Elite roleplay: Off station

OFF STATION

Your ship, deep space, anything that is not happening inside the Citi Gateway or Ingaba...

General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

Mhera fumbled with the clip, finally inserting it into the weapon. She nodded, crouching behind a table. Her hands still shaking in the dim red glow of the emergency lighting. There was a loud hollow bang, then the sound of atmosphere pressurizing. In the distance she heard whooping and calls but everything was indistinct. No doubt trying to intimidate them. She closed her eyes for a moment and thought about her family. Her mother and her father. He brother and her best friend. If she came out of this alive.....

"Luke." she wispered in a cracked voice. "What if they decide to blow us up?"
14 Jun 2017, 8:38pm
"Just hide your gun either on you or nearby for now," Luke said, signalling Mhera to stand up again as he found a place near the entrance to stash his own and stand unassumedly. His heart was pounding loud enough for him to hear it in his ears, and he took some well practiced, controlled, deep breaths to slow it down and stay in control.

"But bare in mind if they think you're a threat, they'll take action." He added, hoping to get his point across without scaring her any more than she already was, "So remember where you put it, but don't look at it, or near it."

He pondered her question for a moment then concluded, "Well... If they do that I say take as many of them with us as possible," He reached up and tapped the side of his nose with his finger, "But I made preparations just in case so if I disappear, hold tight."
14 Jun 2017, 9:49pm
"What are you go-" she started to say, but was interrupted by a loud banging noise issuing from the closed door. On the other side she heard a man say something to the effects of them being hold up in there. Quickly, she slipped the weapon into her pants, when she realized that she was wearing a Remlock, and it had no place to conceal a weapon. In desperation she tossed it to Luke, stood and took a step to the side.

As she did so, a pair of hands had broken through a slit in the door and was now starting to pull the two haves apart.

Luke instinctively caught the weapon, and a split second later realised just what had happened.

Unfortunately the doors were being peeled open as the boarders struggled to gain access. Now it was his turn to panic as the doors inched wider apart and he was stood there, armed, as an unknown number of assailants forced their way into the bay they were waiting in.

And Luke was just stood there looking at the gun, then to Mhera, then the hands protuding through the doorway, and back to the gun.

*Shit...*
15 Jun 2017, 4:38pm
There was more whooping and jeering from the rowdy bunch of men. Hands worked at the door finally prying it open with a screech of metal punctuating the air. A lightly armored man stepped in holding a laz-gun in one hand, and shining a torch with the other.

"Well, lookie 'ere! Found two of 'em!" he said with guffaw. "Put yer 'and's against da wall! Turn slow an' easy..."

another man stepped into the small sleeping quarters. "Boss, we found two here." There was a static reply. "Found a compartment full of weird shit. Machines of some sort." There was a loud bang and laughter over the same com. "Don't hold up well to a crow bar!"

Mhera groaned as she turned to face the wall placing her hands on it. All that scientific equipment...Brutes.
15 Jun 2017, 11:50pm
Luke followed suit, holding the gun over his head by the barrel to signify he had no intentions of using it. He wanted this resolved peacefully, but he was also beginning to get the impression that wasn't going to happen. Hearing the guffaws from the comms as they smashed up whatever they could find was grating on him. He was no scientist himself but he did have a deep respect for the field, and loathed those who didn't show it the respect it deserved.

"Nice to meet you at last chaps," he said with a sarcastic smile. "Now, what can I do for you?"

Sydney sits uncomfortably silent as she stares at her comms panel, internally speculating how much longer she might have to wait for word from Blake, or the man Marcus introduced her to briefly, Phisto. Her attention to the fact nothing had come her way yet seemed to disallow time to move beyond a blistering crawl. With a heavy sigh she rolls her head to the left, focusing momentarily on her nav panel. One jump to Citi, or a slew of jumps back to Achenar, these were her choices.

Surely if someone had heard from her old friend there she would have known by now, so what good would it be for her to return from where he went missing? The word is nobody has seen Marcus there in ages, or if they had, they were keeping a disciplined military-minded mouth shut on the topic.

'Maybe he's actually dead?' She thought again for the thousandth time, but the likelihood of something so permanent didn't seem to resonate with her, especially considering the bargaining chips that Marcus left onboard his ship in Blake's charge. If he hadn't been blown to bits in a fiery spectacle, it meant he had time to try and broker some sort of deal; at the very least, buying him some latitude with the unquestionably desirable contents aboard the Virtue. Probably best as few people as possible learn that Blake, however, had an unfortunate run in with some authoritarian types that thought it was best he part with his hold. If Marcus had decided to leverage his life with his mysterious fortune, he might just end up dead anyway.

Sydney let's out another heavy breath, she stiffens her body as if preparing to stand when a prompt echoes across the bridge, it was in fact a comms request- from Blake.

'Was beginning to assume the worst Blake, I actually considered turning around and taking a more diplomatic approach to all this with some family acquaintances back home. What have you got for me?' She riddles off very matter of factly.

'I don't see your friends back home doing much for Marcus Sydney. He's not exactly a coveted asset of the Empire these days. Then again, nobody here seems to be too concerned either. I did manage to get some information from the manifests here- there's no record of any casualties the day of his little run in with that Omega broad. It does, however, cite some hangar infractions by a reckless Taipan operator that haven't been sorted yet. If I had to guess he made it out in one piece anyway.'

'You're sure it wasn't many?' She responds cynically.

'No... I really don't think so...' Blake takes a pause as he cues up the internal video capture from the day in question, reviewing it once again aboard the Virtue.

'...from the archived terminal feeds it looks as though he got caught in the mail slot maybe? But the image is pretty obstructed from any decent angle. Lot of traffic moving in and out, my guess is he slipped out in the mix... I just don't get it though. Where could he possibly have gone in a Taipan from there? From the looks of it there was a fair amount of system security waiting for his exit as well. He's a surly pilot, but he's no magician.'

Sydney remains silent on the other end of the line. She goes to speak, hesitating for a beat just before continuing.

'Any visible ID plates on those ships coming and going?'

'Nothing I can get my eyes on here Syd, I'm sure there's a log somewhere in this mess articulating who's who, but it's nothing they're going to hand over to me willingly. I could try a more aggressive means of procuring that intel if you like- heads up though, I'll be a sitting duck if I do. The Virtue's not going anywhere safely for a spell.' Blake murmurs with an err of defeat.

Sydney drops her head, moaning like a melodramatic teenager. 'Oh my god this is ****ing obnoxious. We're going to have to pay for information again, aren't we? I bet that Mary woman is waiting for us right now, just waiting patiently for us to show up with a check.'

Sydney hated buying her way out of anything, her character saw it as a cop out, a weak move, one practiced by the entitled and self proclaimed important types that couldn't be any more insignificant to her. If she couldn't have it by her own measure or sharp candor, then she obviously didn't really want it, or at least this was the conviction she had convinced herself to abide by.

'Money talks Syd.' Blake squawks through the comms.

'Yeah... and it never shuts up either.' She replies.

The pirate sneered behind his opaque Remlock mask as he listened to Luke's greeting.

"Well. You can drop that gun. I don't like seein' in yer hand like that." he said in low growl as dim red light reflected off the shiny helmet.

Another member of the boarding party, A tall weedy man, grabbed Mhera roughly and twisted her arms behind her back. She gave a small squeal of pain as the man roughly bound the hands together and then forced her face first into the deck plating.

Another individual approached Luke. "Hand's behind your back. If you cause trouble, I'll space ya here and now." Her voice was scratchy but keen.
21 Jun 2017, 5:57pm
Luke flinched and made a move towards Mhera as she yelped in pain, freezing after one step as he took stock of the situation.

*Three guys here, one on comms... Probably another one or two with him.*

It was basically one against maybe six, then there was probably still people at the helm of the vessels hovering around outside. Those odds didn't sit well with him at all. Defeated, he dropped the gun to the floor with a thud and held his arms out either side of him.

"Don't suppose you ever fancy explaining what you want?" He said with a hint of anger lacing his voice, "Not that I'm wanting to rush you or anything."
21 Jun 2017, 6:19pm
The woman grabbed Luke's arms and roughly tied them behind his back. She kicked him in the space behind the knees to knock him to the floor.

The pirate whom spoke earlier continued. "I think it's pretty obvious..." as he said that the ship's lighting flickered to a steady glow. Off in the engine room the power plant whirred to life. The ship listed as it turned and started accelerating. Moments later that strange sensation of being stretched washed over Mhera as the frame-shift drive spooled up. A few moments later the whirling noise of which space encompassed the ship with a sudden deceleration pulling at her gut.
21 Jun 2017, 6:39pm
Luke tightened his fists as hard as he could as the woman tied is arms. He let out a small grimace as his knees collided onto the hard floor. Despite this, he adamantly stayed upright, until the ship listed and he lost his balance, bruising his arm and side in the process.

"You want a science ship?" He snarked, "Planning on selling black market beakers or something?"
21 Jun 2017, 6:54pm
The apparent leader of the small group in the room laughed again.

"Science ship?" he belted out a mighty guffaw. "If we had but known...." He shifted his weight and held onto the threashold for support as the ship swung about. "It matters not if this ship was simply a cargo transport. Out here, ships are hard to find. Quite a market for them. Both intact or dismantled." He laughed again and pointed the gun at Luke's head.

"As for the existing crew. Well, there is always a need for unblemished excavators." He shrug again. The ship banked yet again.

Mhera whimpered. The woman laughed at her distress. "Looks like this one is a bit soft. I doubt she will last a week!"
21 Jun 2017, 7:17pm
"Ah... So basically you're just slavers who dabble in scavenging, or the other way around." Luke grumped, "Whatever pays the bills I guess."

He shifted his weight to get a bit more comfortable on the floor, no easy task given the hardness and the fact his arms were bound. But he managed to get himself sat upright nonetheless. From here he had a clear view of Mhera, and a fresh wave of guilt washed over him and he lowered his gaze to the floor.

*Better hope she does last.* He thought angrily, plotting a revenge he wasn't fully confident he'd be able to exact.
21 Jun 2017, 8:39pm
"When you put it that way..." He said sarcastically. "But I like to think we are entrepreneurs who are filling a need in a niche market."

Mhera whimpered again as she felt gravity tug at her. Soon, she felt the retro-boosters kick in and she saw the man sway back holding onto the door for support. The woman by Luke swayed a bit holding her balance, but the third man lost balance and fell over. There was much laughing at his pain.

"Well, it looks like your new life is just around the corner." the man said with a dark chuckle.
21 Jun 2017, 9:18pm
*One jump. Still in the Pleiades.* Luke thought, gritting his teeth. He'd been building up his courage, and now was the time to act. Tightening his fists was supposed to enlargen the muscles in his lower arms, meaning while they were relaxed, the bindings should be loose enough to slip off.

Being skinny as he was, and not much muscle mass to extend, all it had accomplished was to leave his wrists red raw with friction as he tried to subtly slide them out.

Making a mental note to delete that particular help book from his pad, he changed tact.

"Tell you what. Let us go, keep the ship, and I'll come back with a fleet of them to give you," He said as confidently as he could muster. "Or, keep us trapped and the company that owns this vessel will track it, and arrive with a fleet of their own."
