going to need a new slate, Pilots ID, and a replacement Cred-Stick”

Suzi was about to make a comment about how much trouble Creamy is, but he cut her off by continuing the list of his needs.

“I’ll also need some clothes and a flight suit. A few ready credits while I get my new stick online will probably help if you could go the extra stretch”

Suzi stopped what she was doing and actually listed to Creamy for once, she’d learned to just hear the bits she needed from him. He hadn't used an inappropriate term of endearment even once.

“Cream, are you alright? You don’t sound yourself” she asked earnestly.

“Oh, just a bad few days Susi; you know me. Mister Rubber Ball don’ch know? I’ll be back once I clear up this mess you told me about. If you could just send along the ship with all the goodies I asked for, that would give me a running start what?”

“Yeah, ok Cream. I’ll get that decked out and sorted out so it’s ready to go when you give me a location. Oh, and Cream, can I have the latest update for your show please? We gotta get the acts sorted like yesterday and you’re the only one with all the deets. Thanks buddy, gotta go”

The line went dead leaving Creamy with no job, but a little light at the end of the tunnel. After draining his cup of tea, Creamy laid down on the bed and closed his eyes.

Veronica looks back and forth between Ridge and Andy, then steps away from both so that she is equally distant from each of them.

"My associate 'ere," she says to Andy, "reckons the only sure way to destroy that skull - and the artificial intelligence gubbins inside of it - is by droppin' it down that 'ole he's stood next to. Is my associate correct? An' more to the point, Andy, why should I trust you to keep your word about lettin' me go if I 'elp yer?"
27 May 2021, 9:48pm
The Hunter advances, as do his minions.

"Because," he says. "Your choices are to submit or die."

For the first time, he smiles.

"You don't really think that this bestial lair can destroy a god, do you?"
27 May 2021, 9:55pm
Michael grits his teeth, his eyes narrowing.

"Only one way to find out."

He throws the skull toward the pit, opening fire with the carbine.
28 May 2021, 8:53am
"Aww, shit!"

Veronica, seeing the skull disappear into the pit, leaps backwards in a desperate bid to find cover. She scrambles behind a machine of some sort, an organic contraption which hums softly. Veronica draws her plasma pistol and takes aim at Andy's head.

"Why'd it 'ave to end in guns?" she yells as she fires her weapon. "I 'ate bloody guns!"
28 May 2021, 10:05am
In an instant, all the hulking machines have lurched into action, advancing toward the pair, man and woman firing.

A few shots glance away from The Hunter, tearing away skin and flesh, but he is essentially unwounded. The bloody metal frame of his true self is exposed through these wounds, ghastly and inhuman.

Michael concentrates fire on one advancing abomination, barely slowing it even with an entire clip emptied into its bulk. He glances at his partner, wide-eyed.

"Get back!"
28 May 2021, 10:11am
The Hunter takes a handful of rounds, his human skin shot away in places but protected by his armor. He watches the skull go into the chamber, snarling as he sprints forward, ignoring any danger. The skull is there, not having gone totally inside the roiling chamber, resting on a ridge. He kneels down to reach inside, triumphantly standing back up with his prize in his hands, the skull mere inches away from his human-like face, its spinal column writhing.

"You," he whispers, "are so beautiful."

He deigns to cast a glance the humans' way. His monstrosities continue their advance.

"Kill them. Kill them now."

JB sat in the cockpit of The Cuckoo, bottle of rum in hand and the soothing rumble of the engines in the background.

The adrenaline had long left his body and he was now just glad to be back aboard his ship, heading to a friendly station. The two other ships from his organisation had arrived in the system. JB told them to just follow behind as they made their way to Citi Gateway.

Muir was preoccupied with the slave girl so he left them alone in Cabin 2. Muir seemed to want to "Mother Hen" the girl for whatever reason. JB felt uncomfortable about the whole thing. She wasn't like the Imperial Slaves... she was skittish and timid. JB never trusted anyone that looked like they could break down or flip out at any moment. JB was looking forward to getting paid so he could pay Ina her cut. She was good in a firefight but she was dangerously unpredictable and JB liked a lot more control in a situation.

JB took a large swig of the rum.

The Creamy guy had surprised him. He'd expected a spoilt little Imp brat... but was impressed that he'd kept his shit together during the break out. He was a live wire too, JB felt like he was herding cats for most of the rescue but they'd all pulled their weight. JB was intrigued by whatever had put Creamy in that cell to begin with... but discretion was his business and questions are usually as welcome as a fart in a cockpit.

JB sat alone and took another swig. After a sigh he sent out a message to the two cabins;

Veronica growls.

"I knew he'd say that."

Seeing how little effect their weapons have on Andy, Veronica stops firing and looks frantically around the chamber. She does a double-take, spotting an inconspicuous recess in the wall opposite the door through which they had entered. The recess is perhaps nine or ten metres away from her. Ridge is closer, with his back to it.

Craning her neck as far as she dare without breaking her cover, Veronica is able to see that the recess leads to an open doorway. Switching her helmet comms to a private channel, she speaks to Ridge in an urgent whisper.

"Recess be'ind you. Move!"

Veronica takes a deep breath, then bounds across the chamber as fast as she can. Some of Andy's battle drones respond by raising their appendages and firing, but they are too slow; their shots thud harmlessly into the walls. With a shriek of desperation and fear, Veronica hurls herself through the recess and onto the floor of the corridor beyond. She quickly scrabbles to her feet and looks around for Ridge.

Michael looks on in horror as The Hunter holds the skull aloft. Seeing Katie make her escape, he dashes after her- but is caught mid-leap by one of the monstrosities. The machine hoists him up with ease, Michael kicking and struggling in its inhuman grip.

"Godsdammit!"

The machine's face is a horrifying amalgamation of human skull fragments grafted to a misshapen head, eyeless and unfeeling. Michael drops his carbine, unholstering his pistol and firing point-blank into the monster's face. The monstrosity recoils and shudders, it's garish features slagged and melted... but its grip only tightens. Michael grasps the claws around his neck, his airways closing, his eyes bulging...
28 May 2021, 1:05pm
The Hunter snarls in rage as the woman slips through the recess, but smiles as the man is caught in his minion's grip. He walks up, Michael's features beet-red, his air and blood flow cut off. He leans in close, his face inches from Michael's, contempt dripping from every word.

"Die, inferior...."

A new voice sounds from behind the recess, male and urgent and Iberian, a figure appearing in the shadowy distance beyond.

"Not today, bastardo. Seniora, get down!"

Both women were sitting on a side of the bed and drinking tea when JB made his announcement. It gave Ina a quite mixed thoughts. She was enjoying the calm, quiet and pleasant moment, a relaxation without any unnecessary and awkward words, wishing that it would last as long as possible, but, on the other hand, it was a long awaited return. This whole adventure was weird and unusual for her, starting out of curiosity, then gaining some motive that was pretty close to her own, and now it have a completely new meaning.

After all, she was more into acting on her own, piloting her own ship, making her own decisions, and this situation of being carried around wasn't fully comfortable for her.

"Hear that?", Ina said, "Let's buckle up."

"Citi Gateway?.. Where are we?", Jacqueline asked with a glimpse of surprise.

"Inara system. Independent space", Ina answered as both women were occupying their seats, "Quite... Interesting place if you ask me".

"Is that's your home?"

"Nope. I have... No home. As I like to say, this Galaxy is my home", Ina looked at Jacqueline and smiled.

"Ummm... Wow. You don't look like... Poor and homeless person. You're living on some kind of ship? Or... Where? How?.."

"Yeah. I have a ship. A Fer-de-Lance. On a maintenance now right at this place. Nothing serious, just a scheduled routine checkup. But they're probably already close to finishing the work. So I rent a living cabin on the station... As I do usually when I have to hang around some certain place for a couple of days".

"So... We part our ways?..", Jacqueline was suddenly very confused. Obviously she didn't want to be left alone, without money, without ID card, without any directions, wearing a stolen oversized space suit.

"Well... If you want to. But... I know. You don't have much options now. So... I can take you to the local SAR office. However... Your current state... You can stay in my cabin as well. For free. Nobody's waiting for me there. We can rest there and think about our next steps... Without a rush. You have a choice. So... Take your time. We'll dock, hit the more solid ground and then you can ask me everything you want".
28 May 2021, 7:34pm
"You what? Who the 'ell are you?"

Veronica hurriedly steps aside as the armed and armoured stranger fearlessly charges past her into the chamber. The sound of mixed weaponfire can be heard from within. Holstering her pistol, Veronica unslings the carbine rifle from her shoulder and steps back through the doorway.

She sees Ridge, on his hands and knees, crawling towards her. Nearby is the stranger, firing his weapon at Andy. At the far side of the chamber is another stranger, a female. She, too, is heavily armed and armoured, and is swiftly dispatching Andy's battle drones with a hand-held plasma cannon. The woman glances at Veronica.

"Get your compañero to safety, mi amiga. We will deal with the abominación."

Veronica helps Ridge to his feet and half-drags him back towards the alcove.

"It's all right, mate," she says. "Bleedin' cavalry's ere, innit."
28 May 2021, 8:04pm
Michael, freed when a burst of plasmafire staggered his assailant, coughs and stumbles, helped along by his partner. It's all he can do to choke out a reply.

"Who the hell are these people?"

Letting himself into the cockpit and sitting in the co-pilot's seat Creamy checked that his covas was still nice and safe before buckling in.

“It’s Citi then, it almost always is. Place draws people in like a black hole what? Mind if I send a mail before we jump that man?”
