Elite roleplay: Off station

OFF STATION

Your ship, deep space, anything that is not happening inside the Citi Gateway or Ingaba...

General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

"Glad you’re back, I thought you had completely checked out… are you feeling fit enough to continue with the actual plan?"

I corrected the course and confirmed the receipt of the message. Then I turned to my passenger and continued:

“As soon as we’re in position, you have to dump some of the prepared junk, along with some of the cargo - there’s a small but impressive fireworks show ready which should distract from the launch of the drones - better safe than sorry, two instead of one, in case something goes wrong at the start… I’ll then simulate an emergency maneuver… and if everything goes well, the confusion will be enough for the drones to do their work undetected and undisturbed. They don’t need very long luckily, and once they deactivate themselves they look to scanners like any other floating debris.”

It was a daring plan, but one that could lead to the desired success. The fact that power generators were among the cargo, which had to be handled with some caution, added to the credibility, and it was common knowledge that even a small explosion on board could have devastating effects.

"The... prepared junk? Do you have a button for this?"

Because I didn't really have much of a clue what that meant. I did have one for how to do the cargo dumping thing - which I got busy setting up while waiting for the answer... a few power generator canisters on top of whatever the 'junk' was, that would hopefully do...

And a targeting solution for the recon limpet. Or two, however many were needed. I expected just one, but since the 'mission coordinator' wanted two, that would be it. All I needed to do now was push a few buttons... once I knew which one handled the secret ingredient to the surprise. To which I could also add a touch of my own, if the limpets themselves were not enough for security. I looked at my counterpart with a certain awaiting gaze, and slightly raised arms... maybe it would've been better to cover that aspect of the plan beforehand, but so far, there was no rush.

Our 'ghost contacts' were also relatively keen on remaining at their positions... and it didn't seem to be enough for a full Black Flight wing, unless the others were completely 'silent', and thus undetectable. If it was them, their reaction to this distraction getting set off was of greater concern.

"This button is the best thing since some bright spark inspired me to jettison biowaste over settlements…” I joked.

“But really, it’s an old smuggler’s trick, originally meant to delay or even prevent those pesky system authority checks by faking a dangerous situation. Look for a logo with a black swan, that’s the trigger. But hold your horses, wait until we’re a bit closer.”

I was piloting the ship, trailing behind the lumbering Type-9 ahead of us, inching ever closer. Soon, the ship in front would change course to slowly veer towards the docking bay, and shortly after, it would position itself just right - between us and the mega ship. For a brief moment, their scanners would only pick up one object - the perfect time for our covert operation.

As I manoeuvred, I felt the roar of the engines and the slight vibration under my feet, and the tension increased. It was all about the right timing. One more brief moment...
04 Jun 2024, 2:39pm
A logo with a black swan… finding it was a thing of its own, at first, until I realized it could be on an instrument panel or somewhere above me. And, of course, it was on one of the two that refused to cooperate with my big thighs. Or, rather, my oversized self refused to cooperate with them.

I could survive that for a few seconds. I held the corresponding panel down until it clicked in, trying to not mind how it squished the soft thigh. Lock seemed sturdy enough to resist my body wanting to retain its nice, round curvature.

If that logo held any kind of significance, I couldn’t tell. Given its purpose, I doubted it was anything like the black cat, though. Now… I just needed to wait to be told, when the right moment was.
04 Jun 2024, 6:27pm
As the spaceship ahead began to pivot towards the docking bay of the mega-ship, the crucial moment had arrived.

“Now, Kasumi! Hit the Black Swan first, then eject the cargo!” I shouted, fingers dancing across the console to kill the autopilot. The upcoming maneuvers, feigning irregularities, were best flown manually. I shot a warning glance at my passenger.

“Brace yourself. It’s about to get choppy, but that’s all part of the show.”
04 Jun 2024, 8:08pm
I did as prompted and pushed the weird swan button before some cargo followed. Whatever that would do. Target for limpets was locked, but I didn’t do that yet, not knowing if I or she was supposed to do that. But I did have time for a remark.

“I will survive. But my breast will not like it.”

A factually true statement, but I still surprised myself in how much of a factual, dry tone I managed to bring something so weird over. At least the suit would do its job in keeping those big funbags in place… mostly. They still carried a lot of mass behind them, comparative to their placement on the body. I could always help it with an arm… if need be.
05 Jun 2024, 12:21pm
I could feel the thrum of the engines through the deck plates as I swung the ship into a daring arc. Thanks to this maneuver, our ship literally spewed out the ejected cargo. The black swan effect did the rest and simulated a small explosion in the stern area of the ship, which was followed spectacularly but less threateningly by burning oxygen that formed a kind of bubble due to the weightlessness.

My heart was pounding, not from fear, but from the sheer thrill of the moment. With a rogue’s grin, I plunged us into the unknown, ready to dance with danger and come out on top.

"Mayday, mayday... this is the Gullveig... we have a.... situation.... an explosion in the cargo space..."

With that I cut the connection and shouted to my passenger to let go of the drones. It was now, or never.
05 Jun 2024, 1:02pm
I’d been warned, but to say I didn’t enjoy the maneuver regardless would’ve been something of an understatement. Luckily, those… ‘certain parts’ to my body were kept in place by whatever material the suit was made of, enough to do the thing of throwing out the two limpets. If one made it, the other would hopefully also deactivate. If not… I’d give it a helping hand.

Whatever was going on outside… I was more concerned with that certain thing on my chest trying to rebel against the confines of the fabric holding it. At least for the moment. Another reason I… kind of disliked how supercruise overcharge threw the ship around, because it had a similar effect on it.

I hated physics sometimes.
05 Jun 2024, 1:33pm
I flicked the flight assist switch off, giving the ship one last spin on its axis before shutting down the thrusters and slipping into silent running mode. From the outside, it probably looked like a spectacular tech malfunction, and it made it harder for anyone to scrutinize our vessel. Plus, it bought us a little extra time near the communication array.

The plan was simple... wait for those drones to hit their mark and do their thing - shouldn’t take more than a minute. Then, I’d power up all systems, crank our tumbling trajectory to max, and get us farer away from that behemoth and out of mass lock. With any luck, the FSD would be juiced up by then, ready for a quick jump to our pre-programmed destination. It helped some that the drive was engineered to need less time to be ready to jump.

“Looking good so far. Everything ok on your end? How are our little drone buddies holding up?”
05 Jun 2024, 1:48pm
I quickly took a look at the 'situation'... at least one of the drones had made it through. And the second one was there too, because apparently, someone had recently upgraded limpet navigation and collision avoidance. Likely as a result of being tired to see them slam into asteroids at full speed for absolutely no reason, over and over.

"It... looks like, they are both there."

Nothing from our 'friends' pretending to be ghosts, either. Still just observing, though, clearly, with eyes and sensors pointed this way, because something was actually happening. If they weren't Black Flight, they were probably quite curious about it... and would have their answer about it soon enough. Meanwhile, limpet number one was happily connected and working away, with number two idly floating nearby.

"Do you just want to, let the limpets do the thing, or should I add, a little extra?"

That being whether to shove one of my things into the mix through the link, too, or avoid it because it was potentially quite risky. But making the megaship's systems go haywire for a bit, before the malicious code was purged from it, or leaving a little spy worm, both sounded like fun ideas. The former more than the latter... both to activate only after we were gone, of course.
05 Jun 2024, 2:06pm
“Do what you can, but make damn sure both drones end up deactivated. And if possible, let that behemoth in front of us get suspicious only after we’ve made our jump.”

I planned to kickstart the systems with a wild acceleration, making it look more like a tech glitch or a brawl with the controls than a calculated flight. But once that FSD started humming, we’d be baring it all - that was something every scanner would notice.

As for whether they’d chalk it up to a malfunction or a well-timed maneuver, I hoped I wouldn’t have to rack my brain too hard. Behemoths like these had devastating firepower, but the good thing about them was that they took some sweet time to deploy their guns. With any luck, we’d be jumping out of here before anyone could say “ fire at will.”
05 Jun 2024, 2:29pm
I took that as my sign to do as I pleased… but the rational part of my brain prevailed, for once, so I just didn’t do anything but wait for the data transmission from the limpet. While doing so, the drone’s hacking progress displayed as a filling bar on the holo-display, I prepared a kill switch command for the second drone, and purge of the memory storage of both prior to their self-destruction. Leaving no traces behind, nothing to be tracked down to me or this ship.

Though the ship was still spinning, right now, it was more of a ‘stable’ spin without further thrust applied, so nothing on my body really wanted to ‘move’ anywhere. The only concern to have had was getting dizzy… and for that reason, I was keeping my eyes focused on the displays, not outside. As soon as the data transmission of the limpet - which would simply dump a record of comms logs into data storage - was complete, I’d send the self-destruct order… as unimpressive as it was for those small drones, because they just fried their own circuits. Very thoroughly.
05 Jun 2024, 3:05pm
The ship’s temperature was creeping up, but it would stay bearable for a good while longer. I double-checked our jump destination, just to be sure, because things were about to get real fast.

Then, I glanced at the display in front of me, showing the positions of other ships - as far as they could be made out. So far, no anomalies, just the Type-9 nearby gunning it to high heaven to get away from us.

Not much time had passed, and I figured that the other ships nearby were still busy trying to hail us or figure out what exactly had happened. By now, our own drones should be about ready. My hand rested on the main systems switch, and I turned to my passenger.

“What’s the status of the drones?” I asked, "Ready to dance with the stars, or are we about to tango with trouble?"
05 Jun 2024, 3:16pm
"They are... almost done."

Which was to say, the data link was about to be initiated, and it would be a matter of seconds then, if that. A ping shot through the cockpit to inform that the process was complete, and the limpet was transmitting back to the ship. The very moment that was done, I hit the 'Confirm' button on the kill switch, and... both drones 'disappeared' from the main display. I could only hope that did, in fact, mean they were both gone. It wouldn't stop either of us to carry on if it were traced back to us, but things were likely to be significantly easier without having Azimuth goons breathing down our necks at every step.

"There. It is done. We can go."

And I'd be very glad to. As well as to have this panel off my big thigh.
05 Jun 2024, 5:16pm
The moment I heard our drones were done, I slammed my hand down on the main switch. Instantly, the heat exchangers flung open and systems that were snoozing in standby sprang to life. I gunned the engines, alternating between left and right, making it look all haphazard and like a glitch. Overall, we were picking up serious speed, veering away from the Musashi mega ship.

It wouldn’t be long before we’d be far enough to kick the FSD into gear, charging up for the jump. That was the real nail-biter of our little escapade. I could feel beads of sweat forming on my brow from the tension, even though the heat exchangers were now giving us a chilly breeze in the cockpit.

“If we’ve got any hatches still open, now’s the time to snap them shut,” I said to my passenger. “This is it, the home stretch. Anything on the radar? What’s the word on our silent spectators?"
