Elite roleplay: Off station

OFF STATION

Your ship, deep space, anything that is not happening inside the Citi Gateway or Ingaba...

General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

Vasil grunted. He probably would have done something similar if he were in Vodan’s place, so he could not be upset. That did not stop him from being frustrated, though. Vasil checked the cargo list. Nearly a third of his 600 ton cargo capacity was unprogrammed limpets.

“Okay, let’s play this little game.”

Vasil set the limpet controller to auto-launch and to always keep at least four in continuous operation. He felt certain he had enough to outlast Vodan’s limpets and harassing point defense. He also had enough to do more creative things.

Vasil angled the Long Road so its cargo hatch faced the limpets tussling over the COVAS, and waited for the Bar to get in between the limpets and the Long Road. “Victor, force jettison three limpets.”

Makeshift limpet cannons don’t do anything to a shielded ship, but they are guaranteed to catch someone’s attention if they make contact.

The Long Road slowly closed the distance to the COVAS, the belly of the Type drifting and soon looming closer to the Bar. “Pardon me, I believe that is mine. Yours is over there with the others.”

Kasumi Goto“They may be keeping the power signature low. To avoid detection. And if there are ships, nearby, they will not be waiting somewhere obvious. Your fancy scanners… may detect if there is activity, inside, though.”

“External connection points, could be disabled. But, we will… not find out, without looking closer.”

“I agree with you. Let’s take a closer look,” I said, throttling up just a notch as I steered towards the installation.

Not long after, a broadcast pinged my console, clearly meant for us.

[Static crackle]
...Attention, unidentified vessels. You are approaching the Janus Corp. Medical Research Centre, which is operating under a security lockdown. This facility is within a restricted zone protected under the 3203 Corporate Act.

Aside from the message received, I couldn’t detect any other activity. No ships rushing to intercept us, nor guns swiveling our way. Perhaps the message was automated, some sensor picking up on our presence in the absence of its masters. But that was pure conjecture, based on my read of the unusual response. Normally, such messages were followed by a show of arms, a little flex to prove they could enforce their no-fly zone.

“What do you make of this?” I mused aloud, my scanners drawing a blank on life signs but picking up faint energy signatures.

“No life signs, but some faint energy signatures from the station. We’re still a fair distance out though, and the station could be shielded.” My voice carried a mix of curiosity and caution, the thrill of the unknown tingling at the back of my mind.

Vasil Vasilescu“Pardon me, I believe that is mine. Yours is over there with the others.”

"Hahah. Pushy little cock sucker" laughed Vodan shield checking the bigger ship.

The Asp Ex may handle like a rock, but the Long Road was a bigger rock, much bigger. There was no pushing that thing about.

"Vodan, we got him. Vasil Vasilescu, and he's got oh so much to loose. Plenty to fuck with if we need to" Reported Thade.

Double checking the coms to Long Road were muted, Vodan answered his second in command.

"Got gun to the head opportunities, Thade?"

"Aplenty Vodders. He's got his fingers in so many pies, and he's an Imp nob. Reputation to worry about and all that"

"Ha" Well Basil Vasilescu.."

"It's Vasil, Vodan. Vasil Vasilescu" Thade corrected.

"Well Vasil Vasilescu better not disappoint me right now, or I'll see to it he disa-fuckin-points every toothy twat in his la-de-da family"

So, this guy was an Imp nob too? They seemed to be every fuckin where these days. Vodan was reminded of Creamy yet again, a man Vodan had given his word to about the covas. The Imp twat had gone to Vengerfield's fold willingly, giving Vodan his life back, so the least he could do was pass on the Covas to some one that may care to find out what had become of him. Vodan had kept forgetting about the damn thing for months now any way.

"Alright Thade, I'll stop fucking with him, but I want three people to keep track of that ship. I'll scan his wake, coz if he's double crossed me, I want to know wher.. THATS THE POD!"

Finding a match for the info Vasil sent, Vodan moved the Bar off through a cloud of buzzing limpets to claim his prize.

“I don’t know. Do not remember receiving this message, last I visited. Which was… a while, ago. Maybe, Azimuth put it on, to discourage people less stubborn, than we are. But… I have, an idea.”

One that related to my not-so-human abilities. Namely seeing on the infrared spectrum, which was… like hitting a ‘switch’ in my brain, albeit not physically. Because I could do it with a simple thought.

Most of the structure looked “cold”, but some parts were lit up, presumably the faint energy signatures referred to. They seemed to be on the exterior - but were they gaps in the shielding, or turret emplacements?

“I can… ‘see’, those power signatures, too. But, cannot tell, if turrets, or just gaps, in shielding. We should… approach, carefully. There are, only a few, small spots, where they cannot reach. And I cannot tell, if there is a data link or transmitter to hack, without getting closer.”

At least, any local defense emplacements would be much less powerful than their counterparts on stations or capital ships, though still nothing to be trifled with, if it could be avoided. Part of me somehow suspected the Shining Digger to make a surprise appearance once we’d closed in enough, but I couldn’t particularly ‘sense’ any FSD signatures closing in on the location, though I’d only be able to provide limited advance warning due to reduced awareness while not being in supercruise.

I also hadn’t exactly told the woman on the other ship what I could do. Need to know only, and those details weren’t particularly important here, anyway. So it would come as a bit of a surprise if I made use of it, though it was more a passive sensation that turned itself off if there was too much coming in from it, like in highly populated systems.

The judder from Vodan’s shield check that rippled through the Long Road made Vasil grin. He understood it as Vodan’s acknowledgement he was moving out of the way not because of being intimidated, but because Vasil had the advantage in mass.

A quick boost from one of the limpets wrestling over the COVAS sent the pair careening into the Long Road and bouncing away, both dead from the impact. Another limpet raced in to scoop up the tumbling COVAS and bring it in.

“Dammit!” spat Vasil. All he needed was for the COVAS to be damaged and useless.

The Bar boosting over to the decoy pod with Red Jade’s biosignature reminded Vasil that the COVAS was only a means to an end that could be achieved other ways. It just a shortcut to a bigger prize for which his sister, Octavia, would reap all of the benefits. Pentru Familie și Imperiu was on the Vasilecu coat of arms. For Family and Empire.

His actions had led to the end of an Imperial legacy and, quite possibly, an Imperial family. In his cargo hold the last Red Jade, Marcela Enciso Ruiz y Hidalgo, slept in an escape pod marked with “Unknown Occupant.” There was one more thing he could do to help ensure the unrecognizable remains in the decoy pod were assumed to be her.

Vasil opened the comm channel. “Hey asshole, I am sure the feeling is mutual when I say it has not been a pleasure, and I hope we never do business again, but do me a favor. Tell the girl that handing her over to you was not personal. It was just better business.”

Vasil kicked the thrusters to full and engaged the pre-progamed jump, disappearing in a silent blink of light.

Well, it would’ve probably been the first time in history if a simple message had been enough to stop a pirate from getting closer to her target. Lacking scanner data to prove otherwise, I considered the whole thing a bluff for deterrence.

“I agree with you, I also think it’s a deterrent. Let’s risk it.”

I slowed down a bit but kept heading towards the installation, curious to see if this would provoke a reaction.

A short while later, the sensitive scanner prototype, which I had pilfered from an intelligence service some time ago, registered the presence of several small objects ahead of me. I slowed down further, increased the optical zoom and soon I could see the objects with my own eyes: mines.

And apparently particularly sophisticated ones, at least they were so shielded that they would be barely visible on a normal scanner, and most probably only when it was too late.

“LOOK OUT! Minefield ahead!” I called out to my companion over the comms.

The Anansi limped through the system, having to stop every few hundred lightyears to let the FSD cool off. On bored, in one of the executive landing pads sat the Bar, Vodan’s Asp. In the Bar’s cargo bay, Vodan and Thade stood beside the open pod, looking at the pinkish goo inside.

“So, what is it?” asked Vodan prodding a lump in the oatmeal like goop.

“Don’t dip your finger in it, god sake. I’m analyzing a sample now”

Motor sounds and other complicated noises issued from a device Thade had wheeled in once the frost on the pod's window melted.

“Smells like soup, or nutri-paste” offered Vodan with his finger under his nose. “The cat banger filled a pod with nutri-paste. What a wanker”

The analyzer offered up its findings on a little screen for Thade to read.

“No, not nutri-paste, it was people. Well, a person”

“Ergh” ejected Vodan wiping his finger on Thade’s sleeve. “Who is it?”

Thade took a step back to stay out of Vodan’s reach and aimed a scathing WTF look at his boss. “Well, I don’t know. They’ve had a haircut or something since last time I saw them”

Shaking his head, Thade pinched the bridge of his nose. He still had a headache from the crash, and it had been a tough day all round. “Who fuckin is it, he says. Jesus!”

“Alright, don’t get smart asshole. I mean, if its Jade, maybe we can use the DNA to fool the letter.. “

Thade had to interrupt him. He knew where Vodan was going, and it was pointless. “If, we managed to find one of her thumbs in there, then.. .. We still wouldn’t have a fucking chance. That's a stupid idea. Anyway, it’s not Jade. That pressure accident isn’t even female”

“Eeerrrr” Groned Vodan sitting on the pod. “So the bird buggerer did pull a switch” He closed his eyes and tipped his head back “If they don’t let you look in the box..”

There was a long exhalation and a pause before Vodan continued.

“Ok, so do we know where he is?”

“Yep. Could only send one ship.. Honestly, we only had one ship left that was kitted up to follow someone. Lucky Vasil’s in a T9 really, or we’ed be fucked”

“Cool cool. Good chance he’s really got Jade in his hold, so let me know if he makes a drop, meets up with another ship or whatever. If he lands before any of that, get me a squad ready. Have we got a squad left?”

Thade rocked his hand side to side like a scales.

“Oh, right, yeah. Welp fuck it. I’m going for a pint and maybe some sleep”

Standing up, Vodan floated down the open cargo hatch. Before his boots hit the deck, he called back to Thade.

“Oh and Bell. Let me know when Bell makes contact yeah? See ya”

Haraldsen“LOOK OUT! Minefield ahead!” I called out to my companion over the comms.

I hadn't been going particularly quickly, at least in relative terms - about a hundred meters per second - and, having stayed behind the person with the fancy scanner, wasn't at much risk of any mine bumping before the ship slowed down to a halt again. Wasn't hard to see them, with my enhanced vision, now that I was aware of the minefield's presence.

"I, see them. Avoid, or destroy?"

I wasn't sure which of the two options was better. Unless a ship was as cold as the surrounding vacuum - and my current fit was definitely not set up for that - the sensors of that installation had to have picked us up as contacts already. But at the same time, shooting the mines down would have made our intentions a little too obvious... could only hope they weren't heat-sensitive like the caustic mines surrounding a Titan. That would be a problem for me, at the very least.
28 Jun 2024, 1:51pm
“The safest bet’s probably to blow the mines to smithereens… judging by the message, their scanners have already got a bead on us anway. And unauthorized entry is still unauthorized entry… a few busted mines won’t make it much worse.”

The Clipper was loaded with 62 rockets, well-coordinated, their blast radius should clear a path. I glanced at the rocket launcher’s display, but I was waiting for my companion’s two cents.

“I could also try to find a path through the minefield with my scanner. It might work at a snails pace, though you’ve got it easier with your width of 72 meters compared to my nearly 104 meters. Guess for once I’m not quite as streamlined as you are.” I couldn’t help but flash a silly grin that stretched from ear to ear at that last remark.

“If it’s any consolation - I’ll probably blow up before you do… but then again, one or two of those mines should be something my ship can handle, and the Phantom’s even more solid than my ship unless you’ve kitted it out with the worst shield. Your call.”

I shook my head.

"That... was, a terrible joke. And, my shield, is the biggest the ship can fit. One of those, fast recharging, ones. Made to take less damage from, lasers. And, a few... shield boosters."

I paused, looking at my own weapon display.

"I can, also shoot mines. But, no missiles. Two, burst lasers, modified to pierce armor, and plasma accelerators. So, maybe... we should just shoot them. But, I still think, it might draw more attention, than is necessary."
28 Jun 2024, 2:24pm
“You never did fancy my jokes, but lucky for me, I don’t have to hustle credits with my humor. And yeah, I reckon we’re both on the same page that blasting our way through is the safest bet. And sure, it’s also the option that’ll get us the most eyeballs.”

I could feel my companion hesitating over the decision.

“Would you prefer if we find a way to sneak through? I’m game for that, if you have confidence in your piloting skills, we can give it a go. If there's an explosion, we can still use our weapons. It won't make any difference then...”
28 Jun 2024, 2:33pm
"I... don't, know."

I had never really been the best at that whole decision making thing, even before... then. I couldn't even say it had been that much of a conscious decision for my curves to grow as big as they had, it'd more, just... happened. And I let it go on until I was almost too excessively large for it to be practical in any way, not that I really regretted it. But I had something more important to focus my mind on.

"I, think... you decide. Do, what you think, is best. I would not come to a decision, myself. Easily."
28 Jun 2024, 3:01pm
I weighed the pros and cons once more, then decided to first dare to seek a path through the minefield. I adjusted the scanner to the highest resolution and mapped a course ahead as far as it would go.

Then I followed my navigation points at a very leisurely pace. The whole situation reminded me of my training in the Imperial Navy. Fly slow, avoid collisions, follow the course. However, there was one significant difference: today’s route led through a minefield that would forgive very few mistakes. And I would have to stop occasionally to determine the next section of the path ahead.

All in all, it would be quite a tedious and lengthy affair. And we would be sitting ducks if someone decided to open fire. A minefield around your own installation seemed to be an effective way of forcing the enemy into an unfavorable position, which could then be taken under fire by the station or its patrols. I could imagine that this would be quite effective even if the defenders were outnumbered. A clever move.

“Best follow my route, but keep enough distance in case I need to dodge quickly,” I said over comms. Then I focused on the task at hand.
28 Jun 2024, 3:12pm
"You go. I follow."

That, I felt, was as much as needed to be said. This was more my element, anyway - follow a plan laid out by somebody else, for a general guideline, but the specifics were somewhat open when it came to enacting it 'in the field'. Not that I felt particularly comfortable sneaking through a field of mines that were barely visible to scanners and not that visible to the naked eye, either, unless you had a cybernetic replacement... or weird biotechnology as I did. They seemed to be scattered around in a sphere, too, so it wasn't as if we were dealing with somebody who didn't understand the three-dimensional nature of space.

And it was agonizingly slow, too. Move forward one bit, adjust course, move forward at a snail's pace again. My trigger finger was very much starting to get itchy, but I had to keep it reigned in, for now.

Still had to keep thinking about the Shining Digger. As if we didn't have enough to worry about with the Helix nonsense and then the Dawnbreaker itself.
28 Jun 2024, 3:29pm
Vodan “Cool cool. Good chance he’s really got Jade in his hold, so let me know if he makes a drop, meets up with another ship or whatever. If he lands before any of that, get me a squad ready. Have we got a squad left?”

Vasil followed his pre plotted course of ten jumps, each with varying lengths and directions intended to confuse any undetected ships trailing him. He rarely gave the Long Road a chance to cool down, driving the heat ever higher by immediately initiating the next jump as soon as he entered a system. By the last jump he was out of heat sinks and low on fuel.

“Victor, set orbital distance and speed for max fueling with no more than 65% steady heat.”

The COVAS guided the ship into a steady-state fuel scooping orbit around the system’s lone, angry red star. “Fueling will be complete in 3.2 minutes.”

Vasil called up a nav map to plot his next jumps. He did not expect he’d need full fuel to get to where he was going to offload the cargo. However, the issue was that he had not determined exactly where he was going to do that.

He immediately ruled out taking the recovered escape pods back to the Emerald Dawn. These were not refugees fleeing the Thargoids, and it was best keep both the Emerald Repatriation Society and the Vasilecu family insulated from anything to do with Red Jade. No, best to treat the pods like any other after-battle recoveries and hand them all over to a Search and Rescue agent. Preferably, an agent in a secure, Imperial system.

Vasil focused the navcomp on Achenar. The Imperial capitol was only 80 LY distant, and you can’t get any more Imperial or secure than that. Only four jumps away, two with high yield FSD injections. Vasil checked the raw material levels, programmed the synthesizer for two premium FSD injections and plotted the course.
