Elite roleplay: Off station

OFF STATION

Your ship, deep space, anything that is not happening inside the Citi Gateway or Ingaba...

General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

Veronica stiffens as she hears the sound of footsteps relayed by her remlok's earpiece. She darts a glance at Ridge, jerking a thumb in the direction from which the noise comes, then squeezes herself into a dark alcove in the wall.
26 May 2021, 9:34pm
Michael ducks around a corner, carbine held close.

One of the monstrosities lumbers on by, cruel weapons of dismemberment protruding from long appendages. There is no design to the thing, no guiding purpose save brutality.

The mechanical pauses, scanning the area with a red laser wall.
26 May 2021, 9:41pm
The Fer de Lance bears down on the structure, hardpoints deploying. New coldness hardens The Hunter's features as both it and the landed Krait come into range.

Plasma accelerators escape the hull, lined up perfectly for the kill shot.

Without a trace of hesitation, The Hunter opens fire.
26 May 2021, 9:44pm
Seemingly satisfied with its scan, the mechanical continues on its way until it goes out of sight. The sound of its footsteps grows quieter, fading to silence. Veronica peeks out from her hiding place in the alcove and, seeing that the coast is clear steps forward with a nod to Ridge.

She cautiously advances further along the corridor.
26 May 2021, 9:47pm
Ridge's wrist computer, hitherto silent, sounds in the alien darkness.

"Ship under attack."

Ridge bears his teeth, his words a hushed whisper.

"Oh, shit..."

The monstrosity pauses, swinging in the direction of the noise, raising its weapons to a ready position, advancing toward Ridge, locked on to his bio-sig. MIchael's eyes widen, raising his carbine to firing level.

"Oh, shit!"

Blast after blast tortures the Misadventure, its shields giving way.

For the first time, The Hunter smiles.

The barrage resumes.
26 May 2021, 10:01pm
Aided by the low gravity, Veronica bounds towards the mechanical, drawing a frag grenade from her belt. As she passes the monstrosity she tucks the grenade into a cavity on its metallic shell, then dives towards an alcove.

"Take cover!" she calls to Ridge over the remlok comms.
26 May 2021, 10:05pm
Michael sees what his partner has done. The mechanical halts, evaluating which target to pursue. Michael dives into the alcove, landing on top of Katie. He tenses.

An explosion goes off around the corner, shaking the ground beneath them. The sound of something heavy falling to the ground can be heard.

The appendage that passes for the monstrosity's head rolls by them, smoke still training from its neck.
26 May 2021, 10:09pm
One salvo boils away the outer armor. The next cripples the engines. The one after that ruptures the frameshift drive.

The Hunter pauses, savoring the moment.

The final plasma barrage incinerates the Misadventure's reactor core. Its safeties fail and the detonation cannot be contained.

In a massive blast, the trust old Krait ruptures in two, split halves shearing away before falling back in, burning from the inside and collapsed against each other. Flames and thick black smoke rise into the night sky.

The Misadventure will never fly again.

Creamy Goodness III
"Please, after you. I got about nine minutes until I can have a drink anyway. I'll just go check the take-out on offer. I'll be back when your rested and ready for me"

JB left Cabin 2 to look for something for Creamy to eat. Most of the people he smuggled in his ship were gang bosses wanting to hide from The Law, crooked politicians wanting to hide from the press or VIPs wanting to hide their sordid affairs from their spouses... the one thing they all had in common was that they were all used to certain comforts in life. The Cuckoo might look like a piece of crap from the outside to distract onlookers, but JB knew how to keep his customers happy.

Even if it's with a kebab.

JB went into Cabin 1. A small cabin that he used for himself most of the time. It was slightly more homely, with his shelves of counterfeit novels, held in place with low-pressure clamps. JB went into the cold storage box and took out a foil-wrapped item he'd planned on eating later. It was some sort of spiced meat wrapped in bread... the closest he had to a kebab.

JB placed it in the food-prepper and left it to warm up whilst he walked back into Cabin 2.

"There's spare clothes in the cupboard there," JB said to Creamy, who was sifting through the variety of tea bags, "Grab what you want and you can get changed in Cabin 1. There's food warming up and there's a steam shower you can use."

JB patted Creamy on the shoulder and walked past him to the bar. Creamy had done well considering he was the client and was pretty beaten up when they found him. JB got to the bar and opened a fresh bottle of rum, made a silent toast to Saint Malverde then slung back a mouthful.
26 May 2021, 10:22pm
Veronica turns her head to look sideways along the deck at the mechanical's severed appendage.

"Well," she says, looking up at Ridge with a smirk, "that's the second time I've saved your life, innit. Not that I'm countin', mind you."

She pushes Ridge to one side and rolls to her feet.

"If they didn't know we were 'ere before, they might do now. Which way?"
26 May 2021, 10:26pm
The ground trembles slightly beneath their feet, the structure shaking ever so slightly. Ridge's system once again chirps.

"Ship destroyed."

Michael look at the message on his wrist readout, too shocked to say anything at first. He blinks, holding it up for Katie to view.

"Not up."
26 May 2021, 10:31pm
The Fer de Lance lands, crushing a piece of wreckage beneath its landing gear. A moment later its ramp descends, The Hunter striding downward, armed and in battle armor, his eyes scanning the horizon.

He advanced toward the gash in the structure's wall.

Shapes, hideous and lumbering, move in the shadows. The Hunter is soon joined by his cohort of biomechanical horrors, minus the one sent to scout ahead.

Its loss is felt in the moment of its death, the tiny, tiny allocation of free will and self-awareness that was not chained to that of its master crying out in a brief moment of digital agony before being silenced.

The Hunter steps through the gash, a gang of horrors at his back.

JB Threepwood
JB patted Creamy on the shoulder and walked past him to the bar. Creamy had done well considering he was the client and was pretty beaten up when they found him. JB got to the bar and opened a fresh bottle of rum, made a silent toast to Saint Malverde then slung back a mouthful.

Oh thank you AB, I still have a few minutes but I think I can let it slide for a bite to eat and a cup of.."

Creamy was glancing over his shoulder talking to JB, but the lust for food and a good cup of tea was distracting Creamy the same was the promise of a cigarette would for a smoker that hadn't had a smoke for over a week, and he couldn't stop himself from rummaging for a good brew.

".. If I can find a good basic tea ba.. Ah Ha! Tebbly Tips! That I recognise, Top draw!"

Putting the box of tea to one side, Creamy tried to unpluck the pressure suit without grabbing the parts that really needed unplucking before giving his attention to Muir.

"As for who these people are Ms Muir, I wish I knew. I sort of know the chap we took this ill-fitting suit from, he took advantage of my generous nature when I was deep in my cups, be their interest shifted from me to a dear friend for some reason, and that's as much as I know. They want the name of the .."

Creamy was going to say lady, be he didn't even want to chance letting a clue slip just in case it somehow got out. ".. person that took Nerys away from Citi Gateway"

Creamy couldn't help glancing at Jacqueline thanks to the similarity to Nerys Creamy saw in the woman's face.

"I'll get myself changed and a bite to eat and then I'll be ready for whatever needs prodding Doctor"

The box of tea bags found there way back into Creamys hands as he waited to see he could be excused.

"Ah, political games again... Perhaps...", Ina replied, turning off her communicator and getting out of the seat. "Screw those guys".

She walked towards the tea maker, took a pair of tea bags from the box that Creamy was holding and then put them inside the machine. Short press on the 'Hot' button had let in just enough water to cover the bags, and then 'Start' button made the glass jar spinning slowly to actually make a tea in zero G.

"Ah, what am I waiting for...", she said quietly, almost like talking to herself, getting to the cupboard with clothes. Leather jacket that JB offered to her wasn't so bad, but her outfit is her outfit. So she took it off and placed amongst the other JB's gangster wardrobe things, getting back to her trusty olive military jacket, that was waiting for her all this time. Also after making sure that the pressure was ok, she removed her helmet.

"Look", Ina stated, facing Creamy, "Then I don't care. If they do what they do usually... What they did to her", she nodded towards Jacqueline, "I won't be hating myself for turning twenty... maybe twenty five of them into a bloody red mess. Actually, I'm going to have a happy sleep today. But you Imps... Phah. You're almost the same to me. With rare exceptions". Saying that, she sounded quite usual and calm, without any strong emotions put into that phrase, like it was the ordinary thing to say.

"Should I say her?.. Yeah. But not when this guy is hanging around... I have to say that she's going with me, not to the S&R office, that can ruin her even further. Well, if she wants to, of course. I'll let her stay in my rented room at Citi until I arrange some proper recovery measures, not that bureaucratic interrogation... Letting her know what's on my mind, in detail, is really a good idea now..."

A signal of tea machine interrupted Ina's thoughts, so she walked back to it and then pressed the 'Cold' button, holding it to fill the jar. Then another button prepared the tea maker for next use, filling the one-use elastic tube with fresh drink and disposing of used bags.

"See how it's done? Phah. Next!", she sent Creamy a wink, grabbed the tube and returned to her seat. "And also... I depressurized their outpost, blasting the airlock door."

Cold and strong tea, without a sugar, without any additional flavours. Her favourite drink. Ina haven't even imagined how much she wanted it all this time, so she stopped drinking only when her tube turned almost empty, despite the size, and she couldn't hide her relieved smile. Cold tea was revitalizing.

"Jacqueline, Creamy, you can start whenever you both are ready... And I'll be remaining here. For... safety", she said it like an announcement, but looking straight into Jacqueline's eyes across the cabin.

"Let's start doing things the right way."
