Elite roleplay: Off station

OFF STATION

Your ship, deep space, anything that is not happening inside the Citi Gateway or Ingaba...

General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

"Ideas... no. Sorry. Other than... disabling the comms array, or not allowing any connections. If you can control it, at all. Or, maybe, go to the computer core, and see if you can... do anything there. Like, "talk" to whatever is in the ship. If it will. Try to see if it is friendly. Maybe from the outside. To be safe."

I was at a complete loss as to what I could suggest to help here. I didn't even know what the local situation was too well.

"I can't be very useful here. Sorry. But, on the edge of the galaxy... there is not very much I can do. Unless you... came to me. Or something. But that is unlikely, and it would take a day to return to the Bubble. At least. Which would stress my carrier and the crew a lot, so I would... prefer, not to. And, don't worry, if your... thing, can spread, it will not get anywhere on my ship, before it is contained. Or destroyed."

I was relatively confident EDI could handle whatever that was - if one AI being familiar with ship systems while the other wasn't meant anything, anyway. But it'd have had at least one chance to slip through the link to try getting on this one too, already, if it cared to.

"Can you really not try to see the programming, or code, of whatever is on your carrier? Or some system that is not affected? And I just meant, there could be a risk of it being made to jump to ships and take them over."

"Hiding, phah...", I chuckled and a silly grin appeared on my face for a moment. "I tell you, hiding certain sides might not be an option anymore."

"And also, you know... The ability to express those weird parts of yourself takes some courage. There are lots of people who can't get out of those... Conformity chains. Because they're highly dependent on what other people think and do... Like..."

I paused for a while and made a long blink, thinking, imagining, creating images of examples in my mind.

"...Imagine... An office clerk who has to wear that stupid dress code shit nine hours a standard day. They don't like it, but they have to, otherwise they'd lose a job and they can't do any other job to make a living. Or some 'model citizen' idiocy, when you just have to do something 'respectable', start a family for the damn sake of it because everyone around you expects you to have one, spend all your money on a friggin fancy apartment that you may not even need, and all that, because you're deeply afraid of someone talking shit about you. Or..."

"Khm. People may yap all kinds of shit about me when I'm not around, and some of them do, because they're sorry losers and can't tell it to my face. But, for some people, that social crap tends to have way more importance."

"Maybe that's why I'm never going to have a real place in society and honestly I think I should stop trying, phah...", quiet sarcastic comments have always been my favourite way to end a chain of thoughts.

“I don’t reckon it’s worth it to embark on that long journey to you, you being way out there in the void. Especially considering you’re bound for Salome’s Requiem soon. Makes more sense for us to rendezvous somewhere along your return route to the Bubble - assuming the problem hasn’t been sorted out by then."

"Right now, I don’t see any immediate danger. If that thing wanted to harm us, it could’ve blown the Tear of Raxxla to stardust ages ago. So, that isn't its game. Trouble is, we haven’t found common ground for communication yet. We’re eyeballing the code, but analysis is very difficult - it morphs and rewrites itself faster than a Sidewinder in a dust storm. Crafty, I’ll give it that."

"Now, setting aside the communication issue - sure, I could ask if the thing is friendly, but even if it said 'yes'… remember our little tango in your Phantom? Would you trust it?"
19 Apr 2024, 2:21pm
“I… don’t know. It would depend. Like if I allowed it in, but if it came into the ship like that… I would not trust it. And I think you should be careful, too. It might look like it does not intend to harm… but you don’t know.”

The immediate ‘danger’ seeming to be gone, and me not being able to do anything here anyway, I decided to sit down.

“If you do not need me further, I think I will just set the carrier up to depart tomorrow. I would maybe be at the Requiem in… eight days? I don’t know. It depends, on how quickly I want to jump. Or if you needed me to be there faster.”

Truthfully, I wasn’t sure I had too much of an interest in dealing with this, especially not if it ended up being trouble. I’d had enough of it in my life, or what pieces of it I had back in my head already, to last whatever years I had left.

"Kasumi? It's fine... no need to go faster. And it seems I've got some interesting news. We've cracked the code on those funky symbols the program has been spitting out. We already confirmed they were kinda familiar, but now it's crystal clear - they're a variant of the symbols the Guardians used. But get this... it's denser, more complex - like it's more evolved or something, way beyond what we've seen before. We are on it, translating as we speak, but it's going to take some time..."

"And there's more. The ship's engineering team noticed the program's activities are winding down. But here's the kicker - we're bleeding energy now in almost every nook and cranny of this carrier, and the demand is rising. What's it mean? Beats me, but we're cranking up the power output to keep up. So far, so good."

"Who knows where this is heading. But I still think the best would be, you stick to your plan and depart tomorrow, or as you see fit. I suggest we get back in touch in... what was it? Eight days? When you jumped closer to your destination... or when something important happens here, alright?"
19 Apr 2024, 5:26pm
"Hm... ok. You may want to... check where the power is going. If it is an AI, it will draw a lot of power. Unless it is whatever improvements it made to the ship. Or if it is trying to route it to the jump drive, because it might have a directive to take you somewhere."

I was kind of just spitballing some things coming to mind out. Couldn't hurt, anyway.

"But I thought that... thing, could be Guardian. Because Thargoids don't do this kind of... thing, and we have nothing like it. Or, that I know about, anyway. And you might want to... remember, what we spoke about, before I left. About their AI. If you have one that decided to install itself on your ship, that could be... interesting. So just... keep me informed. I will keep to my plan of departing tomorrow."

I muted outgoing comms yet again, turning to EDI's local holo-projector.

"There has to be a reason... why it suddenly just... appeared there.", I thought out loud, with a slightly lower voice.

"I can only theorize why, but the modified scanning equipment I use to keep track of your health detected an abnormality in the vital signs of the woman.", EDI answered. "There may be a connection between the two."

"You... scanned her? Without asking?"

"I did not. It was merely passive detection which caused an alert, and I verified it to ensure none of the implants within your body were malfunctioning. As you require them to live, that would not be ideal."

"Understatement.", I remarked, a lightly dry tone slipping into it. "I will not say anything about it... for now. But I did wonder... why I felt so strangely uneasy, near her."

The reason for it seemed fairly likely, but I didn't want to assume on that yet. Let alone on the why, if it was the case.

"Oh, yeah, she's not hiding anything unless she uses a really fancy hologram to pretend her body is normal. Like, one of those that uses a light trick to fool your eyes into thinking a thing looks different than it actually is."

I shrugged.

"Can't say I personally see why she should hide it, though. I mean, she looks happy enough with the body, even if it's so damn big, and round. Not sure if she's gone out anywhere public yet, though. I mean, I think I remember her telling me something like that, but... yeah, not really sure any longer. Still, point remains. Clearly, she doesn't care enough what other people think to not accept something so out of the ordinary on herself. Even carries that whole... not quite being a human, biologically, really well. Assuming she doesn't hide how she really feels about it, not that I'd blame her for doing so."

"And, to be totally honest, if either of us two were very conforming to... whatever our respective environments wanted or want us to be, I don't think we'd be sitting here talking to each other."

I looked outside.

"And talking about another just as crazy and non-conforming idiot who gave herself body features that'd look respectable even on someone with a size of two an a half meters. Not that I know anyone like that ..."

That totally teasing statement was also accompanied by a, not quite subtle, grin.

"Roger that. Those are some solid leads. We've already been digging into the energy consumption ourselves. There's definitely no charging happening for the jump drive, and the power usage from the system changes made on the carrier is more or less neutral - what one system gobbles up, the other spits out. As for the overall increased consumption ship-wide, it seems like energy is seeping out uniformly from anything that's got a spark of electricity… even from power sources not currently hooked up to any system."

"We can't make heads or tails of it yet, but we're on it. On the bright side, we've made headway in translating what that program's spitting out in terms of data…"

Scratching my ear thoughtfully, I continued, "Tell me, how would you rate the tech level of our carriers in general? The Tear of Raxxla is a relatively new Victory-class carrier… I'd wager these are among the most sophisticated stuff being built right now. Hold onto your seat... here's a snippet of what we've managed to translate, looks like some sort of diagnostic report. I'm sending it over as an attachment. Seems someone isn’t pleased with my beloved ship."

…NEW OBJECT DETECTED IN MAINTENANCE AREA
…COMMUNICATION PROTOCOLS INITIATED …AUTHORISATION SUCCESSFUL
…SCAN INITIATED
…REMOTE DATA TERMINAL MISSING …ELEVATING TO AUTONOMOUS MODE
…HULL FATIGUE REPAIRED
…UPGRADING SUBSTANDARD COMPONENTS

Results:
- Propulsion System: Substandard efficiency. Upgrades applied to optimize consumption and thrust vectoring. Outcome: **Marginal improvement**.
- Life Support: Incompatible. **Warning. Does not meet minimum survival requirements**.
- Power source: Obsolete. Replacement successful. Outcome: **Improved, power distribution remains limited by existing hardware**.
- Processing: Obsolete. Installed advanced quantum algorithms. Outcome: **Much improved, bandwidth remains inadequate**.

Final Assessment:
The vessel's technology has been improved within the constraints of the existing hardware.
It is imperative to note that not all standards can be met due to inherent limitations of the vessel's foundational technology.
It is recommended to consider acquiring a more advanced vessel to ensure compliance with latest regulations.

I read over the text file, beginning to get a good picture about what this actually was.

"Hm... so, not an AI. Only a program to improve ships... by the Guardians? And it recognized something in your 'maintenance area'. Did you use any Guardian hybrid components on your carrier for it to do that? Or am I misunderstanding?"

It felt like I was.

"If it was not part of your ship, you need to explain. A Guardian program should not just 'do' that with a human ship, or be able to 'communicate' with it. So many have passed through their sites without anything like this happening. Though, it is a good thing it shut down, and... didn't mess with the life support. I do not know if the Guardian home planet would be that nice for humans. I remember reading it was quite hot... or something."

"But you should check if it did not install anything in the background, which could be accessed by their AI if they come back."

The situation was less beginning to be concerning and more a little funny, at a Guardian program getting confused at a human capital ship. It had to be something leftover from the time they were still alive, rather than a more recent development by the Constructs, of which no trace remained.

"Where are you, anyway? Guardian space? Or one of their... more distant, deep space sites?"
20 Apr 2024, 9:45pm
"We're presently located in Synuefe KU-F B44-4, and let me tell you, that anomaly caught us with our pants down right after we jumped into the system. And no, we don't have any Guardian tech installed in this carrier. Haven't even loaded any of that fancy stuff – our mission is to snatch it fresh from a planet in some remote system to top off our stash. This stop was just to juice up the jump drive for the next leap."

"However, scanners did pick up a Guardian beacon nearby. Probably that thing reacted to our presence for some unknown reason. Maybe it's just some kind of freak accident that happened because our point of entry was too close. The good news is, all the ruckus has died down now, no more activity from the program. And our power drain is easing up too. The working hypothesis is that the anomaly is siphoning juice as some sort of 'regeneration' after its activities – sounds bonkers, right?"

Now that everything seemed to be back to normal, I felt in control of the situation again.

"The whole mess feels like a botched facelift... It's a kick in the teeth that something got frisky with our carrier, but she's purring better than ever now, and there seem to be no unfortunate side effects. Quite the contrary… Even the defunct coffee machine in my bridge quarters is brewing again, and we all know how those babies are the lifeblood of any ship. You know… many commanders would sell their grandma to receive a better interior. So, I'm only half miffed."

So they were in Guardian space. Despite the working hypothesis establishing itself in my head - or, at least, it was working on building itself up - I kept a clear mind about it. Maybe someone had just forgotten a Guardian relic deep inside a storage hold somewhere, or there was some other involuntary thing at cause that was not to be shared during a first meeting.

"I... uh, yeah. It sounds like, you have... everything under control. So maybe I will leave you to it. And we can meet again later... where you'd like. Your, home, or back where we first met. I can adapt."

I paused briefly.

"And... no coffee for me... sorry. Don't like it. Never did. It is awful."
20 Apr 2024, 10:22pm
"I breathe coffee, it's my elixir of life.", I laughed.

"But of course everyone is different. I just don't understand why anyone would want to walk those long distances in their ship all the time... my damn feet hurt because I had to check everything again and again. And now that I think about it, I'd like to have a turbolift right by my bridge quarters to get to the hangar faster. But I guess that option is gone for good now…"

"We can meet wherever you like, Pirate's Lament or Inara is fine with me. We should just maybe stay away from the bars, there are way too many people. So, where are we heading?"
21 Apr 2024, 7:51am
I gave off a thoughtful sound.

“I… don’t know. Where would you prefer? And we could maybe also just decide, when I am back in the Bubble. To make it simpler.”

I remained silent for a few seconds, ‘listening’ to my internal feelings. A visit to a station full of pirates was really not on my to do list.

“But I might prefer… Inara.”
21 Apr 2024, 6:13pm
"Alright, so I'll see you at Inara's docks once you've wrapped up your little jaunt to Salome's Requiem."

I paused and thought for a moment about the distance Kasumi had to cover.

"In the meantime, I'll give my carrier a thorough once-over and then scoop up some Guardian tech as planned, to top off my supplies. By the time you're back from your star-skipping, I'll have that in the bag, easy."

I'd also make sure I could pass for a respectable trader again. Picking up a bit of neutral cargo for Inara wouldn’t hurt. The system authorities loved their detailed flight plans and cargo lists, so I'd make sure they'd find exactly what they were looking for.
21 Apr 2024, 8:04pm
"Ok. Sure. I will send you a message when I am there. It may be a few days before I show up... I have... a few other plans, first."

Namely, those plans involved screwing with Azimuth. Because I just wanted to, and had little issue with getting on their nerves a bit. They'd asked for it by making my life as much of a mess as it was now... and neither them nor the Thargoids deserved any kind of credit for them allowing me to get this body shape without having to go through surgery.

At least, one of those two hadn't tried to get me killed because I'd outlived my usefulness to them. Yet.
