Elite roleplay: Off station

OFF STATION

Your ship, deep space, anything that is not happening inside the Citi Gateway or Ingaba...

General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

“Hm… ok. You, go, ahead, and start. I… think, this, could be… the backup source. If, it has, one. See …”

I pointed at what very much looked like a battery, with a screen next to it.

“Could, cut it, off… if, needed. But, remember, the corrosive, thingy. Could eat, ship hull. And… did you, bring protection?”

I looked around myself. Barely even had space to turn with my ‘thick’ body.

“When, you are, done… please, cut me, a way out, too. Not, squeezing through, again.”

“That corrosive stuff is probably meant to take out any security measures, like filters in the air ducts to the hangar, so they can pump in the Helix without a hitch. But that’s just a guess on my part.”

I paused for a moment, considering what my companion had said.

"We don’t have any special protection… but we could always grab one of the spacesuits from the airlock, if you think it’ll help. But really, that stuff shouldn’t cause us any trouble as long as it stays in its container. So, it’s probably best if you cut the line from that thing you found. Just to be safe… or do you fancy hacking it instead? It’s got a screen, after all.”
05 Aug 2024, 10:27pm
"Not, without power.", I replied. "But... I, guess, I could, give it, a hack. If, it turns, on."

Being some kind of access port for maintenance, it did have a physical connection point as well. I kept my attention focused on that, not minding the mess of pipes around. A couple bumps wouldn't hurt me, anyway - pipes would probably be off worse than me from it.

"Ready, when you are."

“Alright. Let’s get this show on the road.”

With the power confirmed offline, I turned my attention to the pump. The pipe connecting the pump and the Helix containers to the ceiling, where the ship was hooked up to the hangar’s atmospheric system, was my target. I carefully selected a cutting tool, its blade glinting in the light of my suit.

“Let’s start with this pipe,” I said, my voice a mix of determination and caution. “We need to sever the connection to the hangar’s system without causing an issue.”

I began cutting through the pipe, the tool slicing cleanly through the metal, bright sparks illuminating the cargo bay momentarily. As I worked, methodically disconnecting the pipe from the pump, I couldn’t help but think about a possible failsafe. If it existed and was still active, it could spell disaster. I remembered that Cassia had tricked us once before by using an old school booby trap instead of a modern proximity sensor, which, being non-electronic, hadn't registered on my scanner.

“So, far… nothing.”, I reported, keeping my eye on the darkened display. “Keep doing, it.”

It was meant to be encouragement, but the tone I was able to create didn’t quite match that. Still, I wanted my companion to carry on, since I was down here, ready to disable the - or any - failsafe if I needed to.

But at the same time, I expected this was just a part of it, because the battery mounted here was not nearly big enough to power a mechanism of that size for any time, or not the time it would require to disperse its payload. Only keep the display with a timer to doom ticking. And maybe give the other parts of the system a kick if it triggered, with one of the containers disguised as the Helix when it actually contained a power source.

The terrorist nutjob was certainly devious enough to design it in that way… but I did have my little hacking tool plugged in already, which could tell me where the activation signal had gone to. In the worst case scenario, I could also apply some brute force to the problem.

Or… maybe our “corrosive” container was not full of a substance to allow everything to leak through into the base, but actually a battery. I decided to not mention this suspicion yet, partly because I could not remember if there was actually anything corrosive to a battery, in the moment.

I gave my companion the thumbs up and continued to cut through the pipe with the deafening noise and the shaking and rattling of the cutter until the job was done. With the pipe now completely severed and open at the top, I toyed with the idea of cutting it further so I could pour some of the contents from the smaller container labelled 'Corrosive' into it to destroy the pump.

Just as I was about to share this brilliant idea with my companion, I thought I heard a clicking sound, like from an old clock. My ears were a bit numb from the loud cutting process, and the screeching of the cutter was still ringing in my ears like a tinnitus, so I wasn’t entirely sure if the sound I just heard was real. I tried to focus, turning my head in different directions, but all I got was the tinnitus getting louder.

“Thought I heard a faint metallic clicking… do you hear that too? Or is that ear interference from the cutting noise?"

“No, it, was not, you. Display, still, dark. But, if, this, powers up -“ I had a feeling it would soon, and was really expecting it. “- I, told, my little hack, thingy, to see, what, it is, doing.”

I pointed at the corrosive container.

“Go, cut, that off. It, could, be, a battery. Or, it is, one, of the other… containers. Watch, for power, readings. Feel like, this, might… try, to turn on, soon.”

I toyed with the idea of messing up the exposed wiring here with my own cutter, see if that could interrupt whatever process was starting, and asked about it.

“Think, I should, cut this? Or, not, in case, it triggers, another, trap?”

“It would be better if nothing came to life here. Where did you get the idea that the smaller container labelled 'corrosive' could be a battery? If I cut it open and there really is acid in there, we're screwed. Or did you think I should cut the pipe that connects it to the pump?"

I pondered the situation. Nothing was off the table, but my thorough initial scan hadn’t revealed any live wires. Still, I decided to run it again. Maybe the vibrations from the cutter had triggered something.

“Can’t say if it’s a good idea to cut that thing with the display near you or not. It could be stupid if it comes to life and we didn’t do it... but it could also be stupid if you cut it and trigger something. Maybe the golden middle ground is to keep an eye on it with your tool and act quickly if needed?”
06 Aug 2024, 9:14pm
“I, will, watch, then. And, you, continue to, cut.”

I paused briefly, glancing at the “Corrosive” labelled container again.

“I, meant, cut pipe. Not, the container. But, do, batteries… not, contain, an acid, too? If, it is not… that, then, maybe, one of, the… Helix, ones, hides, backup power. Could, anyway.”

The situation wouldn’t leave us much of a choice but to continue what we were doing anyway. Or we would spend the rest of the day here pondering if we were about to trigger a failsafe… not that I could do a lot from here to help, other than cut off the two pipes nearest, or mess up the wiring of the access point I’d opened up.

Beyond that, I would have to go pulling the same acrobatics I had to squeeze myself into where I was right now, and not be much use as a result. So it was probably better I stayed where I was, even with it basically offering no room to move around.
06 Aug 2024, 9:43pm
“Alright, I’m on it. And you, keep an eye on that thing you found, will you?”

As far as I knew, there were batteries that were acid-based and those that were not. But I scanned all the cables and pipes around me one more time, just to be absolutely sure that my previous action hadn’t lead to something powering up. The scan came back negative.

Next I started cutting through the pipe that connected the container labeled ‘corrosive’ to the pump. The noise was deafening, and once again, the cargo area was briefly lit up by a shower of sparks, while somewhere in the back of my mind the thought nagged that an old school booby trap and a mechanical ticking had something in common.
06 Aug 2024, 10:15pm
I was lazily eyeing the display screen when it suddenly decided to flicker to life, as I was suspecting it to. A message showed up on it, in red letters.

Hardwire connection separated. Receiver telemetry terminated. Engaging failsafe routines.

A second message appeared just below this one a moment later.

Alert. Main power offline. Engaging secondary power source…

“Well, well… what, a surprise.”, I muttered to myself. “Now where are you sending …”

Had to be something I could figure out by being connected to this with my little magic device. An annoyingly taunting message also popped up, replacing the previous two.

You’re reading this, which means you’ve probably gotten around the security measures on the ship’s primary computer and cut off main power to stop the trap from going off. Good job.

This also means you’ve started cutting up this beauty, instead of leaving good enough alone. Aren’t you a naughty one? I’d have liked your skills on my side. But you always have backups. And good luck finding it in the maze. The clock’s still ticking.

“Of course …”

I raised my voice.

“Well, would, have been too easy. You cut, some kind of, small wire, I think. On or in a pipe, maybe, said something, about… ‘receiver telemetry’. Maybe, to monitor dispersal, at the end, of the big, tube. And, something, hidden, in a ‘maze’. Power source, maybe.”

Hopefully, that would be enough for my companion to get started, while I tried figuring out myself where this backup generator or battery was, probably hidden somewhere in this mess of Helix canisters and pipes. If it even was a power source rather than a bomb… which I was starting to think this thing in front of me was looking a lot like.

The only thing we were missing now, was another recording of the crazed nut we were dealing with, trying to be an annoying distraction from the slight matter of not getting killed by the Helix, if that corrosive gas wouldn’t get us first. And we weren’t looking at a bomb waiting to go off, with the pump mechanism sabotaged.
06 Aug 2024, 11:41pm
“Oh shit. And did you just literally read ‘the clock is still ticking’?”

A sinking feeling spread through me, confirming my hunch might not have been so off after all. The clicking sound I had heard could be from a mechanical winding mechanism, its gears ticking away like a clock. Maybe the vibrations from cutting had set it off.

“Remember that clicking I told you about? Maybe we’re dealing with an old-school timer mechanism… fits the booby trap style. Something scanners wouldn’t easily pick up, and no one expects these days.”

I then set about examining the pipe I had just cut through. It was quite possible that the failsafe had been triggered by my last action, as my companion had discovered the alert immediately afterward.
06 Aug 2024, 11:50pm
“Yes. It said, ‘the clock is still ticking’. But, think, might have, been, the… big, pipe. Something, to do, with, a monitoring, device, and, cut wire.”

I still presumed it would have been to verify dispersal of the stuff, or just placed up there because it was the most obvious point to cut off, first.

“It said, the, thing, is… somewhere, in, the maze. This, pipe, mess? But, don’t know, if a container, or, which.”

The screen wasn’t being very helpful with just showing the last message instead of any sort of timer. I’d have to hope my magic key dug up something, or some kind of clue, quickly.

“Maybe, you would, like, to… look, at the, screen, yourself. Or, anything, here.”

I’d just have to make some kind of space here, since my extra size meant there was only room for one of us at a time. But the pipes made that job difficult, unless cut away.
06 Aug 2024, 11:59pm
"Just read it out to me. Otherwise, we’re wasting too much time."

I had responded to my companion’s objection and took another look at the tube I had cut first. If there was a hidden wire, it had to be really well concealed because I hadn’t noticed anything when I sliced through the tube.
07 Aug 2024, 12:05am
“Already, told, you. Waiting, for… results, from my, thingy.”

I impatiently planted my hands on the hips and placed both legs slightly further apart, watching the device work silently. At this point, it was down to it more than anything we could find, I suspected.
