Elite roleplay: Off station

OFF STATION

Your ship, deep space, anything that is not happening inside the Citi Gateway or Ingaba...

General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

"Yeah, it's uhhhhhhhhhhh" bryan maintained the note while waving his hand at the cupboard as if he was trying to summon the tool to his hands via magnetism. His hand roamed around the cupboard for two to three seconds before he found where he left the tool. "Here!" Bryan finished acting like a man lost in a dark room and grabbed the tool and held it out towards Leif.

"So. This'll take a couple of minutes." Bryan said nodding towards the FSD. "And I already told you a bit about myself back at the bar so how 'bout hearin a little bit of your story?" Bryan asked.

"You're poorly organized, no way you're going anywhere as a mechanic," Leif spoke in a rough, high voice, only to turn into laughter.

"Yeah, my master was a bit special, I'd say. That was the first step of my career: mechanic. I've seen ships flying alot as a kid, my school wasn't too far from the spaceport, and my need to understand things got me thinking: 'Hey, why don't you become mechanic. You work on those ships and eventually get to fly them.'"

Leif leaned on the wall as he watched Bryan starting to work on the FSD, and continued:

"So I found a small workshop aboard Azeban Orbital. Boss of that place was said master, and he took me in with some doubts. Some of them rightful, about others I was able to prove him wrong. But he is the one that started off my flight career. I didn't only learn how to repair most damages - well, except FSD stuff because that always has been witchcraft to him - but also how to run inspections, which includes flights. While at first I was only the one keeping an eye on the diagnostic computer, I've been able to become the pilot. And I loved flying."

Sinner's Inn, Gaffney Ring - Muchihiks

Kyla sat back at a table in the busy bar, slouching. She was accompanied by a man in his early thirties with greasy long hair and a clean shaven face. He pointed to her empty glass in front of her.

"Sure I can't hook ya up with another drink?" He said.

Kyla shook her head. "This was supposed to be about business. The job's been done, you paid me, we had a drink."

Kyla looked down at her dataslate as it beeped.

Olive Grove

Distract Idris

She looked back up at the man and grinned. "And that is my cue to leave." She stood up and turned to the exit. "Thanks for the credits though."

Kyla waded through the busy station with a brisk stride. She frowned as the shuttle took her back to her hangar where Moonshot was docked.

I'm really going to do this, aren't I? She thought as she paid a dock worker for the fuel. How do I know this isn't one big ruse that will get me into trouble again?

She breathed out a heavy sigh as her Cobra lifted out of the hangar and the docking clamps released. I just hope her mistress doesn't pick up on the messages before I get there.

She boosted out of the mailslot, pointing to the Inara system and engaged her Frame Shift Drive. I also hope I'll still have all of my limbs attached to me after this.

She picked up her dataslate off the dashboard beside her pilot seat and sent a quick reply to Apollonia before the FSD finished charging.

On my way.

Jubei sat back in his dark green Fer-De-Lance. After a successful mission the inquisitor would usually head back to Kamadhenu for a debrief with Gideon, however a message on the public boards caught his eye. He's seen it many times before when working with the ISA, usually from abused Imperial Slaves. A coded message in plain sight, a cry for help.

He traced back to the Inara system, not too far away from where he was.

"Veronica was there recently," he said aloud to himself. "She went to a new place that got popular recently. That's as good of a place as any to start."

The inquisitor punched in the rout for Inara and charged the Frameshift Drive.

Leaning over, he reads the K-cast sent by Jubei and makes for a reply.

Yes, that is Apollonia. Marra's confident, aid and lover. She recently dispatched a plea for help. Be advised, she is not to be trusted. Your not thinking about helping her are you? Do require assistance?

Erinia took off from Shen Terminal in Guuguyni and plotted a random course away from the system. She definately needed a break. After 3 days of continued bounty hunting and making millions of credits by killing illegal slavers "I deserve this." She thought. Still... she couldn´t help but feel a little guilty. Even one day away from hunting was one day less to make money. And Erinia certainly had an... exquisit taste that needed a lot of credits.

She aligned the Mordrema and engaged the imperial Couriers FSD.

Erinia sighed "Here goes." she mumbled to herself.

4....3...2...1...engage.

The ship entered the frame shift and left Guuguyni behind.

"Breaking news from GalNet as reports have been confirmed that Sanctis' senseless aggressions in the 2nd Southern Galactic Quadrant are having significantly adverse effects upon the Karkan people. As Sanctis remains determined to negatively influence its neighbors through piracy, massacre of defense forces, assassinations of civilians, and UA bombing of orbital stations, they have allowed their home system to fall into anarchy. Seeing an opportunity for revolt against their absentee landholders, the criminal organization known as the Brothers of Karka have risen up and taken Chandler Station - and thereby control of Karka - from Sanctis. This reporter wonders when Sanctis leadership will realize that their continued wars in foreign lands have done nothing but bring hardship to the people of Karka."

Balmus - A 5

Across the fields came the sound of boots. Claire is stood next to the window looking into the dark room. Light gleams from the moving crowd, it stirs shadows in the room, disturbing a blonde haired woman from the corner where she sat dozing.

Claire slides down to her knees, as though in defeat. The closer they came the slower her breath. But she keeps her eyes open, observing the blonde's effort to lift her head. There was a bloody patch between her bangs keeping them apart. Before their eyes could meet, attention turns back to the approaching commotion. They can hear the group move into view by the window. Claire stands back up, but slowly, hugging the wall. Dust and muck on the window keeps her out of sight along with the thick cotton that dangled over. She lingers for a moment, waiting for a sudden shift of behavior.

"What are you doing?!" Nina hissed and drops her body to the floor, "Claire..!"

"They can't see us." Claire whispered. She pauses and turns to bend down below the door handle, choosing to ignore the irritable shuffle of concrete and cloth from behind.

Her fingers move quick at turning the latch to the next noise matching its volume. "That- won't last." said Nina as she sits up under the window, shaking her head in lethargic motion. Claire inches away, resting hers on the door frame. Tonight was another stroke of luck, this group was provided with bare minimum equipment. Just a bunch of hired surface goons patrolling the outer habitations of the city. Chasing the two women from the center, away from the bustling shuttles back to Lockhart Port.

Away from my PDA, thought Claire With zero contacts but the family. She eyed the latch above her. Wondering if they had a better chance of getting out by getting caught.

And their choices narrow.

Claire's chest heaves, fervor moving the pistol and pointing at the door. Her touch was inept, as seen by Nina's scoff. But she adjusts her posture, and recalls every target practice Nina had paid her to do for "passenger" safety.

"What are you going to do? It's done. You may as well shoot me in the head before he does." Nina spat. They were going to find out - but Claire stands her ground, recalling earlier thoughts. There is always a chance to take. Like many more that was presented to her since Lockhart Port.

Besides, this chase was pushing them to the literal edge. Where else is there to go if they escaped now? The land is foreign and the nights long and absurdly dark. Indigenous life they have no knowledge of, slavery-

"We're coming out!" yelled Nina with her hands thrown in the air.
31 Jan 2018, 4:53pm
Nina jolted to the door and out before Claire could open her mouth. She clasped them with her free palm and stepped in shade.

The man was coaxing Claire in his aloof manner. No one else appeared to be around in the moment Nina bolted. Meanwhile, she remains unmoved, loosening her sharp breath.

All she could do was listen.

She hears him walk to Nina. His shadow collides with hers.

With a brisk guess, Claire steps out and aims at his head.

"Don't." she warns.
10 Feb 2018, 2:58am
Claire stammers, little gasps escape her mouth. And somewhere in her mind was a dismissal of his intent. A mistake quickly swathed at the sight of his barrel contourted into Nina’s skin. Did the grin do that?

She shakes her head, “If you shoot her, whoever hired you won’t pay a thing.”

Remaining still again, she disregards her peripheral scanning of his person. Arms snaked with sharp tattoos, interrupted by the occasional vein or two. Gruffy hair and unkempt beard she wished he would scratch.

Though what stood out the most was his tangerine scarf, Claire’s marker for a sloppy shot.

Her teeth grit, though unbeknownst to Claire, “And don’t call me that.” Her heat rises, shedding the cold atmosphere of the night.

Sam was highly minded to give Jem flight controls at some point during the journey, holding off as they hurtled through with space within the first of their 15 jumps.

"Well anyone trying to steal the cargo will end up with a bit of a shock. The only cargo contained is standard water. Hence the sunny cargo, virtually little value in an occupied system."
16 Feb 2018, 8:19am
"Water?"

Jemine raises an eyebrow and chuckles softly.

"When you said 'funny', I thought you meant it was... oh, never mind. Besides, any pirate who knows their stuff will scan the cargo first. And some pirates will take anything, even if it is only water."

Looking ahead out of the canopy, Jemine watches the swirl of witchspace sweep past. She smiles, eyes wide.

"I'd forgotten how beautiful this is," she says. "It almost makes me want to become a pilot again. Almost."
16 Feb 2018, 8:56am
"Yes, water, but if we were to be interdicted, the scans in their ship would indicate something more valuable, a liquid attempt at fool's gold."

Sam added with a smile as they dropped out of hyperdrive, the familiar sound of a fuel scoop activating as he skimmed the Cobra past the star at a suitable distance.

"Well you're free to give this ship a run anytime Jem, likewise if you want to be in command for a few jumps.'
16 Feb 2018, 12:24pm
Jemine nods.

"I may take you up on that," she says. "If only to see how rusty I've become."

Several jumps later, Jemine coughs and clears her throat.

"All right, Sam. Let me take the helm for a couple of jumps. If you're still willing to risk it, that is, what with all that gold we're carrying. Which I still don't get, by the way. You do know it's illegal to falsify a cargo signal, don't you?"
