Elite roleplay: Off station

OFF STATION

Your ship, deep space, anything that is not happening inside the Citi Gateway or Ingaba...

General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

'I'm fine just a few bruises. Nothing a long rest won't cover.'

I look around the ship thunder can be heard in the distance. Melli looks like she has seen a ghost with how badly she is trembling.

'Sorry Melli. I didn't expect things to go south like that. You too Kira. I will pay for any and all repairs needed on the ship.'

I sigh and rub the back of my neck as I follow Kira to the on ship armory.

'These kinds of storms in the mountains are so rare I didn't think it would turn out like this. If we were in the Midwest of the country this would be a normal thing.'

The ships main generator fails and the emergency power kicks on and a pulsating warm red glow fills the corridors. I call over to Edi realizing I never got a status update for my brother's ship.

'Edi. Did my brother make it away from the storm?'

"A type 9 crashed down at the bottom of the valley. Communications said "no thrust". I assume they were struck by what you called a superbolt. I marked their location for a retrieval mission should you want to return."

My eyes goes wide and my jaw drops when I hear the news. The unnervingly calm tone of Edi making the delivery even more shocking. There is a groaning sound and the ship drops a few feet and a few of the lower levels collapse from fatigue.

'Well might as well see what supplies we have the nearest port won't have a rescue team sent out for a couple hours. Especially since we are and imperial cutter in federation space.'

'For what its worth Kira I think you handled that storm pretty damn well. Welcome to earth.'

'For what its worth Kira I think you handled that storm pretty damn well. Welcome to earth.'

“Pf. Figures that my first welcome into a world has it trying to kill me.”

I grabbed the railgun and plasma pistol, with some ammo for both, keeping the pistol attached to my right thigh.

“I’m gonna go out through one of the starboard airlocks to get a look at the damage from the outside. Assuming that those even still work.”

I went off to the aforementioned airlock, pulling my hood back up in the process. I couldn’t recall if I’d taken it off to see better, or it’d simply come off on its own in the process. A ladder slowly extended and folded down to allow safe descent, when the exterior door opened, only to get stuck about halfway down.

“Alright, guess I’ll give it a little help.”

I put the railgun onto my back, at an angle to avoid its barrel clashing with my lower body, and climbed down, feeling a rapid movement as my weight unjammed the mechanism when I reached the ladder’s end.

Once safely on the surface, I looked over the ship, ignoring whether Melli and Silvia were around as well. The hull looked scorched from the many different lightning strikes, along with various marks of damage from hail, the big tree and random debris that slipped through the shield. The right thruster was also still falling victim to a fire, but it wasn’t spreading anywhere, thanks to the lack of flammable material near it.

My next instinct was to check our distance to the storm cell, but the clear sky that I found presented to me said we were currently in the clear. The pitch black cloud in the distance was also moving away from us, though very much still active - the tornado equally so, carrying a large variety of debris, including large pieces of metal. I hoped they were from the house, rather than a ship, and that no one else was in an excursion around the mountain range.

“Well, good news, we’re probably clear of the storm …” A few light drops of rain began to fall. “… well, rain stragglers side, that is. This is going to make for a hell of a story when we get back.”

On cue, the right thruster groaned and partly separated from the ship, behind which a large gash in the ground was visible.

“And add another few million to the repair bill.”

I wasn’t feeling too concerned about rescue or opportunists swinging by, and made a lightly joking remark about the repair cost to lighten the mood a little, if Silvia was standing behind me. I didn’t much know how to talk about the crashed Type 9 to her.

I exit the ship carrying Melli and make my way to the ground. The cutter is in a far worse state than I would have liked for it to be.

'Well all we can do now is wait.'

My concern right now though is more so on Jackson's status. Having heard his ship went down due to the storm bothered me tremendously.

'I hope Jackson is OK. Though there is nothing we can do about it right now. Damn it.'
06 Jul 2023, 6:22pm
“Best I can offer here is to have my carrier come over to a nearby system, and get another ship transferred down here. It’ll be faster than waiting for the regular service, at least. But for that, we need to be at a port first. I suppose you could bring one of yours if you wanted.”

I decided to get the jump underway anyway, since we were going to be waiting here regardless, and I didn’t want to waste too much time once recovered. Fifteen minutes would be enough time for Silvia to decide if she wanted to bring a ship of her own, too.

“So… any suggestions on what we should do until a rescue ship drops by? Other than keep an eye out for potential scavengers. Any of those come within a kilometer, I’m going to fire at them. They’ll get a warning shot first, though.”

I had no intentions of letting anyone anywhere near the ship unless they were there to give us a lift out, or to repair it - if it could still be - which made me think of something.

“I’ll be right back. Going to grab the ship’s memory core. If there’s one thing I don’t want to leave behind while a repair crew works on this ship, it’s that.”

I headed back to the ladder to climb back inside, hoping I wouldn’t have to take too long of a detour to get to where the memory core was located.
07 Jul 2023, 12:56am
I returned to Silvia after a few minutes, the memory core hanging off of the utility belt. Any backups within the ship had been erased too, with the exception of camera and sensor logs, as I didn't want scavengers to go poking around in my data if the ship couldn't be recovered. My hopes for that certainly weren't high, looking at its state.

The adrenaline was now starting to wear off, letting the exhaustion it had kicked away return, so I sat on the ground next to her, looking out for a ship, be that from rescue services or an opportunist looking to pick on a downed ship.

"Well, I guess we just wait now."

I didn't have much to complain about at the moment, as the sun returning formed a very noticeable rainbow, and Melli looked busy sunning herself in the wet grass.

A few hours later...

"I'm afraid there's only so much we can do to recover the ship. That storm did quite a number on it."

The Federal rescue agent responsible for our case was doing his best to not look at my hands for any knives too much, and remain polite, while telling me what I had expected. He couldn't hide that he was somewhat uneasy at my hooded appearance, though.

"I figured as much.", I replied, crossing my arms while leaning back slightly. "Can you give me a timeframe, at least? I'd rather not have to buy entirely new."

"Are you sure? With that damage, the insurance payment could well amount to the same price as a new Imperial Cutter. On top of the recovery cost, transfer services, security teams for the repair crew ..."

"I get it. But I've got enough to cover whatever you need paid to get that thing off the ground again. Though she ..." I glanced to Silvia. "... won't like me refusing her proposal to cover the bill."

"May I ask how you got caught up in that storm to begin with? I believe weather services issued a warning for that region in the morning, advising air traffic to stay clear."

"Well, not much of a choice when the pad the ship's on gives out under it. Not sure if it was from a landslide or otherwise, though. Anyway, there was another ship there with us - Type 9, from a construction crew working on rebuilding a destroyed mansion - and they weren't so lucky. I take it you have their location as well?"

"Yes, but we haven't yet had the time to organize and send a search party."

"Save your people the effort. We'll investigate the crash site ourselves. Though I won't argue if they decide to help, anyway. That tornado which passed over the area might have scattered debris and pods all over the mountains."

"Very well. I can assure transport to the nearest port in space, if you do not wish to wait for your ship here. It may take a few days to get it to basic flight capability again."

"No need. I've got one or two I can have transferred here. Thanks for your help."

I turned around and gestured Silvia to follow me out of the office, into the commons of the ground port. It was very different to one on a non, or tenuous, atmospheric planet, surrounded by a city and all kinds of buildings, ranging from simple residences to skyscrapers. I stopped by a bench that provided a good view of the surrounding area, and sat down on it.

"So, what do you think? Should we go look for anyone that survived the crash?", I asked Silvia, fully expecting her to say yes. "We also need to decide what ship to take out there. I've got a few that have vehicle hangars, most of them with Scorpions. Unless you've got a point to make for the Scarab - " I pulled a face when mentioning it, as I hated driving that thing more often than not. " - I say we take one with that thing. Or we just go on foot, but I doubt we'll drag any pods out of there by hand."
07 Jul 2023, 5:07am
Kira Goto"May I ask how you got caught up in that storm to begin with? I believe weather services issued a warning for that region in the morning, advising air traffic to stay clear."

'She pretty much naked it on the head. We were grounded on a landing pad. We didn't have much choice. It was take flight or end up 1800t of twisted alloys at the bottom of the canyon.'

I waited for the exchange to finish. Thinking only of whether or not my brother was alive. His crew was a secondary thought but it was my fault he was there in the first place.

'I don't have anything with a scorpion on it, though I feel like a scarab would be better due to its recon scanner. You have to remember we are going to be in a wooded area. Maybe have both scorpion to clear debris and a path and the scan to track down any signals we will also have more cargo capacity between the two of us that way.'

Taking a seat next to Kira I pull out a pack of cigarettes and stare at them contemplating where or not I wanted one. I lean back on the bench and close my eyes. My head was throbbing and I was feeling weak. Melli was doing her best to hide from the general public.

'I just hope Jackie is OK. I don't want to have to explain to his wife why he isn't coming home and how is my fault he...... no I won't think like that.'

I think about the terrain we will be flying into and try to think of the best ship to use for a rescue operation. Only ship I can thunk of that would be good enough for a tight quarters landing would be the Challenger but with it being fitted for Thargoid interception I had to think.

"Only other option is Memento Mori"

'I only have 1 ship available to land in such a remote region currently. And that's back in Inara on Citi.'
07 Jul 2023, 8:50am
Taking a seat next to Kira I pull out a pack of cigarettes and stare at them contemplating where or not I wanted one.

I raised an eyebrow at the pack of cigarettes before the idea that it might be impolite reached my brain.

“You smoke? And, no offense, but I would prefer to not have to breathe those fumes in. I have a sensitive nose. And those things stink.”

I left it at that and went back to the subject of ship choice.

“Well, I do have one option which happens to be a Phantom with a Scarab and Scorpion. That’s my explorer ship, though, so we’d better hope that storm’s long gone by now. And that no unfriendly visitors drop by in a ship of their own… or we wait for the hangar to be refitted to another suitable ship. It won’t need the frame shift booster down here anyway, and only take a few minutes.”

I showed her the ship I had in mind, which was just a Phantom but designed to do most things a person could think of doing in the Bubble, bar cargo hauling, and would be capable of handling itself when attacked.

“Let me just be clear - I’d have the booster stripped to place the vehicle hangar with the Scorpion and Scarab in it. That sound good to you?”

An unexpected message caught my attention, distracting me from the matter of ship choice as I read it and thought whether to reply, a skeptical frown on my face.

Kira Goto  “You smoke? And, no offense, but I would prefer to not have to breathe those fumes in. I have a sensitive nose. And those things stink.”

'Very Very rarely. I had quit for a long while. But after the fight in the Maelstrom system my nerves were so high that even with a drink in hand I needed something to help. These used to be Venus favorite. Mint chocolate flavored. Strange I know but they have a pleasant aroma. But I will refrain from it for now. Honestly more than anything it's a reminder of times past.'

I get kind of choked up at the last sentence. I fight back the tears and compose myself. I put the cigarettes away and respond to Kira's proposal of using her ship.

'Actually I'd like something with a bit more umph in her. I can have Ranger refitted and sent over. It'll give us some time to prepare properly. I'll have Liberty bring the ship and my weapon. It'll be faster than having that stupid ship transfer service that takes ages to get your ships.'

I pull up a new refit for Ranger and show it to Kira. I also send a short message to liberty to get the ship refit and to bring it and my weapons to Earth.

'I'll have a scorpion and a scarab on board so we can use both. I kind of feel like being in the commanders seat this time around. No offense to you but that shit was freaky.'

Strange I know but they have a pleasant aroma.

“I still don’t think it’s healthy. But you do you. I’m not here to tell you what to do with your body.”

I let the statement linger for a second to move away from the subject.

“Also, if you expect me to just sit in the co-pilot seat in your ship, you can forget that and write it to someone else. There’s a reason I always either fly on my own or never give control of the ship to anyone else. Nor do I want to play backseat driver. Which you did a very good job of, by the way.”

“And who the hell is Liberty? What’s with this ridiculous trend of Salvation-esque nicknames all of a sudden?”

I had to restrain myself significantly to avoid using overly inappropriate language, but the expression on my face gave away that I found it rather dumb anyway. I turned my attention back to the message I’d gotten and decided to answer it, with some very clear wording on my feelings toward it.
07 Jul 2023, 3:28pm
'Liberty is an Imperial slave I took in. She was from Venus' region on Amenta. Her debt is small and with this action I will consider her debt paid. I will send the release to the Imperial slave committee and send her on her way to be a normal citizen again.'

I clench my jaw and my fist thinking about being a passenger princess when a member of my family is in danger. I do my best to control my temper and emotions as I respond to Kira.

'I will not stand idly by in some ship unable to do anything except watch a screen for module status. I'm sorry but I will be taking my own ship. You can follow along if you want to.'

I stand from the bench and storm off towards the port docking office to relay my request to Liberty on Citi Gateway to get my ship refitted and to bring it to Earth. The whole time I am in the office I am fuming. My worry replaced by frustration towards someone who I thought would understand my position. Melli recieves some strange looks from other pilots and port authority as she sits down by my feet.
07 Jul 2023, 3:42pm
I followed Silvia over to the office, waiting for her to be done in there. I wasn't interested in just letting her storm off because she was acting on emotions first instead of properly listening. As she came out of it, I grabbed her by the right shoulder with a determined, but gentle grip.

"You're not thinking straight. I wasn't telling you to get into my ship and sit there doing nothing, but that I was not interested in sitting in one of yours doing nothing either.", I told her. "But it wouldn't even matter. If you want both of us on the ground searching, what do you think it would change if you did or didn't pilot the ship to the mountains?"

I let my grip go, and took a few steps back.

"I already called one of my own ships down. Call me when you've got your own here. I'll either stay in the air to provide recon and support from there, or hop into a vehicle too. Your people, your call. In the meantime, I'll just get some food and let you work through your feelings. We'll both have our ships and no one has to do anything they don't like. But if there's any trouble on the way in or out, I don't want to sit in the co-pilot seat doing nothing useful like you were in that storm. I thought you'd understand someone else feeling that way, too."
07 Jul 2023, 4:56pm
Kira Goto"But it wouldn't even matter. If you want both of us on the ground searching, what do you think it would change if you did or didn't pilot the ship to the mountains?"

'It would mean that I have some fucking control over a ship in the event something were to happen. That storm isn't as active but it is still lingering. On the ground or in the air we are at the mercy of nature and I'd rather not have my life in the hands of someone else again.'

My tone is less than friendly. I turn away as Kira heads off to grab some food.

'And yes I am acting on emotions here because that's my brother out there. I could give a damn if it was anyone else.' I yell back to Kira as she walks away.

I find a seat nearby the docking terminal and wait for Ranger to arrive.
07 Jul 2023, 5:35pm
So maybe you could stop yelling at the fucking person that saved your life. It’s not my goddamn fault nature dropped the proverbial anvil on our heads without warning.

You’re expecting me to be entirely without control in a ship you’re piloting, just like you were in that storm, but somehow it’s not acceptable when I don’t like it, while it is for you to shit on me for that, and tell me you don’t like not being in control of a ship in a messy situation?

I get that it’s your damn brother or whatever who crashed in that transporter, but get a damn grip on yourself. Or you can do this alone. I’m offering to help when I absolutely wouldn’t have to.

If you want to deal with the bad weather and the scavengers bound to roam the site by yourself, go ahead and keep being a bitch. If you can’t be friendly with me, when I’m trying to be, just because I said something that actually agrees with what you said… why should I continue to be?

You’re not the only person that’s had to deal with this mess. Maybe you’d like to remember what you yourself told me just yesterday, instead of letting your mood out on someone else.

I sent the message without much of a second thought, beginning to be at the end of my patience, and started to look around for somewhere that offered food which looked interesting. It’d at least keep my mind off of her acting up.
07 Jul 2023, 7:05pm
I flip the message away after reading it and continue to wait for my ship to arrive. She was right though I shouldn't be taking it out on her but at this point I just needed to vent. I decided not to contact her back and let her know my plan by showing it to her.

The ship arrives a couple of hours later having been refit for the role I needed it to serve. As Liberty handed me the manifest I give her the release papers for her servitude. The expression on her face said everything I needed to know. I handed her a travel voucher and transferred 20mil Cr to her account to help her get her life back in track. Her face turned to worry thinking she was going to owe a debt to me.

'No debt. This isn't a loan hun. This is a real payment for your work. Take care and keep in touch.'

I turn away after giving her a hug and board my ship. I check over the rifle on the weapons rack and take a seat in the commanders chair. I ready all ship systems and take off from the landing pad. As I depart I decide to buzz the docking terminal and hangars. I lock the Type 9 crash site and give all power to engines. The surrounding city life stops what it's doing watching an Alliance Challenger rip through the peaceful commons area as a sort of display to say "fuck you" to anyone who may have pissed the pilot off.

'Alright Melli time to find my brother.'

I watched a Challenger take off outside and buzz the city, well knowing whose it was. But I only felt a distinct lack of caring, or any emotions whatsoever, and sighed with my eyes closed.

I knew that woman had a plan, but if she wanted me in it, she'd have to call for me, and prove to me that the friendship we had wasn't worth throwing out for getting needlessly annoyed at a simple offer to get going faster, by coming along on one of my ships. A different ship with a smooth, reflective silver paintjob was coming in to land - my alternative choice to the Phantom, if I so desired. Somewhat slower, but still faster than Silvia's Challenger, and more adept at combat as well.

I turned my attention away from the window and to the various shops around the port, that were obviously just tourist traps. But I had time to waste until I got a message, and money to spare, the latter of which I cared for more, as it spared me from having to haggle for a better price. I never liked to do so and minimize interaction to the purchase and maybe some unimportant small talk, anyway.
