Elite roleplay: Off station

OFF STATION

Your ship, deep space, anything that is not happening inside the Citi Gateway or Ingaba...

General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

I wanted to plunge a dagger into his chest slowly and watch him down in his own blood for what he made me witness.'

“Funny you should say that. I did exactly that to the person that caused me to lose my sister. Until I put a revolver bullet into their head, anyway. He seemed to delight in trying to taunt me, until I told him that it was his doing that made me turn out as I was. Tried to plead for his life. I told him, ‘You chose your side when this war started’, and ended it. You’d think I’d have learned anything from that time, but I repeated the same mistakes over and over …”

I moved my left hand to Melli and provided more scratches, mostly centered around the belly.

“Not much I can change now, but I wish she was still here. I haven’t found anyone like her again. At least… not yet. Maybe I never will… I don’t know. What good is revenge if it just leaves you feeling empty afterward?”

I sighed.

“I’m not sure where to go. Do you mind if I hang around? I want to stay away from all that mess with the Thargoids for a little bit.”

'I don't think it would be a problem. Besides your kind of my ride back to Inara. Though I suppose I could always use Apex.'

I cringe at the thought of using that glorified taxi service. Melli growls at the mention of Apex as if we have had a bad experience with them.

'Don't worry Melli I wouldn't subject you to that again. Hell I would even subject myself to that again.'

Thunder rolls steadily at this point. The deep rumbles rising and falling at an even pace. Wind howls steadily and rainfall becomes even more present. I look to Kira and smile.

'Wouldn't want you in those clouds anyhow. With the Thunder like it is, you'd fry your capacitors. This is one of the worst storms we have had here.'

I sigh and take a long slow breath.

'I don't know if I will find someone like Venus. She was fierce and unrelenting with anyone that wasn't me. With me she was sweet and kind. She never fought with me over petty things everytime she came home she would bring me some sort of elaborate gift. Then that bastard Diaz came along and fucked it all up. All because he couldn't let Venus say no to his illegal slave trading.'

Melli play bites Kira's hand as she scratches her belly and let's out little playful squeaks.

Melli play bites Kira's hand as she scratches her belly and let's out little playful squeaks.

“I knew that was coming.”

I continued the scratches and rubs while lightly defending the hand against paws and bite attempts, looking to Silvia.

“Don’t suppose you brought any toys? I don’t have a pet, so nothing of the sort on the ship. And we’re going to be stuck here until that storm passes… I’ll have a look at the ship before we take off, though.”

I threw a glance at the Imperial Hammer that was sitting in the corner.

“You’re probably wondering why I wanted one of those instead of a standard railgun, well, I needed parts of the burst fire mechanism. Modified it so I can fire the shots whenever I like, and switch between either a single full power shot, or three separate shots per charge. Keeping the gun here now for spare parts. Once I no longer need it, I’ll probably give it to an outfitting service somewhere to do with as they wish.”

I paused for a second, thinking about yhe results of my first field test of the weapon.

“I might have gone a bit overkill, though, since even one shot from the low-power setting will kill someone regardless of their shield and suit. The result isn’t too pretty for anyone hit.”
05 Jul 2023, 10:03pm
'I might have something in my bag..... Melli grab my pack please.'

Melli rolls over quickly and heads out of the room cautiously listening to the sounds of the storm. I prop myself up while looking at Kira and in a sarcastic tone respond to her last statement about her weapon being overcharged.

'Ya don't say. You decided to take a weapon designed to rip through a ship and modify it for use against squishy meat suits. How did you expect it to go? You pull the trigger and the rounds reacts like a traditional sniper shot?'

There is an explosion outside the ship, as a bolt of lightning strikes one of the large construction power generators, igniting the fuel tank and sending high velocity shrapnel every direction. Some of the debris strikes the shields. There is an ominous metallic groaning sound coming from the landing pad. The sound of wind increases and the ship shakes as the large tree that had fallen on the center of the hull shifts, wedging itself between the right side of the hull and the right side main thruster. The sound of crunching metal and snapping branches ring through the hull.

'Glad I'm not out there right now.'

I think about the rifle I put together with my uncle while he was in the military and had access to some questionable tech.

'I wish I had my rifle here with me. Things a beauty. Small scale plasma accelerator style rail system firing a tungsten cored plasma round. It lacks the punch of a true rail rifle but has a higher rate of fire.'
05 Jul 2023, 10:42pm
"And here I was wondering if turning the shield on for convenience was just a waste of fuel."

I sat upright, turning on the shield boosters as well using my wrist computer, while putting more power into the systems instead of engines.

"Feels like nature is giving us a sign here. If that pad goes or the tree lights up - shame about it, by the way - I'm getting this ship out of here, no questions asked. Because I won't leave you time to, and I'm not looking to buy a new Cutter soon. Anyway, maybe do a comms check with your team. Not sure if they had their transporter's shield up. Sure doubt they had time to leave before this storm hit."

"And as to the railgun, I haven't actually ever used a handheld one until recently. Just ship-based ones, or as a manned ground defense turret on my home planet. And let me tell you, those things packed a punch. Kinda needed 'em too, considering the very abundant megafauna on that planet. Anyway, back to my design, I didn't particularly leave the original magnetic accelerators intact, since I had to scale the whole thing down and all that."

"Needs to charge for a few seconds, then you can release the trigger again. Next pull fires either one high-powered shot or three separate ones, depending on firing mode. As I said. With the low power shots, can fire about one per second, with up to three per charge. But it doesn't need to be fully charged to fire with either setting. I suppose I could just have designed it to fire immediately after release, but if the target happens to find cover that protects it from a hypersonic tungsten round, I'd rather hold the shot. And the capacitors, or whatever they're called again, are designed to hold that energy until I can fire."

I turned my attention to a camera in the room.

"EDI, keep... no, get the thrusters into standby mode, just in case. I'm not trusting this pad after that sound. And fire up the sensors while you're at it. Provide Silvia with a report on the Type 9's status."
05 Jul 2023, 11:08pm
Before Edi has a chance to respond properly the pad we are on fails. There is a sudden jolt as the support beams shear of off their anchor points. Then a feeling of momentary free fall before the cutter slams down on the sloped incline. I let out a grunt as I slam down against the floor the sound of metal crunching beneath the weight of the ship. My immediate reaction is fear for Melli.

'Oh shit Melli! She doesn't have her booties on! Kira try to get the beast tamed otherwise this is going to hurt! It's at least 1km to the bottom of this slope. And with the weight of this ship we will be a death sled.'

I force myself to my feet stumbling around as the ship begins to slide down the side of the mountain. I run, well more like drunkenly stumble through the ship slamming into walls and doorframe as I make my way to Melli. She is doing her best to stay put but is getting tossed around by the jolting ship. I reach her just in time for the ship to go airborne again as it skims off a portion of the steep embankment.

Crunching, screeching, and rattling echo throughout the ship as I make my way to the cockpit holding onto Melli. Edi calls ove the intercom system as I strap myself into one of the seats in the cockpit.

"Thrusters online. Hull integrity decreasing rapidly. Shields at 50%. Landing gear severly damaged."

'Kira get this ship off the ground please!'

Through the rain streaked canopy a large cliff can be seen ahead of us. The cutter is ripped sideways as the left side main thruster strikes a large boulder. I close my eyes as the ship slides off the edge of the cliff at roughly 90m/s. The ship glides through the air sideways and begins to fall causing another moment of weightlessness. A flash of lightning shows the ground 2km below us. My mouth can only form two words as panic sets in.

'Oh shit!'
05 Jul 2023, 11:42pm
"And you thought reinforcing the shield was a bad idea.", I remarked to Silvia, oddly calm in the face of the situation, but adrenaline - and some assistance from the cortical implant - had temporarily kicked away any weakness I felt. Ship momentum was rapidly picking up, and frontal thrusters didn't do much good to try slowing down the descent. Nor were the verts under the nose and at the back pushing the front up fast enough.

'Screw it. You can't stop the momentum, use it to your advantage.'

Given the mountainous terrain available, I thought of using it to our benefit, flicking the flight assist toggle to off. As the ship rotated to face roughly to where it was heading, I hit the boost, ignoring the warning sign about the landing gear not being fully in yet, and kicked the nose up, diverting power to shields, while working to get the rotation under control.

"Better hang on! This is going to be a rough hit!"

The Cutter's belly slammed into a face of rock, nearly throwing me out of the chair while making a notable dent into what remained of the shield - twenty percent strength. But the maneuver worked, and the downward momentum had been cancelled, while the remainder of the boost carried us off to the side and away from the cliff. I toggled flight assist back on so that navigation systems helped keep the ship floating, for now, then leveled it out and set the throttle to zero.

"System check! Give me a rundown of the thruster assembly.", I ordered toward EDI.

"Thrusters are operating at half capacity. It appears a tree has also become lodged in the right nacelle of the ship.", EDI calmly stated.

"Figures. Well, I guess it could've been worse."

"I recommend abandoning the cargo of the ship. It may be wiser to recover it later instead of it weighing it down."

"I suppose that's sensible." I looked to Silvia, who was still caught up in the shock. "You have any objections to that? I don't think we're out of the woods just yet, and we might not want that weight inside the ship."

As though the storm wanted to confirm my suspicion, a lightning bolt lit up what had been a relatively sunny day not long ago. I tested the ship's movement with the right thruster damaged, noticing a distinct drift to the right. I reduced the left thruster's output accordingly, leaving more power to vertical thrust, which was what the ship needed more of right now anyway.
06 Jul 2023, 12:22am
'What was it 4 tons of concrete? We drop it might as well condemn it to be a 4 ton boulder. Though I have enough credits to buy a new shipment. That tree is going to be a problem though.'

As if to spite us a bolt of plasma strikes the ships nose. The cockpit lights up a blinding white and the sound causes my ears to ring. I blink in an attempt to clear my vision but to no avail. I feel the ship lurching the opposite direction as a second bolt strikes the rear of the ship. Unaware of how loud I am talking, I yell at Kira.

'GET US THE HELL OUT OF THIS STORM. I DONT CARE HOW YOU DO IT JUST GET US AWAY FROM THIS SUPERCELL.'

A sheet of lightning erupts through the clouds about illuminating the entire landscape and in the distance through the nearly opaque sheet of rain an ominous funnel shaped cloud can be seen twirling and rushing towards the ground. Trees and debris are ripped from their roots as the massive tornado tears its way through the valley below.

The comms cut in and out as an unknown signal calls out to us.

"May.....*static*......mayda...... mayday...... lako......*static* heavy.... no thrust..........*static*"

A large burning mass of a type 9 can be seen barreling through the clouds narrowly missing the cutter. No signs of reverse thrusters are visible as the ship plummets to the earth below. The ship slams into the surface flames erupting from a split fuel cell. Edi calls over the intercoms.

"It appears the Type 9 did not clear the airspace properly. Crash zone marked for possible retrieval. Kira if I might suggest. Please get us out of here before we end up like that Lakon ship."
06 Jul 2023, 12:45am
"No need to ask me twice! If anyone survived that crash, they're better off going into an escape pod. They'll at least have a chance at surviving that tornado in one of those instead of that wreck."

I decided to dump the cargo, not that four tons of concrete would've mattered much, then turned the Cutter away from the funnel and delivered equal energy to both thrusters and shields while hitting the boost to create distance to it.

"Away or up?", I asked Silvia. "You'd better tell me which way to go, because I wasn't trained to fly through a damn storm cloud. And I definitely know pilots like to avoid them."

'Especially since this one seems to like defying the rule that lightning strikes on aircraft are rare.', I added in my thoughts, not expecting much from Silvia after the way she yelled at me. I at least had the benefit of both military and pilot training to stop panic from getting to my head too much.

"And keep an eye on that thruster with the tree in it for me. I've got an idea if we need to be rid of it, but it'll be risky."

A status panel for the thruster lit up in front of Silvia, and I hoped I could rely on her for at least that. Especially since that was almost certainly the workers' Type 9 that went down in flames just there, but I couldn't even be sure she'd heard me. But her pet's head was definitely looking in my direction.

"Hey, little one, can you pull her out of that state? I don't care how you do it, just get her to pay attention to that display!"

Whether the animal was also temporarily deafened or just intelligent enough to read my lips, I couldn't tell, but my request had clearly been understood, judging by the cry that I heard come from the side.
06 Jul 2023, 1:33am
Melli grabs my hand and shakes it vigorously. I blink away the last of the yellow green haze that had taken over my vision. I see a display in front of me and even though my hearing is muted I can understand Melli's screeches.

tree watch panel.

It took me a second to understand what she meant by that but once it registered I gave Melli a pat on the head. There is a whooshing sound as my hearing warps back to normal. Proximity alarms are blaring and sensors are going haywire due to the large Electromagnetic disturbance created by the supercell. The winds grow ever more violent as the storm barrels up against the mountains. Edi breaks the silence from everyone trying to figure out what to do.

"Kira my calculations show the safest path out of here is to the west."

I look around and try to find any amount of daylight away from the storm epicenter. I spot a break in the black miasma like thunderclouds.

'Edi is correct west is the best option. Watch the sensors for Electromagnetic interference. It will indicate a lightning strike. We are effectively a giant moving lightning rod. The shields are kind of our enemy just as much as they are keeping us safe. The ions in the shields are charging the air around us and when we cross into a charged zone the ions around us complete a link making us the path of least resistance to the ground.'
06 Jul 2023, 1:49am
"Avoid the lightning in a cloud that fills the entire sky with it, while in a ship that changes directions as well as a slug? Yeah, sure. Totally possible."

I set the throttle back to zero while turning the ship to where the nav compass said west was, once I recalled how the numbers on it worked. Then I pushed it back to full, and hit the boost key, locking the throttle in place so I could focus on adjusting course where possible. Easier said than done, with the thrusters only working at half power, and the storm didn't hesitate to keep throwing lightning bolts out to try blinding me.

"EDI, either darken that canopy or close the damn shutter again. I need to at least see the compass heading so I have a clue where I'm going."

As prompted, the shutter went down, with the sensor display switching to a wider view to better account for any terrain potentially getting in the way. But I'd also been raising the ship's altitude, to avoid any risk of collision, and time in the event of thruster failure. As if the ship knew my thoughts, a different alert went off on the Cutter's bridge. Thruster malfunction.

"Silvia, your turn. Tell me if it's coming from that damned tree in the right engine. Don't do anything, I have a plan for that. Just give me its status."

My mind was already too busy with other things to check myself, not least of which the tornado, which I couldn't tell the speed of relative to the ship. And the heading was not perfect to gain distance from it, if that was even possible with damaged engines.
06 Jul 2023, 2:29am
'That thruster is on its way out. Oh and a bit of advice keep the throttle in the blue. Boost when you need to course correct and keep your eyes on the nav panel. I used to fly and anaconda through icy rings. I even ran a Type 9 the same way. This ship can be nimble if you fly her right. I watched Venus flip her Cutter around like it was a child's play thing when she needed to.'

Keeping an eye on the status panel I watch the thruster output reduce to 10%.

'Uh... any longer and that thrusters going to go'

There is a strange groaning sound coming from the rear of the ship. I realize our altitude is getting too close to the cloud ceiling. Knowing what lies about the clouds I speak up to Kira.

'Stay low. You breach that cloud ceiling and that tree will be the least of out worries. I'm talking turbulence that'll rattle your bone. Wind shear that'll throw us all over the place. Hail the size of softballs. Not to mention we would be the most ionized thing in the entire cloud system. We can survive the small bolts but the big ones. A superbolt can produce upwards of 1 trillion joules. We would drop from the sky like a rock with a direct strike like that. Not to mention the heat from it could potentially rupture the fuel cells.'

I look back to the status window.

'You might want to do whatever it is you have planned.'
06 Jul 2023, 2:57am
I leveled the ship out to stop it from going up into the clouds, then responded to Silvia.

“The boost also cuts out a lot faster if I keep the throttle in the blue. And I’ve flown this ship for a few months, dodged various Thargoids, including the Basilisk, with it, so I know how it likes to drift too.”

I flicked a few switches on one of the panels.

“You’re not gonna like the plan. EDI, how are the fuel lines to the thrusters looking?”

“Damaged, but holding. Why?”, EDI replied.

“I think I know how to get rid of that tree. If you close the lines that are still connected off and vent some of the hydrogen fuel out, that’s going to cut it in half and throw the remains out when it fires back up.”

“That is not a safe procedu - “

“I don’t care if it’s safe or not. We need that thing to work, or at least shut it down so we can keep the central thruster working.”

“Doing this requires the thrusters to be offline. Are you certain it is worth it?”

“Better than crash landing with a tornado closing in on us. I’m going to do it.”

Silvia probably thought I was insane, and maybe rightfully so. But that tree needed to go, and I didn’t care how. I took my hands off the controls after setting the Cutter straight, then changed my mind. Her mention of the lightning gave me an idea.

Intact fuel lines were closed off. I pointed the ship’s nose up slightly and boosted, turning flight assist off at the same time. A simple press of a button redirected some of the superheated hydrogen out to the thruster. Crackling followed by a loud bang as the tree was basically torn in half by the plasma, and at the same time, the ship passed into the lowest cloud layer.

“Now! Start the reboot sequence!”

Lightning almost immediately enveloped the ship and began to eat away at the shields, which were getting dangerously low, and I could feel the wind shaking the hull. But it was all part of my plan - I carefully dropped a small section of the shielding, which allowed a lightning bolt to slip through and impact the remains of the trunk, tearing it apart and clearing the thruster. A few panels on the ship sparked and have out as a result, but nothing essential broke, and I hoped the residual charge would help to jump start the engine.

Gravity now began to act on the Cutter, no longer carried upward by its inertia, letting the ship slip out of the cloud. The reboot was only just underway, but the ship would quickly gain momentum while that happened.

“Alright, Silvia. Listen carefully. As soon as that reboot finishes, you either need to shut down that right thruster and the left, or calibrate the output of both to match one another. We won’t have much time before the ship hits the ground afterward, but you’ve got preset buttons on the display panel.”

“You do it right, I’ll boost straight up so we don’t smash into the ground, and get out of this alive, and can… well, sort of land the ship in a safe area. No promises it’ll be smooth, but it’ll be better than ending up in a dozen pieces all over a mountain range. Shields won’t come back at enough strength to take an impact at full speed, so don’t think about relying on them.”

I didn’t feel like telling her the not-so-smooth landing, wherever it would occur, would be more like scraping off the armor of the ship on the ground - the landing gear certainly wouldn’t come out again.
06 Jul 2023, 3:39am
I sit back in disbelief as Kira decides to the complete opposite of what I had asked her to do.

"She sent us into the clouds. Damn it."

I watch as the sensors go crazy indicating we have entered a charged section of air. There is a strange sensation of electricity tracing through the air. Melli's fur, Kira's and my hair all stands on end. There is a strange almost charging sound but it's not coming from the engines.

'Kira..... divert all power to the shields now!'

Just as she obliges and all pips are to shields the charged air ignites. Bright white light can be seen through the slits in the front shutter. All capacitors instantaneously recharge from the sudden electrical charge. Due to the sudden influx of energy the right side thruster erupts into flames, unable to contain the energy flow. The ship roars to life as I shut down all fuel to the left side auxiliary thruster.

Kira engages the booster and the cutter barely manages to slow downward momentum and begins to climb again. I call over to Edi as Kira levels the ship.

'Edi open the shutters we need to be able to see.'

The shutters open about half way before getting stuck.

"That is as far as the shutters will open I'm afraid."

'That's fine. Thank you.'

I look around at the surrounding area for any place to land or rather crash the cutter.

'Keep heading on our current course. We should come across a large abandoned landing strip in about 2km'

I ship lurches and drifts wildly without its auxiliary thrusters. The main thruster straining to keep the ship moving.
06 Jul 2023, 4:04am
“Well, that went better as I expected.”, I chose to remark, and diverted what power remained or was no longer used by the thrusters on either side into vertical, to keep the ship in the air as long as possible, and try to slow its forward momentum down.

Saying nothing about Silvia’s decision to open the shutters - as I was planning to do the same - I kept an eye out for where the terrain was relative to the ship. The landing strip was fairly visible, and looked about as well as I expected from one in the region. The approach angle wasn’t good, but it was never going to be.

After almost skipping over a small peak in the terrain, I cut the main thruster’s power - it was looking like it was on its way out, anyway - and put it into verts and frontals instead, trying to keep as much control over the ship as I could.

“EDI, please alert the nearest spaceport to our location. This thing’s not gonna fly again without a serious maintenance crew looking at it once we’re down.”

“Of course, Kira.”

I preferred letting her handle it, partly because I didn’t want to do it myself, but also due to being busy making the landing as smooth as possible. One kilometer to the surface.

“Hang tight! This one’s gonna be rough!”

500 meters. Cut the frontal thrusters, put all remaining power into the shields. Keep the ship as stable as possible. 200… 100…

I pulled the nose of the ship up just before the impact to lessen the force slightly, but there was still a very notable thud as the ship hit the ground, throwing all three of us out of our seats as it hit, spinning out thanks to the partly uncontrolled movement, the hull screeching in protest, while various panels and other things came loose on the walls.

The Cutter stopped its course after at least two kilometers of grinding across the remains of the strip, resting on it sideways. I shook off the confusion and stood up, then helped Silvia to her feet.

“Well, you know what they say about the landings you can walk away from.”

I took a better look around the bridge, and noticed a few smaller fires.

“So, what’s the damage?”, I asked EDI, kind of aware of what the answer would be.

“Damage to the lower hull is significant, and some decks are structurally unstable. I do not recommend entering them. Significant repairs will be required to allow the ship to take off again.”

“Pretty much as I expected.”

I looked back to Silvia.

“You in one piece? I’m gonna pay the armory a visit. If the distress beacon attracts visitors of the unwelcome kind, I’m not gonna stand around throwing curse words at them.”
