Elite roleplay: Off station

OFF STATION

Your ship, deep space, anything that is not happening inside the Citi Gateway or Ingaba...

General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

I was content just waiting out the jump before I answered.

“Thanks, for bringing, me, back. Will, leave, in… a, minute. So, tomorrow, we… go, to, the nebula?”

There was no strict necessity to stay in the carrier’s hangar until the response, but it felt right to leave the ‘business’ behind at the moment of splitting apart to do our own things for the rest of the day. Or, rather, to conclude it before moving on. So I waited a little more - those few seconds wouldn’t be the end of the world… probably.
09 Aug 2024, 7:12pm
I leaned back, tapping the comms button with a smirk.

“You're welcome. Given we have no clue what’s lurking in that nebula, it might be smart to pack some more versatile gear. Or we jump with two carriers - something to mull over. Have a good day, see you tomorrow.”

I ended the transmission, stretching my legs and cracking my knuckles. The thought of the unknown that awaited us in this nebula sent my adrenaline pumping. Flexibility would be the key out there.

So that was that, then. For today, anyway. I departed the carrier and returned to my own, ordering the equipment I'd gotten transferred over to it back there, since it'd serve nobody anything on someone else's capital ship. And I did need at least that standard, albeit pre-engineered, FSD, to cover the distance to my next destination, which was outside the Bubble, and to where I would not be taking my carrier.

By now, I'd gotten a return from Jana too, telling me she'd be there - on the carrier - within the hour. So I had a little bit of time to pass. Prepare for that, maybe. Or... just take a nap. Or be a lazy float in zero G, that seemed nice as well, and would serve as a bit of relaxation. In any case, having that spare time was welcome, because I'd be facing another part of my past once it was over. And none of it had been particularly pleasant, if as important as my friends were to me.

I settled on being a lazy, curvy floating thing, because if I went for a nap I'd probably just be more tired after it. Or I'd doze off while floating, that was an equally likely outcome. Nothing that seemed undesirable to me, though. I went over to my personal cabin and took off the combat suit, then the boots, and just left it all where it came off, letting myself drift around aimlessly.

------------------

Right after arriving at my carrier, the first thing which I did was to check what my Corvette's current weapon setup was... turned out to be that strange loadout with all beam lasers, and a bi-weave shield generator. That wouldn't do so much, here, at least the former. Plasma accelerators in the huge hardpoints... not as good when I got caught up in a dogfight, and I probably would be. Multicannons... possibly a better alternative. The options were two huge beam lasers and cannons in the remaining hardpoints, or inverted, except the alternative loadout had only one beam laser and four focused burst lasers. I ended up settling on the latter, because I was simply aiming for destruction, and twin class 4 multicannons modified to deal additional damage were not rivalled by much in that regard.

Shield wasn't as necessary to be changed out, but this would be a singular fight rather than a series of engagements stretched out over a longer period, so I ordered for the prismatic shield to be put into the compartment instead, with appropriate shield booster setup for it. Then, since I had nothing better to be doing, I set out to prepare the other weaponry I would be needing... hopefully only following our arrival at the Azimuth facility, but I couldn't count out a need to board the transport ship.

Railgun - one mag loaded, six in reserve... if I needed more than the 84 shots that provided me with, things would have gone horribly wrong, somewhere along the line. Assault rifle - seven mags plus the loaded one, giving me a total of 240 rounds for it, and still have the space to fit a combat knife on the belt, plus a few spare pistol mags, which were quite a bit smaller in size, and a grenade or two. Also couldn't forget energy cells... plus maybe a shield projector for a particularly intense firefight.

If there ever was one benefit to having excessively large hips in a combat situation... it was this, being able to fit even more ammo into all that extra space, much more than I could have if I were normally sized. I put it all, and my armor, into a bag, then changed into a Dominator suit - one of my two - also remembering to keep the holo-disguise apparatus attached to the utility belt. Would carry this stuff over to the Corvette first, and put the weapons into a convenient wall holder on its bridge, with a compartment for the bag underneath.

If I didn't end up needing it during this first phase, then at least it was prepared to wander over into the Anaconda with me. The pistol, though, it would be attached to a magnetic point on the side of my seat... weapons were, after all, my best means of self-defense now, when I was this curvy, and it never hurt to have that little thing within arm's reach.

At least some weight off my shoulders. Two, to be correct. First, I got to know what's this urgency all about and, even if grim, knowing was better than floating in an informational vacuum. This is the exact type of vacuum I dislike the most. And the second: even if I still had to act quickly, I knew the timelines. Trying not to think much because it was simply pointless at the moment, I made my way back to the hangar with Marshmallow, one earbud with music in my ear and another ear free to stay aware of the environment, as I usually do when walking alone. Of course there were people staring at me but pfff. As if I had nothing else to care about.

Wasting no time, I started the engines and requested the takeoff, with my eyes locked on the nav panel, searching for the carrier. "Kasumi's Abode". Self-explanatory. And, if texting while driving ground vehicles sucked a lot, because you could easily hit another idiot who liked to text while walking, there's not so many things to run into in space, once you clear the station surroundings.

My first message was sent to the CO of my group, Mr.Pankhurst, and Mr.Douglas who was in charge of the whole Titan-bashing drama, at least from our side, not from the Thargoids'. Hostage rescue operation, Azimuth, blah-blah-blah, will return with photo and video materials from the site. Not that I really needed the proof that I really went to punch Azimuth in the face again, not left the post to lose myself at some two days long rave party, yet the trust I gained by telling the truth has also to be maintained. And who knows, maybe our researchers could notice something I've no idea about.

And another one to Mion who also had her hands full at the settlement, and I hoped that she could keep holding the proverbial line, stopping the overly eager locals from attempting to retake the old '91 right now, so that I could join the party with several AXDF wings later when we're done with the Titans. Told her that I may be unavailable for replies for the next couple of days because of some insane Azimuth shit which I'm going to describe in detail when it's over, since there's no such thing as too much dunking on Azimuth. Plus some random joke and meme exchange, and all that signed "The Chonky Kitten".

Of course I overshot the carrier. Thankfully, only a few dozen light seconds.

Docking requests were authorised already, so once Marshmallow was solidly locked to the landing pad, I also messaged Kasumi, "I'm on the carrier", and, setting the engines on warmed-up standby, got out of my pilot seat to do stuff.

Namely, packing my gear. Thirteen rifle mags, those eighty-rounder keglets-o'-fun, some grenades for a good measure, energy batteries for shields and, well, myself, spare can of coolant liquid for more shooting, and that special surprise for Azimuth that I haven't yet tested on anyone, but secretly hoped they approve it. Not that I'd be asking them politely anyway. The surprise itself looked like an almost foot long survival knife with wire cutter, serrated back edge and a pointy tip, blade made of hardened high-quality forged steel that, given the thrust was strong enough, could punch through light and medium armour without losing the sharpness, breaking or bending. And, I could provide that 'strong enough' quite easily. Yet what was curious about that particular knife is the handle: it looked slightly slanted forward and had a set of oddly looking lugs at the front and back. Azimuth nutjobs were about to taste some very old-school, I'd say even traditional, element of warfare.

And if there are any gods out there, they should really bless the person who invented that funny machine, where you attach the magazine from the side, pour the ammo straight out of the box into a big tube, and crank the handle until ready. Otherwise, I'd be really late at anything.

Then the armour suit, simplified, upscaled and thickened version of the Dominator model, with some of that old-school look to it, rifle goes on the back, still with a sling thrown over my shoulder because it's not your Pioneer toy you could get blasted out of your hands and then pick up another one, magazines go... literally all over the body, on the main belt, on the little belts on the thighs and upper arms, and one into the rifle, knife goes into the sheath on the calf, other stuff also goes on the belt, and, well, I guess that's all. After a few stretches, little jumps and other basic movements made to make sure everything is okay with my gear, I returned the rifle into the locking clamps on the side of my seat, got back at the ship controls and dropped a quick message to Kasumi.

"I'm all set here. How long until the jump?"
12 Aug 2024, 4:29am
A few more minutes. Entering lockdown right about now. Currently walking over to my ship.

I chose to respond via text because I was just in the middle of a corridor full of crew members, and just because I felt more like it. Refitting work bar the interdictor and weapons was done, so I expected to be ready to go within five or ten minutes of jumping. And the hangar was not far, now, so I’d be in there before the jump initiated too. Reached the bridge as I both heard and felt the vibrations of the large capital-class drive powering up, a sound and experience that was always… exciting, was the best way I could describe it in my mind, feeling a satisfying tension rising in the chest with the increasingly loud hum of the drive.

The transition through Witch Space - probably just an incorrect moniker given to the alternate reality by humans - was usually relatively uneventful, aside from making me feel closer to the ‘voices’ I heard through the implant connecting me to the Thargoids, but this time… it was different. As if something was trying to deliberately get my attention, yet the carrier exited the hyperspace tunnel before I could properly determine if what I perceived, or interpreted out of the noise, was right.

With the jump sequence complete, the dock workers could resume changing the weapon mounts, and fit the interdictor. I decided to open up comms - encrypted, of course - between my ship and the FDL.

“Just getting a few finishing touches put in. An interdictor so we can rip that transport out, and some big multicannons. Should tear apart the escorts nicely once I bring their shields down. So, should we, wait near the main star after dropping in, or a little further away?”

Whichever was the better option, between the supercruise overcharge drive fitted to this ship and the increased targeting angle for the interdictor, I was almost guaranteed to catch that transport before it would even have a chance to engage its FSD again. And I had the maneuverability advantage too, making it even less likely to escape once the interdiction tether was established.

“We probably are going to be waiting a little while before our ‘friends’ show up.”
12 Aug 2024, 4:51am
"Hm," I replied on the freshly-opened secure channel. "I guess we should sit close to the star, but separately. On the opposite sides. To cover as much space as possible. I don't have the interdictor yet if I spot them first, I can at least get them nervous and force into pulling evasives, as they don't know I have nothing to drag them out of the cruise. And you could go around the star and do the thing."

Sitting in the cockpit and waiting, I finally realised that the last time I had any drink was back in the camp, a little can of tea, while also waiting for other people to gather. I opened the box under the console, placed there especially to keep some small stuff accessible from the pilot seat, and pulled another tea can out of it. Decided to go with self-cooling for that nice refreshing taste. And, of course, immediately slammed it against the helmet glass first, since my new helmet had a manually-operated old-style armoured glass much like that old riot police gear, instead of hair thin self-sealing plastic stuff. I liked my new thing and found it more convenient, but wasn't quite used to it yet.
12 Aug 2024, 2:09pm
"I guess, that is a way to handle it ..."

I also didn't see how there was a much better way of getting it done than that. We'd probably see the ship drop in near the star the moment it left hyperspace, anyway.

"So... I, guess, we're just waiting now. Refitting's almost done, will take off as soon as the crew's cleared the hangar."

There wasn't a lot else to say. I only realized that I'd started off a sentence in basically the same way twice after finishing the second, but what was said was said. And I had the excuse of my brain still being somewhat wonky after two near-death experiences within two years... which, to say the least, was more than enough of that. At least there were positives to it, too, namely my ridiculous, and great, curvature.
12 Aug 2024, 9:54pm
"Then... Ready when you are," I responded and got out of the seat to drop the already empty tea can into the recycler.

Can't say I was particularly happy having to engage human ships. Not because there were humans in them, no, in fact, Azimuth operatives didn't qualify as humans for me. Mostly because I had to do so in the AX configuration. But... Engines hummed on standby, I was on the landing pad of a carrier heck knows where, and the take-off signal could've sounded any minute now.

In those thoughts, I returned to the controls and got back to waiting.

"...those Azimuth freaks are just plain stupid. How many people and assets do they have to lose to finally understand they aren't getting you?"
12 Aug 2024, 10:05pm
“If I, knew… hopefully, they get it after today. Or, whenever we get to their stupid facility. But, they are idiots, and… don’t seem to learn. So I’m not sure. Would really like to not have to think about some morons with more money than morals trying to use my friends for their… ugh.”

I left out the end of that sentence, making it one where a choice expletive could be inserted into that spot.

“Just give it another minute. Telling you when I’m off.”
12 Aug 2024, 10:33pm
"Perhaps, the morons they pick up as new recruits, originate from some really dull places where you don't receive any news, and working for Azimuth seems like a life changer compared to shovelling manure or digging rocks from morning 'til death."

A short pause creeped into my speech as I addressed my memories to extract more facts I knew.

"...I saw them converting captives into guards to, you know, guard captives. Still no idea how many layers of expendable idiots they have put between the world that obviously isn't happy with the crap they do, and their core."

"Fucktards," I concluded and got back to waiting and staring blankly at the hangar wall in front of me.
12 Aug 2024, 11:02pm
"Just... keep the anger, for them."

I sounded tired, because... I just was. Of this, Azimuth, the world trying its best to make my life as miserable as was even possible. Was it so much to ask to have friends, and not see them get abused as some tool to try forcing an undesirable outcome onto me?

The rest of the wait was spent in silence, due to me just not being in the mood to talk much more right now, as much as I wanted to bitch about Azimuth. So, when the module swaps were complete and the workers out of the hangar, I sent a simple audio ping through the channel to indicate that I was taking off. Two jumps to the intercept point... I'd run another check on the interdictor just to be sure, once there - we would very likely only get one shot at it, and we had to get it right. Could only hope whatever escorts that transport had would also prioritize me as the target, since my ship would be able to take that punishment easily, if I correctly assumed three escort ships.
13 Aug 2024, 6:41am
"Simply stating the fact, phah," I chuckled in response and got back to waiting once again, and it wasn't that long.

Soon, an audio ping sounded on our comm channel and I saw distance readings to Kasumi's ship changing on my HUD, and it could've meant only one thing: we're heading off. My landing pad started moving too, once I sent an automated take-off request, and within a minute, I was on the deck, seeing the Corvette already taking off.

"Ready or not, here we come...", muttering quietly, I took off and locked my navs on the same system Kasumi headed to. Had to give her Corvette some distance since having that hulking mass of steel next to me seriously hampered my own jump charging times. Soon after the Corvette disappeared in a flash, leaving the residual engine trails dissipating in the void, my own hyperspace tunnel opened for me.
13 Aug 2024, 1:42pm
The warm light of an orange, K-type star greeted me upon arrival to our - in every respect, unremarkable - ambush point... because it was literally just the star. And some asteroids circling it. I chose to just hold position there, facing outward from the star. With a little luck, the heat from it would conceal my ship long enough to spring the trap. Then I spent about a minute thinking of an inconspicuous way to call out my arrival.

"I'm in place. Waiting near the rendezvous point."

'And now to see, where this thing comes from ...', I thought to myself, while keeping an eye on the radar for any ship or hyperspace signatures, inevitably left by a ship jumping in. At least, any that weren't from the 'Marshmallow'... such a strange name for a ship. I would definitely have to ask about that one, some time.
13 Aug 2024, 3:12pm
Kasumi's transmission reached me almost immediately after I dropped into the same system and saw her Corvette's marker on my HUD. I accelerated and flew in a half-circle around the star, keeping my eye on the marker to reach the opposite side, where I slowed down to the minimal orbital speed.

"In place, waiting."

The system was terribly empty, just as we needed: only the main star and a thin belt of asteroids circling it, but I still set my contact panel filter to ships only just in case. The hunt had begun...

Five minutes. No signals. Double-checked everything and corrected my positioning relative to Kasumi. She's been going at minimal orbital speed too so I was able to calculate her direction and set Marshmallow to circle the star in the same way, but opposite side, making sure we won't drift apart.

Ten minutes. No signals. Allowed myself to light up a cigarette because old habits die hard even if they don't really mean anything.

Fifteen. Found out that I couldn't really remember when was the last time I did any space ambushing or anything else related to floating somewhere with my eyes locked on the contacts screen. Maybe two years ago.

Finally, a flash of a ship arriving from a hyperjump and a new line on the panel. Diamondback Explorer. Well, not every Explorer is really an explorer...

"Ah-ha," SVI identificator. Black Flight ship. And another one dropped into the system while I was tapping the screen to look at the ID. "Got our clients. Be ready."

Twenty to twenty five degrees on the latitude and five to eight on the longitude, or, a bit forward and above, relative to the plane of my orbit and my position. I pointed Marshmallow at the ships yet didn't touch the throttle yet: they might've been the forward scouting group sent here first, depending on the tactics they used in that convoy.

There were three of them already once I finished the manoeuvre. So the transport should've been next, as it's obviously slower. Three DBXs were regrouping and turning towards the next star on their route, but that wasn't for long: a Fer-de-Lance going straight for you after you jumped in an otherwise empty system has always been the last thing you wanted to experience.

"Here it is. Go," an Anaconda appeared on the contacts panel and I commented on its arrival, also pushing the throttle stick full forward. Once my approach was finally spotted, escort ships began turning, as hard as it's possible in hypercruise, to three different sides, in a so-called 'banana peel', maybe attempting to drop on my tail and interdict me first. Yet, seemingly, I achieved what I wanted: instead of aligning with the next star on their route, the transport accelerated and changed its direction trying to outrun me.

"They're scattering. Your turn now, let's get the freighter."
