Elite roleplay: Off station

OFF STATION

Your ship, deep space, anything that is not happening inside the Citi Gateway or Ingaba...

General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

“Look, I don’t know what kind of pirate fantasies you’ve got, but usually, we don’t crawl through tunnels to snag cargo. That sounds more like spy work. Or maybe the techies’ gig.”

I popped open the maintenance hatch - it gave way without a fuss - scanned for any nasty surprises, and then squeezed into the narrow entryway. At first, it was a straightforward straight shot, but soon enough, I hit a crossroads.

I pulled up the ship schematic, the little digital favor from Kasumi, pointing me toward the computer room. Apparently, I needed to take a left first, then veer right up ahead before heading downward.

Double-checking for surprises - better safe than dead - I wriggled forward on my belly through the maintenance tunnel. Opening the next panel proved trickier in this awkward position.

“Dammit. Do they only hire dwarves for this or what?"
02 Jul 2024, 2:28pm
My joke about indignant tasks had apparently gone right over the woman's head, so I didn't insist further on it and just watched as she disappeared in the narrow tunnel.

'Glad I don't have to be in there.'

I also heard her complaint about the narrow nature of it. But chose to not say anything about it and just be amused, in my cozy little cockpit spot. At least standing was not really tiring because of the lack of anything pulling me toward it. Not noticeably enough to exert gravity, at least.

I did keep an eye out for the ship's owner making an impromptu return, though. Because that was the one obstacle here which couldn't be easily planned for. Otherwise, I remained ready to bypass any security measures, as necessary.

The shaft before me plunged straight down at a 90-degree angle, handholds lining its sides. To reach the computer, I’d have to descend headfirst. Lucky for me, the lack of gravity made it less challenging than it would’ve been otherwise. And it wasn’t exactly a bottomless pit.

So I slid in headfirst, twisted and bent like a damn acrobat. At the shaft’s end, I found myself staring horizontally at a different kind of barrier. It sealed the opening airtight, resembling something between a vault door and a high-security hatch. The markings on it screamed “Authorized Personnel Only.” Well, I felt plenty authorized, but I had my doubts whether that’d cut it.

“Here I am, standing - or floating, or hanging - whatever you want to call it... right in front of this cover, and according to your fancy ship map, the computer’s behind it. Seems like we need some tech credentials to crack this baby open. There’s a little scanner-like thing in front of me, about the size of a palm. My guess is we need to slap some kind of access card on it. Any bright ideas on how to get past this?"
02 Jul 2024, 3:50pm
"Er ..." I scratched my head, having momentarily taken off the helmet... to deal with an itch. "One moment. Will look around."

I figured I wouldn't find it around the cockpit, seemed too obvious, but poked around it anyway. To no one's surprise - or, at least, not mine - I didn't find anything that screamed access card in various stowage compartments. Not that there were many here.

So, instead, I wandered over to the personal cabin located within the ship. Given that it was Imperial in design, bigger than I expected for a ship of small size... and, quite surprisingly, with no fancy locks.

'Hm. Guess whoever owns this ship didn't expect anyone to just waltz into this particular spot.'

Not that I would argue about it. I rummaged through a few spots - ignoring wardrobe drawers, because I was not that kind of weird - and maybe got lucky. It certainly looked like an access card... and copying its 'profile' was not particularly difficult. Just hoped it would work. I uploaded that copied profile to my key.

"There... okay. I have uploaded, the profile of an access card, to the key. Try if it works. If, not... you may just get, an... 'Access denied', message. Hopefully."

I put my helmet back on after that. In case everything went horribly sideways because of that one test, but this did appear to be the right access card.

Of course, I sincerely hoped that the whole operation would be a complete success, but at the moment I was just relieved that the data had been transferred to my key and I didn't have to retrace my steps.

I flicked open the little pouch on my left arm, pulled out the magic key, and with a bit of a fumble on the second try, placed it on the designated spot. How it worked was beyond me, but it seemed the mere presence of something in front of the sensor was enough to establish contact with the key and read the data. Maybe the key could respond to a variety of queries, as long as it had something to say. I made a mental note to dig into that mystery when I had a chance.

For now, though, I stashed the key back safely into the pouch as the cover slid open inward. Before me was a brightly lit, small round room, with the computer at its heart. I could touch the control console in front of me with an outstretched arm, which would slide the computer, encased in its protective housing, out of its secure berth, revealing its maintenance port.

I briefed Kasumi on the situation and laid out my next move - I was about to extend the computer, expose the port, and then plug in the key.

“Any last words?” I quipped.
02 Jul 2024, 4:40pm
"I am only glad, we did not have to deal with, bringing that card over, manually. But, if the ship, starts to explode... I will not wait around. Returning to the cockpit, for now."

Mostly, because I had one of my fancy guns over there. And I both wanted that for defense as well as having it with me in case I needed to ditch the ship quickly - in this spot, probably by hitting the emergency release bolts of the canopy.

I'd really have to try putting in the effort to learn how to run properly with this shape. Maybe once I had fully recovered... though I still wasn't sure if that was even possible, with how absurdly oversized my thighs were.
02 Jul 2024, 4:55pm
I fired up the control console before me, and the computer, a rod-like figure ensconced in a protective casing, rose vertically from its secure cradle. And just like that, its maintenance port was laid bare before me.

I fished out the magic key from the pouch on my arm once again and slotted it into the maintenance port. A deft twist, 45 degrees to the left, and the deed was done.

Instantly, the room’s lighting shifted to a sinister dark red. A deep, ominous warning signal echoed through the ship, followed by an announcement in a mechanical voice that deep it sent shivers down my spine: ‘Root access established. Warning: security measures are now ineffective.’

“The magic key’s in place. You should be able to link up with the computer now,” I said, my voice dripping with a mix of mischief and triumph.
02 Jul 2024, 5:19pm
"Ok. Here, goes."

I simply set off a download for relevant files - navigation data, comms logs, ID data, recent ship activities... all that stuff. Wouldn't take long to get it all, but I simply planned to run the download through and then ditch this ship before its owner showed up. We'd run into enough trouble in the facility itself as it was... I guessed, at least.

"And remember, to bring the key back. I will unlock the door, for you. So you do not have to go vent crawling, again."

Now it was just a waiting game. The part about things I often hated the most.
02 Jul 2024, 5:48pm
The thought of not having to crawl all the way back was a real kick in the thrusters for my spirits. I hadn’t expected to make it back so easily.

“Of course, I’ll bring the magic key back, I haven’t forgotten your instructions. Give me a shout when the data transfer’s done. I’ve got no clue what happens if I yank the magic key now - maybe it’ll cut all connections or reboot the computer.”

I settled in more comfortably, waiting for my counterpart to give the green light to wrap up the operation.

“Maybe take a gander at the downloaded data while you’re at it. I doubt it, but we might just find access codes to the station. Or at least a clue to who owns this ship. Why make life harder than it needs to be?”
02 Jul 2024, 6:05pm
"Sure. But, I thought, we could just... look at it, together. Once you are, back here. Two minds, better than, one... and, all, that."

Or maybe I was still just being a bit lazy and didn't feel like combing through the data myself. So I decided to just wait around for my adventure companion, informing her once the download was complete - so far, nothing on the ship itself had raised an alert, partly thanks to suppression efforts. I couldn't exclude the possibility of a 'hidden' or backup system, though, so I remained wary nonetheless.
02 Jul 2024, 6:40pm
“Alright, as you wish,” I replied, the corner of my mouth twitching up in amusement.

Sometimes, I got the nagging feeling that my counterpart was all too happy to dump the grunt work of sifting through our newfound intel on me. Sure, she might be a good hacker - scratch that, probably an excellent one - but there were times when she seemed just a tad lazy, especially when it came to data analysis. Maybe it was just her general state of being. I would’ve loved to see her in action back in her heyday, at the top of her game.

I waited patiently, every muscle coiled like a spring, for my companion to signal that the data download was complete.
02 Jul 2024, 7:58pm
My wrist computer pinged when the download was complete, and I informed my helper - in the sense of assisting me, since we were mostly equals, except when it came to body shape - of it, then. Not much point in delaying. Maybe our relation would develop into something more, but I hadn't really put any imagination, or had any ideas, in that regard.

For now, we simply worked toward a common goal, irrespective of... certain ideological differences. Quite well, at that, but still from rather different points of view.

I was fully aware of my being a bit lazy in the data analysis department, but found the act of obtaining it to be far more exciting than looking at what it was that I had recovered, unless it was a particular object of curiosity. Maybe that would go away when my brain regained more of its abilities, or maybe it wouldn't. Hard to tell, from my current position.

I did take a quick look out of boredom, which provided me with the rather interesting fact of the most recent entries in the ship's log... really not being that recent. Whole thing even looked a bit... empty.
02 Jul 2024, 8:48pm
I yanked the magic key from the computer’s maintenance port and tucked it back into my arm pouch. As I did, the light in the computer chamber snapped back to white, while wisps of vapor curled up around the machine, quickly vacuumed away - probably the cool kiss of coolant as the computer rebooted.

I hit the control console one last time, sending the computer sinking back into its shell, then set about leaving the room. The ship’s lights blinked out for a moment before all systems whirred back to life and the lights blazed on again. The reboot was already complete.

I left the room through the door and headed towards Kasumi. Once there, I handed her the magic key.

“This little gizmo’s a real gem. You’ll have to give me the lowdown on how it works and what other tricks it can pull, but for now, let’s focus on the prize. I’m itching to see if our effort paid off.”
02 Jul 2024, 9:12pm
"Maybe, I will. Or, maybe, not. And leave the secret, mine."

I was teasing, of course.

"Anyway... just, look here." With a swipe of the hand, I lit up our recovered data on a holo-display. What little there was of it. "It does not look, new. As if, the ship, has been here, a while."

I wasn't too worried about the owner coming calling, now, in light of that.
02 Jul 2024, 10:07pm
In fact, it hadn't just been a while, but quite a while. The last nav entry was ancient history by now. Looked like the ship had come straight from Achenar, judging by the nav history. But the data haul was slim, too slim - I’d expected a richer history. Either this was indeed her maiden voyage, or someone had wiped the rest clean. Not just anyone could pull that off so neatly.

I flicked from the nav data to the log entries.

“Let’s see if the logs have more to tell. No diary… but here, in the messages, we’ve got something. One received and one sent message. The received one’s slightly older than the sent, both from the year 3307... Well, looks like we can bet the pilot won’t be coming back anytime soon. Let’s take a gander at the older message in the inbox first.”

I popped open the message on the holo-display.

Date: November 19, 3307
From: [REDACTED], Azimuth Biotech
To: XTU63061
Subject: Azimuth Biotech Transport Hijack

It has come to my attention that the Azimuth Biotech transport vessel designated 'Pride Of Taurus' has been hijacked by Darkwater forces. This hijacking was facilitated by the compromise of Azimuth's encrypted communication, which until now had been considered impenetrable.

The full extent of the breach was unknown until the loss of the ship and its Helix cargo, whereupon a thorough investigation led to startling revelations. It appears that Darkwater had detailed knowledge of the transport's intended route to the Azimuth facility in [N}~zj], information that was thought to be secure. And indeed it was until the breach happened - only Azimuth Biotech manages to place a plant like this in such a public place that nobody notices it. Yet it is actually obvious as soon as you know.

Rumors are circulating that the capacities there are to be further expanded so that the data from all research facilities can be backed up there in future, as a safety precaution in the event that one of the facilities fails. I firmly believe that the Club is supporting this, because if you do your research, you realize that all the companies involved in the expansion are subsidiaries of Wreaken Construction.

Because of the still ongoing investigation, there is a risk that my identity may also be exposed. I will therefore be going underground, so this will be my last message to you. May this message serve as a reminder of the ever-present threat posed by Darkwater and similar organizations. Eternal vigilance is imperative.

Long live the Empire.
