Elite roleplay: Off station

OFF STATION

Your ship, deep space, anything that is not happening inside the Citi Gateway or Ingaba...

General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

"I think we'll just do it like last time. It worked after all."

I walked towards the personnel airlock of the Type-6, which was waiting for us, fully serviced and refueled. Enough time had passed since its last use due to our activities that the defective displays on Kasumi's seat could be replaced. The technicians had also made sure that the new displays were at a greater distance from her seat, learning from the previous mishap.

I opened the airlock, looking around briefly for my companion.

"Let's go then. Are you coming?"
31 Aug 2024, 5:40pm
"Yes, yes. Was, just... letting you, go ahead."

While observing a minimum safety distance, not that it was particularly necessary. I was not at any real risk of tripping, especially not in zero G, at this point. Preserving this sense of balance was... also not difficult, given that it had to be innate, with all that weight on my upper half trying to pull me down... in an environment with actual gravity, that was.

Of course, walking at a leisurely pace did not help with convincing my companion that I was keeping up, but I didn't want to feel stressed already, with the task ahead. And was quite confident in how things would go - with us not ending in a wreckage, preferably - yet keeping those adrenaline levels down before we actually set off was good.

I waited for her to go through the airlock first and set to getting my big 'bumper' through, once there was space and no risk of collision. At least, the breast was not so colossally oversized as to be a major obstacle to it, even with it covered by armor. A few seconds, thereabouts, later, I was through.

"Go on, ahead. Will follow, to the cockpit."

Wasn't like much could happen between now and there. The worst incident which could occur before takeoff, was me being silly and making inadequately spaced panels get shot back to their original positions quite forcefully, using my unreasonably sized thighs. But that would probably not repeat itself, amusing as the thought was.

Vasil Vasilescu“Thank you for your time, Doctor.” Vasil tucked his small pad back into a suit pocket and stood. “We’ll be sure keep you informed of any progress.” He suspected she might want to know, even though she had not asked. For all of the Doctor’s assertions that Ninette and Creamy were professional interests, Vasil suspected the extra assistance built into Creamy’s Ninette was driven by more than just AI research.

Vasil made a good point. Lamb and her fleet carrier were involved in that battle to some extent. Perhaps she had more knowledge that could aid their search. She didn't seem to keen on assisting when they last spoke so he'd have to choose his words carefully. Before pocketing his slate, he sent along a message to her.

"Dearest Lambast,

It has come to my attention that you may be able to assist in the ongoing search for (he who shall not be named). To further keep myself out of trouble, I am extending my hand to you once again. If you could please inquire with the crewmen of The Thunderchild about a fleet carrier named The Ophois and send along any info or data you have in your possession, I would be forever in your debt.

Best regards,
Maul Montresor

P.S. I KNOW I'M ALREADY FOREVER IN YOUR DEBT BTW DONT RUB IT IN
"

Standing up from the cushy chair, Maul began to put his backpack on again. "Thanks again Doctor. I've been a big fan of yours for a while. Based my A.I. AVA on some of your earlier works."

"If you ever need anything done that doesn't exactly align with the powers at be, well, you've got my resume." He said, referring to his criminal record flashing on her screen.
31 Aug 2024, 9:39pm
That wasn't Maul, a message like that had to be a code. Reading it again, Lamb decided to call. After a few rings Maul answered. He seemed to be somewhere busy judging by the background noise. Well, that was better than quiet, or not answering at all. Still, Dearest Lambast? Oh dear no, that wasn't the Maul she knew at all.

"Maul, what the bloody hell is going on? That message was coherent and respectful. There for I am concerned about you. Should I send some people? Are you alright?"
31 Aug 2024, 10:12pm
Maul hurriedly stepped to the side away from Vasil and Willow to speak with Lambast. This was not the reaction he expected from her at all but at the very least, he had discovered how to get urgent assistance if needed.

"What? No everything is fine. I just know you don't like this Creamy dude but thought if I asked nicely that you'd help. Guess that was a mistake, huh? No, I just need some deets on that fleet carrier is all. It was present during that shit show from before. Figured the Thunderchild crew may have skimmed some info during the battle."
31 Aug 2024, 10:33pm
"Oh good heavens Maul" She sounded angry. .. but that was normal. Really, Lambast was relieved. "I'm not a sulking child, Montresor. If you must spend your time looking for the Goodness fool, so be it"

Lamb was busy testing one of the new wings of Titan bombers. Rather, Kai and Fresh were testing the Python MkII bombers. Lambast was in a support Phantom collecting data, so she had time to forward the call to the Thunderchild.

"I believe we shared a great deal of information with the Ophois, did we not control? They had a piratically clever way of precharging the FSD with out having a target system. Shaves about a third off the normal jump charge"

"I have the file on the Ophois here madam" said a male voice.

"Good show that man, send it along to Mister Montresor please, and thank you"

Lamb watched the distant trails of the new ships. They were a pitiful bearer of the name Python, but for darting in, dropping a payload and getting out for rearm, they were surprisingly good.

"There you go mister Montresor, now be careful alright? And next time you message me, do so with your customary style, or lack there of, if you please. Thank you"
31 Aug 2024, 10:57pm
Maul was already vaguely parsing through the file on his slate by the time Lambast had spoke again. "Yeah for sure. customary. Thanks a ton Lamb. I'll holler at you again once this all this is over. Be safe."

He ended the call and approached Willow and Vasil again, sending them the same file he'd received from Lambast. "I reckon this should help. She said something about them precharging their FSD without a target system. Said it shaved a third off the usual range. Only glimpsed it myself but I'm sure there's more there."
31 Aug 2024, 11:15pm
Vasil gave Maul his space. If he was communicating with Lambast, as Vasil suspected, it would be best for him to not make his presence known. He’d already screwed up the rapport he had with the woman and did not want that to affect any assistance she might offer to someone she considered a friend.

It was late afternoon by the time they had finished speaking with Dr. Etienne and returned to the hopper. Vasil remote started the vehicle to cool the interior. A few curious people craned their heads around while looking for the source of the sparrowhawk’s spooling turbine as the auto-valet brought the vehicle to the hopper pad.

Emerging from the garage onto the pad, the hopper glimmered in the sunlight, with hints of metallic orange fire dancing in the deep, candy apple red paint. Naming the color Red Shift hinted at both speed and the properties of the paint finish. Not bad marketing, thought Vasil, even if it was less than subtle.

Once everyone was settled in, Vasil eased the hopper up and into the flow of traffic leaving the University. “So, it looks like the plan is to find the Ophois, somehow get the malware Oceane onto it, and start combing its logs for info. It’s been a year since Goodness was transferred to the carrier, so that is going to be a huge amount of data to go through. With luck maybe we can find out his ultimate fate, whether he is still on the Ophois or if they put him in a pod and shot him into a star.”

“Since you are having your ship transferred here, Willow, I can take the Shag Shack back to Citi if you like and then join you in Summerland.”
01 Sep 2024, 12:03am
"Shag shack?" Asked Willow looking up from the Ophois report. "Like, have a bit of respect dude, its going to be a mobile funeral home, you know?"

It was hard to stop looking at the Ophois FSD data, this was way better than just a wake scan. What ever they did in that fight Vee talked about, they sure swapped a lot of data abut jump calculations.

"Er, the HP can stay in Sol. Like, it needs some refitting anyway. But, if you want to take it back to Inara to pick up your ship, that'd be cool. It's real smooth to fly, you know? Once you get used to the real sensitive stick that is. So, I have to pick Gutamaya for over all style, but man can Saud Kruger deliver when it come to spaceflight engineering"

"With a good pilot, the only way you'll know it moving, is by like, look out the window, you know?"
01 Sep 2024, 1:26am
The sparrowhawk weaved as easily as its namesake through light traffic at the city’s 200 meter mid-level air corridors, soaring over the congested ground traffic plodding along streets thrown into shadow by the huge glass and steel buildings.

“Willow," he said like he was admonishing a toddler caught climbing a chair to grab cookies from a cookie jar. "Are to really going to trust a fed shipyard to do retrofits on that ship?” Vasil shook his head. “Nah. I’ll get you a berthing at the Saud Krueger yards on Mackenzie Relay in Cemiess. You’ll have a SK Port Engineer to run the project and keep everything on schedule, not some lowest bidder contractor looking to turn a quick profit with crap work.”

A small chime sounded, indicating that the hopper had been given an approach vector into the Starport. Vasil pulled up above the buildings of Olympus Village and banked the hopper toward the Starport. “Oh, I’ve spoken with Finance and Accounting. You are both going to be assigned a Tier 1 ERS expense account. Use it to get any gear or equipment you need for this little search of ours. They have a set limit of ten mil, so try not to spend it all at one time.”
01 Sep 2024, 4:46pm
"Oh neat. Thanks Vee. 10 Kay is a lot of unmeatabels. And um, yeah but tell Saud Kruger I'm overseeing the refit. A funeral home isn't a cruise yacht, you know?"

"Ok, we got enough data here for me to find the Ophois. Like, once we got our ships together, We'll head to Summerland and pick up the trail, no problem"

Kasumi Goto"Go on, ahead.

I stepped into the narrow corridor, ensuring my companion was right behind me. The dimly lit corridor seemed to stretch endlessly, every step echoing in the confined space. Finally, the corridor opened up into the cockpit, a compact but functional space filled with control panels and displays. I slid into the pilot’s seat, the familiar feel of the controls beneath my fingers offering a fleeting sense of comfort, while I glanced back, waiting for my companion to take her seat at the ship’s monitoring console which was an unexpected sight in a ship type like this.

But the Gullveig had been specially modified for covert surveillance missions, though from the outside it still appeared to be an ordinary freighter. The necessary equipment and the second seat had been installed at the expense of the ship’s cargo capacity, but for camouflage purposes, it could still carry a few tons of freight. There was a good chance that this ship would allow us to blend in with the other ships and keep an eye on our surroundings at the same time.
02 Sep 2024, 12:05pm
Cockpit of the Lakon box still looked the same, of course. The most eye-catching thing about it was the weirdly-sized seat designed to contain a certain-size lower half to someone's body, which I of course wandered over to, and snuggled into, getting quite comfortable. Unlike before, when I 'tested' the panels, they also did not clash with said oversized lower half now, because it lifted me up well past what was usual for someone with my... otherwise... thin body type.

"Aw. Will not, get to use- my thighs, as springs.", I remarked in a theatrically dismayed tone, hinting that I was not actually too disappointed in it. Definitely beat having them get 'compressed' for most of the flight.

It was still a bit snug for my wide parts down there, but I had been warned about it. And I would have lied if I didn't have a certain weird enjoyment of still barely fitting into something purpose-designed only for my unique... form. Or that I would sprawl out into said limited space further, when the inevitable act of the soft mass shifting to accommodate for acceleration forces, occurred.

I really did have such a weird mind.
02 Sep 2024, 4:24pm
I turned my head and looked over my shoulder at my companion and grinned.

“Bet that doesn't automatically mean that nothing will break this time...”

After a quick status check, I declared us ready for flight and initiated the transfer from the hangar to the surface of the carrier.

“Underway in few... Just a moment more.”

Soon, our ship departed the home carrier, accelerating as I set course for the system where Thor Biometrics was located.

“System jump in 3... 2... 1...”
02 Sep 2024, 4:46pm
"It, will... be fine. Probably."

Those were my assumptions and last words before our jump, anyway. Of course, that in itself was quite uneventful, as was to be expected of a simple hyperspace journey far away from anything Thargoid.

"Just, point me, where you need.", I said, as soon as the main star came into view. Luckily this was not one of the bright ones, so no risk of retina burning here.
