Elite roleplay: Off station

OFF STATION

Your ship, deep space, anything that is not happening inside the Citi Gateway or Ingaba...

General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

“If things go wrong, could I, maybe… be there, too? I don’t want to be alone again.”

I wasn’t sure why I said again. Maybe it was a distant remnant of some memory I used to have.

“But, I… understand, if you wouldn’t want to risk drawing them. To me. And it… would be difficult to hide this.”

I pointed to the back of my head, by moving a hand there. Luckily, anything that was possibly there was concealed under a - relatively thin - layer of hair. And I… hadn’t bothered to try looking at any superficial components of the implant liable to be located there. It was something best not known, as far as I was concerned.

“Or maybe I could stay somewhere… not too far away. But without me knowing where you are, only other people. And you could visit sometimes.”

A silly idea occurred to me. Something to draw the subject away from… this.

“I could build a house on an ammonia world. And a shelter for a ship. What do you think?”

I could talk about that issue of the idiot Salvation later. When the mood lifted itself a little, and it was simpler to rant and get annoyed at, without being too deep of a subject.
29 Feb 2024, 2:41pm
"Ow, of course you could. If you want to keep your distance between yourself and the rest of our insane world, I guess there is a place for you in that community," even knowing she couldn't see that, I smiled. "They're... Almost like a small independent nation, of people who fled from superpowers for their personal reasons. Now mixed with war refugees, many of which would probably stay since they have nowhere else to go. Up to, like... Fifty thousand people in total and counting."

"We, AXDF, help them with anti-xeno defence, since we aren't affiliated with any of the existing powers too. We maintain a small base nearby and work closely with their own militia. In return, they provide us with recon data, ship maintenance, recruits sometimes, and generally a place for our people to live. And... They weren't always living in those metal boxes. But, we had to leave the town. You know why."

"Pfffff...", a long-drawn tired exhale escaped my mouth, "I understand why people hate the Thargoids as a species. Because the only Thargoids they had seen were attacking their towns."

"And... What? A house on an ammonia world?.. That sounds crazy to me. If you want a distant house, on a planet that, for some reason, isn't capable of supporting human life... It's way easier to find something atmosphereless at all."

"Still sounds weird because you could simply drop your anchor on one of the thousands of Earthlikes around and nobody would ever find you anyway, and you don't have to worry about space settlement stuff like air supplies, airtight construction, or even wearing a suit to go outside. That community I live next to acts the same way. They had just built that town in the border-space next to the Pleiades and kept quiet about its location... Unless you're simply into the aesthetics of ammonia planets. Or want to live somewhere hazardous. Not that I criticise your idea, I just find it extra weird."
29 Feb 2024, 3:08pm
“I mean …” A bit of a smile at that dumb idea appeared on my face. Not that I was quite sure it could be seen. “I am only half-human. And the docs ran a weird experiment where they found a thing in my body could turn my blood into ammonia. So maybe i could live there. But it was just a stupid idea. Something where humans could live as well seems better too, for… most of the time.”

“… but if there were ever friendly Thargoids, they would be able to visit there. Maybe.”

I shook my head. Anything like that was too far removed, if it ever were to happen, to really be able to consider it.

“I would like somewhere to stay, that isn’t me on my own, if we have to leave… here.” I pointed at the floor, meaning ‘the Bubble’. “Most people would not want me near them. Because I am… you know. But if we win this… conflict, is maybe the better word… I don’t know if I want to be out there either. Too many people hate Thargoids even without a reason. Though, I could just come back to… this place, then.”

I - slowly - heaved myself off the chair, which had to look quite interesting in its own right, and moved to one of the couches. Picking the wide one instead of the one-seaters to have comfortable, or at least more, space for my hips. I wondered for a second why I hadn’t bought wider single-seaters to put into this apartment, but didn’t ponder it too much longer when I recalled that I had a weird liking to shoving myself into one that was standard size. Maybe I could do that, as a demonstration just for my visitor.

Everything was so great about this body. And it wasn’t even fat either, it just had completely oversized curves. It could also serve as a source of sudden entertainment, too, without direct physical contact.
29 Feb 2024, 3:48pm
Kasumi's statement had me thinking for a moment, the moment I masked behind observing her moving from the chair to the couch and noticing that she definitely has that basic movement relearning phase squared out already. Maybe our VR experiments before served as a good initial training. And, honestly speaking, that was a spicy show of its own.

"Phehehehe," I finally replied jokingly, after turning to sit at the same spot but now facing her, "You definitely had some good VR movement training before you... reached that form."

Nah, not now. Like, I knew she was 'half-human' already and that definition was too vague anyway, maybe she meant the same, not the result of her recent transformations.

"And living in the ammonia atmosphere... Sounds wild. Really wild. Like, maybe that... thing of yours also stands behind the skin colour change. Or whatever. Looks like the implant desperately wanted to sustain your life, or... Or make you... 'Compatible' somehow? Ah, no idea. And I'm no doctor anyway."

"But if you want to live with more humans around, then I guess ammonia planets aren't your choice. And... Whilst there are lots, awful lots of arseholes around, not every human is an arsehole. Many people treat Azimuth experiment victims as experiment victims, since the stuff happened against their will, so there's a big chance of you being treated like that as well. Like..."

My stare wandered around aimlessly for a few moments as I picked up appropriate words.

"Like, how I see you. You're a human, born human, and you were subjected to this mad shit against your will. It might've made you less human physically, so maybe you can't be classified as a specimen of 'homo sapiens' anymore, having that big slice of your biology modified, but that doesn't mean you can't live in human society and be treated like a part of it. You look almost human. Hells, even I look 'almost human' now, but there are lots of different people, humans, around. And many of them are absolutely okay with people who look and behave differently as long as it doesn't harm anyone. Those who aren't... Are arseholes we both shouldn't waste our time on."
29 Feb 2024, 4:13pm
I turned my head to her, raising an eyebrow.

“What do you mean, you look ‘almost human’?”

Because I’d been told this was human but the result of a weird accident, that result being two point five meters of human.

“And… I see myself like that. Human. Because of the way my… head, works. I don’t think like a Thargoid… however they think. Even if I have their… whatever it is, in my body. I forgot the word. But I don’t know why I would want to live in a place Thargoids do. Unless they wanted me to walk one of their ships.”

My tone was a mixture of ‘Don’t have a clue’ and ‘Don’t really care because I can live in human environments just fine’. If I ever wanted to walk around and explore the surface of an ammonia world, then maybe this would come in useful to reduce how much I needed to prepare for it. But it wasn’t on my to do list currently, or very far down on it at least.

“I want to know something else. Seo said my… accent, sounds different to before. Have you noticed a difference?”
29 Feb 2024, 5:11pm
"Like, you know, humans don't normally grow that tall," I raised my arm above my head for a short moment and then shrugged, "There are records of some rare individuals going over two point six, two point seven, but that's a result of mutations and other health problems, and unviable for an average human lifespan... What do we have now, around 120-something."

"And, throughout the entire life, they suffer greatly from issues with the skeleton, muscles, cardiovascular stuff too... And, mostly, they're much, to say, thinner. Under normal circumstances, it might be absolutely impossible for a human being to grow like that. Yet, my body was broken so badly it accepted an amount of progenitor cell shots enough to make it think I'm a kid again and start growing."

"So, lots of medical details I can't really understand. Pfffff...", I made a long-drawn exhale after running over the topic fast enough for my brain to switch onto another one before it started hitting me with a proverbial stick of guilt and self-loathing.

"And yeah... I don't know if there are any 'requirements'," time for another air quotes, with quite an ironic expression, "to be considered human, and any 'official documents'," ...and another one, since the sentence itself was full of irony, "to shove it into faces of those who believe you aren't."

"A human could... To say, want to become a dog. Or a fox. Undergo some weird surgeries in order to make them look like one, even maybe for growing hair, as close to a fox fur as they may have, all over their body. Does it make that human a fox? I highly doubt it. That creature might go as 'a human turned into a fox' or 'a fox that was a human previously', but not a biological, natural kind of fox."

And my lips stretched into a wacky grin while I was imagining that.

"Your case is even more simple. You were born human, but then was subjected to some real shit. Some people have their limbs replaced by cyber-prosthetics but they are still human. In the dawn of organ transplantation medicine, some humans had received animal organs because there was no human replacement available. And so on... You name it."

"And, what about your accent..." I narrowed my eyes, thinking, "I don't really know much about Asian types of accents. And, months ago, you told me that you have one for, like, normal speaking and you use another one to hide your identity from Azimuth arseholes and I, kind of, forgot which one... But, yeah, I can't really remember. I'm generally awfully bad at recognising different accents."
29 Feb 2024, 7:04pm
"Hm. I thought... whatever."

I was beginning to feel a little doubtful about that "progenitor cell" story. It seemed unlikely such a mechanism even had the risk of causing this to occur, if it was widely used, and my brain was at least functional enough to recognize that... even if I didn't know or remember what those things were before now. Still, I decided not to go into it further, for the moment.

"I just wanted to know if you recognized what Seo did. But maybe she knows better. She has a... very noticeable accent, I think. But I don't know if I recall Earth history well enough to say where from. Or that I used two different... 'voices'."

I paused for a moment.

"And why would people want to turn themselves into an animal?"
29 Feb 2024, 7:20pm
"Hmmm," I scowled for a moment, being confused a little. "Nnnnope, sorry. I'm too bad with recognising accents, especially Old Earth Asian. It has to be too obvious, and even then I fail to tell which exact culture it belongs to."

"But, you used two different voices, that thing I remember," I pointed a finger at Kasumi, "one of them sounded completely different, and another one was, like... A halfway between that first and what you have now. And you could freely switch from one to another while speaking. Like actors do. Or those spies from old tales. You used one to hide from Azimuth."

"People turning into animals... Phah! There are some... Pfffff...", I had to take a few moments long pause to suppress my giggling, "Some individuals... Who'd like to become animals. Retaining human intellectual capabilities, of course. A rare oddity, I'd even say a kink. But certainly a funny one. They also like to wear full body suits to resemble those animals. Mostly dogs and foxes. Never saw a Thargoid body suit though, but the idea of it is... Terribly weird kind of funny, and, therefore, absolutely curious, phah."
29 Feb 2024, 7:26pm
"I... don't understand that. Maybe, I don't need to."

And that was all I really cared to say on the subject. It was, in some weird way, making me a little uncomfortable.

"I think I am just going to stay with one... 'voice', or accent, now. People know who I am. And maybe... I just don't want to hide. It would be tiring. But I will keep using Kasumi as my name. It is what I first remembered. And... who I am now. Maybe. Or mostly."

I still thought about whether to say that the 'old me' still existed within the implant. But that... was not an easy thing to bring up, let alone explain.
29 Feb 2024, 7:53pm
"Yeah," I nodded. "I noticed that in your more recent publishings. That you've chosen to be called Kasumi all the time. I knew some people who wanted to be called differently, and some of them just didn't want to go through all those tedious mind-and-arse-numbing legal procedures required for a name change. All those licences, insurances, property, bank accounts... That might take weeks. Ugh."

That... 'I knew some people' thing have made me think. How many people do I really know? Not just their faces, their habits and their birthdays. How many people can I really call my 'friends'? Or... What that 'friendship' is, exactly. And, it seemed like Kasumi was the only person outside of the camp that maintained any level of connection to me. Others... Have gone their ways.

Maybe it was noticeable, a few seconds which I spent staring vacantly at somewhere with my face slowly turning a little sad.

Silently, I got up from the floor and slowly walked to the couch she was sitting on, and sat next to it, carefully, not shaking the whole thing, my shoulderblades and upper back against the outer surface of its side, and head thrown back to lay on the armrest.

"Hey, Kasumi... Phah, I'd totally like to call you Kas now but I remember you don't like it," I started quietly, on a 'private talk' volume even if there was nobody around. "What is it like, to be someone's friend? Do you call me yours? I'd like to call you my friend but I'm afraid I don't know what it is."
29 Feb 2024, 8:12pm
“I still have ‘Kira’ as my ‘main’ name… but maybe I don’t want it to be used much now. Seo refuses to use anything else, so I had to accept it.”

A bit of annoyance slipped into my tone, even if that behavior from Seo was not badly meant in any way. Then… I looked over this figure sitting next to me. Legs, chest, arms… stopping just short of the face. There was still something just uncanny about a human that big, but then, maybe that’s how other people regarded me and my big female features too.

“I… already said, I don’t mind friends. As long as you remain nice, and don’t start to kill Thargoids without a reason. I think I said, anyway. But… am I already there? I don’t know.”

I’d strongly felt like shrugging - and still did, finding it really difficult to suppress the reflexive gesture, when it just didn’t seem appropriate for the moment, or a question that deep.
29 Feb 2024, 9:04pm
"Hmmm..." I shrugged, a little, "Before they got you, we had some talks about quite personal things, something you can't share with a random stranger or just a colleague or whatever. Something you can tell only to a person who can listen and understand you. And keep secrets if needed."

"And...", pausing for a second, I looked at her face, as much as it was possible from that position and with some... obstacles in the way. "...As far as I think now, you were the only person, other than my dear one, with whom I could talk like that. I don't want to lose it."
29 Feb 2024, 9:15pm
"Well... maybe it is fine.", I replied.

"It might be nice to know someone who I could... meet, out there." I paused for a moment, remembering Jana. "Two, actually. I almost forgot. But Seo has to stay here, I think, to be safe from Azimuth. And maybe the Thargoids. I don't know if they know about her."

I decided to stand up, suddenly, overcome by the attraction of one of the single-seaters, which probably gave Ina a good view of my really big backside. And it was for no other reason than to literally drop myself into it, the whole thing creaking as my weight landed on it in an instant, the fabric also giving off noise as the arm rests were forcibly shoved aside by my mass. And, of course, the whole thing was accompanied by a generous breast bounce.

"This is too fun.", I, quite freely, remarked.
29 Feb 2024, 11:40pm
There was something mildly abrasive in Kasumi's decision to get up and move to another couch as soon as sat right next to her, yet I tried to suppress it, and the following show of her literally squeezing herself into the poor one-seater was actually helpful in that matter.

"Pffff... Phah! Now I'm thinking maintenance shafts. Really thinking! I guess, those sofas and chairs aren't going to last long... Or, water park tubes like the ones you were through in the VR sim."

Then, for a moment, a picture of my funny custom chair flashed behind my eyes. That insane contraption created by our techs, made of several normal chair seats and thick metal bars. Such a memory immediately subjected me to hardly resistible giggling.

"You totally have to see the chair in my office... Phah, that's some insane engineering. I'll send you a pic. I bet it was a piece of ship hull reinforcement before, pffft!"

Then, however, that little irritating abrasive thought managed to find a way. Or maybe a part of me thought it'd be better to vocalise it, without notifying the 'conscious me'.

"And... You know, if you aren't feeling comfortable with me being around, I may go. But I'd like to stay for a little while longer. To talk about more things. Some of them being important."
29 Feb 2024, 11:56pm
"I did not get up because of you.", I told Ina in a casual, unconcerned way, leaning back in a relaxed way, while thinking of crossing my legs to further show that. As much as I could, at least. "I was playing with the thought of dropping into this, and maybe making a show, for you, for a little bit. The thought won over me not wanting to stand up. And ..."

I looked down at how I was squeezed in here.

"I think they will survive. I usually do not drop myself into them, or even the big one. I'm... not sure their legs could take my weight very well."

I blushed a little again. While aware of my weight, it was still a bit of a touchy subject.

"But I do still have to squeeze into this. And I would like to see that chair. The one I need to fly ships in is... very wide. Wider than my body, even. Because it... compresses. You might have noticed, when I am sat somewhere less soft. But you don't need to go anywhere."

I was certainly a good bit less uncomfortable, now. I couldn't yet tell if it'd ever go away, but it certainly was nowhere near close to being as unsettled as when this sight first entered my eyes.

"Oh, and no maintenance tunnel or vent adventures for me. Not unless I really need to."
