Elite roleplay: Off station

OFF STATION

Your ship, deep space, anything that is not happening inside the Citi Gateway or Ingaba...

General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

“Uh… maybe… I, prefer, your way. Safer. But, need, to get that, over to, your, ship… and, maybe, without workers, stumbling into, this.”

I gestured at the cargo bay as a whole. They definitely did not need to be catching sight of this assembly… would raise a little too many unwanted questions, when we weren’t even the ones behind it.

“I, guess, need to, detach, containers? Would also, like, a path, cut out. Not, squeezing back, through.”

Once was certainly enough. At least now, the only obstacle was time.. because there were fifty Helix containers waiting to be cut loose or released for transport… and our own patience. Hopefully, we were past the tricks and failsafes now, anyway.

If we just needed to detach the pipes from the Helix containers without cutting them, I could help that, too, at least limitedly. Hopefully the seals of those containers were only meant to disengage once the primary pump mechanism activated, which it now wouldn’t.
08 Aug 2024, 10:52am
“Aside from that pipe leading from the pump to the ceiling, and the one leading to the container with the nasty corrosive stuff, only a few pipes were welded directly to the pump,” I replied, my fingers tracing the cold metal of a pipe nearby.

“The other pipes, connecting the containers to each other, were hooked up with standard fittings. They are easy to separate, you only need to release the safety catch. No tools are required.”

As long as none of the containers were damaged, we should be in the clear transporting them. Handling containers of the same type at the Janus Research Centre had been straightforward in that regard.

I turned and pointed towards a few pipes nearby. “I can slice out a middle section from a couple of these,” I said. “That’ll give you a clear path to move around. Then, we’ll tackle the containers one by one.”
08 Aug 2024, 1:06pm
“Ok… sure. Go, on. Would, make this… a, lot, easier. For me.”

And also a lot more preferable and dignified than what I’d had to do to get into this position. Would be nice to have my freedom of movement back, too, instead of barely a few centimeters of clearance on either side… with the added bonus of speeding up the removal of the pipe fittings from the Helix containers.

Ideally, Palin would never know this had sat right under his nose, waiting to go off, for a few years. Or at least not until we were done. I looked at my companion working, right hand on the hip, left one left dangling, while she worked to get me free of the pipe trap.

‘What a weird situation to be in’, I thought to myself, getting a weird enjoyment out of it, knowing that it was only due to my excessively curved body.
08 Aug 2024, 1:42pm
I carved a path through the pipes, pausing for a moment to cast an appraising glance at the curvaceous figure of my companion. Looked like the cleared path wasn’t quite enough, I noted with a smirk. So, I set about widening the passage.

About half an hour later, I was satisfied with my handiwork.

“Alright, that should do it. See how you manage. If everything’s good, I’d say we get this show on the road!”
08 Aug 2024, 2:04pm
“Enjoying, the view?”, I threw at the other woman in a dry, teasing tone, following that glance cast at my big curves. With, maybe, a little extra leaning to the right to further emphasize the lower curve.

Then, once it was done, I wandered over and inspected the opening created for me… looked like it would work without needing to turn sideways partially, or anything like it. Just needed to be mindful of the clearance to the edge of the cut pipes as I walked through… and then I was out. I went right to one of the Helix containers to start undoing the pipes, being very careful to not damage the exterior in any way, no forced removal or unnecessary application of strength.

And also a lot of hoping that the seals of all those containers still worked, else this would result in a very quick demise for me, and one not much more pleasant for my companion. If it all went smoothly, though, it would only take a few minutes to undo the pipe fittings, and we could finally call an end to this terrorist madness.

Of course, I was still a bit slower in my work, having to thank a big breast, both of them, on their own, probably wider than one of my arms, doing its best to interfere as I fiddled around to get the pipes where I was working loose.

It was still so worth it.

The job went smoothly, and after a while, we finally freed all the Helix containers from the attached pipes. All that was left was to load them onto a robot cargo lifter, which would then take them to my Clipper.

“I think we’ll just leave the ship here. Best not to touch the corpse in the cockpit either. Maybe you should make sure no station security cameras recorded us... Could raise some awkward questions if the ship gets discovered one day.”
08 Aug 2024, 5:07pm
“Didn’t, I… disable, security?”, I pondered, trying my best to recall if I had. “Cannot, remember. Will, check.”

I quickly looked at my wrist computer for recent actions performed with it… and, sure enough, I did disable the security systems around this particular landing pad when we’d hacked into the system via that poorly secured terminal.

“Did, turn off. So… at, least, in… here, nobody, should, have seen us. Shall, we leave?”
08 Aug 2024, 6:15pm
“Yeah. I think it’s about time. I’ll just cancel my appointment with Professor Palin real quick. Don’t want anyone coming to tune my ship while I’ve got the Helix on board.”

I nodded to my companion. It slowly dawned on me that the danger was now truly over, at least as far as this treacherous plan was concerned. All that was left was to get rid of the stuff for good.

"Let’s make sure this stuff disappears for good,” I said, my voice a mix of relief and determination. “I don’t plan on getting caught with that.”
08 Aug 2024, 9:02pm
"Well, then, let us... go. Get out, of, here. Back, to, our ships."

I pointed toward the exit out the cargo bay door, and the airlock, walking closer to the other woman. I didn't fancy trying to figure out how to get the cargo hatch lowered when power was off, at least. Or maybe it would be a good idea to, because carrying all those Helix containers out for automated cargo transfer systems to take over... was not in my interest.

"Maybe, we, should... open, the hatch. First. Or, this, is not, going... anywhere."

I made a gesture encompassing the now disassembled doomsday device. And also threw a suggestive glance at the corrosive one, which was probably best eliminated as well. If I had to guess, it contained a similar or the exact same compound as what powered the NMLA's enzyme bombs, and it would not be a great idea to just leave it sitting here. That alone could cause some serious damage, if a certain someone came to recover it.

No power meant no easy way out, but I wasn’t one to be easily deterred. With a determined glint in my eye, I examined the room for anything that could help. My gaze landed on a manual override lever, partially hidden behind some Helix containers.

“Bingo,” I exclaimed, making my way over. I knew many smaller ships that were able to haul freight had a mechanical backup for situations just like this.

Grabbing a sturdy piece of a pipe from the floor, I wedged it into the lever’s mechanism. It was going to take some muscle, but I took the challenge. With a grunt, I threw all my weight into it, feeling the lever start to give. However, I weighed too little.

“Come on, you stubborn piece of junk,” I muttered under my breath, sweat beading on my forehead.

"A little support wouldn't be bad," I called out to my companion. A little extra body weight would go a long way in this case.
08 Aug 2024, 9:43pm
I sighed. It was never that simple. Walking over, I stopped just near the override lever.

"Allow, me. If, you'd give, a little space ..."

I positioned myself next to her and used the wall as support for my right foot, yanking down solidly on a free bit of pipe to get the lever moving. And that I did, getting it into the unlocked position in one swift move, probably weighing almost twice as much as the woman next to me, with the 'additions' to my body. Mostly, the lower half was responsible, though that didn't mean there was no muscle underneath all that soft stuff. Quite the contrary... the cargo hatch opened up, slowly lowering to the ground, letting both light and some less stale, though still recycled, air, in.

"There. So... now, shall, we?"

I gestured for her to walk ahead. The risk of me stumbling and flooring her along with me were fairly minimal, especially when the low gravity environment kept my oversized breast's weight as a modest one kilogram, instead of the roughly five which it weighed in a standard Earth G. I'd also leave it to her to initiate the cargo transfer.
08 Aug 2024, 10:51pm
"Thanks. Well, let’s get to it…”

I left the cargo hold through the now open hatch. Once I was down, I turned back to the ship and saw my companion just exiting.

I waved her over to me and away from the entrance. Then, I connected my personal computer to the local hangar service and ordered one of the robotic cargo lifters, which handled the transport of goods between ships and between ships and storage. Fifty containers were no big deal for such a lifter. Once it arrived, loading would go quickly... in fact, it would probably only take one trip from the Cobra MkIV to my Clipper, considering that much larger quantities were normally transported.

“Cargo lifter’s ordered and on its way. Now we wait… shouldn’t take too long.”
08 Aug 2024, 11:08pm
"Ok, but, should... probably, not, forget, corrosive thingy. Container, with it. Do not think, it is, a great idea, to leave, it."

It was merely a suggestion, but I thought it to be a sensible one.

"Do, we walk, back? Or, did you, want to... ride, the robot?"

I threw her a curious glance, simply wanting to know. I'd likely have to walk some distance anyway, because I was possibly a little too big for one of those small transport vehicles which people could hitch a ride in, and the Clipper's hangar would be in the row of large pads, since it didn't fit a medium ship hangar.
08 Aug 2024, 11:35pm
“Good point, we should definitely take the container with the corrosive stuff too. I think we’ll load it onto the lifter once it’s got everything else on board?”

I hadn’t even thought about whether I wanted to walk to the Clipper or ride with the lifter.

“You know, a little stroll might do me good. Even if I’m more at home in the cockpit, stretching my legs won’t kill me... don't look so surprised, my heart belongs to flying, and that’s not going to change. But I thought we can walk together until we each have to head to our respective hangars.” I said, my mind already picturing the sleek lines of my Clipper.

“And who knows when we’ll get another chance to take it easy like that, with no traps and irritating messages?” I added, my voice carrying a hint of laughter.
08 Aug 2024, 11:49pm
I shrugged.

“Whatever. Both, are… fine, for, me. Have not, a lot, to- say, right… now. And, we, still, have work, ahead.”

By which I was of course referencing the lead to what I assumed to be Helix’s origin. But maybe the adventure through a creepy old, and abandoned, orbital installation, then this… was enough, for a day. And I hadn’t forgotten that I’d told Jana I would be available or want to do something once we were done with… this. Or whatever I’d told her. Now, with the danger gone, I also stopped forgetting that our investigation had started with the mystery of Lab 23… definitely had been quite a busy day, especially by my recent - and lazy - standards. But I had to work them up to something better again, so this, in a way… was good practice.

I sat down on the floor while waiting for our robot buddy to show up, doing my best to fold both legs on top of each other. Not so easy, when I had thighs the size of my waist - or maybe close to it, at least - and got lifted up by all the excess mass in a rather noticeable way. The machine came into the ship storage room a few minutes later, starting its work.
