Elite roleplay: Off station

OFF STATION

Your ship, deep space, anything that is not happening inside the Citi Gateway or Ingaba...

General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

Luke leaned back against the cool metal wall, having removed his helmet to get some air.

*There's something she isn't telling me* he thought to himself. As she disappeared into her quarters, he approached the door and raised his hand to knock. Tempted to try and her to talk about it, whatever it was. But after a bit of thought, he figured he'd likely find himself on the wrong side of an airlock if he pressed the matter. Better to let her come out of her shell in her own time.

With that he let out a sigh, lowered his hand, and made his way to the cockpit, tucking his helmet under his arm. As he sat down and powered up the ship for takeoff, he plotted the course to Merope. Then he flicked the intercom on.

"Just to let you know, we're about to take off so careful in case things get bumpy," he said quietly. He was about to turn it off again, not anticipating a response but instead added, "Once we reach the main star, I'll cook us something. If you don't want to come out and join me, I'll leave it covered up and keep it warm for you."

With that, he flicked it off again, waited thirty seconds to give Mhera a chance to brace herself, then lifted off. Within moments, the familiar swirl of colours filled the cockpit as they rocketed through Witchspace.
23 Mar 2017, 1:12pm
Mhera felt the ship slip into Which-space. In her hands she held a data-pad.

Not the message I wanted to send my dear Friend....

She sat pensively, going over the events earlier that day while simultaneously going through her memories. It was a harrowing experience feeling alone and abandoned....

Mhera knitted her eyebrows together. But I wasn't alone. I wasn't abandoned. Luke was there the whole time. Logically she knew she had seriously over reacted. But emotionally.

She was embarrassed, and now shame was oozing its nasty presence in.

I'll wait until we reach the system, then I'll go apologize.
23 Mar 2017, 2:52pm
Luke decided to take his time getting to Merope. It was only a few jumps but he'd opted to refuel at each available star, making sure to fire off the ADS each time and occasionally nip over to a planet of interest and get a basic surface scan of it. At least Mhera would have a lot of data to drop off at her contractors which should appease them... Hopefully. Plus it gave her all the timeshe should need to cool off.

They were one jump away, and as the Fuel Scoop thunked and declared its completion, he turned the DBX towards Merope and spooled up the FSD.

"Frame Shift Drive, Charging" came the cool, synthetic female voice. "4...3...2...1...". Then the familiar colours of Witchspace once again, surrounded him and the vessel. So he clicked on the intercom to let Mhera know they were arriving in system.

"Hey Mhera, just so you know, this is the last... Wait..." A message popped up in the corner of his screen he'd never seen before.

WARNING HYPERSPACE CONDUIT UNSTABLE

The ship began... Wobbling? In Witchspace? Was that really possible?? He didn't mean to, but in his nervousness and excitement, he shouted. Not an angry shout, but unnecessary nonetheless.

"Mhera!! Cockpit! Now!!" He basically demanded, "Sorry... You'll want to see this!!!"
24 Mar 2017, 3:24pm
"What the?" Mhera felt an unusual sensation. Something she hadn't expected. The ship was doing something odd right under her feet. It felt like she was being pulled with it, but with some strange delay. Like she was out of sync with what was going on around her.

Putting aside her self pity, she made her way clumsily to the cockpit. She had been buffeted about a bit and saw that warning about the hyperspace conduit being unstable.

She managed to strap herself into the copilots seat.

"That's... not normal."
26 Mar 2017, 12:44pm
"Nope!!!" Luke yelled, half frightened, half excited, clicking his Remlock Helmet back on hurriedly. It was... So far.... Just like the GalNet Vids.

The ship finally burst from Witchspace, spinning wildly and he instinctively wrestled the controls to stop the hurtling, to no avail as all the lights in the vessel flickered off. Power was down, but life support seemed to remain on, or perhaps even the timer was disabled.

Besides that, a complete and eerie silence filled the canopy as Luke removed his harness and floated as close to the canopy as possible, reaching a hand out to Mhera as invitation to join him.

"Come... Watch." He said with a grin on his face through his clear visor.
27 Mar 2017, 2:02pm
Mhera felt unnerved. What was worse, was how Luke was handling this. It was as if he knew everything would be okay. But how did he really know?

Now he unstrapped himself?

"Luke! If something were to happen to you. I can't pilot this thing! You told me that you wouldn't do anything to put me or this ship in harms way!"

This was not her day.
27 Mar 2017, 3:30pm
"You've seen the clips right?" Luke asked Mhera calmly. "Power is out, we're adrift between systems and...." A strange beeping and whirring noise cut him off.

"I can either panic, or enjoy this with someone special." He held his hand out in invitation. "I did make a promise, I'm going to keep that promise. Nothing has happened yet, and I'll bet my entire fleet of ships that nothing will happen."

Inside, he was terrified. He expected to just get a big flash of green light then nothing, but there was a chance... A chance.... He and Mhera were about to become the first victims of a full blown interspecies war.

However, externally, he kept his appearance excited and interested.

"Besides... One of the first things I said to you was that I was coming out here to see them first hand.... So, take mine, and I'll keep all those promises."
27 Mar 2017, 3:35pm
Mhera saw Luke's mouth flapping, but she didn't hear a thing.

Every system on the ship has lost power. The comms were down. A harrowing thought raced through her head. They only had so much oxygen...

If ship systems aren't restored.......

She tapped her helmet, indicating she couldn't hear him.

Then turning to her dead panel, in a futile attempt to gather any kind of data, she shook her head.
27 Mar 2017, 11:29pm
Staring blankly at Mhera as the whirring got louder, Luke wondered why she wasn't responding and instead tapped her helmet. Then it dawned on him and his face turned bright red. Power was out, comms required power, ergo comms were down...

*What a pleb* He thought to himself, in a rush now both to not miss anything, and encourage Mhera to join in his excitement. *To hell with it... The ship's airtight right???*

With that, he took a deep breath, shut his eyes, and pulled off his Remlock helmet and prayed.... A moment later he opened his eyes... Not dead. Although the recycler was off, there was still plenty of air held within the ship itself to keep them alive.

He nodded at Mhera, encouraging her to do the same, and held his hand back out in invitation with a smile.
31 Mar 2017, 2:22pm
Mhera couldn't identify her feelings. Fear, excitement, curiosity, all a blur.

She saw Luke extend his hand.

What an odd gesture?

It took her a moment to realize that this wasn't any kind of experience for Luke. This was intimate. She thought back to the conversation she had with Luke concerning this expedition. There was so much more here. She wasn't sure, now that the opportunity had presented itself how she was going to handle it.

She took the hand.
04 Apr 2017, 7:05pm
Taking Mheras hand, Luke pulled her towards the canopy until she was as close to it as he was and craned his neck in an effort to catch a glimpse of the party (or parties) responsible for pulling them out of Witchspace as soon as possible. Perhaps even witnessing it make its own exit from... Wherever it comes from...

He was, admittedly, a little disappointed she hadn't followed suit with her helmet, but it quickly faded as he used the dashboard to push up closer to the top of the canopy in an attempt to look behind them. A strange green glow emanated from the point where the window met the steel, in the same way the light from a sun glows over the horizon. But it only lasted a short while as it grew brighter then sharply dropped as it was replaced by the object, that served as its source, whizzed overhead as though passing them before slowly turning to face them again.

Lukes head followed its every move in terrified amazement, but the smile never left his face as he dropped down back next to Mhera, and placed a hand on her shoulder.
13 Apr 2017, 4:35pm
Mhera was a mix of emotions. Trepidation, from the unknown. A bit unnerved by the hand holding. She thought Luke was moving too fast.

He really is, handsy she though.

But mostly annoyed. There was no power. Nothing to run her scientific apparatus. She couldn't even record the event. No one would believe her. Her whole career was now on the fast track to the un-creditable. She would have to make some justification, but with nothing in hand to offer to the science gods, she would become the sacrifice.

How stupid I've been....
18 Apr 2017, 11:29am
Everything else was muted around him. All that mattered to Luke now was the strange flowery shaped vessel coming to a halt in front of him. Although his hand was still resting on Mheras shoulder, he'd all but forgotten about her presence. Some, distant part of his brain hoping she was as amazed as he was.

His Remlock helmet listed lazily in front of him, and he grabbed it to avoid it obscuring his vision further. The ship started glowing brighter and brighter until the entire canopy was filled with the blindingly green aura. So bright he was forced to squint, not wanting to close his eyes lest he miss something, no matter how small or insignificant.

The sight had Luke doing a very good impression of a tunnel, with his jaw practically at his feet.
21 Apr 2017, 10:14am
Despite her feelings, the entire affair was surreal. Her hand gave Luke’s a small squeeze as the giant flower shaped object slowly descended and rotated to face them. Since the thing was symmetrical, front to back, side to side and vertically she was not sure it had any discernible front.

Mhera’s head slightly canted as the ship was bathed in a wash of golden mote-like light that suddenly issued from the object.

ionizing radiation? If it’s gamma… She become more concerned. If it were, they could be in serious trouble.

But there was nothing she, or Luke could do in the moment. Then it struck her. What if the ship’s systems fail to reboot after this thing leaves. Assume it does. Or what if it becomes hostile?
23 Apr 2017, 7:47pm
As quickly as it started, it was over. The Alien Vessel switched off its scanner, or whatever it was, and left Luke and Mhera in relative darkness once more.

As though well practiced, Luke instantly patted Mhera on the shouler and signalled her to take her seat while he did the same. Knowing full well the GalNet vids had the pilots equipment switch back on just as the mysterious vessel was leaving, he was keen to avoid injury to both himself and his passenger, or employer? Depends who you ask he supposed. Either way, once the electrics came on, so would the ships answer to the lack of gravity.
