Elite roleplay: Off station

OFF STATION

Your ship, deep space, anything that is not happening inside the Citi Gateway or Ingaba...

General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

"Neither am I," she tells Des Cartes. "I saw the alert, and honestly saw my way out of the hospital. Something I could do, help others, and not feel sorry for myself. There are too many that need help," she nods. "But I figure to start somewhere, and a xeno attack seems a no-brainer. No politics."

She smiles, "I'm good, and I'm ready. This perfect specimen of no-grav acclimation- this is a vacation from the weight of life itself compared to sitting on Citi." She winks.
29 Sep 2021, 11:17am
' vacation from the weight of life itself compared to sitting on Citi' Davenport had put into words more or less what I had been feeling. It had felt as if life was bearing down too heavily of late.

"I need the same sort of break." I said. It felt like an inadequate reply. She had somehow looked into my mind and started to lift the load. "Thank you Davenport."

I almost blushed. It was a ridiculous over-reaction. I stood and zipped up my suit. "OK , lets go. We'll be there in no time".

Hurrying back to the flight deck to cover my embarrassment I felt a lot happier.

"OK Sam, let's go.
29 Sep 2021, 6:05pm
Once alone, August slides back on her helmet, and straps herself back in. "It feels nice to be able to lift take care of my own again. You don't feel useless until you can't wipe your own ass because your arm is too heavy," she says without realizing her helmet is still "hot mic"-ing her. "Guess dad was right- I was born for the black."

Descartes"Take it easy for ten minutes, I'm going to check on our passenger."

"Sure thing, I'll scoop this star a bit then I'll cruise towards the next system."

As Descartes walked away to check on our passenger, I guided the ship as softly as I could while scooping fuel and watching our heat levels.

She looks bothered by something, maybe after we drop off Davenport and we are just sailing into the black in Des' Anaconda she'll open up more.

The heads up display read, "2 new contacts."

Checking the I.D.'s and orbiting the star one more time I got a scan on one of the ships. Wing of 2 System Security.

Good, We're still flying unnoticed and alone.

I aligned the ship onto our next star system, we had a full tank of fuel and we were alone. I relaxed in my chair loosened the straps on the five point a bit and reclined. Just as I leaned back Descartes came walking onto the flight deck.

"Okay Sam, let's go."

I straightened back up in my chair, tightened the straps back down and engaged the FSD.

The next system was busy, contacts dropping in and out.

Perfect, a busy system like this unless someone is specifically looking for this specific ship, they won't notice us.

Pitching and rolling the ship, as gently as I could in supercruise, I aligned with our next system.

"So I take it our passenger is doing alright in zero G? Just a few more jumps and we'll be there. Want me to head straight to your Conda when we arrive? Prep it for launch, fuel up and bring our things along? I realize I didn't pack a spare flight suit so I'm gonna order one and have it sent to the docks along with food stuffs and the usual supplies for a long journey. Is there anything you need for the trip?"

Before I could answer Davenport's voice drifted quietly over the comms.

'It feels nice to be able to take care of my own again. don't feel useless until you can't wipe your own ass because your arm is too heavy, Guess dad was right- I was born for the black'

I looked over at Sam, remembering him 'out of it', wet dirty and bloody on his bunk. He probably didn't realise that I'd cleaned him up a couple of times before he was able to get to the bathroom. Thinking back, I'd definitely dragged him out of the med-center far too soon. I smiled picturing myself wearing my helmet at the time for fresh air - very unprofessional.

I smiled again, feeling more relaxed. "Yes, she looks fine. Talking of a rescue mission. Sounds like a good idea."

I started looking for more information on Galnet and the news feeds,

"We can take off as soon as the ships ready and cleared. Nothing that needs my attention or presence at Jameson. I'm a free agent." Realising the irony that Sam was wanted.
30 Sep 2021, 2:54pm
Again the ship leapt into hyperspace. The stars and nebulas passing, then suddenly the ship slowed to cruising speed. A large blue/white star illuminated the flight deck.

"Sounds good. A rescue mission huh? You know I am on board with helping people when I can. Do you want to check it out? Or just head out into the black? And for that matter, did you have an idea of which way to go?"

The blue white star gave a new perspective to the flight deck. As I looked over at Descartes in the bright blue light. Something was different, she seemed more at peace, as if the blue white star gave off a refreshing aura. It was beautiful, she was beautiful.

Catching myself staring for an awkward amount of time, I shifted in my chair and guided the ship to the next jump point

"Ahem, just a couple of jumps left. Then we'll be seeing Jameson Memorial."

Trying to ignore that I was just staring at Descartes in her beauty I stared forward and engaged the FSD.
01 Oct 2021, 2:24pm
The FSD had kicked in and out again before I could answer - only a little breathless.

"One more jump." I told Ms Davenport over the comms. "Low threat in Shinrarta Dezhra."

Then, to Sam: "I haven't found any active rescue missions. I was thinking of making a trip to the Pleiades first. Not too far, around ten jumps. Still goid activity out there, so maybe rescue missions. Most of the region has probably been explored. Should be lots to see though."

We jumped again into very heavy traffic. I was thinking more rationally now. There was always the possibility of interdiction, but usually when hauling valuable cargo worth pirating. Sam was worth one-fifty million. I didn't know enough about August Davenport. Blunt but true. The obvious danger for Sam was from opportunists when docked somewhere. Best not to hang around on Jameson.

"Arrange for me to collect the supplies from the dock gates. We don't want to risk any undesirables having an excuse to visit the ship. Don't let anyone board but me. I'll personally oversee everything put though all the scanners I can find."

I half-floated back to my quarters, peeling off my Remlock suit on the way, ready to deposit it in the dry-cleaner and check on our passenger again before landing.

"You might like to turn off your mic when thinking aloud." I said to her, smiling as I dressed in a jumpsuit. "OK with getting off the same way we got on? Anything you need before we land?"

"Alright, I'll just keep an eye out on the boards and I'll message you if I find anything worth checking out, and more importantly if our friend Kohatu makes a visit."

As Descartes left to help our passenger off the ship I hauled for landing clearance at Jameson Memorial.

"You are cleared to land commander, please make your way to docking bay 48."

Guiding the ship through the mail slot I noticed many ships in que to leave, and twice as many outside waiting to come in.

Jameson is busy these days.

I put the ship down as gently as I could , but we still landed with a thud. I sent out my orders and put in the special instructions to leave the boxes of supplies at the docking bay doors. Ordered myself a new suit and one, three for Descartes. Not knowing her size I ordered my best guess and then one size up and smaller. Relaxing back in my chair I scanned the message boards and mission boards for anything interesting.
02 Oct 2021, 7:26pm
August unbuckles herself from the bed, and leans herself against the wall, in anticipation for needing up getting up, but with a 'damn it, I can get at least this far on my own' attitude as she waits for Des Cartes to do the pilot thing.
03 Oct 2021, 12:28pm
We were not held in a que for too long. I felt the ship touch down, the mag-locks and restraints thudding into place. The damage inflicted by an unsecured vessel would be monstrous and expensive. The inertia of a humble 25t sidewinder would wreak havoc. A 400t Anaconda....

August Davenport was sitting up, ready to go. I lifted her into my arms, her face a few inches from my own. I felt a little, 'up close and personal', but it was surely better than carrying her on my back like a rucksack.

"Mind your elbows." I smiled. " This corridor's a bit narrow" She almost floated down onto her chair in the hold. "I'm heading for the dock gates, only here to transfer to another ship and re-supply." I said as I removed the straps holding the chair tightly to the deck. "Are you Ok from there?"
03 Oct 2021, 8:45pm
I knock my elbow once, just as she warms me. It definitely smarts, but I only chuckle at the situation.

"Yeah," I tell Des Cartes once I'm down in my chair. "I'm basically doing the same. Jameson Memorial isn't the sort of place to hang out. Great to outfit and resupply. Too many wild spacers for my like."

I power up the chair with the press of a button on its arm console, the smile to Des Cartes. "You're a good sort, I think. You'll find your own way. You see a Dolphin in iridescence, or a Cutter in azure, be sure to give a wing rock or a hail."

I give the Des Cartes and her ship a last look and smile before heading off the docking bay and into the melee of the station's docking section.
04 Oct 2021, 2:12am
The Anaconda was cold, I had forgotten how cold this large a ship could get. Closing my duster around my self I made my way to the flight deck. The ship was outfitted for exploration: an SRV and it's vehicle bay, all the necessary scanners, cargo bays, only one cabin.

Makes sense, Descartes said she usually flies alone.

I put Descartes' bag in the cabin and brought mine with me to the flight deck. I could secure it up there. Taking a long sigh and taking in the beautiful sight of her flight deck the Anaconda welcomed me with an icy interior. Booting up the most basic of systems, and the heater I did my flight checks.

All looks good, now let's see if anyone has made their presence known and is actively looking for me.

I messaged the dragoons, nothing but rumors and hear say of my whereabouts.

Checking my personal messages, nothing.

I shot off a message to Descartes,

"Ship is prepped to go, no one seems to have followed us here. Orders are in, and the boxes of cargo in will be waiting for you outside the gates on a lift truck. Call me on the ship so I know it's you and I'll lower the cargo hatch."

Then suddenly a new message, unknown sender.

"Hey there bud, we need to have a chat.

-K"

Wow, subtle

I didn't answer, I figured I'd show Descartes and see what she thinks of it. To me it's obviously bait. I respond, he gets my location and boom, we get cornered again. Not falling for it.

Scrolling the mission boards again for any rescue missions I sat back in the pilots chair and put on a sweet operetta to drown out the beeping and low hum of the station.

Davenport wasn't hanging around. We said our goodbyes and she was off. In different circumstances it might have been interesting to get to know more about her story.

Sam had bought enough stores for a very long voyage into nowhere. It would take an age to unload everything, scan it, reload it, get it to the ship and get it stashed in the right order. The Anaconda was the closest thing I had to a permanent home so it already had most of the personal things I would need, the 'suits Sam had bought for me were thoughtful but unnecessary - I would keep that to myself.

I would have to re-think the single cabin. Plenty of space to get another one organised. Maybe use my ad-hoc gym to set up a bunk and some private space for Sam. We could share what passed as 'the bathroom'.

The 'Red Lotus' - now black - was rather battered. But looks aren't everything. It's new nose looked out of place - I never got used to the length of the ship and still bumped into things from time to time: Asteroids when mining, an occasional landing pad. Everything mechanical was as good as new. Sam lowered the cargo hatch for me and with his help we began the long process of unloading the truck, again, and carrying everything onto the ship. It would all have to be carefully stowed. I tried to get a drinkable coffee, (my one occasional vice) from the 'chef (3d food printer) without success. It would need to be thoroughly cleaned before we were too far into the first flight. I would ditch all the old food cartridges at the same time.

Everything felt felt very domestic - far from problems like Kohatu. Half a lifetime from red dwarfs, super-massive black holes, nebulea and alien-life forms.

At last everything was aboard.

"Hey there bud, we need to have a chat." Sam showed me the message he'd received from 'K'

I'm sure he knows exactly where we both are Sam. Maybe he wants to make a deal with you. I suggest you ignore it. That's what I would do. Right now I need to shower, meditate and get dressed - in that order, so give me some time, unless there's an emergency."

A couple of minutes minutes into what was probably my only decent shower for some time, I recalled what had happened the last time I asked Sam to give me some time to myself: He was visited by some of Kohatu's thugs and ended up killing them!

Then, for no apparent reason, I thought about sharing a shower with him. That cut short my relaxation. I hurriedly dried, dressed, and joined him on the flight deck.

As Descartes left to shower and meditate I scanned the mission boards again. A few massacre pirates from this or that mafia, a couple of salvage missions, courier missions... nothing interesting.

Maybe I'll show Descartes the salvage missions, but also she might want to just put space behind us and blank black in front of us.

With the heat of the ship running and the interior heat normal I doffed my duster and placed it on my bag, only my flight suit, (which I had unzipped partially to relieve some of the heat), remained. I placed my things in the storage closet on the flight deck.

I brought my hammock, I could hang it here and there (Looking in two spots of the flight deck suitable to hang a hammock)

I could bunk with Descartes maybe....

As the thought entered my mind, Descartes came walking fast onto the flight deck. Her hair was wet and she looked stressed. Not the look of someone who had just finished meditating.

"Back so soon? (I smiled) Thought you were gonna meditate, did you even finish your shower? Your hair is still wet. Everything good? I've got no emergencies here. We're ready to go, but you can relax a bit before we go out into the black. I've got some friends from the dragoons here at the station and they offered to watch the docks for any unwanted visitors. (chuckling, and placing a hand on her shoulder) Sometimes it's nice to have friends in such a busy port."

I walked over to the pilot's chair and put on some relaxing Japanese string and woodwinds.

"Seriously Des. Can I call you Des? We have a bit of time for rest and relaxation. Take a beat, I'll be up here if you need me."

Turning back to Descartes I smiled and held out one of the bags of instant coffee I had bought from the dragoons.

"Here I saw you tried to make coffee on the food printer earlier."
06 Oct 2021, 7:12pm
"It needs a clean. Thankyou, that was very thoughtful, and yes, you can call me Des.."

I got comfortable in the pilots seat. Not surprisingly, after countless hours of constant use, it moulded itself to my shape perfectly. The harness was redesigned to fit me, but would do Sam an injury if he tried to use it!

"So, would there be any more questions?" I turned to him and smiled.

I pulled a control panel in front of me and pulled up a star chart.

"We'll have all the time in the Galaxy after a few jumps. I can meditate then. Nothing stopping us from leaving more or less right away."

I noticed Sam's gear protruding from one of the lockers.

"The second cabin is currently used as my gym. Can you sort the bunk out and stow your things there? I kinda' like to keep the flight deck clear of clutter."

It was an understatement. I hate clutter, fastidious about keeping the flight deck clean, almost to the point of obsession. It was something Sam would have to get used to. If not, things would be very difficult on a long flight.

"Rumour 'round the dock gates suggest it's worth visiting the 'NGC 2632 sector', around 900ly - a reasonable distance to make a start. Looking too dangerous around 'Delphi' my first idea. What do you think?"
