Elite roleplay: Off station

OFF STATION

Your ship, deep space, anything that is not happening inside the Citi Gateway or Ingaba...

General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

"Uhhhh... Thank you," I grabbed the presented rifle stock and began slowly and methodically, by a series of little palm movements, pushing it into that little free space I've managed to create by really pressing myself against the walls of the metal box.

"Uh, I've heard that a lot. I mean, a lot. Even with the original gun. Mostly from people who were deeply insecure by themselves and, kind of... Projected their own issues onto others," I spoke, slowly proceeding with packing my weapon into the container along with myself, making that place even more cramped and restricting.

"But I grew fond of it, and I know how to use it well, to balance between pros and cons and so on. And, after all... It is a support weapon. And I'd like you to think more of that, rather than just 'that's a heck big gun'."

Once the rifle was equally deep in the container as myself, I grabbed the edges and, instinctively, squeezing my eyes shut tightly, made a final push, disappearing in the container. Inside, I had just enough space and freedom to pry the lid open after it closes on me, and get a hold of the edges to extract myself the same way I got in, once I should do so.

Ah, so glad that my limbs aren't getting numb anymore.

“Maybe I should say ‘overdoing it’.”, I cautiously remarked, after there was no more Meowers to be seen from outside the container. “Because you know, it just looks a bit overkill. Even if you adapted that weapon I have… I’m not sure it would be as long as I am tall. And you can probably guess, I know a thing or two about overdoing it.”

Because, of course, I would, given how ridiculous I looked nowadays… even if it was for the better, at least in regards to the mental. I decided to just drop the subject there because thinking a gun looked over the top - though I couldn’t recall what the previous one was - was not supposed to be anywhere near this deep of a subject.

“Whatever. Are you really going to stay in there unil I take off? That does not look comfortable.”

I wanted to peek in there, but the thing was a little too tall unless I were to use the mag boots to attach to the exterior at a point where my head looked over the edge. But I could probably still lower the lid on it by reaching upward… would just need to remember that I was not supposed to fully close it off.

There was a sort of metallic clicking sound as the final ‘escape pod’ was locked into place in the cargo rack, and the workers in charge of the task wandered off, with the cargo hatch closing off.

“Well, I guess we are ready soon, anyway. That was the last pod. Any last words?”

“I would like to ask your companion about something.”, EDI then interjected, kind of surprising me. “If she is willing, of course.”

“Uh. Well, go ahead… I, guess.” I knocked on the container exterior. “You catch that?”
15 Aug 2024, 5:14am
"Ergonomics," I'd shrugged if I could, and my voice sounded now, literally, as like I've been talking from the bottom of a barrel. "I needed a longer stock. Then, I looked at the sketches and thought that the whole gun now looks like a stump. And the balance issues, of course."

"And, uh... It is not exactly comfortable. But since I needed your help to get in, I guess, it's better for me to stay here. And, sure. Ask away. I'm not... exactly... in a position to object."
15 Aug 2024, 10:19am
“Ok, ok. Fine. It’s not like I can argue about a big gun, anyway.”

Especially not in this context. Or what would soon be a very explosive context.

“So, anyway… I guess, you can go ahead, EDI.”

“I merely wish to know if you are aware of your companion’s unique nature. However, as it is likely to be personal, I did not ask while the crew working on the ship were in a position to listen.”

I lifted a finger with my mouth open, but then just remained silent, deciding to let Ina do this particular part of the talking. Should have figured that the advanced sensors installed on some of my ships to work with my modified biology… and Thargoid-based biomechanical components… would pick up on someone that was, kind of not quite human any more, at least when it came to the body.

And we did spend a bit of time on that Phantom where I delivered some exposure about this latest round of Azimuth madness and bullshittery.
15 Aug 2024, 10:32am
"Ah, if you want to talk about guns, perhaps I might be amongst the best candidates. Not now though, since you're grumpy enough..." I wanted to joke about 'being grumpy enough to turn our entire load of explosives inert' but, perhaps, not the ideal moment since it was me who was stuck in a metal box. "Yeah, you're super grumpy."

Then, I replied to EDI.

"Yep," a short and factual statement first, but then decided to extend my reply.

"She is aware. Actually, I tried to give her the bullshit legend I usually feed to those who ask too many questions... Didn't work in her case. And I wasn't exactly happy about not telling the truth anyway."

"And I'm not trying to hide it from you either," I found myself smirking, yet, obviously, there was no way for anyone else to see it when I was that tightly stuffed into a cargo container. "You have too many instruments at your disposal to analyse. Instead, I'd like to say thank you for keeping this private."
15 Aug 2024, 11:00am
“I see. I was merely curious, but also assumed you wished for a certain privacy to be respected, given that Kira herself does not unnecessarily speak of her nature, even if it has become difficult to hide in recent months.”

EDI paused very briefly.

“She has also given me permission to use her real name. I am curious about the circumstances which have led to this situation, where such a body replacement was required, but the experiences I have made suggest that it would likely be an uncomfortable subject to speak about.”

Another short pause.

“I must say, I am impressed by the ability of the human mind to resist and adapt to such adverse conditions.”
15 Aug 2024, 11:16am
"It's never been a secret, and, even if I use the bullcrappy legend about the progenitor cells, which they honestly tried to apply first, this part remains the same."

"I blew up a generator. Voluntarily. Just like that," it was a surprise even for myself: how could I possibly make that fact sound casually, daily, almost funny. Yet, it was like that.

"Not the fusion core, of course, that could've made even the molecular analysis impossible, just a low-emission solid fuel burner, but nonetheless. Being, actually, in the same building, next to the said generator and its fuel supply enough for a few months. I survived, thanks to a lot of overlapping factors, and achieved what I wanted by creating that explosion, which I, honestly, didn't believe I could anyhow survive. Yet you may have already figured out the amount of damage I sustained."

“It is apparent, yes.”, EDI agreed. “A full body replacement would not be required in all but the most extreme circumstances… though I am curious about the factors which led to the dimensions that it has. It is certainly not ordinary.”

“But I have also had time to realize that some humans appear to like unordinary, even if it is highly impractical.”

Ina couldn’t see it, but that remark from EDI made me throw an annoyed glare at the nearest camera, with my hands placed on the hips in equally annoyed manner. And I fully expected giggling to start bursting out of that container.
15 Aug 2024, 11:49am
"Ah, the sweet sweet taste of overcoming problems we created for ourselves in the first place," I commented in a somewhat mockingly-triumphant manner and added a little giggle after that.

"I'd say, a whole chain, more than three decades long, of events of various levels of shittiness, led me to believe that being generally larger than average and physically resilient contributed greatly to my ability to survive. In fact, more than anything else. Perhaps, I was able to survive the generator blast because of the same feature."

"So, you said you're impressed by the ability of the human mind to resist and adapt. What you see now is... the result of constant resistance and adaptation. Instead of something I had to have, that physical feature of mine has slowly become something I like to have. Because I saw it working again and again, and helping me actively. So, when I got the chance... I decided to get the most of it, since, good chances are a very rare thing. Even that one, originally stemmed from something really bad and dark."
15 Aug 2024, 3:28pm
"I see. I am glad that you have managed to find something that makes you happy, as one of her friends. I assume that is why you are here now, as well, given the matter of the abduction."

EDI stopped talking for a second, as if to further reflect on that provided information.

"It seems that there may be some truth to the idea that going through negative experiences may sometimes lead to something positive. It appears to be what occurred, in both your cases, though I would have advised for a taller body structure with the same proportions, rather than increasing the size of the developed features of female anatomy."

"Because I would have liked that so much.", I remarked in a deeply sarcastic tone, pose still unchanged, unable to stop that from slipping out.
15 Aug 2024, 3:50pm
"She can't stand being right next to me now but, uh, okay. I've seen worse. Phah."

"See?" The change in my tone implied that I said that to Kasumi, and only being in a somewhat restricted space and invisible for everyone else stopped me from pointing my finger up into the air as I would've done under normal circumstances. "I can be nice and polite. Why the hecks those Azimuth schmucks keep doing everything to make me stop?"

"Also, just for peace of mind. I practised some short vacuum exposure, when nobody was around to see it. It's a little weird but nothing bad happened. I'll be fine here if you decide to cut the cargo life support off to make our surprise even more convincing."
15 Aug 2024, 4:03pm
"Can we just... move on to the thing that matters?", I let out in an annoyed tone. "Yes, I have a giant breast and you-know-what, and it's impractical, and I don't care. As I already said, more than once, just because this world is stupid and has too much fighting in it, isn't something to not make me want this when it's nice."

And very distracting under the right circumstances. Which these weren't. I breathed out deeply, as if to let out the bad air, and just conveniently ignored the accusation... even if there was some truth to it, caused by almost entirely outside circumstances. Which was why I did not want to think about it. Or, at least, certainly not now.

"Ask me about it later. For now, I just want to get that idiot out of there before those nutjobs get any ideas."

I moved back over to the 'Meowers Container' and peeked over the edge, only my head visible, which had to look interesting now without the accompanying curvature. And the sight looked about as ridiculous as I expected.

"The things Azimuth makes us do ...", I muttered, after going back down to the deck. "I'm going to leave that open until the carrier has jumped. Which it should... just about any moment, now."
15 Aug 2024, 4:20pm
"I'd say, no nutjobs, no potentially harmful ideas. And I'm here exactly for that. To delete the source of your concern."

Actually, I've been a bit worried too, since Kasumi had already caused some chaos around their installations and they may be on alert, which isn't exactly optimal if you want to rescue someone, not just plainly turn the whole place into a smoking crater. Yet there was nothing I could do to fix it, and the improvised plan we developed looked better than the alternatives.

"I'll let you know when I'm out of that box and far enough to be safe. Sending the transmission from within the facility might reveal me but that doesn't really matter if a big arse explosion sends a good chunk of that facility flying just a few seconds later. And, I guess, I, kind of, need to attract more of them to make your searches easier."
15 Aug 2024, 4:49pm
"Fine. You might also want to know that some Thargoids thought it was a funny idea to pull me out when we were leaving those wrecks and tell me they want to help. Whatever that is worth. Didn't seem like the kind that are currently doing you-know-what around here. But they better behave, anyway."

That was as much as I was going to say to that. Especially after the not-so-nice reminder just now, and feeling that this 'friend' of mine here was needlessly aggressive about Thargoids, generally. The carrier began to accelerate, as I could tell by feeling the deck move under my feet, making me remain silent until it exited the hyperspace portal again.

"I will also turn off life support, then. Since you think you're going to be fine without it. And those bastards are not going to know what hit them."
15 Aug 2024, 5:08pm
"Ow," I sound surprised a little. "No idea what they might want here. I remember they somehow helped you earlier... Anyways, if they attack me, I won't be surprised, and I generally don't like being shot at. But I promise that, today, the first thing I'd do in such a case is take cover and let you know, before trying to return fire."

"Who knows. If they really are from a different bunch, and not aggressive towards humans initially, then everything should be fine. Azimuth morons aren't humans, they're pieces of shit."
