Elite roleplay: Off station

OFF STATION

Your ship, deep space, anything that is not happening inside the Citi Gateway or Ingaba...

General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

We just emerged from hyperspace and approached the main star, when our ship's sensors picked up the presence of four massive mega ships.

“I already count four mega ships, when we left there were just three. Hopefully the fifth one won't be too long in coming.”

I studied the displays for a moment and the abundant shipping traffic around us.

“You'd think they were planning either an exodus or a war. You rarely see this much traffic, apart from the Booze Cruise to Rackham's Peak...”

I lined up the Gullveig with a group of ships that were apparently mining ore as they flew to a mining area.

“For now, let's hang on to this group. Keep an eye out for any ships heading for the asteroid belt, will you? When we first arrived, a few Type-9s with ore came from that direction and flew to the station. The plan is to get as close to this belt as inconspicuously as possible and then hide there.”

Ideally, we wouldn't be noticed if we were traveling with the traffic, not against it, and blended into the crowd. Once we were in the belt, hopefully without one of the watchful Vipers of the local security forces on our asses, we would make the ship as cold as possible and wait for the Type-7 of Azimuth Logistics to arrive and then track it using the very capable ship's sensors.

“Oh, and let me know if the fifth mega ship should announce itself before then.”

“The… Booze Cruise?”

I had no idea what that was, and it showed inmy tone. If I’d known in the past, it was hardly relevant or important enough to really come back to me easily.

Going by name alone, it did not seem like something to catch my interest, anyway. So I kept most of my attention on the task at hand.

“Watching. But, we will know, when a big ship, arrives… you- know, kind of… obvious. When one does.”

I flicked on some of the comms monitoring displays. I figured that, if the megaship’s arrival were imminent, it would be shortly preceded by a notice to local ships and haulers especially. Doubted we’d get so lucky as to catch another ship heading toward the hidden lab in the asteroid belt, before that T7 showed up, though.

At least, things seemed quiet enough right now, other than the buzzing security chatter. None of which appeared to be referring to our box of a ship. For now…
03 Sep 2024, 1:17pm
“Have you never heard of it? Well, it probably doesn't exist in this form anymore, but until a few years ago a group of merchants regularly organized this Booze Cruise... A huge number of carriers, fully loaded with wine, went to the public holiday at Rackham's Peak, giving many independent pilots the opportunity to sell wine at huge profits. Just think, a single Python's load made around 72 million back then. The good old Python, mind you. I'm not talking about this modern abomination.”

Somehow I could hardly imagine that there was anyone who had never heard of this thing, even though I didn't assume that my companion had ever flown there.

“Well, not that it's really important. But it’s quite pleasant to have a chat or two while you're waiting...”

Slowly, the group of ships we had attached ourselves to moved towards their intended mining area. That took us a good distance away from the station and the mega ships, but I would have preferred to find ships that wanted to mine ores in the asteroid belt as this would have made the perfect cover to approach this region. A single ship flying in isolation would, in my opinion, be more likely to attract the attention of an overzealous local security pilot than a group of haulers.
03 Sep 2024, 1:26pm
"Maybe, I heard, of it... but, do not remember, now. ... probably. Likely, never went there."

I shrugged, though my companion's gaze was directed at the small group we were following along, so the gesture was more for myself.

"Do... not, much care, for money... anyway. Have, too much, of it. You, would not believe, how much plant scans, pay. It, is... ridiculous."

Ridiculous enough that I did not have to worry about paying the crew and maintenance fees for my carrier for a very long time, that was for sure. Still nothing on the comms monitor, so if that big ship was about to show its face... it was not apparent.

I'd probably have made more money at that "booze cruise" by showing up with this body and some... less appropriate wear, than doing mind-numbingly boring hauling, and it would have fit right in with the absurdly extravagant nature of the man behind that outpost. But I kept that thought to myself.
03 Sep 2024, 3:04pm
“Well, I think most of us who have been around for a long time now have enough money. But at the very beginning, it was different.”

Which was actually quite a melancholy train of thought, because somehow almost everything felt different today than it used to. However, this could also be due to the fact that you didn't have any lunatics wielding Helix in your acquaintance back then. Or tried to save the world, because you were more concerned with saving yourself from something or someone. Pirate hunters, for example.

“Roger, roger, old ogre. You can foxtrot me too, my Charlie Romeo.” I mimicked the omnipresent radio. “Jesus, I hope it's soon. That's worse than being the only sober one in a bar.”

I had just said that when another voice came over the radio, this one from a much stronger station.

"Attention everyone, this is a priority broadcast. We have an incoming mega ship of significant size, designation: Somnium Mercatoris. All units are to clear the entry zone immediately. Repeat, clear the entry zone. Security, prepare for arrival. The Consortium ship brings her own security. Ensure all safety protocols are in place. All non-essential units, evacuate the area and maintain a safe distance. Somnium Mercatoris is on final approach. Estimated time of arrival: T-minus 20 minutes. Stand by for further instructions. This is Sagan Command, out."
03 Sep 2024, 3:26pm
"Consortium ship?", I wondered, vaguely recalling something of that name. "Did, you not... mention something, of that name, before?"

Of course it was not just Azimuth and this front of theirs alone. It would have been too easy - or not hard enough - otherwise. I gave off an annoyed sigh and threw a glance at my companion as if to say 'Are you sure about this, and if so, how do you want to proceed'... though I was along for the ride at this point, so I just needed to know if I had to do anything, and what.
03 Sep 2024, 6:01pm
“I have a dim memory of this in connection with our stay at Abel Laboratories. Maybe they stole the Helix stuff from the wrong people?”

Damn, if only I could remember the details. But the term had really only come up in passing. What was common knowledge was that this organization was mainly involved in larger deals and generally didn't care about a simple commander. Perhaps they had somehow been involved in the transaction?

“It's probably a bit too late to lie down and play dead,” I joked, trying to lighten the tense mood a little. “Flying home is always an option, of course, but we didn't come all this way for that. I'd say we abseil away from our group right in the mining area, and while I fly to the edge of the area closest to the asteroid belt, we wait for this mega ship to arrive. If all goes well, the transporter we're looking for should take off from this ship soon afterwards.”
03 Sep 2024, 8:20pm
"Ok... sure. You are the pilot, anyway."

I could also have said 'Do what you think is best', but that would have given my uncertainty away... too much. And I at least did not want to make the person whose flying I depended on even more nervous.

For now, I kept monitoring comms and seeing whether anybody suspected our presence. Or was suspicious of it, rather. And would of course also make sure to warn of anything such, or just make sure we both heard that transmission. One thing was right, and for certain... we hadn't come out here to let some unfavorable odds turn us off. And I was not planning to go back until at least that Helix madness was eradicated... or how far we could follow its trail, anyway.
04 Sep 2024, 11:44am
The group of ships we had joined had just reached the targeted mining area when I deactivated the FSD and set a course that took us at an almost 90 degree angle away from the other ships.

“So far, so good,” I remarked, and accelerated our ship.

In the meantime, the fifth mega ship was already clearly announcing its appearance with the usual space anomalies and all the other ships had left the area where the Somnium Mercatoris would soon appear. It would not be long before the ship had completed its jump.

“Now is the time. Our target is the Type-7 transporter of Azimuth Logistics... Once you've spotted it, we can't lose sight of it.” I said, turning to my companion.
04 Sep 2024, 12:59pm
“Ok… watching.”

I pointed all the scanners at where the megaship was set to emerge, ready to tag the transport for tracking… in our ship’s systems. Though, truthfully, I didn’t know what half of these did, and was just keeping them in passive mode to minimize detection chances. That, and there was one clearly labelled for the purposes of identifying ships.

“Will, tag it, once it appears. Then… following, it, is up to you.”

Not least of which because I had no piloting instruments on my funny chair, which was also a bit of a cause for residual unease. I was still not quite past having some smaller doubts about that woman’s true allegiances, or whether this was all just a ploy to get my trust and close to me on Azimuth’s behalf. The coming hours, perhaps weeks and months, would likely tell, and there were at least signs that it was not the case… seeing how I hadn’t been ratted out when we were by the Musashi just yesterday.

<<Summerland 8b>>

Vasil began reducing super cruise speed as he approached Summerland  8. Two Imperial Eagles from the Patreus Sentinels had been shadowing him for the last five minutes but broke off as the Always Lost passed the orbit of the gas giant’s outer moon.

Sensors spotted few ships lingering around 8b where the battle between Red Jade and Vengerfield’s raiders had taken place, but he did not spot Willow or Maul. That did not mean they were not already here, though. Once he set the navcomp’s target to where the battle had taken place, a message alert blinked on the HUD.

“Commander,” said Jefferson, “system authorities report unusually large combat debris field in the vicinity of Summerland 8b. Caution is advised. Do you wish to use auto pilot for approach?”

“No, I’ll bring it in myself.”

After the three decades on the Always Lost, the COVAS knew Vasil preferred manual approaches. It only ever asked about automated flight when it determined there was a significant risk to the ship. He’d witnessed the battle and knew the debris field was dense but the drifting wreckage must have expanded since then.

“Jefferson, set max power to systems, shield priority.” A little extra protection would not hurt just in case he could not avoid any large debris.

He dropped out of super cruise at what he thought was a safe distance. The debris field had grown larger, ballooning to just under 20km of floating detritus. And right in the center of the cloud sat what was left of the Destinies Jester.

Like a dead whale, its savaged carcass drifted in space, having been gutted by looter and scavenger sharks for anything valuable. All that remained was scrap being slowly cut away by salvagers, who like crabs, came late to the feast to pick clean the Jester's bones.

Kasumi Goto“Will, tag it, once it appears. Then… following, it, is up to you.”

It wasn't long before the Somnium Mercatoris arrived in the system, a truly beautiful mega ship of an older design, painted an almost imperial, elegant white. Its powerful engines lit up once more in fiery red before they went out completely. The ship had arrived.

There was an immediate flurry of activity around the newcomer. The first freighters coming from the other mega ships slowly approached the large ship, the Vipers of the local security forces approached faster but then paused at a proper distance, while the security forces launched from the ship itself were already rushing towards them.

“Precise as clockwork,” I commented. “The ship seems to be well commanded.”

Somnium Mercatoris, welcome to Thor Biometrics. Attention! This is a high priority announcement for all ships. Begin your loading operations immediately. The entire area is to be cleared in four hours at the latest. This is Sagan Station, over.

A few minutes later, the first freighters lifted off from the Somnium Mercatoris, most of them heading for Sagan Research Center. A few also headed for neighboring mega ships, while a single ship broke away from all the others and set a course for the asteroid belt.

"Well, I guess, that is our ship.", I remarked, upon seeing the lone flicker of thrusters moving away from everything else.

As a precaution, I pointed the scanners at it anyway, and let them do their work. Sure enough, it was identified as our transport, so I tagged it on the main display to highlight it. Now... we just needed to stay within range to it, but not close enough that its own sensors picked our ship up. And 'we', it was really just her, because I had little to do with piloting the ship. My task for the moment was pretty much done, aside from just looking at sensor displays for the Azimuth facility... and getting squished into the seat upon acceleration.
04 Sep 2024, 6:26pm
“Looks like our information was correct so far,” I said as I let the computer calculate a course that would take us sideways to the marked transporter to stay out of detection range of the other ships.

As it turned out, we didn't even need to fly at full thrust because the tagged transporter was flying at roughly a right angle to our current course. To be on the safe side, I deactivated our shields to further reduce the heat signature of our ship.

“The pursuit will take some time, our target is much slower than we are and we must not get too close. If all else fails... somewhere on your console is a button with a crossed-out loudspeaker symbol that we can use to shut down radio communications within a radius of about 6km. But that's only for emergencies - because even the absence of signals can arouse suspicion.”
04 Sep 2024, 8:09pm
"Ok. Will, keep it... in mind."

I spent my time locating said button so I knew where it was, in case it turned out to be necessary, then... continued waiting. Until we were within range to detect that facility and break off from pursuing the transport - though it was more like leisurely driving alongside it, suggesting that the brick's engines had not been upgraded via engineering - I didn't really have anything to do. The less mature part of my brain suggested it was quite boring, in fact.
