Elite roleplay: Off station

OFF STATION

Your ship, deep space, anything that is not happening inside the Citi Gateway or Ingaba...

General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

"I think you should ask why he/she needs to go out there to poke around. I don't want to meet, someone would notice and wonder why three former strangers would be getting together."

I felt a headache kicking in. Tiredness was making me restless.

"You will have to negotiate a price." I said, without spelling out that she would have to pay it.

"I need to rest, Not fit enough to fly anywhere. Stay as long as you like. Don't touch anything. This Mamba stings."

I went to my small cabin and lay down listening to 'Song to the Siren.' It fitted my mood.

Willow bit her bottom lip as she watched Descartes leave her behind. Socialising really wasn’t her thing no matter how hard she tried to be normal. The woman had been through a lot in the last week, but Willow couldn’t shake the feeling it was her fault, that she had said something wrong.

Their nice conversation ran through Willows’ head as she tried to figure out what she could have said to upset her hostess.

“It’s gotta be the credits thing” said Willow rag-dolling in her seat, letting her head loll from side to side. “Now she thinks I’m only interested in her money”

That was kind of true. Now it was on offer Willow wanted the moola, but she would have stayed to help out anyway. Some called it the Florence Nightingale effect, but whatever it was, after retrieving Descartes from the pod Willow felt a connection.

She stood up intending to go explain that to Descartes, but her nerves soon got the better of her and she couldn’t find a way to say it without making it weird any way. For a long moment Willow stood nervously on the spot twisting and pulling at her fingers when something Descartes had said came to mind.

Descartes"I think you should ask why he/she needs to go out there to poke around. I don't want to meet, someone would notice and wonder why three former strangers would be getting together."

Who would wonder? Who could be watching and why?

It felt strange being on Descartes ship now the hostess had retired. Willow felt like she was intruding, so she decided to go back to her Python; she would leave a message for Descartes apologising for sounding so mercenary and doubtless by the time her anxiety was on a roll, for being born. Another message needed to be sent to that Hacker person too.

“Like ok, finding out what happened to a ship is the thing ok, but like, is that expensive out here?”

Willow Thorn “Like ok, finding out what happened to a ship is the thing ok, but like, is that expensive out here?”

Maul took a moment to really think. Which seemed to be harder for him to do lately.

"I can snoop the Nav's for 800,000 creds. The detailed traffic logs I'll be able to acquire from them will have more info than the standard detailed traffic logs you can check publicly at any local stations. For instance, system security usually gets more detailed logs that have things like ship names, registered ship IDs and CMDR names. Hell, if the Nav is a newer model it may even have trajectory logs of the ships low wake and high wake signal when it left the system. I mean, ya ever wonder how bounty hunters or security ships seem to know exactly where you are?

Anyhoo, I can just hand over my findings and call it at that, if you want more help after that we can negotiate it on the fly.
"

He sent the message along to the client.

Ok that sounded like what Willow wanted, but she was worried that Descartes would be upset. . . but Willow was ready to give up almost twice that for the Hackers help, so in her mind it was a bargain.

Willow had been in the salvage trade all her life; it was how her ma and pa made their living and they put all Willows brothers and sister to work in the family trade. Thanks to her background, Willow knew how hard it was to find a wreck with no trail to follow, and a active ship was only slightly less of a problem. They needed the hacker.

“Yeah so cool, I’m down with that. Like, you know where I’m at right? Look for the Bramble Barb, a Python fitted for salvage, and if I have to move I’ll let you know”

For the rest of the journey back to her ship, Willow tried to figure out what to say to Descartes in her message.
03 Nov 2022, 3:59pm
After a less-troubled sleep I woke to nothing but the sounds of a motionless ship. The occasional metallic click and softly purring air purifiers. No messages, yet my thoughts turned to Willow.

There was something unsettling about her. She'd recovered my pod, cleaned me up, tended my wounds. Cared for me when I was semi-concious. Yet face-to face she seemed be uncomfortable, hesitant, apologetic. Why? Perhaps she felt more at home alone in her own ship. Or with her dead clients. Or perhaps I was too abrupt, ungrateful, uncaring. No matter, we had plenty of time to become better acquainted.

The Coalsack Nebula is a strange place. A cloud of dust that blocks out visible light from anything that might be behind it. What might it be hiding? Would we have to go out there to find out.

I took a shower, incongruously wearing the helmet to keep my wounds dry, making the most of being connected to the station services and letting the water rush over me. Still excessively tired.

The Ghoul creaked and groaned as Maul watched the fuel gauge fill up. 16 jumps left on the journey to meet with the client.

Somber music from one of his playlists faintly accompanied the simulated sounds the ships computer was producing. He glanced down at his hand gripping the flight stick and noticed an odd trembling. Releasing his hand from the stick revealed that it was in fact coming from himself. He clenched his fist tight as he took another hit of onion head from the quick-use inhaler with his other hand.

"Fuel scooping complete"

The COVAS' voice ripped Maul's attention away from himself and back to the canopy and task ahead.

"Keep it together, dipshit." He mumbled to himself as he activated the FSD for another jump.

A lot of pondering was going on in Willows head this morning. With a bit of down force thanks to the rotating station, she had a chance to rock a dress; it had been months since her legs had been able to breath. But it wasn’t a lot of down force, and flashing the locals wouldn’t look very professional.

Dress professional to impress the client, she said to herself; the nice woman that had offered to pay Willow enough wedge to replace everything she owned and more. The mirror told her she did indeed look like a salvage expert; and at least there was enough pull to allow her to wear her long raven-black hair down.

Before she could change her mind, Willow contacted Descartes. As soon as the coms tweeted to let her know it was connected, Willow asked her question.

“Eh hi. So would you like to meet for breakfast?”
04 Nov 2022, 4:01pm
Message from Willow
“Eh hi. So would you like to meet for breakfast?

What? Socially awkward Willow asking me to breakfast. No-one ask's that, do they? Maybe I was hasty in my assesment of her. Breakfast was the last thing I wanted, my jaw still ached from the break. Could I politely decline? It would at least motivate me to start moving, getting some exercise, but 'small talk' no chance,

"Sure, where, when." I sent it.

Started struggling into a jumpsuit. I still felt stiff.
04 Nov 2022, 6:16pm
“Great” she said to herself.. and now Willow didn’t know what to do.

She logged in to the station network and typed in ‘Best place for Breakfast’ That’s when she found out it was late afternoon station time. Thinking about it, Willow only went to bed because Descartes had gone to sleep, and she had nothing left to do on the station.

And what did people out here eat for Breakfast anyway? Every meal Willow had on board was sucked out of a packet, or cut a chunk off the slab.

“Hi, do ya wanna meet up?” said Willow to her reflection

“See? It’s like, easy. Why the hell did I add, for breakfast? We got reasons to talk; I didn’t need to invent one”

That was the problem with socializing before she talked herself out of it, she tended to say the first thing that came to mind. Shaking her head, Willow picked a place from the list that was about halfway between both docking bays, she sent the location to Descartes with..

“About an hour good for you?”
04 Nov 2022, 7:22pm
"Fine." Send.

The concept of 'breakfast', or any other particular time to eat any particular type of food was anachronistic by any standard. Unless using it strictly to mean break-fast, i.e. eat after the previous night's non-eating, didn't everyone eat what they wanted when they were hungry? Besides, the idea of day and night made no universal sense.

I sometimes wished that I could stop over-thinking. I turned one of the ship cams on myself. Scorched eyebrows, little hair, angry scars. Thin, shapeless jumpsuit. I would get used to it.

Called up transport and gave my destination. Most people ignored me, settled into the seat wondering what was in store. Arrived early, found a quiet table facing the door and checked my routes to alternate exits. Ordered fruit juice, with a straw, waited.
04 Nov 2022, 9:03pm
Arriving at the café? Sandwich bar? Well whatever it was, Willow was glad to see it wasn’t a candlelight and Champaign kind of place. She saw Descartes sitting on her own, waiting. Quickly, Willow ducked back out of view.

“Hay rich girl, would you like to bring your bruised face that is damn near bisected by a wide cut out in public?”

She growled her frustrations. “Like smooth Willow. Totally impressing the client by giving her a chance to be self-conscious”

Willow didn’t really see the injury’s, they wouldn’t last long, and only the cut would stand up to concealer. Anyway, the woman had great cheek bones and lovely blue eyes that kept people’s attention. Willows eyes were a dirty green if someone looked closely. She’d love to naturally have eyes like Descartes. After bunching up her courage, Willow drifted in and sat opposite her.

“Um so, hi. So glade you came out” said Willow a little quickly with her large unblinking owl-like eye fixed on Descartes.

Something in her body language made Willow forget about her own anxieties and ask with genuine concern, “How are you doing Descartes?”

DescartesWith her sombre dress and long black hair the Willow looked every inch the too-young, all in black, undertaker.

Pleased to see her, I smiled. "I'm doing OK, thank you. What can I get you for breakfast?"

She seemed to relax a little. Good. Maybe because of my fruit juice, I thought of black-berries when I looked into her eyes. I yet had to thank her for saving my life.

"Something you need to tell me, anything you want to ask me? "

I was happy to answer a few questions.

"What's the news?"

I was eager to hear what her, hopefully reliable, hacker had managed to discover. In truth, I had little hope. Had they met? How good were they? Hoped she had enough negotiating skills not to pay 'up-front. Money was not an issue for me, having made and lost several fortunes before unexpectedly inheriting more than I could spend. But you don't get rich by spending more than you absolutely have to.
05 Nov 2022, 5:14pm
Glad her pale foundation was hiding her reddening cheeks, Willow tried to ignore the hot feeling on her face.

“Yeah, no I’m good. I had some nutri-block with extract from the still. Like, I don’t know why I said breakfast, you know? I’d just woken up, and I felt wired about leaving your ship without saying anything. But I also felt weird about calling you for no reason so I went with, like the first thing you know?”

She took her hands off the table because she was starting to feel the urge to wring her fingers again.

“So like, hay is good to see you up and about, right? Said Willow, eager to change the subject. “And yeah, there is some news; the one that opened your pod for me is on the way. With that sort of help, I think we got a good chance of finding out what happened to your ship”

“So like, that leads me to the point, right? Are you ready to talk about what happened out there? I’d like to know what did that to you”

Her finger was reached out ready to gently stroke a line under the cut, but then Willow remembered this one was alive, and people didn’t like it when she stared to forensically examine them.
05 Nov 2022, 7:32pm
'Yeah, no' What sort of answer was that? And what was making her so nervous.

I guess some kind of explanation was overdue, but I didn't know much about what had happened myself.

"As far as I remember: My AFMU was carrying out routine maintenence, everything but the bare essentials shut down. Nothing on the scanners. Nothing out of the ordinary on the whole trip. Then warning lights went crazy, temperature went critical, got the Eject warning, something hit me in the face. Then nothing 'till I woke for a while in my pod. Then, again, nothing 'till I woke up stuck to the bulkhead of your ship."

Wasn't much to go on, and my pod was still in her hold. Must get it transferred.

"I was just updating exploration data. Nothing in my hold."

"Where are you meeting your contact?"
05 Nov 2022, 7:55pm
While Descartes was explaining what happened, Willow was using her vast technical knowledge of star-ship systems to try and work out what went wrong. A sudden heat spike in repair mode was hard to achieve without a major system failure or outside influences.

As for what hit Descartes in the face, Willow couldn’t stat to imagine. She had never been on the bridge of a Corvette.

She had her elbow on the table and her chin resting on her hand while she looked through Descartes and dived deep into her own head, trying to work out what could have happened.

“The person is coming here, I told them where my ship is” whispered Willow absently. Her already soft voice was even quieter now she was concentrating on the problem. “I’ve used their board a lot; I don’t think they will pull a fast one, you know”

Still deep in a technical puzzle, and still focused on Descartes, Willow dreamily asked another question that had been on her mind.

“So like, are you of Greek descent?”
